World Trade Center

The official opening of the twin towers took place on April 4, 1973.

The North Tower was the world's tallest building. Its total height was 526 meters, 84 meters higher than the south tower.

Looking at only the height up to the roofs, the north and south towers were 36 and 34 feet higher than the Empire State Building.

Around the Twin Towers, there were four other smaller buildings. Even though their size was not even close to the giant towers, the other buildings still got some damages when the attack took place.

On September 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks targeting civillians, but mostly military buildings in the U.S.A, took place.

Four American passenger planes were hijacked, of which two of the aircraft were used to attack the civilian building World Trade Center`s twin towers in Manhattan, New York.

The total death number are still unclear, but it went down to about 2,700-3,000 people.

The yellow cabs

The yellow cabs are everywhere in New York. They are very easy to find and you just beckon and they come.

Yellow cabs are ordinary taxis and are one of New York's signs. If you go to New York you will not have a problem to find a yellow cab. Because there are over 13,000 yellow cabs in New York. The company itself that is the owner of all the yellow cabs is TLC. They started in 1971. They also own limousines.

Crime and security During a time there was a lot of crimes in New York. They tricked the people by making them think they were stepping into a taxi, but when the people stepped in they were either robbed or defiled or they experienced something other that was equally horrifying.

In 1967 all New Yorks taxicabs were ordered to be painted yellow to identify all the official taxi cars. Now it is very safe to go with a yellow cab. They have video surveillance systems in all yellow cabs. So if anything happens it is easy to find out what happened.

TLC mission is to make sure that everyone can get a taxi without any problems.

To get a taxi easy you just need to go out to the sidewalk and beckon to a taxi.

So if you go to New York you know a little about the Yellow cabs.

Broadway Theater!Broadway is one of Manhattan`s biggest streets right in the middle of New York. Broadway runs through many famous places for example Time Square. The Broadway street also runs through a big theater district that since 1850 has been the place for most of all theater buildings in the state. That`s why Broadway has become a synonyme for New York`s theater scene.

Broadway`s theater is a very famous place where all the actors want to be. It is the site of the nation`s largest theaters and musicals and the center of all development of theater.Together with London`s West End are Broadway theaterrs the best English-language theaters in the world.

\You have not been in New York if you haven´t seen at least one of Broadways musicals. The biggest shows play on some of the 38 big theaters just next to Time Square. There are also around 250 smaller theaters where not so famous actors play the not so famous plays. As long as you`re not interested in the best seats you have a big chance getting a ticket.

Hear are some musicals you can see: the very famous Mamma Mia, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, Anything

Goes, Rock Of Ages, Mary Poppins, Chicago, Jersey Boys. That are only a few of them. You can also see the big classics: Phanem, Peter Pan , The Best Man.

Shopping / Fashion weekThe models getting thinner and thinner and the clothes getting newer and newer. All this just for the camera and to inspire the people. They get disorders like anorexia just to look nice.

During spring and autumn in New York it is a fashion week. In the weeks you can see models who show their clothes on the catwalk. You can also meet and talk to the famous designers who made all the model clothes. They show up their clothes because it is the collection for autumn or spring. Sometimes when the models walk on the catwalk they fail totally. It can be very embarrassing for all the famous designers and of course it gets very embarrassing for the models. The models who take a lot of pictures every day are often very thin and often have an disorder like anorexia.

Famous persons often use famous brands to look cool and show that they are rich. When you have so much money you don't have to buy ordinary clothes you can waste your money on famous brands and luxury houses and so on. We can say that they live our dreams, but when a famous person wants to go out he/she needs bodyguards to protect

him/her from crazy fans, and that can be annoying.

Madison Square Garden

Madison Sqaure Garden is a large arena, where hockey games are played and where the biggest artists are performing. The most famous artists that have played at Madison Square Garden are Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson, Queen, Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and Lady Gaga. It's the most famous arena in the world. It opened in 1968.

The arena was named after USA´s fourth president James Madison. There were already three arenas that had the same name as Madison Square Garden.

The arena is also used for filming in big movies, like Star Wars 2. There are about 320 events per year.

For three years they renovated the building, The cost ended up being 775 million dollars.

At basketball games there are at least 20,000 people watching.

Often it is the artist´s dream to play at the Madison Square Garden.

