MAITREYA THE COMING PART 1: AGE OF AQUARIUS

The meteoric growth in popularity of New Age concepts has been helped in no small part by the Internet (which has helped spawn a New Age 'Golden Age'), and celebrity endorsements, such as when (in the 80's) actress Shirley MacLaine chronicled her conversion to New Age thought in several best-selling autobiographies and multiple media appearances, which helped bring the New Age perspective into the limelight. Much of the popularity of self-help style New Age topics can be laid squarely at the door of the self styled guru of the New Age Oprah Winfrey, who's influence on the genre can hardly be understated. Diana Baroni, editorial director at Grand Central's Wellness Central imprint, contends that Oprah has been the key to the genre's recent accomplishments.

1. THE NEW AGE MOVEMENT

The term "New Age" is an informal term derived from astrology, which indicates that this earth, if not the cosmos, is on the verge of an evolutionary transition from the Piscean Age of rationality to the Aquarian Age of spirituality, bliss, and harmony of all things. [00]. The song Aquarius by The 5th Dimension from the musical Hair, which refers to the coming "Age of Aquarius", sounds, to most people, like wishful thinking or an imaginary utopia. However it exemplifies the basic ideology and aspirations of the Movement,

When the moon is in the 7th house And Jupiter aligns with Mars,

Then peace will guide the planets And love will fill your heart;

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius.

Astrologers and adherents to the New Age theory break up the history of mankind into eras, which they also refer to as eons or ages. The ages of astrology are named by the constellations that “rule” that era, based on where the constellation is in the night sky. These are the same constellations of the western zodiac. The vernal equinox is the standard date that the constellations are observed to determine astrological ages. The sun’s position in the vernal equinox should be in the constellation of that age.

When a new era begins can create a lot of disagreement among astrologers, especially when they are promoting a new teacher or master to usher us into the Age of Aquarius. However, the general consensus is that astrological ages are roughly 2150 years long. As you may have noticed, the constellations do not really line up in neat patterns that divide the night sky into 12 easy to divide segments. The fuzzy nature of astrology does not deter the practitioner, though. That’s just more wiggle room for speculative divination!

Instead of the names of the ages progressing forward through the list of signs, or constellations, the ages pass in retrograde. This means that each era would be ruled by the one before it on the zodiac. The astrological age of Aries, or the era of the Ram, was followed by the age of Pisces, which would be followed by the Age of Aquarius.

Astrologers claim that each of these ages line up with humanity’s personality and development. A world leader or avatar of that era ushers in the new age. Moses is considered to be the spokesman for the age of the Ram, moving backward from the age of Taurus, the bull. The Law given to Moses to form the basis of God’s people’s government is seen as a document true to the nature of the season. Astrologers say that is why the sacrificial lamb was so prevalent in Old Testament worship. However, this makes little sense because the people of Israel were specifically forbidden to consult the stars for worship and divination.

Another point that is often brought us is that the age of Aries was a time of wars. The rise and fall of empires and great conquerors is supposed to signify the nature of this era. This argument falls completely flat when you look at the total of written history. The earth has always been plagued with war, and humans will only achieve true peace when Christ returns.

With the end of the age of Aries came Jesus. Astrologers claim he ushered in the Piscean era. The fact that Jesus’ life and the history of early Christianity are both filled plenty of fish symbolism is used as evidence that Jesus was the spokesman, or World Teacher, for the age of Pisces. The ichthus fish that early Christians used as a symbol to each other for meeting places in the era of Roman persecution is twisted into something occult and pagan. Even baptism, that symbol of the death and burial of the sinner with Christ to be resurrected anew, has been used as an example of Jesus bringing in the Piscean age!

The image of Pisces is two fishes that are swimming in a circle, much like a yin-yang symbol. Continuing to borrow from any and all religious traditions, the astrologers argue that this is evidence that humanity would struggle against itself for the Piscean era. Interestingly, the very argument about the wars of mankind being due to the influence of the constellation Aries can now be made for Pisces, if you use the slippery logic of an astrologer.

Now that we’ve talked about the common beliefs expressed by the New Age crowd on the previous eras, it’s time to talk about their favorite age. The New Age that they refer to in their own name is the Age of Aquarius. Although astrologers vary on when the Aquarian Age will begin by as much as 2000 years, most believe that we’ve already entered the new era or will do so shortly. For example, some think we entered it just recently in 2012 when the Mayan calendar ended.

Those who believe in astrological ages, think that mankind is due for a new mindset. It’s easy to see how people can fall for the hype. Engineers and scientists have made huge advances in the last century. Our understanding of the nature of the world is better than ever before. We are able to communicate with anyone the world over in the short amount of time it takes to type an email or dial a phone number. Of course these changes have made the world seem smaller and more accessible.

So what do they think is going to happen now? Well, the Age of Aquarius is supposed to be a New Age in many ways. Humanism, already on the rise, will become widely accepted. The belief that it’s up to humans to save themselves, evolve to Divinity, and become a perfected whole, is becoming more and more accepted as fact. People are incredibly self-centered, and this type of teaching is very appealing to our base nature.

The New Age Movement (NAM) first appeared as an entity in the 1960s and 1970s, with widespread use of the term "New Age" starting in the mid 70s. However, with roots that stretch back into antiquity, the New Age Movement is anything but new. It is, instead, a modern revival of various ancient religious traditions and practices that have come together in a decentralized Western social and spiritual movement. It is an "emerging world view... a way of thinking that is being subtly introduced to multitudes in Western civilization. It weds the humanism of the West with the spirituality of Eastern occult mysticism. The union of these two unlikely bedfellows inflates former concepts of human potential in the West to unlimited proportions, generating a belief in the deification of man."

While you may not be altogether familiar with the term "new Age", it has, over the last several decades, gradually been gathering momentum on the face of this earth, and has so permeated our culture that, whether we realize it or not, virtually every single person, both in and out of the church, has been exposed to it. There is no leader, no official creed, no centralized headquarters, no membership. Nevertheless, it is estimated that, worldwide, there are millions of followers of various New Age practices and beliefs. Diverse facets have affected almost every area of western culture, including sociology, psychology, medicine, the

government, ecology, science, arts, education, the business community, the media, entertainment, sports, and even the church. The movement expresses itself in widely divergent and various mutated forms, from the blatantly obvious to the subtle. It is expressed in organized religious forms such as Christian Science, Unity, and even forms of Witchcraft. Yet, it shows up in secular forms as well, in various human potential seminars, and much in between, i.e., transcendental meditation, some alternative holistic health practices, and certain curriculum in public (and private) schools. There is hardly any area of human interest that does not have some people somewhere exploring it from a New Age point of view.

In fact, New Age teachings have even found their way into the prison system. The book Letters from the Dhamma Brothers by Jenny Phillips documents

"...the profound changes experienced by inmates in the four years after completing a 10-day Vipassana meditation course taught in the Donaldson Correctional Facility in Alabama... The course has now become a regular treatment program at two Alabama prisons.”

This meteoric growth in popularity has been helped in no small part by the Internet (which has helped spawn a New Age 'Golden Age'), and celebrity endorsements, such as when (in the 80's) actress Shirley MacLaine chronicled her conversion to New Age thought in several best-selling autobiographies and multiple media appearances, which helped bring the New Age perspective into the limelight.

"With Oprah's recommendation of Eckhart Tolle," Baroni says, "consumers now seem to be seeking information on mind/body philosophies that merge with the self-help category... Grubbauer at DeVorss echoes Baroni's view on Oprah's influence on the genre. "The recent buzz surrounding the phenomenal success of The Secret and Tolle's A New Earth has led to... a more mainstream audience expressing interest in classic gems."

Similarly, a summer 2013 Dr. Oz show featured crystal sonic therapy, in which Dr. Mitch Gaynor demonstrated how this ancient form of healing can help "curb cravings, improve memory, sleep better and tame migraines.

Despite its popularity, the New Age concept is impossible to fit into a tidy package, simply because it is an umbrella term used to group wide and varied practices under one simple heading. It is a fusion of differing systems of beliefs with no central organization, no common set of beliefs, and no absolute authority. Because New Agers combine elements that appeal to them from a variety of sources, the path each one follows is both subjective and highly individualistic. Different New Age groups will give prominence to different aspects of belief. For example, some are more focused on alternative healing methods, others on the environment etc. However, the common thread that binds these groups to the movement as a whole, is that a New Age is dawning.

This secular, multi-cultural, multi-religious fusion, usually rejects traditional religious doctrine and dogma, but draws inspiration from Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, plus other ancient religious traditions such as native American spirituality. In fact, the vast majority of New Age beliefs and practices are modern (Read western) re-interpretations of ancient teachings and practices. This includes common New Age beliefs and practices such as elements of Astrology, Shamanism, Chakras, Complementary and Alternative medicine, Meditation, Energy Healing, Aromatherapy and Visualisation, the Gaia hypothesis, etc.

Although New Age beliefs stem from a wide range of different religions and schools of thought, there are some common themes which remain the same. The most central and commonly shared beliefs are various combinations of Gnosticism and Occultism.

Although you will find as many definitions of Gnosticism as there are dictionaries, in a religious context a gnostic spiritual path is one which seeks to attain divine knowledge, while a quest for gnosis can be seen as a quest for enlightenment. To be 'Gnostic' is understood as being reliant, not on knowledge in a general sense, but as being specially receptive to mystical, or esoteric experiences of direct participation with the divine. In fact 'salvation' is this knowledge of the divine, commonly associated with a process of inward 'knowing' or self-exploration.

Occultism is the study of occult or hidden wisdom. To the occultist it is the study of "Truth", a deeper truth that exists beneath the surface: It can involve such subjects as magic (magick), alchemy, extra-sensory perception, astrology, spiritualism and numerology. Forms of the occult can include mediums, channelers, clairvoyants, psychics, spiritists, diviners, mystics, gurus, shamans, psychical researchers, Yogis, psychic and holistic healers, astral travel, astrology, mysticism, Ouija boards, Tarot cards, contact with the dead, UFOs, and thousands of other practices which almost defy cataloging.

Perhaps the most common factor that runs through most New Age beliefs is that human beings, the Earth, and all that grows and lives on it... in fact, the universe itself, are all part of one primordial energy. Collectively, all these components make up a unique entity called "god". Therefore, everyone and everything in the universe can be identified with the Divine; "god" is immanent; present in every person and everything. In other words, you are God or, at least, a part of god.

Although every individual is part of the divine, the higher a person's level of consciousness, and the more inner harmony they can achieve the closer they are to enlightenment or full realization of their own divinity. This concept of ultimate liberation achieved through the efforts of the individual alone, without the benefit of grace, or an external saviour, has largely been borrowed from Buddhism and Hinduism). However, man's problem as a whole, is that he is usually unenlightened i.e. he is either unaware of this great fact, or has not

Page 8: Maitreya - Age of Aquarius - globalwatchaccess.com · The ages of astrology are named by the constellations that “rule” that era, based on where the constellation is in the night

experienced it. Therefore what man needs, perhaps more than anything else, is to become conscious of his "inner divinity."

This fact alone makes the entire New Age belief system extremely narcissistic and self centered. Everything revolves around me, me, and more me. What I can achieve, what I can gain, how I can pad my ego under the pretense of getting in touch with inner divinity and, most alarmingly it teaches that since we are all gods capable of self-redemption, we have no need of the salvation Christ offered us.

When humanity collectively accepts and experiences itself as being divine, we will not only save ourselves, we will save our world. It is little wonder then, that the basic goal of most New Agers is to enter the Age of Aquarius by raising their level of consciousness by whatever methods appeals to, and works for, them, which is why New Age beliefs are usually centered around three categories, mental and physical health, spiritual growth and ecology.

Since they believe that every person's spirit is a part of the cosmic spirit, and a component of what makes up "god", most New Agers stress that intuition, and feelings, must play a primary role in our decision making.

All those who espouse New Age principles stress the importance of personal experience. The fact that something is meaningful and good for one person does not necessarily mean that it is right for another. Personal experience is a reliable point of reference. We have to experiment and find out what is good for us, "what works." Intuition and emotion take precedence over rationality. In the eyes of adherents, the major moral and religious institutions, associated with rationality and dogmatism, have failed. As people gradually learn to achieve self-realization, they no longer need these institutions to find the truth.

Because New Agers understand mind, body, and soul to be one, they believe that it is possible for people to cure emotional and physical ailments by getting in touch with their inner selves, thus achieving inner harmony, this often done through meditation, yoga etc. Vegetarianism and natural organic foods are also often touted as aids to this process.

Because everything is part of God, New Agers usually show a great respect for the environment and are usually interested in ecological issues of all kinds. In fact, some believe that the Earth is a living organism called Gaia... a goddess with maternal (thus feminine) attributes. (In Greek mythology, Gaia was the primal Greek Mother Goddess; creator and giver of birth to the Earth and all the Universe).

The site Spiritual Ecology is self-described as an "exploration of the spiritual dimension of our present ecological crisis". Their About Spiritual Ecology page opens with a the words of Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, a British born Sufi mystic and lineage successor in the Naqshbandiyya-Mujaddidiyya Sufi Order.

