Make Your Home A Green Home More and more people are realizing the benefits of being environmentally friendly and going green. There are some people who may want to go green, but are frightened by the upfront costs associated with energy saving products. This article offers some great ideas which are inexpensive, yet greatly help protect the environment. Light bulbs are something that everyone has to buy for their house. The amount of money that it takes to have the lights working is high. Incandescent lighting leaves carbon footprints which is bad for the planet. To help the environment, make the change from incandescent light bulbs to CFL light bulbs. CFL stands for compact florescent light bulbs. These light bulbs use less energy than the more common incandescent light bulbs. You can purchase the light bulbs in bulk or over the internet to save some money. As soon as you install the light bulbs, your energy bill will go down which will quickly pay for the initial cost of the CFL light bulbs. CFL light bulbs last approximately 10,000 hours as compared to incandescent light bulbs which only last an average of 1,200 hours. By opting for CFL light bulbs you will not need to replace as often which also helps reduce the amount of garbage going into the landfill. Composting is another way to leave a better carbon footprint on the environment. Place a small container with a lid in your house for food that can be composted (apple cores, banana peels, etc.). Once the container is full, take it outside to begin a compost pile. Once Spring arrives, you can use this compost as the perfect soil amendment. Compost contains many nutrients which will help your plants reach their full potential. Another fantastic and nutritious way to help the environment is to plant a garden. Gardens come in many forms, so do not worry if you have limited space. Plants can be grown in containers as well as in the ground. Decide on which fruits and vegetables your family uses most and plant them. This is an excellent way to help out the environment. After you are done gardening for the day, you will want to wash those clothes you were wearing. You put them in the washing machine and make sure they are nice and clean. Now you put them in the dryer. This is where an opportunity can be missed. Instead of putting them in the clothes dryer and wasting electricity, why not hang them outside to dry? If you do not live in an area where this is possible, or the weather is not in your favor, you can set up a drying rack in your house and do the same thing.