Madison Square Garden is located in the heart of midtown Manhattan, at the seventh avenue.

At most events alcohol is allowed, but there's no smoking allowed.The kids who just turned two can have a ticket, into Madison Square Garden.

Only the employees can use the elevator.

Take a stroll at the zoo

In Central Park, there is a Zoo for everyone who wants to see penguins, icebears, colorful birds, monkeys and more. The Zoo is open for everyone the whole year!

In the middle of New York, there is a Zoo. You can go to the Zoo if you want to discover the wildlife. Be one of the 1 milion people who come to the Zoo every day and search for the animals you're looking for. In the Zoo you'll find the warm rainforest and the icecold Antarctis winter. You can find penguins, birds, monkeys, sealions and so much more. But you can also find endangered animals like red pandas and tamarin monkeys. The Zoo is very active to keep such animals. Very sadly, but there are no animals like lions, zebras or giraffes from the movie ”Madagascar” . But like I said, the pengiuns live in our Zoo.

Visit the Zoo in the month of December

If you visit the Zoo in the month December you will see the Zoo covered in lights. Some days it is opened a little longer, and if you would be frozen you can always go in to the Tropic Zone. It's like a tropic little world in the Zoo. In there it is 26 degrees the whole year!

Central Park is not only a Zoo!

It's accually a lot more than that. Central Park is a very popular place for tourists, but

also people who live there like it. There are a lot of things to do, you can climb, watch birds, go to the Boathouse Cafe, ride a bike, ice skate and more. If you want to ice skate, you have two choices, Wollman Rink and Lasker Rink. In summer time Laser Rink is a pool, so that people can swim there.

So if you want to discover animal life or just want to relax, you should go to Central Park.

Statue of Liberty

If you are in New York city you have to visit the Statue of Liberty. The statue is one of the most famous things in the world, but probably you already know that.

The statue was opened in 1886 Statue of Liberty was opened on October 28 1886 and it was a gift from the French people, as a symbol for the one hundred years memory of USA independence. USA made the basis and France made the statue.

At first USA didn´t want the gift, but it was received reluctantly after they had been forced. Through the years the statue has symbolized democracy and freedom.

Eiffel tower and Statue of Liberty was shaped by the same man The statue was sculpted by Frederic Bartholdi and it was made of copper plates over an iron frame. The frame was shaped by Gustave Eiffel, the same man how shaped the Eiffel Tower. The basis was designed by the American man Richard Morris Hunt.

The statue is built in both countriesStatue of Liberty was first built in France, after that it was mounted on the bottom to 350 different parts and it was transported to Liberty Island. On Liberty Island the statue was mounted again.

Statue of Liberty comes from the Roman mythology The statue pictures a woman after the goddess Libertas from the Roman mythology. The woman have a radiant crown, and she wears a long dress. Statue of Liberty is standing on chains that symbolize slavery times. Her right hand holds a torch and her left hand holds a plate with the scripture “July IV MDCCLXXVI” ( July 4

1776), the day then USA became independence from Great Britain.

The statue is 93 meters tall, the goddess is 46 meters tall and the basis is 47 meters. It´s weighting 225 tonnes.1884 – 1886 statue of Liberty was renovated and the torch was switched out, the original one can be found at a museum.

How do you go to the Statue and Liberty Island?If you want to visit Liberty Island and see New York from a different view, you take the ferry to the island and then you either walk 397 steps and see New York from the crown or take the elevator, but it just goes up to the basis.

New York Fashion Week, is one of the major Fashion Shows in the world, and it has become one on the biggest events in New York. Here you can learn some facts about the show.

The show used to take place in Bryant Park, but since 2010 they moved the show to the Lincoln Center Venue.

It takes place twice a year, one of them is in February where designers show their autumn collections, and the other show is in September when it is about the spring collections. New York begin the fashion season and after that the other shows, in Milan, Paris and London follow.

Over 70 designers show off their collections for upcoming seasons, for example Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, and Alexandra Wang.

There are also lots of parties and celebrations during New York Fashion Week. And many celebs come to their favorite designers´s shows and you can spot them by the catwalk if you happen to be there.

Chrysler Building

The Chrysler building is one of the tallest buildings in New York.