"If we are to restore the balance in our world, we need to go beneath the surface to heal the split between spirit and matter and help to bring the sacred back into life.”

And go on to say

"Some in the field note that our patriarchal world-view, and a monotheistic religious orientation towards a transcendent divinity, is largely responsible for destructive attitudes about the earth, body, and the sacred nature of creation"

They go on to quote Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh who, in Beyond Environment: Falling Back in Love with Mother Earth "speaks of the importance of mindfulness in taking care of our Mother Earth, and how the highest form of prayer is real communion with the Earth".

Additionally, in their quest for inner harmony, many New Agers use a large array of 'spiritual helps' to contact with the source of divine energy. These can take the form of Tibetan bells and bowls, Runes, Peace Poles, Talismans, Amulets, Tarot Cards, Pyramids, Incense, Pendants, Charms, Statues, Crystal Balls, Healing Crystals, Dream Catchers etc. many of which are marketed as Native American Sacred Objects.

Along the same lines, the common feature of the relatively new term "New Age music" is its aim to promote relaxation and inner harmony. This type of music, which is often used as an aid to meditation, is "... applied to the works of various composers and musicians who strive to create soothing audio environments rather than follow song structures".

It is simplicity itself to obtain very detailed knowledge about any of these subjects. A "Spiritual Supermarket" on the internet carries a wide array of literature, New Age music, crafts, magazines etc. A plethora of occult New Age books cover every topic imaginable... from mind/body philosophies, to instructions on how to communicate with both your guardian angels and spirit guides or improve the energy in your home with Feng Shui, based on the ancient oracle of I Ching. There are literally hundreds of publications including some very popular ones like The New Age Journal, Body Mind Spirit, Yoga Journal, Gnosis, East West, Noetic Sciences, and Omega.

Services in alternative medicine and various other New Age therapies are available almost everywhere you look. They range from acupressure, astrological readings, aromatherapy, drumming workshops, herbology, hypnotherapy massages, meditation and/or yoga classes, nutrition counseling, psychic channeling, palmistry, past life regression, reflexology, iridology, kinesiology, magnotherapy, shamanism, Tai Chi classes, Tarot and Rune reading, and color therapy also called chromotherapy. (According to Ayurvedic medicine, certain colors are associated with the seven main chakras, or spiritual centers, in our bodies located along the spine).

Also easy to find is an assortment of New Age symbolism including rainbows, rays of light, the yin-yang, swastikas, unicorns, angelic figures, etc. etc. etc.

Very popular shows like Dr Oz also often endorse New Age alternative medicine and relaxation techniques. As previously mentioned, a recent one featured crystal sonic therapy, in which Dr. Mitch Gaynor demonstrated how this ancient form of healing can help "curb cravings, improve memory, sleep better and tame migraines". Whilst it is possible that listening to different sound frequencies can, and does, have an effect on the brain, my concern is that these are Tibetan singing bowls are often touted as "Chakra meditation", accompaniments to deep meditation or yoga etc. The sound of these bowls may not, in

themselves, be harmful, but one has to remember that they were originally used in religious ceremonies in Tibet, China, Japan and Vietnam. The pre-Buddhism shamans in Tibet used them to invoke benevolent spirits for healing, plentiful harvests, and to disperse negative energies.

Some beliefs and practices associated with the New Age are: astrology, auras, black and white magic, bioenergy, chakras, chi energy, Christ-consciousness, Christian Science, Church Universal & Triumphant, crystals, Eastern mysticism, ESP, Gaia, gnosticism, higher consciousness, human potential movement, Kabbalah, Magick (this spelling was chosen by British occultist Aleister Crowley to differentiate the occult from stage magic), Mind Science, Native American spirituality, neo-paganism, parapsychology, prana, psi, reflexology, reiki, reincarnation, Religious Science, shamanism, Silva Mind Control, spiritism, tarot cards, Theosophy, therapeutic touch, trance-channeling, Transcendental Meditation, transpersonal psychology, Unity School of Christianity, Witchcraft, yin-yang, Yoga, and Zen.

A September 2008 article in Publishers Weekly, called New Age Pragmatism: Crystals And Tarots Give Way To More Practical And Mainstream Subject Matter, focuses on how the New Age is continuing to expand into other categories,

"Today the genre gratifies a more mainstream consumer. Fading is the era of crystals and tarots. Nowadays, readers seek science-based titles that will help them become healthier and more spiritually aware. As New Age is continuing to expand into other categories, many titles that were once the provinces of health, psychology, self-help and spirituality (to name a few) have now assumed the New Age mantle.”

According to the article, Llewellyn publisher Bill Krause says...

"The public is looking at a wide range of spiritual practices to find solace," he says. "Things that were once looked upon as niche or fringe are now looked upon as interesting solutions worthy of exploration."

Traditionally, the New Age category has catered to aficionados of the esoteric and the occult. Today the genre gratifies a more mainstream consumer. Fading is the era of crystals and tarots. Nowadays, readers seek science-based titles that will help them become healthier and more spiritually aware. As New Age is continuing to expand into other categories, many titles that were once the provinces of health, psychology, self-help and spirituality (to name a few) have now assumed the New Age mantle."

One side of the coin may actually be interesting. While, for example, there are now studies or "scientific analysis" on topics such as how "evoking love can counteract the effects of fear and stress", "the science that supports intuitive thought" and books "that explores the curative benefits of sound", the other side is a road strewn with pitfalls, since "the amalgam of the New Age genre with mind/body/self-help" is even more popular than the scientific analysis category.

Coming books that exemplify this New Age fusion provide various links between a wide variety of topics, such as yoga, astrology, diet, physical health, positive karma etc. etc.. You can take an Astrological Approach to Health and Wellness, Use writing as a Sacred Path, Reclaim Virtue or take part in Enlightened Activism.

However not all New Age titles espouse new principles. There is an extraordinary market for well-conceived, well-packaged reissue books — including titles that have existed for years in multiple editions." These books include the hundred-year-old The Kybalion... #1 in the occultism category on Amazon Kindle, "new editions of Napoleon Hill's first book, The Law of Success, and a new edition of The Hermetica, a collection of Greek-Egyptian magical writings".

For many in the West, yoga is simply a system of physical exercise, a means of strengthening the body, improving flexibility, and even healing or preventing a variety of bodily ailments. But if we inquire into the history and philosophy of yoga we discover that, much more than a system of physical exercise for health, Yoga is an ancient path to spiritual growth.

So how did all these beliefs and practices become so widespread? While there is no doubt that there were a number of factors that contributed towards the increasing popularity of New Age beliefs, the church has to shoulder it's burden of responsibility. It had become, and to a very large extent continues to be, a hierarchal organization largely focused on self preservation and feathering it's own nest. In fact, somewhere along the way, with and more fiction than fact in it's teachings (pie in the sky teachings about heaven, Calvinist predestination, Gory unbiblical versions of "hell" etc.), the church had (and has) almost completely lost the essentials (and simplicity) of the Gospel, and were (are) thus unable to provide people with the answers they were (are) looking for.

With no answers from the church, and little or no peace in the world, it is little wonder then that the vacuum was quickly filled with an influx of alternative ideas about the human spirit and the cosmos. The 'holy books' of eastern cultures were discovered, translated, published and became widely available. Highly educated people like Emerson "began to read Hindu and Buddhist scriptures, and examine their own religious assumptions against these scriptures". As far as they were concerned a loving God would not let so many millions of people go astray, so there had to be truth in their scriptures as well.

Besides which, while the basic reasons for the popularity of New Age teaching is that it professes to answer people's desires for meaning and fulfillment, extend spiritual experiences and guidance, put forward answers to Earth's difficult questions, and offers hope for peace among people (a utopian tomorrow), the acquisition of power and/or knowledge that is spiritual and supernatural is much of the lure. People seem to crave knowledge that is not ordinarily available to everyone.

It has to be emphasized that, although the New Age Movement professes a broad-minded openness to all religions, its basic underlying philosophy is completely at odds with Christianity. Listed below is a short summary of some of the more common beliefs.

God: The very title "God" is a misnomer, since 'he' is usually considered to be an impersonal life force, consciousness or energy, present in all creation, including man. God does not actually "do" anything, He just is. Because "God" is an abstract concept simply referring to a power or force within one's self, 'He' is often referred to as God-consciousness, Self-Realization, The I AM, Higher Self etc. Therefore, whether

one sees 'god' as mother or father, god or goddess is a matter of personal preference. Eventually man will become part of this energy.

Jesus was not and is not the only Christ, nor is he God, but a man who evolved spiritually to the state of being "the Christ".. In other words, He was more in touch with his godhood than most humans are. After illustrating the divine principle of "God within us all," Jesus ascended to a place of distinction to live among the Masters of the Spiritual Hierarchy. He is one of many ascended masters - a way-shower, whose function is to awaken humanity and illumine the path.

The Bible: Is just another holy book but, on the whole, cannot be trusted since it has been tampered with over the centuries, the victim of innumerable additions and deletions.

Sin And Evil: Because there is no transcendent God who has set the standard, there is no absolute good or evil and no rules or absolute moral imperatives. This effectively does away with the Biblical concept of sin. Because sin does not exist, there is no need for repentance or forgiveness, and Jesus did not die for our sins. Man's problem is that he is lacking in enlightenment, and needs to become conscious of his "inner divinity." This directly contradicts Biblical teachings that men are sinners who need a savior and must be disciples of Christ in order to inherit eternal life.

Religion: All religions and religious teachings lead to the same goal. All are equally of merit. There are many different paths to the goal of spiritual perfection. No one path is the only correct path. Again, this does not make logical sense. Virtually all religions contradict each other on major points.

Man: The soul is part of the universe and never dies, but is reborn or reincarnated in different physical bodies in a succession of future lives. Some believe that after death the soul, or essence of the person comes back in another form to continue spiritual evolvement, and that good or bad "karma" earned in the present lifetime determines one's subsequent incarnation. Humans should seek to progress to higher states of consciousness and higher planes of existence.

Satan: There are different views on satan in the New Age world. Many believe him to be a mighty being of light who has made tremendous sacrifices for the good of mankind specifically, to help us evolve and reach our full potential.

In The Secret Doctrine, Helena Blavatsky said

"Lucifer was really the first Archangel who was transformed by the church into Lucifer or Satan because he is higher and older than Jehovah, and had to be sacrificed to the new dogma.”

Alice Bailey, trailblazing apostle and leading writer of the New Age Movement, described him as a mighty being of light and the "Ruler of Humanity".

Benjamin Creme, a leading lecturer and proponent of the New Age literally equates him with God, and says we are all a part of the "divine" Lucifer. He says,

“Lucifer is seen by Christian groups as the devil. It is nothing of the kind! Lucifer is really the name of the great angel Who ensouls the human kingdom. Every human soul is an individualized part of one great oversoul. The name of that great oversoul, which is divine, is Lucifer.” and “Lucifer is the name of a great Angel, not an upstart in heaven who revolted against God and was put down into the nether regions as the Devil. That is a complete misinterpretation. Lucifer means light, and comes from the Latin lux, lucis, meaning light. It is the name of the Angel Who ensouls the human kingdom; every person, therefore, is a fragment of Lucifer.”

David Spangler: In his book Reflections on the Christ David Spangler, a new age philosopher and author tells his followers that,

"Lucifer, like Christ, stands at the door... and knocks." Also "Lucifer comes to give to us the final gift of wholeness. If we accept it then he is free and we are free. This is the Luciferic initiation. It is one that many people now, and in the days ahead, will be facing, for it is an initiation in the New Age."

In Lucifer Rising - Part 2, Carl Teichrib writes

"For a time the Theosophical Society published Lucifer magazine, a monthly periodical which proclaimed the inverted doctrine of Lucifer coming to redeem humanity. In the February, 1917 issue of Theosophy, the publication of the United Lodge of Theosophists in Los Angeles, an article reprinted from an early edition of Lucifer magazine gives a detailed account of Theosophical creation:

"And, when God said: 'Let there be light,' Intelligence was made and light appeared. "Then, the Intelligence which God had breathed forth, like a planet detached from the Sun, took the form of a splendid Angel and the heavens saluted him with the name Lucifer.”

Some New Agers await the advent of the Lord Maitreya, contending that Buddha, Muhammad, Confucius, Jesus, and many others were "Christs" but one greater than all of them will soon come to usher in the New Age.

The fact that New Agers have little or no time for Christianity, does not prevent them from borrowing words, phrases and concepts from the Bible, which could, to the uninitiated or gullible, make some of them appear to be "Christian".

In a slight variation of vocabulary, many New Agers today maintain that we are Christ, have a Christ nature, a Christ within, or a Christ essence, to demonstrate that we are divine. According to Emerson, and many countless others since then, we are all Christs whose limitations are only the result of our failures to have achieved proper perception. Again, here is some of what is being taught, and believed.

“In you, as in each human being, there is a dimension of consciousness far deeper than thought. It is the very essence of who you are. We may call it presence, awareness, the unconditioned consciousness. In the ancient teachings, it is the Christ within, or your Buddha nature." Eckhart Tolle, Stillness Speak. Pg. 13.

"Christ is your God-essence or the Self, as it is sometimes called in the East. The only difference between Christ and presence is that Christ refers to your indwelling divinity regardless of whether you are conscious of it or not, whereas presence means your awakened divinity or God-essence." Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. Pg. 104.

