BIRTHDAY OF CHENNAI

CHENNAI Chennai was formed on August 22, 1639

as a small piece of land with the name ‘Madharasapattinam’.

Its name was changed as Chennai in the year 1996

LOCATION Chennai is located in the northern part

of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the four metropolitan cities

of India. It is the capital city of Tamil Nadu

CLIMATE Chennai has a tropical wet and dry

climate. Chennai is still enjoyable with its other

attractions like the Marina Beach which gives cool breeze.

ECONOMY Chennai has a diversified economy base

anchored by automobile, hardware, software industries, etc.

The Tamil movie industry(Kollywood), the Tamil music industry and Tamil television industry are also significant parts of Chennai’s economy.

DEMOGRAPHICS A resident of Chennai is called a

Chennaiite. Tamil is mainly spoken and English is

widely spoken. Other neighboring languages are also

commonly spoken.

CULTURE Chennai is a major centre for music, art

and dance. Almost all major religious festivals like

Pongal, Deepavali, Eid, Christmas, etc. are celebrated here.

CHENNAI’S CUISINE Chennai is famous for its hot idly/dosai

and sambhar. Food varieties from other parts of Tamil

Nadu as well as International dishes are available in Chennai

SHOPPING AND TRANSPORT Chennai T.Nagar, Pondy bazaar, Anna

salai, Paris market, etc. are the main shopping areas in Chennai.

Chennai has well developed transport infrastructure. The city and its sub-urbs may be traversed using its road and rail network.

MEDIA Chennai has a well established media The major newspapers like ‘The Hindu’,

‘Indian Express’ are published in Chennai.

The major Tamil channels networks are also established in Chennai.

EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE Chennai has many well developed

education centres. IIT, Anna university are prominent among them.

Chennai has well equipped healthcare centres like Apollo hospital, G.H.,etc.

SPORTS Cricket is the most popular sport in

Chennai. The M.A. Chidambaram stadium and the

S.D.A.T. Tennis stadium are popular stadiums.