The Chrysler Building is an office tower in New York, Manhattan in the Turtle Bay area at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexinton Avenue with 77 floors and it´s 319 meters high.

The building is the fifth highest in the United States. Chrysler Building was competing with another building, Bank of Manhattan Company Building, to become the tallest building in 1930. Secretly a spire was bulid on the building's top, to be sure to be the tallest building in USA. Chrysler Building was designed by William Van Alen, and built on behalf of Chrysler Corporation, and was later used as headquarters´s building by Chrysler, a big car company in USA.

In total, almost 400,000 rivets were used and 3,826,000 bricks were manually laid to create the walls of the skyscraper. There are 3862 windows on the fasade of the Chrysler Building.

Fun Factsthe tower has been in and on a lot of movies, like Spiderman and The Lightling Thieves.

The lightling has two sets of lights in the top spires and decoration. This lightling was installed by electrician Charles Londner and crew during construction.

The yellow taxi cabs

On the streets of New York most of the cars are yellow taxi cabs. Whenever, wherever you want to go the taxi cabs can take you there for a buck.

The Electric EraThe yellow taxi cabs are famous all over the world but specially from the red carpet. The yellow taxi cabs are almost in every movie that are recorded in New York. The first yellow taxi cab wasn't yellow, it wasn't even a car, it was an electric hansom cab (horse and carriage.) It was invented in July 1897 and the company ran until 1898 with up to 62 cabs operating until it was reformed by it's financiers from the Electric Vehicle Company.

One year later the company built the electrobat, the new electric car had up to 100 taxi cabs running in 1899. From that year they started building nearly everything electric.

There areover 12,000 yellow cabs in New York It is not possible to order a taxi, you must wave one in to the roadside. You can go wherever you want in New York and you only pay by mile.

If you are a tourist and is going to take a taxi to the hotel you often get a price of what you are going to pay before you go. So be careful

when you talk about the payment so you won't be scammed.

New York's taxi system is completely different from the system the rest of the world uses. It's a lot simpler to get at taxi, cheaper and you get there faster. As you might have seen in all the movies, people who take a taxi always sit in the back seat. It's like a law in New York that you sit in the back seat. We think it's because of all the robberies that happens when people sit in the front seat.

EMPIRE STATE BUILDING

If you are going to New York, the Empire State Building on the fifth avenue is something you would not want to miss. The Empire State Building is the tallest building in Manhattan and it lies 443 meter above sea level. The Empire State Building is kind of a trademark for New York or perhaps the enitre country. In a single year over 3 million people visit the Empire State Building from all over the world and it costs about 14 dollars per person so they make quite the money out of it.

History

The Empire atate Building was constructed by Gregory Johnson and his architecture buddies from Chicago. It took them about 2 weeks to get all the drawings, and they started building it in 1929. It didn't take them too long to finish it, only about 2 years. The building was a part of an intense competition for the title as the ''worlds tallest building''The Empire Atate Building cost approximately $24,718,000 to build but the price nearly doubled because of the the property which it sits on.

On May 1th the Empire State Building was opened by president Herbert Hoover. Many of the offices in the Empire State Building stood empty all the way through the 1930's because the upper half of the offices weren't finished yet. And because of this many New Yorkers started calling it '' the Empty state building ''.

Things you probably didn't know

The Empire State Building is not just a large building but it's also a night time attraction on certain holidays and special events. For example on St.Patrick's day, the top 30 floors of the building including the giant like antenna, starts to glow with a pitch bright green color. It glows pink and white to support the breast cancer campaign and red,

white and green for Christmas and so on.

The building is also a popular place to film movies on. Famous movies that you'd might know of such as King Kong , The Lightning Thief, Independence Day, and many other movies were filmed there.

When you think about tragical events in New York, you all probably think of ''9/11'', but the Empire State Building has also been through some rough times.

On July 28, 1945 a very unfortunate thing happened to the Empire State Building. A small plane crashed into the 79th floor on the west side of the building. The plane was piloted by Lituanent William Smith who flew very low in thick fog and accidentally crashed and killed 14 people in this bizarre event.

So is the Empire State Building is worth a visit with all the pretty lights, the magnificent view, and much more. It's up to you to find out. So don't forget to make a stop by the Empire state building the next time you visit New York!

