The monster vehicle, 54 ft, 7 tons, is being prepared for Mach 1.1 in the Nevada Desert later this year. The car needs only to carry sufficient fuel for one run, and must be refuelled each time with a minimum of four runs needed. Double diaphragm pumps aid increased paint production In the manufacture of paints there are high volumes of fluids to be moved around the factory, from mixing areas to packaging areas. Safe, secure transfer, with no leakage and the minimum of downtime for maintenance are the prime considerations for a pump in this application. Norver Paints of Heckmond- wike, UK, who manufacture dec- orative finishes for the retail market, wished to improve the efficiency of their pumping operations. A Verder Big air operated double diaphragm was chosen as a possible improvement, and given a twelve month trial. The 3 inch MOB version was used, being a pump designed for transporting fluids, such as the water based paints in this ap- plication, in high volumes. Op- erators found the pump easy to use, with dry running ability and stall on closed discharge valve facilities. [] Corrosion resistant pumps upgrade process plant BTR Fluoroline has supplied John Brown Engineers and Con- structors Limited, UK, with Ar- dua corrosion-resistant pumps for use at SmithKline Beecham's Worthing chemical plant. John Brown was responsible for the design, procurement and construction management of a project to upgrade the facilities of a chemical plant on this site, to allow the small scale, fully contained production of highly active pharmaceuticals. Three Ardua pumps have been supplied for general pur- pose use with a wide range of process chemicals. They are lined with the fluoropolymer PFA, injection-moulded on to the pump head components to produce continuous seam-free, corrosion-proof layers, between four and six mm thick. The linings are close-coupled and use Crane seals and sealant systems. The seals run on spe- cially designed Hastelloy C im- peller shaft sleeves, with PFA encapsulated Hastelloy C im- peller blades. The pumps are part of BTR Fluoroline's standard F range of horizontal centrifugal pumps, made from iron and steel com- ponents and designed specifi- cally for reliable, long-lasting duty with any aggressive fluid or combination of fluids up to 150°C. Ardua pumps can deal with slurries of up to 25% solids and operate within the perfor- mance range of 1000 gpm at 225 ft head.
