Message from the President

Welcome to our Autumn 2013 Newsletter.

Our last newsletter promoted the City of Greater Bendigo's Movie in the Park night at Maiden Gully. It was fantastic to see so many residents attend this event. The large attendance (over 800 people) and success of the night has us well placed to be able to host another Movie Night in early 2014 as part of the Summer in the Parks program.

The next few months will see the Maiden Gully Progress Association be involved in providing feedback and working with various organisations on a number of major projects. As outlined at the bottom of this page and on the back page of this newsletter, there are now three separate projects seeking State Government approval for amendments to the Planning Scheme to rezone large areas of land in Maiden Gully - the Marist Brothers Catholic School, the City of Greater Bendigo's Maiden Gully Precinct Structure Plan and Birchgrove Property's Forest Park, Maiden Gully proposal for land at Edwards Road.

All three projects have embraced their Community Consultation obligations (as well as the key issues identified in the Maiden Gully Community Plan that we published in December 2010), and we encourage all residents to get involved and participate in these consultation meetings if you have a view about the projects.

The Maiden Gully Progress Association has also been approached to lead the Maiden Gully community in developing actions so that Maiden Gully can become a Fire Ready Town. The initial work on this project will commence in July/ August 2013. If you would like to be involved, please come along to our next Public Meeting to hear a briefing from representatives of the Lodden Mallee CFA on what is proposed.

Maiden Gully Catholic Education Facility Update

The last few months have seen some significant progress made with this project.

The application for the proposed rezoning of land at the corner of Patas Road and Golf Links Road, Maiden Gully, to accommodate the new Marist Brothers Catholic School was considered at the City of Greater Bendigo Council meeting on the 6th of March 2013. The amendment was adopted by Council and has been forwarded to the State Government Minister of Planning for approval.

Upon receipt of the formal approval from the Minister for Planning, the project will progress to the Planning Permit stage.

Behind the scenes, work has also continued on several other aspects of the new facility. An Establishment Committee has been formed, which will be chaired by Mr Dennis Higgins, a former director of Catholic education in the Sandhurst Diocese and principal of St Liborius Primary School in Eaglehawk. Dennis has also been appointed as the initial Project Manager.

A public meeting was held at St Liborius Primary School on the 30th of April 2013. At this meeting, the Establishment Committee outlined the educational vision for the new P-12 school, discussed the school leadership, provided information on timelines for construction of the new facility, enrolment, uniforms and transport.

The Maiden Gully Progress Association has established strong lines of communication with the newly appointed Establishment Committee (and the Catholic Education Office Sandhurst prior). Future editions of our newsletter will include updates on the important developments for the Project and it will also be discussed at our Public Meetings as appropriate.

Maiden Gully Fire Brigade

It has been a busy and tragic season across Australia for firefighters. Here in Maiden Gully, our calls have more than doubled in the last 12 months. Fortunately, there have been no serious fires in Maiden Gully but your local volunteers have been to Gippsland, Epping, Kerrie and the Grampians as well as to many fires around Bendigo.

Bonfires and Burning off: The Fire Danger Period for 2012/13 officially came to a close with the lifting of restrictions on April 8th but as we all know it is still very dry. Over the coming months, some residents on larger blocks will take the opportunity to burn their build up of dry sticks and branches. Remember to check first with the Council as you may require a permit (no charge) and to notify VicFire on 1800 668 511 before you light up.

More new vehicles: After commissioning our new Isuzu Light Tanker (Tanker 2) prior to Christmas, we have now sold our Toyota Slip-On that has been part of our brigade since 2002. By the end of June, we expect to have a Ford Ranger Twin cab as a Support Unit and a state of the art Medium Tanker replacing the tanker we have had since 1999. The twin cab is being paid for by the Brigade largely from the sale of the Toyota and will carry a lighting plant and provide support to incidents and other activities. The 4WD Medium Tanker (2,400 litres) is provided by the CFA and is a very impressive vehicle. Drop in one Sunday morning and have a look.

Winter Fire Season: Summer finishing does not mean your Brigade goes into recess! Did you know that over 50 Australians die every year as a result of house fires? Now is the time to check the operation of your smoke alarm and make sure your home heating is operating safely. Talk to us if you are not sure about preparing for Winter.