9/11 attacks

It started like an ordinary day, ended in disaster.

The 9/11 attacks were a series of 4 attacks in the U.S. On September 11th a group of terrorists from the group al-Qaeda hijacked 4 passenger airplanes.

They on purpose crashed 2 planes into the World Trade Center, also called Twin Towers in New York city. Both towers fell within 2 hours. The hijackers also crashed one plane into the Pentagon in Virginia. The last plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

The passengers tried to take control of the plane but it crashed before they managed to get control of it. About 3000 people died in the attacks. Many people took their own lives by jumping from the towers.

They quickly suspected al-Qaeda. U.S responded by invading Afghanistan to stop the Talibans who had helped al-Qaeda. The attack is the biggest terrorist attack in the world history.

The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty was originally made in France and was designed by Frédéric Bartholdi.

The Statue of Liberty represents Libertas the Roman godess of freedom. She bears a torch and a tablet, there also lies a broken chain at her feet.

The Statue of Liberty is located in New York at Liberty Island. The Statue is 46 meters high and weighs about 204 metric tonnes. The Statue of Liberty was constructed in Paris, France. It took nine years before it was completed in 1884 after which it was sent to the USA in 214 crates.

The biggest and most embarrassing problem was the construction of the pedestal, because it had to to be paid for by the Americans themselves.

The statue's torch was displayed in Madison Square park for six years, from 1876 until 1882, in an attempt to wake interest and attract funds. But it was only after publisher

Joseph Pulitzer published the names of those who donated money for the project that the funds started flowing in. Eventually, the statue was erected 10 years later, in 1886, when it was officially inaugurated by president Grover Cleveland.

Gustave Eiffel was responsible for the steel framework, Gustave Eiffel is known as the man who built the great Eiffel Tower.

The sheathing of the great Statue of Liberty is made from copper.

One thing that makes the Statue so famous is that it's hollow and people can travel within it with an elevator.

The French people were so proud of it they even built a lesser version of it for themselves.

Times Square!

Times Square is a major street in New York.

Times Square was named by the magazine ”New York Times” which had there headquarters there. But before it was called ”Longacre Square” but changed name in1904.

One of the things that Times Square is famouse for is its New Years Eve celebration. Times Square is the site of the annual New Year's Eve balldrop.

On December 31, 1907, a ball signifying New Year's Day was first dropped at Times Square. On that night hundreds of the thousands of people congregated to watch the Waterford Crystal ball being dropped on a pole at the top of the building, marking the start of the new year.

During World War 2, a minute of silence followed by a recording of church bells pealing, replaced the ball drop beacuse of wartime blackout restrictions.

Today, countdown Entertainment and One Time Square handle the New Years Eve event in conjunction with the Times Square Alliance.

Central Park

The park lies in the middle of New York around all the skyscrapers and tower blocks. It is called ”The lung of New York”. I think it´s a pretty amazing thing, this big oasis in the middle of one of the worlds´s biggest business cities.

The park opened in 1876 when Law Olmstead and Calwert Waux won 15 million dollars in a design competition.

Central park is the biggest and the most famous park in the world. It is also the first public park built in America, and one of the most frequently visited, with over 25 million guests per year. The park is 4 kilmometers long and 340 hektars big.

The park is a perfect place for all different types of people. When you are walking in the park you will see green pastures, small forest areas, lakes and Zoos. You can play 28 different sports and enjoy 58 attractions. You can play handball, go horseback riding, play volleyball, go fishing and visit the kids zoo. There are also 21 offical playgrounds. There is the Shakespeare´s garden and many statues like for example Alice in Wonderland.There is the Central Park marathon. You can exercise in many different loops and in many different natures, while running in the park.

You can go there when you want to have a break from your business life. It´s the perfect place to go clearing your mind.You can also have a perfect date, classtrip or a vacation in the park.

More than 200 movies have been recorded in the park, some of them you have probably heard about are : The movie ”Night at the museum” is recorded in an American museum of natural History right beside the park.

Times Square

Times Square in New York is the world´s most visited tourist attraction and it´s bringing in over 39 million visitors annually.It´s on Manhattan and between 42nd and west 47nd streets, at the junction of Broadway and seventh Avenue.The name Times Square is from the newspaper The New York Times.New years Eve is really big in Times Square.