"As we flew home on Cathay Pacific Airlines I began to think to myself, "We are all like the clay Buddha covered with a shell of hardness created out of fear, and yet underneath each of us is a 'golden Buddha,' a 'golden Christ' or a 'golden essence,' which is our real self." Jack Canfield's story "The Golden Buddha," Chicken Soup for the Soul 101 Stories to Open the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit. P. 71.

“...if I sent Jesus, then I would send Mohammed, Buddha, Krishna, and all of my great revolutionaries. Then what would happen? Is Jesus really my son, any more than the others - or for that matter, any more than every guy and gal is my son and daughter? You are all my children. And "Christ" means Universal Consciousness. You are all the Christ for whom you seek." channeled through Allen Michael, GOD - Unlimited Ultimate Mind Speaks, Starmast Publications, 1982, p. 15. [29]

2. THE THEOLOGY OF THE NEW AGE MOVEMENT

In recent years the New Age movement has come out of the closet in the Church and in the world much more than any other time in history. The New Age movement is made up of those who follow a potpourri of beliefs and practices that fall outside the boundaries of the major traditional religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, animism, and Buddhism). Its manifestations are protean. Many Christians view the New Age movement as merely self-indulgent silliness.

Unfortunately, there's far more to the movement than astrology, crystals, weird workshops, and psychobabble. Many New Age spiritual leaders have a firmly entrenched anti-Christian worldview, and harbor a special hatred for Christianity. Some New Age leaders believe that the Fall was really man's ascent into knowledge, assisted by Lucifer - whom they hail as the bringer of light and wisdom. These New Age teachers expect an imminent, apocalyptic transformation that will lead humanity into the New Age. By acts of men or by an act of "spirit," earth will be cleansed of those who refuse to evolve. In the New Age, there will be world government; the economy will be remade to promote "sharing." Traditional morality and traditional families will disappear.

Orthodox religions - especially Christianity Islam and Judaism - are considered "separative" and "obsolete"; in the New Age, they too will vanish.

For the last 140+ years, New Age leaders worldwide have followed the false light of Theosophy; they now whisper sweet lies into the itching ears of the powerful - politicians, media moguls, UN officials, foundation grant-makers, and Anglican bishops alike. As the West moves into a post-Christian era, the influence of the New Age movement spreads.

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky blended Eastern religion with Western occultism, establishing the Theosophical movement in 1875 in New York City. Theosophy has influenced occult, spiritualist, "New Thought," and New Age movements around the world since then. For Blavatsky, the LORD is not God; mankind is. She says,

"Man is truly the manifested deity in both its aspects - good and evil." Since mankind is god, it follows that "mankind will become freed from its false gods, and find itself finally - SELF-REDEEMED." Or rather, some of mankind - "the Aryan and other civilized nations"- is "god-informed" and capable of self-redemption. Others, "such human specimens as the Bushmen, the Veddhas of Ceylon, and some African tribes" are "lower human creatures," "inferior races" that are "now happily - owing to the wise adjustment of nature which ever works in that direction - fast dying out. Verily mankind is 'of one blood,' but not of the same essence."

Part of Blavatsky's pantheon is the seven-headed "Serpent of Darkness" bearing the swastika on its crowns, an entity worshipped "in India, among esoteric Buddhists, in Egypt, Chaldea, etc." The Nazis borrowed the swastika symbol and ideas of Aryan racial supremacy from the Thule Society and other German theosophists, and then made their own murderous adaptations to occultism.

In the early 1900s, Alice A. Bailey carried forward the teachings of Theosophy in the United States. She founded the Lucifer Publishing Company in New York City in 1922, and renamed it the Lucis Publishing Company in 1923. Between 1922 and 1949, Bailey published 24 books of "revelations" that she claimed to have channeled from the Tibetan ascended "spiritual master" Djwhal Khul. All these books remain in print, and are widely available.

The influence of Theosophy and Alice Bailey continues to grow a half-century after her death. Robert Muller, a former assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, won the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education in 1989 for his World Core Curriculum. He says,

"The underlying philosophy upon which The Robert Muller School is based will be found in the teachings set forth in the books of Alice A. Bailey by the Tibetan teacher, Djwhal Khul."

What, then, do the New Age prophets teach? Let Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Alice Bailey, Robert Muller, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Neale Donald Walsch, David Spangler, and Matthew Fox speak for themselves - and for the motley crew of "spirit guides," "ascended masters," and "cosmic Christs" whom they have served.

The avatars of the New Age say that humanity is God, and that there is no death. Barbara Marx Hubbard states the creed of the Serpent succinctly: "We are immortal. We are not bound by the limits of the body. We can create new life forms and new worlds. We are gods!" Neale Donald Walsch says the same: "Trust God. Or if you wish, trust yourself, for Thou Art God.” His spirit guide denies death, saying, "There is no 'death.' Life goes on forever and ever. Life Is. You simply change form." Alice Bailey said, "We are all Gods, all the children of the One Father, as the latest of the Avatars, the Christ, has told us." These New Age teachers repeat the lies that the Devil told in Eden: "You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Gen. 3:4-5).

Since we are gods, there is no need for Christ to save us. Instead, as Barbara Marx Hubbard says, "Multitudes of self-saviors is what we are, for those who have eyes to see." How will mankind perform this feat? David Spangler says that we "manifest our heritage as gods in the making" by becoming "a spiritual materialist, or material spiritualist;" now "comes the time to become the servants of evolution" and to "release the light, the love, the wisdom that will bring our renunciation of spiritual estate to its fruition, in the occult redemption of the world." In other words, we are asked to tell God non serviam, and to choose Hell.

New Age teachers invert Christian doctrine about sin, the Devil, and the Fall. Barbara Marx Hubbard says,

"The serpent symbolizes an irresistable [sic] energy that is leading us toward life ever-evolving. First the serpent tempted Eve to eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. It attracted her beyond the animal/human world which knew no separation from the Creator. Then self-awareness came." She adds, "Evil - the devil - is evolution's selection process that constantly weeds out the weaker from the stronger."

A spirit that identified itself to Barbara Marx Hubbard as "Jesus" told her to "love Satan, my fallen brother," and to "forgive Satan for fearing God." Walsch's ectoplasmic friend says that Adam and Eve "are said to have committed Original Sin. I tell you this: it was the Original Blessing. For without this event, the partaking of the knowledge of good and evil, you would not even know the two possibilities existed!" Blavatsky spoke most plainly: "The Fall was the result of man's knowledge, for his 'eyes were opened.' Indeed, he was taught Wisdom and the hidden knowledge by the 'Fallen Angel."

These New Age teachings lead inexorably to praise of the Darkness. Walsch's statement that God is "the Darkness that creates the Light, and makes it possible" mirrors Blavatsky's dictum that "According to the

tenets of Eastern Occultism, DARKNESS is the one true actuality, the basis and the root of light ... Light is matter, and DARKNESS, pure Spirit." Alice Bailey likewise says that those who learn to meditate will see that "darkness is pure spirit." Followers of Bailey's New Age path will find that "each contact with the Initiator leads the initiate closer to the centre of pure darkness ... a centre or point of such intense brilliance that everything fades out and at the place of tension, and at that darkest point, let the group see a point of clear cold fire."

Theosophists make it clear that in the contest between God and the Devil, they side with the Devil. Blavatsky says,

"It is but natural ... to view Satan, the Serpent of Genesis, as the real creator and benefactor, the Father of Spiritual mankind. For it is he who was the 'Harbinger of Light,' bright radiant Lucifer, who opened the eyes of the automaton created by Jehovah."

According to Alice Bailey, the revolt of the angels against God was part of "the divine plan of evolution;" the fallen angels "descended from their sinless and free state of existence in order to develop full divine awareness upon earth."

David Spangler, like Blavatsky, praises Lucifer as "the angel of man's evolution. He is the angel of man's inner light." He says that "Lucifer comes to give us the final gift of wholeness," and as we move into a new age", "each of us in some way is brought to that point which is termed the Luciferic initiation. Spangler sees this as "an initiation into the New Age. It is an initiation of leaving the past and moving into the new, shedding our guilts and fears ... and becoming whole and at peace because we have recognized our inner light and ... the light of God."

The New Age prophets deny orthodox teaching about Christ. Alice Bailey says that "Christ taught also that the Kingdom of God is on Earth and told us to seek that Kingdom first and let all things go for its sake." Jesus Christ said otherwise to Pilate while he was on trial for his life: "My kingship is not of this world" (Jn. 18:36) - a rebuke to utopians who seek to build a New Jerusalem on earth by human action, and also to those who enrich themselves and abuse or dominate others "in the name of God." Bailey denies hell and Christ's atonement for man's sin; instead, "the concept of hell" will be replaced by "an understanding of the law which makes each man work out his salvation upon the physical plane, which leads him to right the wrongs which he may have perpetrated in his lives on Earth, and which enables him eventually to 'clean his own slate'." The deal that Bailey offers is that instead of being saved and forgiven through Christ's death and resurrection and being told like the good thief "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in

Paradise" (Luke 23:43), we are left with the unforgiving law of karma and the requirement to right all the wrongs of all our past lives ourselves.

For Barbara Marx Hubbard, the Second Coming will occur "when the Christ within the people of Earth awakens simultaneously in a Planetary Pentecost." Robert Muller echoes his mentor Alice Bailey in saying that after the New Age Christ "reappears," he will help mankind to set its affairs aright; he will then leave Earth again forever, saying "I have to turn My sight to other troubled and unfinished celestial bodies. I now pronounce you Planet of God." As might be expected from a man who has channeled "a disembodied entity" for 20 years, David Spangler says, "Christ is the perfect balance to Lucifer." Like Matthew Fox, Spangler proposes to replace Jesus with the "cosmic Christ;" "any old Christ will not do, not if we need to show that we have something better than the mainstream Christian traditions. It must be a cosmic Christ, a universal Christ, a New Age Christ. The Christ is universal. It is cosmic. It always has been." Note the pronoun: Spangler calls Christ "it." The Christology of the New Age savants earns this Scriptural rebuke:

"Every spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God. This is the spirit of antichrist, of which you heard that it was coming, and now it is in the world already." (1 John. 4:2-3)

New Age writers follow the Gnostic tradition, denying that birth, life, and the body are good. Neale Donald Walsch says, "Birth itself is a death, and death a birth. For in birth, the soul finds itself constricted within the awful limitations of a body, and at death escapes those constrictions again." This is, almost word for word, what the Theosophist Alice Bailey wrote: "Birth establishes the soul in the true prison, and physical death is only the first step toward liberation."

Denial of the goodness of the body leads to giving a "get out of Hell free" card to Hitler. As Neale Donald Walsch says, "Hitler went to heaven….There is no hell, so there is no place else for him to go." After all, according to Walsch's incubus, Hitler was doing his victims a favor by killing them; his deeds were "mistakes," not crimes: "The mistakes Hitler made did no harm or damage to those whose deaths he caused. Those souls were released from their earthly bondage, like butterflies emerging from a cocoon. ... When you see the utter perfection in everything - not just in those things with which you agree, but (and perhaps especially) those things with which you disagree - you achieve mastery." The price of "mastery" is to see "utter perfection" in Auschwitz and Treblinka. David Spangler's spirit friend, an entity named "John," likewise said, "We naturally do not identify life with the physical body, consequently, to us, the loss of your physical form is not a tragedy ... The death of millions of people in itself is not a tragedy for us, for it simply means their birth into our domains."

Walsch's "God" says that Hitler does not deserve blame for his acts - but the rest of humanity is responsible for allowing them to happen; "The purpose of the Hitler Experience was to show humanity to itself." Walsch's imp repeats what Alice Bailey said in September 1939, as World War II began: "Blame not the personalities involved ... They are only the product of the past and the victims of the present. At the same time, they are the agents of destiny, the creators of the new order and the initiators of the new civilisation; they are the destroyers of what must be destroyed before humanity can go forward along the Lighted Way. They are the embodiment of the personality of humanity. Blame yourselves, therefore, for what is today transpiring." A similar argument has been common for a generation in American courtrooms: the criminal is not accountable for his evil deeds; instead, "society" - everybody else - is guilty.

The New Age philosophers define evil as matter, selfishness, and the refusal to embrace change. Alice Bailey says, "The domination of spirit (and its reflection, soul) by matter is what constitutes evil;" at the human level, "the true nature of cosmic evil finds its major expression" in "materialistic selfishness and the sense of isolated separativeness." David Spangler has a similar definition of evil. It "seeks a reductionist

simplicity," "cannot abide change," "cannot abide complexity," is "fixated upon its sense of particularity," "is the dimension of separation," and "abhors diversity and seeks conformity and sameness." This is the same way that some liberals in politics and the churches describe those who are not "PC." For Walsch's god, the basis of goodness is knowledge: "The mistake, therefore, is not in choosing what is best for you, but rather, in not knowing what is best." This belief might explain why some "progressives" see education as the panacea for all social ills,

For New Age teachers, spiritual growth is not the fruit of taking up the Cross and following Christ. Instead, as Barbara Marx Hubbard says,

"Your highest spiritual beings, even now, are telling you that each of you has access to an inner teacher ... They tell you that through a process called 'initiation,' you can transform yourself into an 'ascended master'."