Over the coming months, our firefighters will be raffling a trailer of firewood each Saturday morning outside the shops and occasionally on a Friday night at the IGA Supermarket. We will have brochures available that will help you to have a fire safe winter.

Maiden Gully selected for Fire Ready Town Project

Maiden Gully is one of three towns in the Lodden Mallee Region selected by the Country Fire Authority (CFA) to participate in a Fire Ready Town Project. The Maiden Gully Progress Association has been approached and accepted the invitation to lead the Maiden Gully community in developing actions so that Maiden Gully can become a Fire Ready Town.

The project’s objectives are:

To support the establishment and implementation of local fire safety initiatives. Improve shared responsibility for fire readiness through increased public participation. Enable communities to lead local bushfire planning activities. Improve access to resources across agencies to enable an informed planning approach. Better integrate local knowledge and agency data to provide an inclusive view of community risk.

The Project Plan seeks to implement a similar model to the Tidy Towns and Keep Australia Beautiful Programs. These programs establish a Community Action Group of 8 - 10 people from the local community, who then have responsibility to identify the local issues and come up with workable solutions and action plans to make Maiden Gully a Fire Ready Town. Guidance and support is provided by regional CFA personnel.

It is proposed that the work for the Project will be initially undertaken between July and September 2013, with representatives from Lodden Mallee CFA attending the next Public Meeting of the MGPA on Monday 3 June 2013 to outline what is involved in the Project. We would also like to see nominations for the Committee for the Community Action Group at this meeting.

We encourage all residents to attend the meeting on Monday 3 June 2013 to hear further details of this important Project for Maiden Gully.

If you are interested in joining the Committee, please contact Stuart McKenzie on 0409 852 396, email [email protected] or come along to the meeting on 3 June 2013.

Maiden Gully Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) has taken up a sponsorship with a Victorian police initiative – Eyewatch. Eyewatch is a new way for a community to participate in crime prevention activities and improve community safety. NHW Victoria has provided sponsorship money to assist with the purchase of i-Pads for use at Eyewatch locations, including Bendigo. Police members may now take photographs and post activities as they occur, allowing interaction with community members through Eyewatch. The Bendigo location will open during April. Members of the community will be able to take part in crime prevention activities. It is an on line forum open 24 hours a day. Your next NHW bulletin will detail how to access the site through Facebook.

Since the last Progress Association Newsletter of three months ago, there has been a worrying increase in thefts from motor vehicles. In 70% of reported thefts the vehicle has been left unlocked. This situation gains little sympathy from investigating police. Insurance Companies set certain conditions on cover for contents in motor vehicles. Leaving a vehicle unlocked is not on their agenda. Prowling offenders simply move along a line of vehicles trying every door. Owners lose laptops, mobile telephones, loose cash, sunglasses - anything at all that appeals becomes an easy touch via an unlocked vehicle. Unless the offender is nabbed red handed there is nothing investigating police can take as evidence.

Motorists take heed. When leaving a vehicle, even to purchase petrol, turn the key in the lock. It is an easy habit to learn and, once established as compulsory, very difficult to ignore – locking a vehicle should be an automatic reflex.

Maiden Gully NHW meets on the second Wednesday each month at 7.30 pm at the Maiden Gully Fire Station. Residents are welcome to attend meetings and express their views or concerns.

Maiden Gully Junior Football Club

Footy season is here and the Maiden Gully Junior Football Club is ready to go.

After a busy pre-season organising teams and support we now have two under 9 and one under 12 team hitting the field. Positions are still available in all sides so if your son/daughter wants to be involved with an inclusive, fun and determined club, please come along and join in at any training night.

The club is still running on a limited committee and with the ongoing growth of Maiden Gully, support is required to help keep the club moving forward. With a busy season ahead, fundraising activities are planned and all are invited to get involved. Please visit our website at www.maidengullyjfc.sportingpulse.net/ to stay up to date and informed with what is coming up.

