    Dear student,

    Times are changing

Before, being an academic student was preferred. Today it is a must!

Therefore students have to differentiate themselves differently. Students have to show that they are the one person a com-pany is looking for. Stepping out of the crowd is getting harder and harder with the changing environment around us. Fewer opportunities can be taken due to time and money constraints. However , there is no reason to not strive for your uniqueness and lay back. This is the time to show to companies what you got and jump into your future career.

One way to differentiate yourself is to meet companies per-sonally and show them who you are. This is why Make a Move organizes the Career Week on 15, 16 and 17 November 2011 in the Crowne Plaza Hotel. On these three days, 31 companies are ready to meet you for presentations, workshops, individual consults, lunches, dinner and a company fair. Get to know them and let them get to know you.

The Make a Move Career Week is the perfect opportunity to orientate yourself and show what you can offer the companies. If you do not, others will.

Are you ready to jump into your future career?

On behalf of the Make a Move team 2011,

    16. Interview Boston Consulting GroupNName: Tom RothAge: 23Studies: Bsc. International Economic Studies Msc. International Business Organisation: Management, Change and Consultancy

Last year, Tom participated in different activities during the Make a Move Career Week in Maastricht. One of the activities he attended was the workshop of The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Now, a year later, he is about to start his career at BCG.

Why did you decide to participate in the Make a Move Career Week Maastricht 2010 and which activities did you attend? In total I participated three times at the Make a Move Career Week Maastricht. The first two times I participated in order to orientate myself on the labor market in general - I attended several company presentations to get to know many companies in different sectors. Based on this orientation I decided that starting in consultancy would suit me most. Consequently, during my third participation in 2010, I focused mainly on this sector. I took part in work-shops of various consultancies and also attended lunches of consultancies and multination-als. It was useful to get to know the different companies better and to get in contact with recruiters.

What were your expectations and to which extent were those expectations fulfilled? The expectations I had in the first two years were different compared to the ones in the third year. In 2010 I hoped to get a clear picture of the atmosphere and corporate culture within the companies, especially within different consultancies. I knew that starting in the world of consultancy would be demanding and I therefore found it important that the culture within the company would be informal. Therefore, a major benefit of attending the Make a Move Career Week is the convenient way of getting into contact with recruiters. In the period following the Career Week I made use of the contacts I had gained: giving recruiters - who you already know- a call is easier than calling them without any reference. All in all, my expectations were definitely met. Due to my participation in workshops and lunches I really connected with the recruiters. I formed a clear picture of the companies and subsequently applied to business courses of companies that suited me. After the business course at BCG I knew that this company suited me best and I decided to apply.

What made you decide to start at BCG?I knew that working in a consultancy is demanding, but also gives a jump start to your career. This holds true for the entire sector, but I have deliberately chosen BCG. The decision was twofold. Firstly, BCG is most renowned in its field. Due to this, the most challenging pro-jects are assigned to them. Furthermore, you spend so many hours a day working, I find it important to get along well with my colleagues. The atmosphere at BCG informal and open; this truly distinguishes them from other competition. I first noticed this at the Make a Move Career Week and this feeling was only confirmed in the later process that was to come. All in all, the nature of the company and definitely the people were decisive in choosing BCG.

Name: Evelien DupontAge: 25Studies: Bsc. International Economic Studies Msc. Financial Economics Asset Pricing

Evelien graduated in 2010 at Maastricht University. Since October 2010 she is working for BCG as an associate.

What kind of projects have you been doing in your first year and what was your function within the team?Over the last year Ive worked in the energy sector, the health care sector, and the financial sector.Ive experienced a great variety in my work and responsibilities. For instance, Ive been work-ing on a strategic project in which we - after executing an analysis- advised the client to split the company and find strategic partners for both parts of their entity. In the follow-up project I was responsible for the assessment of potential strategic partners and the synergy analysis. I attended the Management Board meetings and presented and discussed BCGs findings directly to/with the Board of Directors.

What skills do you need to possess in order to start at BCG?There is not one set of skills. The variety of people working within BCG is large, and there are various skills that come in handy when you work with BCG. However, being flexible is impor-tant in this job. As an employee at BCG you work on a different project, in a different sector, for a different client, with a different team every time. Furthermore, the scope of projects is not always very clear cut at the beginning of a project, which can result in shifting focus within the project. Next to this, it is important to be a team-player: within BCG you never work alone. Youre not only working within a team of BCG, but also together with the client. BCG always tries to (at least) mirror the BCG team with a client team. So even in your first week at BCG you will work together with your counterparty from the client side.