Perhaps "initiation" is more dangerous than Ms. Hubbard lets on; Alice Bailey says, "each contact with the Initiator leads the initiate closer to the centre of pure darkness." Walsch's god does not favor obedience to God's will: "Obedience is not growth, and growth is what I desire." Instead, there is this alternative:

"No kind of evolution ever took place through denial. If you are to evolve, it will not be because you've been able to successfully deny yourself things you know 'feel good,' but because you've granted yourself these pleasures - and found something even greater. For how can you know that something is 'greater' if you've never tasted the 'lesser'?"

In the same way that the New Age teachers invert theology, they also invert morality. Walsch's celestial confidant told him that: "There's no such thing as the Ten Commandments. ... God's Law is No Law." As a result, Walsch's god approves of sexual activity by children and teenagers, saying

"In enlightened societies offspring are never discouraged, reprimanded, or 'corrected' when they begin to find early delight in the nature of their very being. ... Sexual functions are also seen and treated as totally natural, totally wonderful, and totally okay."

Walsch's goblin does not say whether the enlightened little ones are doing it solo, with their friends, with their siblings, or with adults. Barbara Marx Hubbard says, "The break-up of the 20th century procreative family structure is a vital perturbation needed for the breakthrough of the 21st century cocreative family structure." For the sake of the Divine Self, Neale Donald Walsch denounces fidelity and marriage vows: "Betrayal of yourself in order not to betray another is Betrayal nonetheless. It is the Highest Betrayal." Indeed, family members who won't move into the New Age should be left behind. Barbara Marx Hubbard says, "But if members of our family choose to remain where they are, we have no moral obligation to suppress our own potential on their behalf. In fact the suppression of potential is more 'immoral' than growing beyond our biological relationships." Once our bodies, minds, and souls are drained dry by free sex and trafficking with the spirit world, we can - and ought to - choose to die. As Barbara Marx Hubbard says, "Those who have more to create choose to live on until they are finished with their work. When we feel that our creativity has run its course, we gracefully choose to die. In fact, it seems unethical and foolish to live on."

Both Barbara Marx Hubbard and Neale Donald Walsch would rewrite the Lord's Prayer, making it a hymn to the Divine Self. Barbara Marx Hubbard's version is:

"Our Father/Mother God... Which Art In Heaven... Hallowed Be Our Name... Our Kingdom Is Come... Our Will Is Done... Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread... Forgive Us Our Trespasses As We Forgive Those Who Trespass Against Us... Leave Us Not In Temptation But Deliver Us From Evil... For Ours Is The Kingdom, Ours The Power, Ours The Glory, For Ever And Ever. Amen."

3. RELIGIOUS CHANGES REQUIRED FOR A NEW AGE

For mankind to enter the New Age, we must abandon the traditional religions, especially the monotheistic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Alice Bailey said,

"Palestine should no longer be called the Holy Land; its sacred places are only the passing relics of three dead and gone religions. ... Judaism is old, obsolete, and separative and has no true message for the spiritually minded which cannot be better given by the newer faiths; the Moslem faith has served its purpose and all true Moslems await the coming of the Imam Mahdi who will lead them to light and to spiritual victory; the Christian faith also has served its purpose; its Founder seeks to bring a new Gospel and a new message that will enlighten all men everywhere."

Bailey's "Christ" says

"There is no need for any man to join the Christian Church in order to be affiliated with Christ. The requirements are to love your fellowmen, lead a disciplined life, recognise the divinity in all faiths and all beings, and rule your daily life with Love."

By contrast, the real Christ says to his disciples,

"Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16:15-16)

Bailey's call to "recognise the divinity in all faiths" is belied by her hatred for traditional religions. This avatar of New Age globalism was willing to destroy the Vatican if necessary. In 1946, she wrote:

"The atomic bomb belongs to the United Nations for use (or let us rather hope, simply for threatened use) when aggressive action on the part of any nation rears its ugly head. It does not essentially matter whether that aggression is the gesture of any particular nation or group of nations or whether it is generated by the political groups of any

powerful religious organisation, such as the Church of Rome, who are as yet unable to leave politics alone."

Another of Bailey's targets - before, during, and after the Holocaust - was Judaism. Bailey wrote that the Jews' sufferings were "the working out of the retributive aspect of the Law of Cause and Effect ... Though much that has happened to the Jews originated in their past history and in their pronounced attitude of separativeness and nonassimilability, and in their emphasis upon material good ... the agents who have brought the evil karma upon them equally incur the retributive aspects of the same law." When Bailey accuses Jews of "separativeness" and "emphasis upon material good," she is making - in her own terms - the most serious accusation possible, since she says "the true nature of cosmic evil" is "the supreme evil of materialistic selfishness and the sense of isolated separativeness."

In January 1939, two months after the Kristallnacht pogrom in Germany, Bailey wrote:

"the Jew ... must let go of his own separative tendencies and of his deep sense of persecution. ... There must ... be a realisation by the Jew and Gentile of equal responsibility and equal liability for the present world difficulty."

In 1948, Bailey said that "the Jewish people ... forget that millions in the world today have suffered as they have suffered and that - for instance - there are eighty per cent of other people in the concentration camps of Europe and only twenty per cent Jews. The Jew, however, fought only for himself, and largely ignored the sufferings of his fellowmen in the concentration camps."

In Western Europe and North America since 1945, any public figure suspected of anti-Semitism has been made a pariah. This sanction has not been applied to Alice Bailey, her teachings, and her Theosophist followers. On the contrary. Betsy Stang, an "interfaith minister" at the Wittenberg Center and an active participant in the URI, said,

"Some of Bailey's writing is really remarkable, very Gothic. You would put her with Blavatsky, Gurdjieff, and Steiner. She is historically very important. In my mind, Bailey has beautiful, poetic evocations in her books."

Other New Age writers refrain from anti-Semitic rants. Instead, they spit hatred at orthodox Christians, whom they denounce as "fundamentalists." Robert Muller said at the 1996 United Religion Initiative (URI) summit conference that the United Religions must tame "fundamentalism" and profess faithfulness "only to the global spirituality and to the health of this planet. Two of the worst principles and words still used on planet Earth are: fundamentalism and infallibility." Muller explained: "Look at all the religious wars we had during the Middle Ages. Killing in the name of God was the rule. Religion was discredited to the point that the French Revolution abolished religions as troublemakers. Even today, many regard religions as troublemakers. This is why the common values between all religions should be expressed, we can move, we must move to a global spirituality." Muller poses two alternatives for us: worship Gaia, or face the Jacobins' response to religious "troublemakers." (Unfortunately, the crimes of many Christians, hierarchs and laity alike, provided a basis for revolutionary hostility - in 1789, 1917, 1936, and other occasions.)

Dr. Jim Garrison, former President of the State of the World Forum (SWF) and a self-described follower of "inclusive Buddhism," said in 1998 that the days of dogmatic religion are ending:

"I think that Judaism and Christianity and Islam have done real damage to the planet because they have too many answers. ... If my theology is an impediment I have to get rid of my theology. ... The conservative Jews and the conservative Christians and the conservative Imams they think what I'm saying is heresy, but I just say to these people, your box is too small, get into a bigger box."

A coffin, perhaps? Garrison said that the SWF honors the mavericks and the heretics; "during times of transition orthodoxies fall and the heretics and the mavericks are the people creating the new orthodoxy." Garrison to traditional monotheism: change or die; I'll be in charge soon. Welcome to the New Religious Order, in which the only heresy will be orthodoxy.

Blavatsky hated orthodox Christianity, and her greatest fury was directed at the Vatican. In 1877, she wrote that Isis Unveiled

"is in particular directed against theological Christianity, the chief opponent of free thought. ... We cast our gauntlet at the dogmatic theologians who would enslave both history and science; and especially at the Vatican, whose despotic pretensions have become hateful to the greater portion of enlightened Christendom."

Likewise, in 1888, she described "the Latin Church" as "intolerant, bigoted and cruel to all who do not choose to be its slaves."

Nature abhors a vacuum, and no throne long remains vacant. If the New Age movement were to dethrone Christ the King, who would take His place? If Mikhail Gorbachev has his way, the god of the New Religion will be nature. He has said,

"Nature is my god. To me, nature is sacred. Trees are my temples and forests are my cathedrals."

Muller has also hailed the Earth as God:

"Hindus call our earth Brahma, or God, for they rightly see no difference between our earth and the divine."

Blavatsky expected the current world religions to disappear; the "religion of the ancients is the religion of the future." The "religion of the ancients" was the worship of the Dragon and the Sun; Blavatsky claimed that "there was a time when the four parts of the world were covered with temples sacred to the Sun and the Dragon." The memory of this ancient religion was "the origin of the new Satanic myth" of Christians. The restored worship of the Dragon and the Sun is what Blavatsky expects to be the New Religion of the future. In 1931, Hilaire Belloc warned about the emergence of such a Satanic, post-Christian religion:

"When the gods of the New Paganism come they will not be merely insufficient, as were the gods of Greece, nor merely false; they will be evil. One might put it in a sentence, and say that the New Paganism, foolishly expecting satisfaction, will fall, before it knows where it is, into Satanism."

New Age writers say that we will accept the New Religion when we understand that all religions have the same source and the same end. Alice Bailey said, "The day is dawning when all religions will be regarded as emanating from one great spiritual source; all will be seen as unitedly providing the one root out of which the universal world religion will inevitably emerge." Likewise, Episcopal Bishop William Swing believes that all religions "come together at the apex, in the Divine." Knowingly or not, their affirmation of religious unity echoes Blavatsky, who said that all religions have "been derived from one primitive source," and that separate religions are "but shades of human error and the signs of imperfection." Blavatsky's turgid writings of 1877 have become the received truth for some present-day religious liberals.

In 1946, Bailey said that all of us must accept religious unity, or "humanity is headed towards a religious war which will make the past war appear like child's play; antagonisms and hatreds will embroil entire populations and the politicians of all the nations will take full advantage of the situation to precipitate a war which may well prove the end of humanity. There are no hatreds so great or so deep as those fostered by religion."

"What is a bigger terrorist threat than religion in the world today? There is none,"

Thus, the New Age leaders lay a subtle spiritual trap. They warn accurately of the dangers of religious violence - and then propose a totalitarian spiritual counterfeit as the means to avert this peril.

Bailey expected the New Religion, which she called the "Church Universal," to emerge by the close of the twentieth century - in other words, now. Bailey says that "Only those will remain as guides and leaders of the human spirit who speak from living experience, and who know no creedal barriers; they will recognise the onward march of revelation and the new emerging truths. These truths will be founded on the ancient realities but will be adapted to modern need and will manifest progressively the revelation of the divine nature and quality." Thus, liberal Protestants and Catholics will have a happy place in the New Religion. Bailey believed that the New Religion would work closely with the United Nations: "Thus the expressed aims and efforts of the United Nations will be eventually brought to fruition and a new church of God, gathered out of all religions and spiritual groups, will unitedly bring to an end the great heresy of separateness." Robert Muller has gone further, proposing to deify the United Nations:

"At the beginning the UN was only a hope. Today it is a political reality. Tomorrow it will be the world's religion."

Bailey said that in the New Religion, there will be two levels of religious practice - one for the masses and one for the adepts of the New Age, those who "know the potency of formulas, mantrams and invocations and who work consciously." Fellow-theosophist David Spangler said, "The new spirituality may well have aspects that resemble shamanism. It will have aspects drawn from all the great faith traditions, but it will add something new, arising perhaps from a deeper experience of our co-creative relationship with the Earth and with God." Barbara Marx Hubbard called for a "meta-religio," a "new ground of the whole" to be created by the United Religions: "We long not for a new religion, but for the evolution of religion, such that we embody the qualities of our master teachers and become conscious cocreators with the divine universal intelligence ourselves."

With the New Religion, there will be spiritual totalitarianism. New Age leaders agree that the last 2,000+ years - the Age of Pisces - were a time for development of individual identity and personality. In the coming Age of Aquarius, this will change. People will happily let go of individualism and merge their own goals and identity into that of the whole race. As Alice Bailey said, "Selfishness, as we now understand it, will gradually disappear, for the will of the individual will voluntarily be blended into the group will." After all, the existence of separate persons is an illusion; we are all really part of The One. David Spangler says, "We come into the age of the group again ... and now in the next two thousand years or so man leans how to blend his divine centre in wholeness." Neale Donald Walsch's familiar spirit says, "Social evolution is demonstrated by movement towards unity, not separatism."

In language that foreshadows Bishop Swing's blather about the emergence of a "global soul," Teilhard de Chardin, whom New Age writers now hail as a prophet, says,

"The organization of human energy ... is directed and pushes us towards the ultimate formation, over and above each personal element, of a common soul of humanity."

The goal of human evolution, for Teilhard, is that people must "acquire the consciousness, without losing themselves, of becoming one and the same person." If we understand things rightly, we will "love the preordained forces that unite" us; "a natural union of affinity and sympathy will supersede the forces of compulsion." As Orwell said of his protagonist, Winston, at the end of 1984, "He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother."