To ensure a successful season and the continued development and growth of the Club, it is important that all those with an interest in football in Maiden Gully get involved in the Maiden Gully Junior Football Club. For further information or to discuss how you might be able to assist, please feel free to contact Jason Lee, President, on 0403 624 207. GO LIONS!

Maiden Gully Marong Lions Club

The function of a Lions Club is to work with the community so that community may benefit by projects not entirely available through other venues. During the first three months of 2013, the Maiden Gully/Marong Lions achieved a great deal.

In January several hundred people gathered at the Maiden Gully Lion’s Park to celebrate an Australia Day Community Breakfast.

The Lions run district auditions for Youth of the Year quests, and frequently sponsor local youth into the Victorian or National finals.

The Lions BBQ trailer is often seen at Council information evenings, auctions, school fetes and private functions.

The Maiden Gully/Marong Lions Club is a member of Victoria’s Keep Australia Beautiful Adopt a Highway program and has accepted responsibility for clearing the Calder Highway of rubbish from Maiden Gully to Marong. The March 3 effort resulted in one and a half tonnes of junk cleared and $9.85 cash profit from can collection. It is a job taken up twice a year.

During a weekend in mid-March, the Club travelled to Balranald for the annual fire wood collection. Some 30 tonne of fire wood was sawn, loaded and delivered back to Bendigo. The Otis Foundation became the main beneficiary for 2013. The remainder will be available to households in need throughout the winter months.

The Club pays out a lot in cash assistance. Several thousand dollars were donated to such varied groups as research into Motor Neurone Disease, the Marong Pre-school, the Marong Fire Brigade, towards a remote school in Zambia as well as help to private individuals striving to achieve their personal goals.

Between now and Christmas the Maiden Gully/Marong Lions will receive numerous requests for assistance. These are all examined on merit, with preference trending towards local community and individual needs. The most satisfying assistance is given without fanfare and without obligation.

The Lions now have a dedicated person to care for the Children’s playground at Maiden Gully. Footpaths are raked, rubbish cleared and the BBQ sparkles. In addition more fill is to be spread around the play area and additional shrubs planted. We are thankful for the voluntary work of this person and trust the picnickers will assist with less leftover lunch on benches and more use of bins provided. The park is becoming a popular meeting place and playground. The Lions would welcome any suggestions for improvement.

The Lions cannot function unless they enjoy a vibrant executive and robust membership. As with most community based organizations – with the exception of the Maiden Gully Progress Association – maintaining active membership is on ongoing chore. There is no limit on becoming a member. What is required is an interest in your local community and an investment of your time in service towards worthy and ongoing projects. Contact: John Smith 54496239.

Movie in the Park Evening

The City of Greater Bendigo once again held a Movie Night at the Maiden Gully Recreation Reserve on Saturday 23rd of February 2013 as part of their Summer in the Parks program. This year, the feature film was "Rise of the Guardians".

An enthusiastic crowd of over 800 people enjoyed the open air movie experience, made all the more pleasant by the fact that the temperature hovered around 25 degrees throughout the evening.

The Maiden Gully Progress Association was proud to support this event, and would like to thank all those who attended and in turn supported us by purchasing some of the popcorn, ice creams and drinks that were on sale.

We are working with the City of Greater Bendigo to include Maiden Gully as a venue for next year's Summer in the Parks program and look forward to bringing another great family movie to Maiden Gully for your entertainment.

Common Ground Church Update

Since it’s inception in June 2011 members of Common Ground have involved themselves in the community by doing a weekly Mainly Music programme for mums with toddlers; Holiday Kidz Club for Grades 2 to 6 children, and Christian Religious Education (CRE) at the Maiden Gully Primary School.

Sunday services were initially held in the Maiden Gully Primary School Activities Centre, but at the beginning of 2013 relocated to the Maiden Gully Community Hall. A bigger area was required to seat growing numbers attending services.

Common Ground is an outreach initiative by the Anglican Diocese of Bendigo with Rev. Roger Rich appointed as its missioner to the local area. He is assisted by Brendan McDonald, also licensed to minister at Common Ground.

While establishing its identity as a Bendigo church, Common Ground espouses a set of values which include worshipping God in Spirit and truth; being Biblically based; bringing God’s healing love to the wounded in spirit; nurturing children, and extending a warmth of friendship to all who come.