How does BCG train and help you in developing yourself professionally?BCG has an extensive training program with mainly skill-focused trainings (e.g. communica-tion, client management, strategic concepts, analytical skills). Most trainings you follow are only with your peer-group (the group of people that started around the same time at BCG Amsterdam as you did), but there are also several trainings which you follow somewhere in Europe with all you European peers. However, most learning is done on the job. BCG has an extensive coaching and develop-ment program. During a project you generally have several coaching sessions with your project leader and you receive an evaluation at the end of every project. You have a Career Development Advisor who guides and coaches you over all these projects and with whom you discuss your general progress at least once every six months.

    19. Interview Unilever

What exactly is your function within Unilever?I am a Management Trainee Finance, in which I have the function as salescontroller. Being a salescontroller means you are responsible for the financials of a customer team, which is Kruidvat and Makro in my case. So I am not responsible one certain brand or category, but I see them all as these categories come together in a cus-tomer team. More specifically, I am responsible for activities such as challenging the results and forecasts of the customer team, give financial support in the new deal with the retailer and check if retail promotions were effective.

What is the joy of this function? It is a very dynamic function. Every day and week there is something to do and something new to learn, there is never a dull moment. As a salescontroller, I have to work with several different disciplines such as marketing, sales, logistics and finance and different categories. I am able to see a lot of the different aspects Uni-lever has to offer and a lot of insights in the fast moving consumer goods market. One moment I am discussing pricing strategies which should be communicated to the board, the other moment I am checking with marketeers whether or not we should do European Cup promotions with a certain retailer, or in one moment I am challenging sales persons on their deal with a retailer and the other moment I am trying to solve a financial dispute with a retailer.

Which other starter-functions does Unilever offer?Unilever has a whole range of starters functions, including the Unilever Future Leaders Programme. This programme offers management traineeships in the area of sales, marketing, logistics, finance, R&D and HR. In one year there could be up to 40 trainee positions in the Benelux - in my case there were 36 trainees. The train-eeship starts in March and September every year. You can also apply for a specific non-trainee starter-function in one of the disciplines at Unilever, but this depends on the availability of a job. When you are interested in a traineeship you can visit www.unilever.nl/carriere or keep an eye on the Unilever Graduates NL facebook page.

How does the application process for such traineeships look like? For the traineeship, there are several rounds. The first round is the usual CV applica-tion round. After that you have to do an online test, in which several skills are tested such as numerical and logical reasoning. If you pass, there is an interview by tel-ephone in which the interviewer asks you around six to seven questions. The final round in the process is the assessment day at the office in Rotterdam, where you get several tests such as a group assignment, an individual case, a presentation and an interview. This looks tough, but it is very interesting as you do the test with sen-ior Unilever management (you could be interviewed by the CEO or CFO of Unilever Benelux, so be sure to check who they are) and you get a very good impression of the people who work there.

How did you personally get involved with Unilever?I was looking for a Dutch multinational. Unilever is a big name, so I went to a career event where Unilever was present. I talked to a recruiter at a career event and to some people who worked there, which gave me a very positive impression of and a sense of what kind of people worked at Unilever.

What are you personal goals, concerning your career at Unilever?I want to go abroad, I hope Asia (such as Singapore, Shanghai or Jakarta), as that is the booming market. Unilever is all over the world, so there a lot of opportunities to go abroad. Secondly, Unilever offers degrees (such as an international RC degree), which I would like to do in the upcoming years. As for my short term goal, I would like to support a deal with Unilever and a retailer, be part of the negotiating process and make sure there will be a good financial deal for Unilever (which I will do this upcoming months).

What does Unilever look for in its employees?Key words are pro-activity, energy, flexibility, the ability to work in a team and re-sults oriented. There are a lot of opportunities, a lot of work and a lot of fun, but you have to go for it yourself. You can make your own career and your own success.

What advice would you give to students orientating on the labour market?Go to careerweeks, such as Make a Move, see as many companies as possible even if you do not like them at first and collect impressions. Knowing which companies you do not like is valuable too. Thereafter start talking to people by visiting inhouse days, business courses or just make an appointment with someone you know, so you can get a better impression of the companies. Knowing the kind of people who work there and see the company from the inside gives you the best impression.