4. POLITICAL CHANGES REQUIRED FOR A NEW AGE

The New Age avatars proclaim their commitment to democracy and tolerance. However, they propose totalitarian solutions to mankind's urgent, undeniable problems. The sacrifice of freedom and the acceptance of unlimited government power will - as always - be for our own good; necessity will be the excuse of tyrants. The New Age movement uses the theory of evolution - a theory of inevitable and desirable Progress - as a justification for whatever policies are needed to drive humanity and the planet to the next great leap upward.

Alice Bailey and her followers at the Lucis Trust have repeatedly praised revolutions and dictatorships, approving them as part of the workings of "the Plan." In September 1939, she said, "The men who inspired the initiating French revolution; the great conqueror, Napoleon; Bismarck, creator of a nation; Mussolini, the regenerator of his people; Hitler who lifted a distressed people upon his shoulders; Lenin, the idealist, Stalin and Franco" were "all expressions of the Shamballa force"- a force which Bailey extolled. She viewed the dictatorships of her time as a positive part of human evolution, fostering humanity's "power to regard himself as part of a whole." Alice Bailey criticized the Stalinist regime in the USSR but said that "The true communistic platform is sound; it is brotherhood in action and it does not - in its original platform - run counter to the spirit of Christ."

Foster Bailey carried on Alice Bailey's work after her death in 1949. In a 1972 book called Running God's Plan, he wrote that the Russian Revolution had been "an outstanding hierarchical success. It has been demonstrated that hopeless, illiterate peasants when stimulated and given a chance become industrial workers." Historians describe these same events as forced industrialization, forced collectivization, and man-made famine. Bailey's "hierarchy" also approved of the Chinese Cultural Revolution: "The cultural revolution in China was begun a few short years ago. This also is an hierarchical project. Amazing changes have been achieved in that short period." According to the Black Book of Communism, there were approximately 20 million victims of Soviet Communism, and 65 million victims of the Chinese regime. Evidently, the Theosophists' spiritual Hierarchy condones mass bloodshed to achieve its goals.

The implosion of the Soviet Empire has not dampened the enthusiasm of today's New Age writers for world government and socialism. Robert Muller favors using the European Union as the basis for "World Union," unless the UN is "rapidly transformed" into "an effective world political union." Then, "since Russia reaches into the North of Asia, the old dream of Eurasia can be implemented. The plan of Robert Schuman who dreamt of integrating the African countries into Eurafrica can be implemented. In the meantime, the US can organize the Americas from Alaska to the [sic] Tierra del Fuego and the two unions can be integrated into a World Union."

Projects for the world government would include global prohibition of alcohol, a global ID card for all, global police and military forces under the control of "the Ministry of Peace" (the same term that Orwell used in 1984 for Big Brother's military force), a global secret service, "world penal legislation," a global property register similar to "what the young French revolutionaries did for France," a global income tax, and a global computer database to house "all data on our planet, on its environment, and on humanity."

If this sounds like world Communism, Muller says that might not be altogether bad:

"We should ask an honest man like Mikhail Gorbachev to tell us what was good in certain cases in communism and which would be useful for humanity. Not everything is totally bad in any system. Even Hitler did something worthwhile, still existent today, when he asked for the building of the Volkswagen, the cheap, economic car for ordinary, low income people."

achieve his goals, Muller favors abolition of "nationalism" and of "the big, multinational companies"; this could be achieved either by a "people's revolution or a revolution of the scientists, thinkers, visionaries, prophets, globalists, futurologists and synthesizers of this planet."

Neale Donald Walsch's spirit guide also favors communism and world government. The god says that highly evolved beings - smart ETs - practice pure communism:

"They share everything. With everyone. ... All the natural resources of their world, of their environment, are divided equally, and distributed to everyone." Nations must disappear. Instead, there should be a world government, backed up with a World Court and a world "peacekeeping force." Each nation would have two representatives in the Congress of Nations, and "representation in direct proportion to a nation's population" in the People's Assembly.

Under this plan, the U.S. would have as many votes in the Congress of Nations as the Sudan, where Christians are sold into slavery or executed. The U.S. would have about one-fourth as many votes in the People's Assembly as the People's Republic of China, which persecutes Christians and enforces a one-child policy on families. Would anyone care to guess how long our Constitutional protections of freedom of religion and freedom of speech (which are already under seige) would survive?

Barbara Marx Hubbard has a similar vision of an earthly utopia: "In the past our glorious visions of the future - heaven, paradise, nirvana - were thought to happen after death. The newer thought is that we do not have to die to get there! We are not speaking here of life after death in some mythical heaven, but life more abundant in real time in history. We are speaking of the next stage of our social evolution."

Matthew Fox concluded The Coming of the Cosmic Christ with a vision of "Vatican III," to be called by Pope John XXIV to define the doctrine of the Cosmic Christ as intrinsic to faith. The future Pope has replaced the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith with a board of grandmothers, and has also dealt firmly with dissenters: "Still another action taken by this pope has been to gather all the Opus Dei bishops of the world on one island where, it is said, they are undergoing a two-year spiritual retreat that includes a critique of the history of fascism and Christianity on the one hand and an inculcation of creation spirituality on the other. It is said these bishops do body prayer three times daily and art as meditation four hours per day. The native people of the island are the instructors for the art as meditation classes. Women have assumed the office of bishop in their respective diocesan sees." In other words, the rightist extremists are to be brainwashed.

There is literary precedent for sending undesirables to islands. In Brave New World those who do not fit into society are sent to islands of their choice; World Controller Mustapha Mond leaves the misfits to their own devices and does not force them to change. Thus, Fox's utopia would treat its dissenters more harshly than Huxley's dystopia.

David Spangler likewise points toward a totalitarian future. He says: "From the depths of the race a call is rising for the emergence of a saviour, an avatar, a father-figure ... who can be for the race what the ancient priest-kings were in the dawn of human history." The priest-kings of Sodom, Egypt and Babylon will return to rule us. Spangler describes "true democracy" in terms reminiscent of Rousseau's "General Will": "All spiritual societies are hierarchical. They cannot function in any other way. It is not the will of the majority that is important. It is the will of the whole. Democracy as we know it is a quantitative form of government. True democracy, however, is qualitative, and that is what we must return to." Such "true democracy" is to be our future, for Spangler says "theocratic democracy" is "what we are moving towards for humankind."

Spangler says that today's "new gurus" are "accepting their divinity without becoming inflated by it;" they are "givers of life, and they are forming the basis for the government of the future. This will be a government

that is authoritarian in the same way that the laws of thermodynamics or of gravity are authoritarian." The authority of the New Regime will be as omnipresent and inexorable as the authority of the laws of Nature; each subject will say, "I can only follow this rhythm, this pattern," for we will be "at one with the currents of life.”

Teilhard de Chardin explicitly and repeatedly favored totalitarianism. In March, 1939, Teilhard wrote that the time for "egotistical autonomy" had passed; "the modern totalitarian regimes, whatever their initial defects, are neither heresies nor biological regressions: they are in line with the essential trend of 'cosmic' movement." In August 1941, Teilhard said, "the real divide, the real human conflict of today, is not between democrats, fascists, communists, and Christians, but between those who do and do not believe that there is a Humanity to be constructed over and above man." On another occasion, he said, "A progressive democrat is not fundamentally different from a really progressive totalitarian."

The teachings of Alice Bailey, Teilhard de Chardin, Robert Muller, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Neale Donald Walsch, and David Spangler provide the theory of totalitarian New Age government and economics; the programs of Gorbachev's State of the World Forum and the Earth Charter Campaign describe the proposed practice.

Forum President Garrison states the mission of the State of the World Forum: to mobilize "creative minorities" who will set the agenda for the "new phase of human development." Gorbachev considers those who participate in the Forum to be members of a "global brain trust" for a new civilization. Both men agree that world government is needed. In 1995, Garrison said that "Over the next 20 to 30 years, we are going to end up with world government. It's inevitable."

In his 1995 keynote speech to the Forum, Gorbachev said, "We should take a sober and unprejudiced view of the strengths and weaknesses of collectivism, which is fraught with dictatorship. But what about the individualism of Western culture? At the very least, something will have to be done about its purely consumerist orientation." To further his agenda for a "new civilization," Gorbachev would develop new "moral maxims," "values common to all humankind"; "it is not enough to say 'Thou shalt not kill.' Ecological education implies, above all, respect and love for every living being. It is here that ecological culture interfaces with religion. Honoring diversity and honoring the Earth create the basis for genuine unity." In the new morality, "honoring diversity and honoring the Earth" will replace God.

To build the "new civilization," Forum speakers have offered all the progressive nostrums that they can pull from the shelf: upholding "indigenous cultures" as the ideal, reforming education to create the "new global citizen," legalizing marijuana, revising the world's major religions to "produce more democratic, egalitarian, and individual-friendly spirituality," rejecting the idea of original sin, redefining truth as "a way of knowing in which we learn to honor our woundedness and our dependency on others," and creating a new "integral culture" in which "all roles and relationships will be redefined: inner spiritual values, intimate family relationships (between men and women, and among adults, children, and elders); communities; nations, ethnic groups, and cultures; global institutions and the relationship of humans with the natural world."

All will have to accept the new, holistic world view; the 1998 Forum session on "Our Common Enterprise" said, "The future thus belongs to those who can see interconnections, who can appreciate the whole as well as the parts, and who can blend one aspect of life with another. To be authentic in the future will be to be integrated."

5. THE GREEN RELIGION

Blending the world’s religions together and bringing them under the umbrella of the United Nations has been high on the Global Green Agenda for many years. Dr Robert Muller, until recently the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, and its #2 ranked official, appears to be the driving force behind the plan to create a new United Religion. His passion for this spiritual agenda is readily apparent, "My great personal dream is to forge a tremendous alliance between all religions and spiritual groups, and the UN. We desperately need a United Religions Organisation to bring reconciliation, unity and peace to all the peoples of our world."

Dr Muller famously described himself as "A divine motivator ... the wise man of the UN ... the shaman of the UN ... the man through whom God speaks ... the spokesman of Christ ...” Now this 'divine motivator' was the co-founder of UNESCO and a key architect behind many of the UN's most important environmental policies and plans. Dr Muller is also one of the key figures behind the drive to establish a universal global consciousness. He is the co-Chairman of the World Commission for Global Consciousness and Spirituality and the co-Chairman, alongside Mikhail Gorbachev, of the World Wisdom Council. Dr Muller is also the Chancellor of the UN's University of Peace, which he founded on a mountain in Costa Rica. Why did he choose this location? Because of this ancient prophecy:

"The Great Spirit is in every animal, in every bird, butterfly, flower, insect, leaf and grass you see. The Great Spirit is also in you, the Creator's children. Please take care of the wonderful nature created by God and some day, from this mountain, you will see the birth of a civilization of peace spread to the entire world."

Dr Muller’s clearly outines his vision for a New Green Religion on his websites In one article he recounts a conversation between himself and God, as equals no less. These are quotes from that article

God: "Dear Robert, congratulations for having finished your 4000 ideas. May I ask you: which one do you consider the most important?"

I: Well, my most important idea and conclusion after all my adult life as a world civil servant is this: The United Nations must be vastly strengthened to resolve the major global problems henceforth increasingly confronting humanity and the earth. It must be empowered to adopt and enforce world laws and regulations. Let us perform this miracle in the House of Mica, on the shores of the River of the Rising Sun,

wherefrom our indigenous brethren prophesized that a civilization of peace will extend to the entire world.

God: "Thank you, dear Robert, for what you are recommending. Perhaps after all, the greatest jewel of my Creation, the Earth, can be saved.“

The first attempt at global interfaith dialogue occurred at the first ‘Parliament of World Religions’ held in Chicago in 1893. This conference involved representatives from most established and emerging religious groups and also marked the introduction of the Baha’i faith into the United States. In the early 1990s a group of interfaith dialogue proponents decided to organize a centenary conference to be held in 1993, also in Chicago.

Dr Muller was one of the primary organizers, along with Hans Kung and Dr. Gerald Barney, and was a keynote speaker. Kung is a Catholic priest who previously held the powerful position of ‘Expositor of Theology’ at the Vatican and is the founder of the Global Ethic Foundation, another organization strongly pushing the concept of human global consciousness. The conference included more than 8,000 representatives from 150 different religious and spiritual groups. Dr Muller’s speech was entitled 'A Proposal to establish a United Nations of Religion'. It received a prolonged standing ovation and his proposal was endorsed in the conferences joint communique. “Our earth cannot be changed unless in the not too distant future an alteration in the consciousness of individuals is achieved. This has already been seen in areas such as war and peace or economy and ecology. And it is precisely for this alteration in inner orientation, in the entire mentality, in the "heart," that religion bear responsibility in a special way. Religion must be a unifier and peacemaker, not a cause for violence and separation.”

The centenary parliament led to the formation of interfaith dialogue initiatives by many religious groups, most notably the Vatican, and secular organisations such as the United Nations, the Gorbachev Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative, and many UN associated NGOs. However, it was the United Religions Initiative (URI), proposed by Robert Muller during the conference that has made the most dramatic progress.

