Mag-drive pumps prepared for land speed record attempt
Tot ton Pumps has suppl ied six 24 volt magnet ic drive p u m p s capable of t ransfer r ing 40 lpm of aviat ion fuel to feed the je t powered l and speed record con- t ende r Thrus t SSC.
The mons te r vehicle, 54 ft, 7 tons, is being prepared for Mach 1.1 in the Nevada Desert la ter this year. The car needs only to carry sufficient fuel for one run, and mus t be refuelled each t ime with a m i n i m u m of four runs needed.

Double diaphragm pumps aid increased paint production
In the manufac tu re of pa in t s there are high volumes of fluids to be moved a round the factory, from mixing areas to packaging areas. Safe, secure transfer, with no leakage and the m i n i m u m of downt ime for m a i n t e n a n c e are the pr ime cons idera t ions for a p u m p in this appl icat ion.
Norver Paints of Heckmond- wike, UK, who manufac tu re dec- orative finishes for the retail m a r k e t , w i s h e d to i m p r o v e the efficiency of the i r p u m p i n g operat ions.
A Verder Big air opera ted double d i aphragm was chosen as a possible improvement , and given a twelve m o n t h trial. The 3 inch MOB version was used, be ing a p u m p d e s i g n e d for t r anspor t ing fluids, such as the water based pa in t s in this ap- pl icat ion, in high volumes. Op- erators found the p u m p easy to use, with dry r u n n i n g abil i ty and stall on closed discharge valve facilities. The p u m p gave trou- ble free service with no leaks,
Totton mag-drive pumps will tuel the supersonic record contender, Thrust SSC.
i m p o r t a n t where t r a n s f e r of pa in t and o ther viscous materi- als are concerned. A fur ther two p u m p s are now in use enabl ing Norver P a i n t s to cope wi th increased levels of product ion.

[ ] Corrosion resistant pumps upgrade process plant
BTR Fluoro l ine has supp l i ed John Brown Engineers and Con- s t ructors Limited, UK, with Ar- dua corros ion-res is tant p u m p s for use a t SmithKline Beecham's Worthing chemical plant .
John Brown was responsible for the design, p rocurement and cons t ruc t ion m a n a g e m e n t of a project to upgrade the facilities of a chemical p l an t on this site, to allow the small scale, fully con ta ined produc t ion of highly active pharmaceut ica ls .
Three A r d u a p u m p s have
been suppl ied for general pur- pose use with a wide range of p rocess chemica ls . They are l ined wi th the f luoropolymer PFA, in jec t ion-moulded on to the p u m p head componen t s to produce con t inuous seam-free, corrosion-proof layers, between four and six m m thick. The l inings are close-coupled and use Crane seals and sea lan t systems. The seals r un on spe- cially designed Hastelloy C im- peller shaft sleeves, with PFA encapsu la ted Hastelloy C im- peller blades.
The p u m p s are par t of BTR Fluorol ine 's s t anda rd F range of hor izonta l centr i fugal pumps , made from iron and steel com- ponen t s and designed specifi- cally for reliable, long- las t ing duty with any aggressive fluid or combina t ion of fluids up to 150°C. Ardua p u m p s can deal with slurries of up to 25% solids and operate wi th in the perfor- mance range of 1000 gpm at 225 ft head.