Sunday services are held in the Maiden Gully Community Hall at 10 am. It’s a, ‘Come as you are,’ welcome for anybody wanting to find out more about Christianity or making a fresh start. For further information please ring or check out any of the following contacts:

Common Ground Church Holiday 'Movie Madness' Kidz Club

The first term holiday program culminated in a red carpet evening for young people attending the Holiday Kidz Club. The theme ‘Movie Madness’ was aimed at getting the creative juices flowing with the children writing scripts based on the parables of Jesus, and then building props and acting out the stories.

Richard Tatti, a professional video producer spent hours editing the short films for the Friday nights showcase event. The young stars, in evening dress and bow ties, were photographed as they walked the ‘red carpet’, and later received awards for best actor, best film and best set. It was not only a learning experience for the young people, but a means of building their self- esteem.

A great team contributed to the success of the Holiday Club. A special thanks to Stuart Conkie (OAC Ministries), Margaret Butcher, Christine Higham, Brendan and Virginia McDonald, Roger and Regina Rich, Carol Davis, Fiona Phelan, Richard and Glenis Tatti and Melinda Tatti.

Edited versions of the short films will be uploaded to commongroundlife.com website for parents to see again.

Clean Up Maiden Gully Day

The Maiden Gully Progress Association joined forces with the Maiden Gully Marong Lions Club on Sunday 3rd of March 2013 to collect rubbish along the Calder Highway as part of the Keep Australia Beautiful Adopt a Roadside Program. A small number of volunteers attended, and we were able to clear rubbish from the intersection of Edwards Road and the Calder Highway, right through to the railway line at Marong.

Two full ute loads, 1.5 tonnes, of rubbish was collected on the day, which was a fantastic effort and we would like to thank the volunteers who assisted us on the day.

Unfortunately, the exercise also highlighted to the volunteers a disturbing problem - the fact that some people think it is OK to throw rubbish out the window as they drive along through our beautiful countryside.

It is actually an offence to throw litter from a motor vehicle. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria has a public litter reporting service which enables members of the public to report people who throw litter from a Victorian- registered motor vehicle. As a result of this service, more than 20,000 people are reported to EPA every year.

The 24 hour hotline number is 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC), or if you visit the EPA website at www.epa.vic.gov.au, you can download an app to be able to report an offender while you are travelling.

The Maiden Gully Progress Association will conduct another clean up along the Calder Highway in late July / August, focusing on the area from Edwards Road through to Specimen Hill Road. The date will be published in our next newsletter. We encourage residents to get involved and to show the public by example that we will not tolerate litter on our roadways.

Maiden Gully Precinct Structure Plan Update

The Maiden Gully Precinct Structure Plan project continues to progress.

The Project Manager, Steve Abbott from the City of Greater Bendigo's Strategy Unit, presented the Vision and Conceptual Structure Plan at a Community Workshop at the Maiden Gully Community Hall on Monday 26 March 2013.

The Project is now moving to Stage 5 and a Draft Precinct Structure Plan is now available. Copies of the Draft Plan can be obtained from the City of Greater Bendigo offices in Lyttleton Terrace, Bendigo, or by visiting the City of Greater Bendigo website at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au.

It is important to note that Stage 5 is a key stage for Community Consultation. Over the next six weeks, there will be several opportunities for residents and other stakeholders to discuss the Draft Plan, with a two day Listening Post planned for the Maiden Gully Community Hall on a Friday and Saturday in late May/early June. Steve Abbott will also be attending the next Public Meeting of the Maiden Gully Progress Association on Monday 3rd of June 2013, where the Draft Plan will be one of the topics discussed. Keep an eye out for the next Community Bulletin, on the City of Greater Bendigo website and in local papers for details of opportunities to discuss the Draft Plan.

As we have seen already with the Project, the views of Maiden Gully residents will be listened to and amendments made to the Plan where good ideas are presented.

Should you require any additional information on this project, please refer to our website, attend our next Public Meeting on Monday 3rd of June 2013 or contact Steven Abbott, Project Manager on 5434 6287 or [email protected].