The URI’s stated aims are “unity among religions” and "manifesting love for the Earth." Working closely with Muller on this daring initiative is the Anglican Bishop William Swing of Grace Episcopal Cathedral in San Francisco. Although Muller is the visionary behind United Religions and the catalyst between the major parties involved, Swing has become the initiative’s figurehead and spokesperson. However, the direct involvement of the United Nations in this project has been evident from the beginning. Swing relates how Muller first contacted him in 1993 about heading up a worship celebration on its behalf: "Three and a half years ago, a telephone call arrived in San Francisco from the United Nations asking if we, at Grace Cathedral, would host a great interfaith worship service honoring the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in our city." This request, and subsequent conversation with Muller, is allegedly what prompted Swing to become involved in the United Religions Initiative. He continues, "I got out of bed

the next day determined to commit the rest of my life to an initiative that would create a United Religions which would, in appropriately spiritual ways, parallel the United Nations." The URI has attracted a diverse group of followers, and seems to be remarkably skilful in appealing to their different worldviews. Reverend James Davis, an Anglican minister from New York stated "We've never seen any organization build coalitions as quickly or as successfully as the United Religions Initiative." Huston Smith, a scholar of comparative religions and author of The World's Religions, a standard reference in religious studies, describes the URI as "by far the most significant global interfaith effort.” The URI claims that more than 1,000 religious groups, representing 600 million people, have endorsed the URI charter. These include the Dalai Lama, state churches in China, various Jewish Rabbis, Sufi’s (a Muslin sect), the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, radical feminists, deep ecologists, creation spiritualists, kaballahists and various neopagan groups. It has also received favourable comments from the United Nations and the Vatican. The preamble to the URI Charter is as follows:

• We, people of diverse religions, spiritual expressions and indigenous traditions throughout the world, hereby establish the United Religions Initiative to promote enduring, daily interfaith cooperation, to end religiously motivated violence and to create cultures of peace, justice and healing for the Earth and all living beings.

• We respect the uniqueness of each tradition, and differences of practice or belief. • We value voices that respect others, and believe that sharing our values and wisdom can lead us

to act for the good of all. • We believe that our religious, spiritual lives, rather than dividing us, guide us to build community

and respect for one another.

• Therefore, as interdependent people rooted in our traditions, we now unite for the benefit of our Earth community.

• We unite to build cultures of peace and justice. • We unite to heal and protect the Earth.

• We unite to build safe places for conflict resolution, healing and reconciliation.

• We unite to support freedom of religion and spiritual expression, and the rights of all individuals and peoples as set forth in international law.

• We unite in responsible cooperative action to bring the wisdom and values of our religions, spiritual expressions and indigenous traditions to bear on the economic, environmental, political and social challenges facing our Earth community.

• We unite to provide a global opportunity for participation by all people, especially by those whose voices are not often heard.

• We unite to celebrate the joy of blessings and the light of wisdom in both movement and stillness. • We unite to use our combined resources only for nonviolent, compassionate action, to awaken to

our deepest truths, and to manifest love and justice among all life in our Earth community.

It goes on to say: The root of this ecological crisis is a spiritual crisis. Just as the religions and spiritual traditions of the world teach respectful interaction with a sacred whole, so must spiritual values and moral imperatives help humanity to rediscover a reverence for all life and respect for the sacredness of the whole of Planet Earth. Therefore, we call for interfaith cooperation in furthering this vision for love and protection of the Earth, reverence for life, and harmony with all living beings. As suggested by Swing, the United Religions Initiative is intended to be to religion what the United Nations

has become to global politics, unifying the world’s religions as the UN is unifying the world’s nations. Bishop Swing confirmed these plans, "The URI will be a spiritual United Nations. And what better place to give it birth than the Bay Area, which gave birth to the present UN." Bishop Swing also states, "The URI will offer the world a powerful new vision of hope - the vision that the deepest stories we know can now cease to be causes of separation between people, and become instead the foundation for a reunited humanity. Religions need the URI. Bombs are exploding in the name of God in cities throughout the world, religious persecution is more prevalent now than ever before, religious extremists are demanding and obtaining nuclear weapons, and still there is no neutral arena where all of the religions can engage each other. The URI, in time, aspires to have the visibility and stature of the United Nations. It will have global visibility and will be a vital presence in local communities all over the world."

The United Nations has granted the URI official ‘liaison status’, which means that in return for UN financial support the URI will “co-operate closely with the U.N. and its organizations to complement the U.N.’s political, diplomatic and social mandates, influence U.N. policy and support its programs.” At a recent UN-sponsored Interfaith Conference, Bishop Swing issued a challenge for a new global civilization, “We stand on the threshold of a new world order that may be defined either by an increasing polarization that fuels a spiral of escalating conflict and violence, or by growing global cooperation that calls the human race to work across national, ethnic and religious boundaries to serve a larger global good.” Bishop Swing recently apologized for two millennia of Christian evangelism. His apology not limited to ‘religious violence’ committed by Christians, it also includes regret for "proclaiming that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior of all" and for seeking "to make the whole world Christian". The URI strongly condemns all forms of religious fundamentalism; in fact the need for a new spirituality is often based on the intolerant attitude of evangelical Christians and radical Muslims’. Swing states “Because some day, the ascendancy of militant fundamentalist voices of politically aspiring religions might be so pervasive that a United Religions will need to be created in order to save religions from these fundamentalists.”

The URI arose out of, and is the culmination of, the interfaith movement that began with the 1893 Parliament of World Religions. It is inextricably tied to the quest for a new spirituality that would unify the planet in a ‘transformed global society’. The URI is the fullest expression of this movement now. The current model of unity in diversity will characterize the United Religions Initiative for a while. However, the final phase of the Global Green Spiritual Agenda will be the "full end to the great heresy of separateness."

The final green religion will be the blending of all religions into one unified expression of spirituality based on reverence for our shared planet and human interconnectedness with all living beings. No doubt anyone one who refuses to accept this new spirituality will be labelled an intolerant radical fundamentalist. In the wake of an earth-shattering crisis, such as the one described in A United World, ‘fundamentalists’ are likely to be blamed for all the world’s problems. A new world religion, in addition to a new world order, will be gratefully received by most given a crisis of sufficient magnitude.

6. PANTHEISM: GOD IS ALL AND ALL IS GOD The religion of the new age movement is one which promotes pantheism and there is no better description of this religious influence than the movie Avatar. Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film written and directed by James Cameron, and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Joel David Moore, Giovanni Ribisi and Sigourney Weaver. The film is set in the mid-22nd century, when humans are mining a precious mineral called unobtanium on Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi—a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. The film's title refers to the genetically engineered Na'vi-human hybrid bodies used by a team of researchers to interact with the natives of Pandora.

Development on Avatar began in 1994, when Cameron wrote an 80-page scriptment for the film. Filming was supposed to take place after the completion of Cameron's 1997 film Titanic, for a planned release in 1999, but according to Cameron, the necessary technology was not yet available to achieve his vision of the film. Work on the language for the film's extraterrestrial beings began in Summer 2005, and Cameron began developing the screenplay and fictional universe in early 2006. Avatar was officially budgeted at $237 million. Other estimates put the cost between $280 million and $310 million for production and at $150 million for promotion. The film was released for traditional viewing, 3-D viewing (using the RealD 3D, Dolby 3D, XpanD 3D, and IMAX 3D formats), and "4-D" viewing. The stereoscopic filmmaking was touted as a breakthrough in cinematic technology. Avatar premiered in London on December 10, 2009, and was internationally released on December 16 and in the United States and Canada on December 18, to critical acclaim and commercial success. The film broke several box office records during its release and became the highest-grossing film of all time in the U.S. and Canada and also worldwide, surpassing Titanic, which had held the records for the previous twelve years. It also became the first film to gross more than $2 billion. Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three, for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction. The film's home release went on to break opening sales records and became the top-selling Blu-ray of all time. Following the film's success, Cameron signed with 20th Century Fox to produce two sequels, making Avatar the first of a planned trilogy. The blockbuster has provoked vigorous discussion of a wide variety of cultural, social, political, and religious themes identified by critics and commentators, and the film's writer and director James Cameron has responded that he hoped to create an emotional reaction and to provoke public conversation about these topics

David Quinn of the Irish Independent wrote that the spirituality depicted "goes some way towards explaining the film's gigantic popularity, and that is the fact that Avatar is essentially a religious film, even if Cameron might not have intended it as such." At the same time, Jonah Goldberg of National Review Online objected to what he saw in the film reviews as "the norm to speak glowingly of spirituality but derisively of traditional religion." James Cameron has said that he "tried to make a film that would touch people's spirituality across the broad spectrum." He also stated that one of the film's philosophical underpinnings is that "the Na'vi represent that sort of aspirational part of ourselves that wants to be better, that wants to respect nature, while the humans in the film represent the more venal versions of ourselves, the banality of evil that comes with corporate decisions that are made out of remove of the consequences." Film director John Boorman saw a similar dichotomy as a key factor contributing to its success: "Perhaps the key is the marine in the wheelchair. He is disabled, but Mr Cameron and technology can transport him into the body of a beautiful, athletic, sexual, being. After all, we are all disabled in one way or another; inadequate, old, broken, earthbound. Pandora is a kind of heaven where we can be resurrected and connected instead of disconnected and alone." Critics compared the Na'vi with Hindu gods such as Krishna and Rama, traditionally depicted with blue skin and tilak marks on their foreheads. The Times of India suggested Avatar was a treatise on Indianism "for Indophiles and Indian philosophy enthusiasts", starting from the very word Avatar itself. A Houston Chronicle piece critiqued the film in terms of the ancient Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, commenting on the Na'vi visual similarity with Rama and Krishna—avatars central to the respective epics and traditionally depicted with blue skin, black hair, and a tilak mark on the forehead. Another critic found that elements of the film's plot resembled such teachings and concepts of Hinduism as reincarnation of the soul, ecological consciousness, and incarnations of deities on Earth, commending Avatar and its director for "raising the global stature of Hinduism in months", while criticizing them for substantiating the western reluctance to accept anything oriental in its pristine form. Cameron calls the connection a "subconscious" reference: "I have just loved ... the mythology, the entire Hindu pantheon, seems so rich and vivid." He continued, "I didn't want to reference the Hindu religion so closely, but the subconscious association was interesting, and I hope I haven't offended anyone in doing so." He has stated that he was familiar with a lot of beliefs of the Hindu religion and found it "quite fascinating". Answering a question from Time magazine in 2007, "What is an Avatar anyway?" James Cameron replied, "It's an incarnation of one of the Hindu gods taking a flesh form. In this film what that means is that the human technology in the future is capable of injecting a human's intelligence into a remotely located body, a biological body." In 2010, Cameron confirmed the meaning of the title to the Times of India: "Of course, that was the significance in the film, although the characters are not divine beings. But the idea was that they take flesh in another body." Following the film's release, reviewers focused on Cameron's choice of the religious Sanskrit term for the film's title. A reviewer in the Irish Times traced the term to the ten incarnations of Vishnu. Another writer for The Hindu concluded that by using the "loaded Sanskrit word" Cameron indicated the possibility that an encounter with an emotionally superior—but technologically inferior—form of alien may in the future become a next step in human evolution—provided we will learn to integrate and change, rather than conquer and destroy. Maxim Osipov of ISKCON argued in The Sydney Morning Herald that "Avatar" is a "downright misnomer" for the film because "the movie reverses the very concept [that] the term 'avatar'—literally, in Sanskrit,