History

In 1904 New York Times publisher Adolf S. Ochs moved the newspaper´s operations to a new skyscraper on the 45nd street at Longacre Square.

In Times Square there are many neon and LED signs.

New Years Eve is very big in Times Square. Lots of people are there watching the light ball counting down before the New Year. A lot of people are there celebrating

Broadway

Broadway is the world´s biggest theater district. It is located in Manhattan, New York. The Theater got it's name from the street which it's on.

All the way back since the 1850's there has been many different types of plays and sketches on the Broadway theaters. There are 39 different theaters along the street which are constantly showing off performances and musicals for all the people to see. Some of the most famous musicals which has been performed there are “The Sound of Music”, “Phantom of the Opera” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”.

The Broadway theaters get visitors from all over the world but mostly tourists and other people from the United States who happened to be in New York. Back in the old days when the theaters were first introduced on Broadway it was mostly the local people who came there to watch, but now since the local population has decreased they have increased the ticket price.

In the beginning of the 1900th century the people how worked on Broadway started a system so that everyone should know the difference between the big and the small

theaters.

The biggest scenes are called ''Broadway'' and you can fit between 1000-2000 people there. The middle big scenes are named off-Broadway and the smallest are called off-off-Broadway. In the off-off-Broadway scenes you can fit 200 less people than off-Broadway and on Broadway.Of course all the biggest and most famous musical shows on Broadway are not off-Broadway.

The Broadway theater district is the most popular tourist attraction in New York and sold 10 digits in 2010.

Statue of Liberty

You know that big statue that everyone talks about in New York? Here are some facts that you may not know before you have read this!

Statue of Liberty or Liberty Enlightening the World if we shoud be exact is a big statue outside New York´s port on a little island.If you want to visit the Statue you need to take a ferry to the Statue.

Gift from FranceIt has been there in 126 years, and it was a gift from France. It´s a symbol to celebrate the American independence from France. The statue looks like a woman and she is a symbol for freedom and democracy. In her right hand she has a torch, on the torch is written July XIV MDCCLXXVI. That means 14 July 1776. It´s the day when USA became one country and the UK didn´t own USA anymore.

Build the Statue It took 4 months to build up the statue. It came in 350 pieces, in 214 boxes. In the woman´s hair she has a tiara. There are windows in the tiara, so the people can look

out and enjoy the views. The Statue is about 93 meters and weighs about 225 tonnes! In the years 1984-1986 the statue was repaired, and the torsch became a new torch.

Funny FactsAnd did you know that the statue has exactlly 397 steps? So the Effiel Tower has many more steps than Statue of Liberty. What about if you should go all the way up? Wonder how long time it would take? The Statue has one elevetor, but it just go when somthing has happend. So you need to go all the way up, only your legs can help you up. The statue has a lot of tourists every year so it is very popular. It´s the third most poular thing in New York.

More Statues There are three more statues that look like Statue of Liberty in the world, but they are smaller. One in France, one in Tokyo and one in Las Vegas. So it´s just 4 Statues of Liberties in the world, but this one outside New York´s port is the most famous one.

New York Rangers magic season 2011-2012

The New York Rangers is on the road to win the eastern conference in the National Hockey League.They have the lead in the whole leage with 67 points after 45 games played.

The Rangers is one of the oldest teams in NHL, having joined in 1926.

They are part of the group of teams referred to as the original six,along with the Detroit Red Wings,Toronto Maple Leafs,Montreal Canadians, Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks.

The have won four Stanley Cups, the latest was 1993-1994 (and maybe again 2011-2012.)

New York Rangers are the team in the NHL with most Swedish players in the whole history.The Swedish players are Ulf Sterner, Anders Hedberg,Tomas Sandström, Ulf Samuelsson, Ulf Dahlen, Markus Näslund and Michael Nylander. But Anton Strålman,Tim Erixon,Carl Hagelin and Henrik Lundqvist are playing in Rangers right now,and Carl Hagelin and Henrik Lundqvist are coming to play the NHL All Star game next week in Ottawa.

Rangers is a club with much respect and they have had many superstars like Jaromir Jagr ,Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky and the three biggest stars they have right now are Brad Richards,Marian Gaborik and

Henrik Lundqvist(King of NY).
