TAHRIR SQUARE REBIRTH Jan 2011 Ain shams - Urban design and planning I Egypt

(Design - Modeling - Presentation)(2D/3D AutoCad - Sketchup - 3Ds Max - Photoshop)

Located in El Tahrer square, Downtown Cairo, with a working Area of 310,000 m2, the aim of this project was to survey, study and analyze the existing situation, then to design and develop the urban fabric of the space.

The main idea of the design was to pedestrianize the space by diverting through traffic and planning lots of open spaces connecting the main assets of the area.

Page 31: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio
Page 32: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio

The vision of having a distinct destination with a unique experience of activity, culture, history and tourism, the development strategy hinges on three main axis, having a Monumental space, Pedestrian routes and Nile waterfront; achieved through the re-routing the through-traffic and creating a vehicular free oriented monumental urban space.

The design focus on the huge public plaza in front of the Egyptian museum, having a massive underground parking that is connected to the existing metro line as well, and using the plaza for hosting open exhibitions, public events and gathering space.

HORTUS CONCLUSUS May 2016 - April 2017 Politecnico di Milano I Italy

(Design (Team) - Modeling - Presentation)(2D AutoCad - Sefira - Rhino - Grasshopper - 3Ds Max - Photoshop)

Hortus Conclusus is a Master thesis based on scientific research and investigations in the field of Architecture and Building engineering. Focusing on the issue of food insecurity and the role of architecture in finding a sustainable solution through redefining the concept of our living spaces and introducing new means of food production that suits the present urban lifestyle. This thesis gathers methods and strategies that we have developed as independent researchers, designers and scholars some of which are not yet tested and are subject to further development.

Having a long term goal to modify the habits of the city inhabitants towards viable nutrition, the aim is to reconnect the culture dating from historical archetype, “Hortus Conclusus” with our present busy urban life, establishing the future model of “CIVITATIS HORTI” that would set a new understanding of our overall lifestyle modification, towards the future of urban agriculture lifestyle, by aggregating, at the first glance the two incompatible processes of present urban residential use and urban agriculture.

The moment of seeding presents the very beginning of this process and it all starts with a single seed, placed in the right position at the right time, and after it’s being maintained properly, the plant will grow and provide food. In the same way, we are observing this architecture as a inception, as a seed that will set the way how we will grow our food in the future, spreading as the tree drops it seeds through fruits around it and so on, as a ripple effect.

Establishing the analogy between the seed, as the main element of this process, and our design, the form of the seed has been used as a main design input. Dismantled into two main components, the shell and the seed core. Analogically, the shell became the building skin and envelope protecting what’s inside, while the internal part of the seed is what is the most valuable for us, the actual core of life process and a home for students and plants.

Page 45: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio

This thesis are proposing a new design methodology based on the concepts and principles if Hortus conclusus resulting in the development of a new architectural typology for urban architectural use, as a fusion between typical residential use and urban farming addressed as “Agritecture”.

the sense of community is coming up from the interaction of the individuals through different activities and socialization levels, it is happening in common spaces or any type of shared space. In this case, the building layout will be developed in a way that it will contain numerous common spaces like study rooms, lounge, kitchens etc. But in this case the accent will be placed on farming spaces, introducing them as a common space typology, furthermore, different levels of interactions between students within a community is influenced by a building layout.

Page 46: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio

Studies on the analogy and interpretation of the seed crust into a building façade took place in order to optimize this architectural element, with particular attention to some of the environmental and sustainability aspects.

The microfarming system is a clear interpretation of the design methodology Agritecture, where farming food and urban living are no longer considered two different functions but one.

Having the skin of the building itself acting as the farming ground not only saves space and energy, but much more than that, It incepts the idea that we should be responsible for growing our own food in the city.

Composed by having Solar Photovoltaic panels (as Opaque panels) that harness and store electricity from the sun radiation, using storage batteries which are already available in the market today, later to be used to feed excessive thermal and light requirements to growing the plants during cold nights, or absence of sun .