'descent'—is based on. So much for a descending 'avatar', Jake becomes a refugee among the aborigines." Vern Barnet in Charlotte Observer likewise thought that the title insults traditional Hindu usage of the term since it is a human, not a god, who descends in the film. However, Rishi Bhutada, Houston coordinator of the Hindu American Foundation, stated that while there are certain sacred terms that would offend Hindus if used improperly, 'avatar' is not one of them. Texas-based filmmaker Ashok Rao added that 'avatar' does not always mean a representative of God on Earth, but simply one being in another form—especially in literature, moviemaking, poetry and other forms of art. Explaining the choice of the color blue for the Na'vi, Cameron said "I just like blue. It's a good color ... plus, there's a connection to the Hindu deities, which I like conceptually." Commentators agreed that the blue skin of the Na'vi, described in a New Yorker article as "Vishnu-blue", "instantly and metaphorically" relates the film's protagonist to such avatars of Vishnu as Rama and Krishna. An article in the San Francisco Examiner described an 18th-century Indian painting of Vishnu and his consort Laksmi riding the great mythical bird Garuda as "Avatar prequel" due to its resemblance with the film's scene in which the hero's blue-skinned avatar flies a gigantic raptor. Asra Q. Nomani of The Daily Beast likened the hero and his Na'vi mate Neytiri to images of Shiva and Durga. Discussing explicit or implicit similarities between the film and the philosophy of Hinduism, reviewers suggested that, just as Hindu gods, particularly Vishnu, become avatars to save the order of the universe, the film’s avatar must descend to avert impending ultimate doom, effected by a rapacious greed that leads to destroying the world of nature and other civilizations. Maxim Osipov observed that the film's philosophical message was consistent overall with the Bhagavad Gita, a key scripture of Hinduism, in defining what constitutes real culture and civilization. Critics saw an "undeniably" Hindu connection between the film's story and the Vedic teaching of reverence for the whole universe, as well as the yogic practice of inhabiting a distant body by one’s consciousness[59] and compared the film's love scene to tantric practices. Another linked the Na'vi earth goddess Eywa to the concept of Brahman as the ground of being described in Vedanta and Upanishads and likened the Na'vi ability to connect to Eywa with the realization of Atman. One commentator noted the parallel between the Na'vi greeting "I see you" and the ancient Hindu greeting "Namaste", which signifies perceiving and adoring the divinity within others. Others commented on Avatar's adaptation of the Hindu teaching of reincarnation, a concept, which another author felt was more accurately applicable to ordinary human beings that are "a step or two away from exotic animals" than to deities. Writing for the Ukrainian Day newspaper, Maxim Chaikovsky drew detailed analogies between Avatar's plot and elements of the ancient Bhagavata Purana narrative of Krishna, including the heroine Radha, the Vraja tribe and their habitat the Vrindavana forest, the hovering Govardhan mountain, and the mystical rock

chintamani. He also opined that this resemblance may account for "Avatar blues"—a sense of loss experienced by members of the audience at the conclusion of the film. Some Christian writers worried that Avatar promotes pantheism and nature worship. A critic for L’Osservatore Romano of the Holy See wrote that the film "shows a spiritualism linked to the worship of nature, a fashionable pantheism in which creator and creation are mixed up." Likewise, Vatican Radio argued that the film "cleverly winks at all those pseudo-doctrines that turn ecology into the religion of the millennium. Nature is no longer a creation to defend, but a divinity to worship." According to Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi, these reviews reflect the Pope's views on neopaganism, or confusing nature and spirituality. On the other hand, disagreeing with the Vatican's characterization of Avatar as pagan, a writer in the National Catholic Reporter urged Christian critics to see the film in the historical context of "Christianity's complicity in the conquest of the Americas" instead. Ross Douthat, a conservative columnist of The New York Times, called Avatar "the Gospel According to James" and "Cameron's long apologia for pantheism [which] has been Hollywood's religion of choice for a generation now." In The Weekly Standard, John Podhoretz criticized the film's "mindless worship of a nature-loving tribe and the tribe's adorable pagan rituals." Christian critic David Outten disputed that "the danger to moviegoers is that Avatar presents the Na'vi culture on Pandora as morally superior to life on Earth. If you love the philosophy and culture of the Na'vi too much, you will be led into evil rather than away from it." Outten further added: "Cameron has done a masterful job in manipulating the emotions of his audience in Avatar. He created a world where it looks good and noble to live in a tree and hunt for your food daily with a bow and arrow.”. Cameron said, 'Avatar asks us to see that everything is connected, all human beings to each other, and us to the Earth.' This is a clear statement of religious belief. This is pantheism. It is not Christianity." Other Christian critics wrote that Avatar has "an abhorrent New Age, pagan, anti-capitalist worldview that promotes goddess worship and the destruction of the human race" and suggested that Christian viewers interpret the film as a reminder of Jesus Christ as "the True Avatar". Conversely, other commentators concluded that the film promotes theism or panentheism rather than pantheism, arguing that the hero "does not pray to a tree, but through a tree to the deity whom he addresses personally" and, unlike in pantheism, "the film's deity does indeed—contrary to the native wisdom of the Na'vi—interfere in human affairs." Ann Marlowe of Forbes agreed, saying that "though Avatar has been charged with "pantheism, its mythos is just as deeply Christian." Avatar teaches a gospel but not the Christian Gospel. Instead, “Avatar” is Cameron’s long apologia for pantheism — a faith that equates God with Nature, and calls humanity into religious communion with the natural world. In Cameron’s sci-fi universe, this communion is embodied by the blue-skinned, enviably slender Na’Vi, an alien race whose idyllic existence on the planet Pandora is threatened by rapacious human invaders. The Na’Vi are saved by the movie’s hero, a turncoat Marine, but they’re also saved by their faith in Eywa, the “All Mother,” described variously as a network of energy and the sum total of every living thing. If this narrative arc sounds familiar, that’s because pantheism has been Hollywood’s religion of choice for a generation now. It’s the truth that Kevin Costner discovered when he went dancing with wolves. It’s the metaphysic woven through Disney cartoons like “The Lion King” and “Pocahontas.” And it’s the dogma of George Lucas’s Jedi, whose mystical Force “surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together.” Hollywood keeps returning to these themes because millions of Americans respond favorably to them. From

Deepak Chopra to Eckhart Tolle, the “religion and inspiration” section in your local bookstore is crowded with titles pushing a pantheistic message. A recent Pew Forum report on how Americans mix and match theology found that many self-professed Christians hold beliefs about the “spiritual energy” of trees and mountains that would fit right in among the indigo-tinted Na’Vi. As usual, Alexis de Tocqueville saw it coming. The American belief in the essential unity of all mankind, Tocqueville wrote in the 1830s, leads us to collapse distinctions at every level of creation. “Not content with the discovery that there is nothing in the world but a creation and a Creator,” he suggested, democratic man “seeks to expand and simplify his conception by including God and the universe in one great whole.” Today there are other forces that expand pantheism’s American appeal. We pine for what we’ve left behind, and divinizing the natural world is an obvious way to express unease about our hyper- technological society. The threat of global warming, meanwhile, has lent the cult of Nature qualities that every successful religion needs — a crusading spirit, a rigorous set of ‘thou shalt nots,” and a piping-hot apocalypse. At the same time, pantheism opens a path to numinous experience for people uncomfortable with the literal-mindedness of the monotheistic religions — with their miracle-working deities and holy books, their virgin births and resurrected bodies. As the Polish philosopher Leszek Kolakowski noted, attributing divinity to the natural world helps “bring God closer to human experience,” while “depriving him of recognizable personal traits.” For anyone who pines for transcendence but recoils at the idea of a demanding Almighty who interferes in human affairs, this is an ideal combination. Indeed, it represents a form of religion that even atheists can support. Richard Dawkins has called pantheism “a sexed-up atheism.” (He means that as a compliment.) Sam Harris concluded his polemic “The End of Faith” by rhapsodizing about the mystical experiences available from immersion in “the roiling mystery of the world.” Citing Albert Einstein’s expression of religious awe at the “beauty and sublimity” of the universe, Dawkins allows, “In this sense I too am religious.” The question is whether Nature actually deserves a religious response. Traditional theism has to wrestle with the problem of evil: if God is good, why does he allow suffering and death? But Nature is suffering and death. Its harmonies require violence. Its “circle of life” is really a cycle of mortality. And the human societies that hew closest to the natural order aren’t the shining Edens of James Cameron’s fond imaginings. They’re places where existence tends to be nasty, brutish and short. Religion exists, in part, precisely because humans aren’t at home amid these cruel rhythms. We stand half inside the natural world and half outside it. We’re beasts with self-consciousness, predators with ethics, mortal creatures who yearn for immortality. This is an agonized position, and if there’s no escape upward — or no God to take on flesh and come among us, as the Christmas story has it — a deeply tragic one. Pantheism offers a different sort of solution: a downward exit, an abandonment of our tragic self-consciousness, a re-merger with the natural world our ancestors half-escaped millennia ago.

7. THE CONSPIRITUALITY PHENEOMENA

Still not convinced that the New Age movement is something that Christians should take seriously? This is a common attitude. Just because some Hollywood crazies believe in reincarnation and astrology, why should we pay attention? Hopefully, you’ve already begun to see what a global movement this has been. The New Age forces have been coming together in a very dramatic, forceful way.

The last 150 to 200 years have seen a radical shift in thinking throughout the world. With the Internet, ideas (good and bad) are interchanged in record time. As a result, the world is changing faster than ever. Values are eroding at breakneck speed. Today, the New Age ideas are gaining traction quickly. Through the global nature of the Internet, these ideas are directly reaching into the homes of people. 20 years ago, parents had much more control over what children were exposed to at a young age. Now, malleable minds are seeing all sorts of evil - from pornography to political ideas to false gods - on a daily basis. Now, more than ever, we must be informed about the ideas and trends of the outside world. Even though we are not of the world, we have to live life in it.

There is no better understanding of the power of the New Age Movement than to fully investigate and understand what is known as Conspirituality. The term Conspirituality was first given credence by Charlotte Ward in her essay “The Emergence of Conspirituality” released in 2011. The premise was that there had been a significant change in the truth movement where the new age movement had fused with it creating a political/spiritual hybrid.

The abstract to this informative essay states

“The female-dominated New Age (with its positive focus on self) and the male-dominated realm of conspiracy theory (with its negative focus on global politics) may seem antithetical. There is a synthesis of the two, however, that we call ‘conspirituality’. We define, describe, and analyse this hybrid system of belief; it has been noticed before without receiving much scholarly attention. Conspirituality is a rapidly growing web movement expressing an ideology fuelled by political disillusionment and the popularity of alternative worldviews. It has international celebrities, bestsellers, radio and TV stations. It offers a broad politico-spiritual philosophy based on two core convictions, the first traditional to conspiracy theory, the second rooted in the New Age: 1) a secret group covertly controls, or is trying to control, the political and social order, and 2) humanity is undergoing a ‘paradigm shift’ in consciousness. Proponents believe that the best strategy for dealing with the threat of a totalitarian ‘new world order’ is to act in accordance with an awakened ‘new paradigm’ worldview.”

The essay mounts significance evidence that the New Age Movement has merged with elements of the truth movement where there has been a fusion of the political and spiritual because people are so disenchanted with politicians that they are more akin to also seeking for spiritual solutions. Despite the shared views mentioned above that nothing happens by accident, nothing is as it seems, and everything is connected (Barkun 4), the New Age and conspiracy theory seem to have little in common. It is therefore a surprise to discover that hybrid worldviews have developed and seem to be thriving. British author and activist David Icke anticipated conspirituality in 1996: When I meet people who are investigating the conspiracy but are not into the spiritual, I find people full of paranoia, full of fear … because they can't see the spiritual solutions… When I meet so many people in the New Age area … I often find people who, so often, think that if you address the negative, then that's really bad. You must only address the positive… But if you don't address the negative, either the negative gets more negative or stays as it is. What you don't do is change it. Conspirituality appears to be a means by which political cynicism is tempered with spiritual optimism. It curbs the belligerence of conspiracy theory and the self-absorption of the New Age. The events of 9/11 exposed many to conspirituality. As rumours that it was an inside job undertaken to start a War on

Terror spread via the web66—and continue to spread—some will have found providers, such as Icke who received publicity for his predictions that the shadow government would undertake a 'false flag' operation around 2001 to provoke a war with Islam, more appealing than conventional political commentators or the radical right. Surfers would have shopped around. Those who encountered conspirituality, but had not previously held New Age beliefs in a shift, might have focused instead on providers' political interpretations or transposed ideas of a shift into concerns about 'earth changes' or 'waking up to what was going on'. They might also have been attracted, at a time of crisis, by the optimism intrinsic to core conviction 2 (concerning a mass shift in consciousness).

From a Christian perspective this has significant consequences because it means that millions of people who have woken up to the understanding that there is an agenda to establish an elitist new world order, and who are committed to exposing this cover up, are then exposed and corrupted new age principles and thoughts which permeate the solutions being offered. This then significantly alters their perspective of organized religion, especially Christianity which they then see as part of the same elitist agenda to control the masses.

Two of the biggest proponents of Conspirituality are Peter Joseph’s Zeitgeist Movement and David Icke.

Zeitgeist: The Movie, by Peter Joseph was originally released in 2007 as a non-commercial performance work - only later to evolve into an unprecedented internet sensation - Zeitgeist: The Movie is an aesthetically driven documentary film divided into three sections - each a commentary on what the director calls angles of "Social Mythology". The first section, entitled "The Greatest Story Ever Told", explores the topic of comparative religion, specifically the controversial relationship between early pagan religions and their influence on the Judeo-Christian system of belief as it is practiced and defined today. The second section, entitled "All the World's a Stage" explores the events of September 11th 2001 from the stand point of inconsistencies, inaccuracies and improbabilities with regard to the official account put forward by the United States Government. The third section, entitled "Don't Mind the Men Behind the Curtain" explores a series of monetary related and power issues, including central banking, money creation, wars for profit and their pretexts, terrorism, the consequence of excessive security, government corruption and much more. A sequel was then released called Zeigeist Addendum.

These films have been incredibly influential. The Zeitgeist movement has been credited as being one of the precursors and influences of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement. Television viewers voted it as one of the most important documentaries to see. This movie has been a dramatic, important piece of propaganda in the New Age movement, working towards the New World Order. This movie was shown in campuses nationwide.

In this movie, the claim is that Jesus is just one of many solar deities or sun gods. The movie claims that Jesus’ life is roughly equivalent to Horus the Egyptian god. Over and over, the movie says that these gods had various traits in common, such as being born on December 25, born of a virgin, having 12 disciples, dying and being resurrected, and so on.

There are many interesting things to note here, and most of them stem from what is either vast ignorance or deliberate lies from the creators of this movie. Not only does the movie bungle many facts about the life of Christ, the facts about various mythologies that it tries to equate with Christianity are also changed to fit the argument.