The second design aspect is the Micro farming cells, implementing the technology of hydroponic farming techniques, creating a prefabricated closed-loop network for water collection and nutrition of plant cultures. The system would have a much higher production and yielding rate than traditional farming, as well as fresh consumption of crops.

CORSICO MEDIATECA Feb - April 2016 Politecnico di Milano I Italy

(Design (Team) - Modeling - Presentation)(2D AutoCad - Sefira - Sketchup - Grasshopper - 3Ds Max - Photoshop)

Ex Stella Corsico” area, Corsico, MilanLocated in the municipality of Corsico in Milan, it consists of a former industrial field, today completely dismissed and partially occupied by public parking.

The aim of the project is to re-develop and refurbish the area by designing a new sustainable multi-use social commercial building that would serve the surrounding neighborhoods.

Existing in a very strategic location, 7 km away from the center of Milano, along the Naviglio Grande just above the center of Corsico; The program of the project was determined by an integrated approach of studying the needs or Corsico and the surrounding neighborhoods of the site, deducing that the most suitable function that would serve the area is to have a Social Multimedia Center acting as a landmark and symbol to Corsico.

Exploring deep into the concept of the Library, as a space dedicated for sharing knowledge, studying the methods used for knowledge sharing over time. Defining also the principles of communities in term of social communication, focusing on the visual, audio and touch communication methods.

As a result, the program emphasizes and encourage the use of interactive architecture, with a more digital approach that relay completely on the communication between the user and the building. Thus, the design concept is based on allowing maximum interaction and experience to users, acting as a social center but also while sharing knowledge in a modern way.

Page 56: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio
Page 57: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio
Page 58: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio

The design adopts an open-plan strategy for maximizing and allowing visual continuity, with the presence of one main vertical core that centers the horizontal circulation. All functions that require natural diffused day lighting are placed facing north, while the exhibition halls and cinemas are facing south

Daylight analysis is based on:- South façade completly opaque.- East and North façade partially glazed without shading devices.- West façade partially glazed in a terrace.- Ground floor’s wing south façade glazed without shading devices.

Page 59: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio
Page 60: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio
Page 61: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio
Page 62: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio

The concept of the design is having a huge solid floating mass from the front (south facade) that attracts the attention and curiosity to what’s happening inside the building, while getting across to the other side (north facade), you then get a striking visual connection with the complete transparency through the curtain wall.

Emphasizing the idea of visual communication and interactive relation between the building and the user, the arrangement of the panels represents a sound wave that changes the amplitude and intensity according to the usage of the space adjacent to it, through the use of different extrusion and intrusion depth, the facade becomes dynamic with shadow.

Searching for the most suitable finishing material of the main mass; Combining Lightness, Flexibility, durability and dynamics, The optimum solution is to have an opaque / semi-opaque facade composed of standralized GFRC panels.

Located in the heart of Milan, with a very rich and lively neighborhood, the design approach for having an integrated project must emerge from its context, in this case, the focus was on finding the catalyst that would be the basis for the design. Using the Integrated Modification Methodology, Both the horizontal and vertical Investigations were carried on the project site.

Page 76: Mahmoud Abdelwahab l Architecture portfolio

The result lead to the design concept using the Parco della basiliche as the main catalyst for the design, focusing on the people experience and journey in the surrounding context, acting as a gateway to the park from the city, and hence an extension to both sides.

Active and passive stratgies have also been implemented in the design with the aim of having a low energy consumption building, taking into account the stingr northern wind, year round sun radiation ratio, and the natural daylight requirments for the exhibition and educational spaces, as well as the indoor thermal comfort for the users.

The main integrative feature would be the Green roof which extends the park into the project, and provide a view point of the whole area.

Stretching the park into the project:- Integration of the park / open spaces-Attracting park visitors to the museum-Maximizing the visual connectivity to the park.