If Jesus were truly a simple copy of Horus and other mythological beings, Christians would have great cause for doubt and concern. However, the whole argument is based on lies. They just hope that the listeners are truly the uniformed, ignorant creatures that they accuse Christians of being, never doing any independent research or learning for themselves what the facts of the matter truly are. Jesus, the historical figure, existed. We have a historical record of his life on earth. He is not mythology, nor is his story stolen from other religions to make a leader for the Age of Pisces.

Let’s just take the case of the Egyptian god Horus, which is the main example used in the film. They use Horus because they say that many of the other “solar messiahs” are based on his story, which is then allegedly recounted for the watcher. The writers of Zeitgeist are hoping you just take their word for it, because they make up all sorts of things just to make it sound convincing. Here’s a quote straight from the movie:

Broadly speaking, the story of Horus is as follows: Horus was born on December 25th of the virgin Isis-Meri. His birth was accompanied by a star in the east, which in turn, three kings followed to locate and adorn the new-born savior. At the age of 12, he was a prodigal child teacher, and at the age of 30 he was baptized by a figure known as Anup and thus began his ministry. Horus had 12 disciples he traveled about with, performing miracles such as healing the sick and walking on water. Horus was known by many gestural names such as The Truth, The Light, God's Anointed Son, The Good Shepherd, The Lamb of God, and many others. After being betrayed by Typhon, Horus was crucified, buried for 3 days, and thus, resurrected.

“Broadly speaking” is right! This passage alone is riddled with inaccuracies. It is a gross oversimplification that Horus was the sun god of the Egyptians, but sadly that is one of the more accurate statements they make in the movie. He was in fact the entire sky god, but eventually was merged with Ra, the actual sun god. However, this is a complicated story and the Egyptians were constantly changing and revising the roles of their various gods to suit the needs of the current Pharaoh. In Egyptian mythos, Horus did not battle with Set on a nightly basis, but in one epic battle of the gods. In the context of the film, Ra fits the description of dying and being born again much more accurately than Horus. However, Ra’s death and resurrection (the process of dawn, daylight, and dusk) occur on a daily basis.

In the myths of ancient Egypt, Horus was not born on December 25, and his mother’s name was Isis, not “Isis-Meri”. The word “Meri” in ancient Egyptian just meant “beloved” and may have occasionally been used as an adjective to describe Isis, but even that is stretching the translation a bit thin. One of the renowned supporters of the Horus-Jesus lie is Dorothy M. Murdock. This woman who is commonly known online by

her pseudonym, Acharya S. (She is credited as one of the sources for the movie, and since most of the religious information does not have a source, may actually be the only source the writers consulted for this segment of the movie.) She says, in rebuttal to those who rightly point out that Isis is not “Isis-Meri”:

Firstly, it is important for us to examine where the epithet Meri comes from, what it means, and where it is appropriately used in Hieroglyphs. It is important to note, that such an appellation was in no way exclusive to Isis, in fact, as asserted by Dr. Denise Doxey: ‘Among the most common epithets found in the Middle Kingdom inscriptions are those introduced by a form of the verb mri, ‘love’. However, to have the audacity to assert that such an appellation was never possessed by Isis is close to laughable.

Christians seeking to refute this false version do not assert that such an appellation was never possessed by Isis. The fact is simply that Isis-Meri is not her name. Meri is just an adjective or a term of endearment that was used for many gods and goddesses in the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. To say her name is “Isis-Meri” is to assert something as fact that is not, with the hope that no one notices the sleight of hand and duplicity that is going on in the name of discrediting Jesus.

Furthermore, Egyptians actually did have a date for Horus’ birthday, but it was in July or August. Christmas has nothing to do with Horus. Isis, Horus’ mother, was not a virgin. Osiris was Horus’ father, not Joseph (or Seb as described at a different time in the movie). Horus was never baptized by Anup. Horus did not have a “ministry” at all, but was in fact depicted as a somewhat sickly child rather than a teacher. (And why is the word “prodigal” in there at all? They simply do not even know what they are talking about!) Without rehashing each and every lie, what I want to convey is that the movie goes on in this fashion. The “facts” they recount about the Egyptian mythos aren’t facts at all. At times, there might be a very small grain of truth that is exaggerated beyond recognition. For the most part, the claims are outright inventions told to convince the listeners that Jesus is a fraud.

As an aside: Jesus’ birthday is celebrated on December 25, true, but we are not actually given a date in the Bible for Jesus’ birth date. Most Christians understand and know this is a tradition and custom that was born out of the desire to celebrate Christ’s birth. When Christianity overcame the Roman pagan traditions, the people wanted to keep their old holidays. To compromise, Christ’s Mass, or Christmas, was adopted. While we still may celebrate this holiday in a very holy way, knowing its origins will help us understand that there are actual times that Christian tradition (which is very distinct from God’s word, the Bible!) does borrow from popular culture. This type of cultural drift is precisely why we need to take care not to let evil doctrines influence our beliefs. It is one thing to adapt a holiday into something appropriate to celebrate your own savior, but something far different and much more dangerous to convert to the actual teachings of the New Age (or any other) belief system.

From there, the Zeitgeist movie claims that the Hindu god Krishna, Attis of Phyrigia, Mithra of Persia, and Dionysus of Greece all follow the same pattern that Horus sets up, and culminates in the “most recent solar diety, Jesus Christ.” This is absolutely ludicrous, even from a secular point of view! The other deities that are supposed to be rough equivalents to Jesus are similarly given a reprehensible treatment that any literature or history student of the periods could easily refute.

Then, the Zeitgeist “documentary” takes a turn towards the astrological. As we well know, this is a page right from the Theosophist’s playbook, another New Age ploy to get us to discount Christianity.

First of all, the birth sequence is completely astrological. The star in the east is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, which, on December 24, aligns with the three brightest stars in Orion's Belt. These three bright stars are called today what they were called in ancient times: The Three Kings. The Three Kings and

the brightest star, Sirius, all point to the place of the sunrise on December 25th. This is why the Three Kings "follow" the star in the east, in order to locate the sunrise — the birth of the sun.

The Virgin Mary is the constellation Virgo, also known as Virgo the Virgin. Virgo in Latin means virgin. The ancient glyph for Virgo is the altered "m.” This is why Mary along with other virgin mothers, such as Adonis's mother Myrra, or Buddha's mother Maya begin with an M. Virgo is also referred to as the House of Bread, and the representation of Virgo is a virgin holding a sheaf of wheat. This House of Bread and its symbol of wheat represents August and September, the time of harvest. In turn, Bethlehem, in fact, literally translates to "house of bread.” Bethlehem is thus a reference to the constellation Virgo, a place in the sky, not on Earth.

Wait, didn’t the movie just say Jesus (and Horus) was born in December? No matter that Bethlehem is a real place with a name that just happens to “house of bread,” or that the census was well documented, or that Herod’s reign existed. All of the facts are ignored. All of these things are verifiable facts about the time period and geography in which Jesus was born and spent his childhood. The fact that Bethlehem means “house of bread” does not in any way mean that the place name is really referring to the constellation Virgo.

The narrator also says that Jesus is the Sun who hangs out with his 12 apostles, who are supposed to be the 12 astrological signs. The claim is that the number 12 is proof that the majority of the New Testament is astrological. Again, the facts that there are more than 12 constellations, that all cultures did not agree on all those constellations, that Virgo is not Egyptian at all, that zodiacs and astrology vary wildly from culture to culture, are all ignored by the movie’s writers. They just combine everything together, and claim that it’s all cultural drift. Really, it’s all wild free association on their, with no basis in facts.

Zeitgeist goes on to argue that Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection is really an analogy for the winter solstice, when the sun seems to stay around the same place in the sky for about three days. Jesus didn’t die on December 25. We know exactly when Jesus did die, thanks to the Hebrew calendar’s Passover dates putting his death, burial, and resurrection squarely in Spring, when we celebrate Easter. The movie does nod towards their internal inconsistency at this point, and say that the spring equinox is really when the resurrection occurs, and then it moves on, as if this explains such a ridiculous logical fallacy.

At this point, the well-known concept of the Ages is retold, this time without any Theosophist doing the talking. The attempt to convert the listener to the New Age doctrine does not come with a society or a group to point to, but we’ve already established that these concepts are straight from Theosophy and Freemasonry. The audience is told that Jesus and Joseph are basically the same story retold.

Religion … reduces human responsibility to the effect that "God" controls everything, and in turn awful crimes can be justified in the name of Divine Pursuit. And most importantly, it empowers those who know the truth but use the myth to manipulate and control societies. The religious myth is the most powerful device ever created, and serves as the psychological soil upon which other myths can flourish.

Basically, the Zeitgeist movie’s segment on religion is full of lies and Theosophist, New Age doctrine. Rather than acknowledge the historical presence of Jesus in documents, it twists some mythology in order to argue that obedience to God is slavery. Instead of following God, the only way these people think that humanity can become truly free is if we manage to achieve a sort of godhood on earth. Humans in control of their own destiny, becoming deities – it’s that same lie, told since the Garden of Eden, repackaged in a million ways. The Illuminati, Freemasons, Theosophists, New Agers are all in the service of Satan, trying to bring about the New World Order and Peter Joseph is simply playing into their hands.

Others have also picked up on the fact that the Zeigeist movie is actually doing more harm than good as far as exposing the satanic new world order is concerned. A great article was published on the website http://educate-yourself.org which highlighted how a pro-truth movement like Zeitgeist could still be effectively be benefiting the New World Order.

“To most people this title will sound like an oxymoron, how could Zeitgeist The Movie benefit the New World Order? After all, they are exposing the 911 conspiracy, and the Federal Reserve system. That wouldnt be beneficial at all to them right? That depends on what you think their ultimate goal is. I will submit for your consideration that a world government and reduction of the population is only the beginning of their plans for us. I suggest that, by them being the suppliers of the best conspiracy information available, they gain the trust and attention of the only people that are smart enough, awake enough, left to stop them. They then focus our desire to rebel against another target, usually a target they themselves want destroyed. This system of disinformation is becoming more frequent now that certain truths (like the 911 and Federal reserve stuff) are already well past their ability to control. So they use them for their own purpose, maybe they always intended too.

Let me first point out that Zeitgeist part one (the religion part) has well over 50 factual errors. Some of them are pointed out at this website zeitgeistchallenge.com (http://zeitgeistchallenge.com) which offers cash rewards to anyone that can offer historical evidence concerning many of the claims zeitgeist makes. Here are a few more links of people clearly showing that zeitgeist has lied several times in their movie in order to give credibility to their views.

I know that it is easy to believe the things claimed in the movie, especially if you have been a conspiracy nut (like me) for any length of time, because we have heard Jordan Maxwell, David Icke, and Michael Tsarion, (all closely, and oddly connected btw) have all told us these things are true for so long that I never really saw any reason to look it up for myself. Once I did however I started noticing some serious problems in our “truth movement” not the least of which is that a majority of us are being sold the “New Age” and or freemasonic doctrine hook line and sinker just shortly after we awaken to the “real world.”

We have been told over and over that Christianity is our enemy in this new world, and that all the wars and problems of our past are because of this oppressive force. This is basically reverse psychology, to decode it, simply understand that the Vatican and the catholic church are in direct opposition to Christianity in word and in deed. The illuminati types may well have created or infiltrated this organization as a mask, from under which they have done all their dirty work for hundreds of years. In this way they were able to use our natural resistance to oppression and injustice against us, against our perceptions of Christianity. But they didn’t create Christianity at all, they took it over after 350 years of trying to eliminate it. With the catholic church they basically created a monster intended to be the object of our natural resistance to them. It isn’t now, nor has it ever been representative of the true Christianity, of which they have a well documented history of trying to eliminate completely.

So how does Zeitgeist the movie help the New World Order? You can probably can see that a world government would go over a lot smoother if there were a new world religion. But that is impossible right? How would they pull that off? World religions cannot come about without some kind of serious major event, like for instance aliens showing up and telling us they are our gods or something like that. Hence, the reality of aliens equals world religion and world government, and thanks to the Rockefeller propaganda machine (War of the worlds etc.), it will also mean the persecution of Christians openly and proudly. Its really a win win situation for them. Know that the Rockefeller’s are behind so many of the projects intended to shape our perception of our alien “space brothers” ask yourself why.

While Zeitgeist does not bring the alien factor in to play, it is nonetheless prepping us for this by neutralizing those of us that are aware of this shadow government by creating yet another alternate false reality, to keep those that have the potential to stop them and their ultimate goal, by getting them to fight the wrong enemy. They use someone like George Bush who is obviously not a Christian (google skull and bones bohemian grove etc) to be dangled in front of those people as a representative of Christianity, he has been given a blank check by his controllers to cause as many problems as possible because the net result of it is more distaste toward Christianity, (this is two fold because they need everything to crash, and for us to go into ww3 in order to bring in their system) so like many things they do, it is multi faceted. We need to and to think logically about this, I mean If the N W O are trying to get us to be Christians so

bad so they can control us why are the school systems they push so anti Christian? And why if what Zeitgeist says is true do they need to make so many factual “mistakes”. Why do certain types of conspiracy teachers tell the same easily debunked lie?”
