Ramblin `Round With Steve

On

Labor Day five member cars traveled to Clatskanie to enjoy the free “Big Band in the Park” concert. Other than the warm weather and high humidity (neither of which was too bad) it was an enjoyable way to spend the sum-mer-like afternoon. The event is sponsored by Larry & Donna Garlock, members of the Clatskanie Cruisers. We thank both of them for their sponsorship and community involvement.

Coming up on Sept. 12, 13 & 14, the N. W. Dodge Brothers Club will be visiting the area. Fifteen cars & about 30 mem-bers are expected. They will be staying at the Chau- taqua Lodge in Long Beach and plan to visit the auto tech class at Warrenton High School, Clatsop Retirement Center and the Tongue Point Job Corps Center. Further plans include a visit to the Knappton Heritage Center, Ilwaco Museum and the Kite Museum. On Friday morning they will have some driving skill contests and will be available for visits by the public, prior to departing at around 11:00 a.m. Club members are encouraged to con-tact Chuck & Sara Meyer to meet the group and even tour with them. Please do.

For anyone who is considering attending the Sea Cruise car show in Crescent City on October 6th

& 7th, please contact me (Steve @ 503 325-1807) to join in the fun and for tour details.

The long awaited club hats will be available in October. They are, of course, maroon and white with white lettering and will sell for $18. each (club cost). We should have a sample available at this months meeting.

Much to our surprise and delight, with much thanks to club members who participated in the “Rod Run to the End of the World”, L.C.C. tied with the Rose City Classics Car Club in the “Club Participation” category. What a nice trophy ! L.C.C. cars at the show numbered eleven, so I feel we were very fortunate in receiving the award.

By Jim Wood

Greetings my 4 wheeled friends. Some of you may remember the Coast Guard guys having a car wash and asking club members if they could show up for a mini car show at the air station. I attended as did several other club members. This whole thing was arranged by

one of our newest club members, Eric Ralls. Eric and Jenny Ralls moved to Astoria about a year ago with their two children and one on the way. So now there is five of them. After meeting Eric at the car wash show, we realized we both grew up in Wyoming about 150 miles apart. Small world. Eric has a '68 Chevelle that he bought as a kid in 1999 in Newcastle Wyoming from a friend. He's not too sure about the car's history before he had it, but somewhere along the way this car came with evidence of a roll bar and a hint of drag racing in it's past. It came to Eric with a 454 inch engine and a 4spd.

The badging on the fenders claimed this hard-top came with a 327. So, with the idea of get-ting this ride back to original, he went to an en-gine builder in Rapid City and ordered a brand new 327 for his Chevelle. Eric has about sev-enteen years in the Coast Guard and has dragged this car everywhere he has been sta-tioned, except for overseas, hoping to one day get it completed. Not a lot of spare time or

money for a military man. The main thing he still needs to address is the interior of the car. The mechanicals and body and paint are all done. This Chevelle is also sporting the pe-riod correct Cragar coke-bottle mags. Very cool. We got to talking about keeping the car with him all these years in the service. He said "yeah, it probably has more miles on a trailer than on the road". He started out with it in Wy-oming, then Kentucky, back to Wyoming, then out to California, then over to Texas, and now Oregon. That's what I call dedication to your project! Well a couple more years in the Coast Guard the Ralls family may get a chance for a more permanent home for their Chevelle. It's awesome to have a military fami-ly in our club. I would like to thank Eric for his service and thank Jenny for her service too, it's not easy being married to the military.

Club Members who need a little Sunshine

FROM THE BACK SEAT “THE GAL’S PAGE”

This story actually begins when Joe got the e-bay printout describ-

ing a "1949 Studebaker Champion" that was For Sale. He wanted to

check it out and that was only possible if we drove to Weimar, Ca.,

where the car resided. The following weekend we were on our way!

Arriving at the destination August 2007, we saw the car. It was

"love at first sight"! Joe drove it and decided he definitely wanted it.

We had to do the paperwork with the exchange of money. Got the

title and we headed to Brownsmead!

Almost 10 miles down the road; the Studebaker heated up pretty

bad and was blowing water everywhere. I suggested taking it back.

Wrong answer! Oh yes, we will keep it! Every 50 miles or so, he

stopped to put water in it. It was hot outside and no air conditioning

in the Studebaker. I was driving our '96 Taurus so did have air condi-

tioning. Of course, I didn't brag about being nice and cool!! Joe was

in love with the Studebaker and it didn't matter what would go

wrong, it was okay!

We stopped in Eugene, Portland, and Longview looking for a water

pump, hoping some place would have one before we got home.

None! We did finally make it home. First thing Monday morning, Joe

called Napa Auto Parts in Astoria. Wa! La! They had the very water

pump that was needed to fix the heating problem right on their

shelf! Installed the water pump and fixed the problem.

The Studebaker was in a lot of shows. Many of them produced

trophies. We were always surprisingly pleased when we did get a

trophy! We did enjoy just being there to hear and share Studebaker

stories with many! Lots of people who stopped by to look over the

Studebaker had special stories to share with us. Either friends or

relatives who had owned Studebakers in the past were topics of

conversations. Theirs was just like ours, except, it was black, or

green, or white, etc. Also, maybe theirs had four doors, no white-

walls, '50, '51, or'52, and on and on. Quite the conversation piece,

for sure!

One time we caravanned with several other Car Club couples who

were going to S. Dakota. When everybody else stopped for gas, we

just stopped and waited with them. Our gas mileage was much

better in our Studebaker than theirs so we didn't need to get fuel.

Our destination was Wild Horse Car Show. We even got a trophy

there, which was quite a pleasant surprise. But happy to get it, of

course!!

We did attend a lot of Car Shows with the Studebaker and received

quite a few trophies!! One that stood out for us was the one at St.

Helens Race Track. After Joe heard about the Studebaker National

Museum, he had wanted to go there. In 2011, we began our Road

Trip, with the museum as our main and ultimate goal in South Bend,

Indiana. We arrived at the Museum and spent two days going

through it. It is the most "Complete" museum I have ever been

through. The beginning wheelbarrow, from the very first car to the

last year they made Studebakers, to military jeeps used in World

War II, the Carriages used by 4 Presidents--- Lincoln, B Harrison,

McKinley, and Grant. The very carriage Lincoln rode in to Ford Thea-

ter the night he was assassinated. A precious collection of wagons,

automobiles, and artifacts spanning 150 years! I was very glad Joe

convinced me we needed to go there!! And, yes, there was even a

blue 1949 Studebaker Champion in the Museum!

It was mainly Studebakers and some very nice ones! We received

two trophies that day, one was for People's Choice and the 1st place

from St Helens Car Club. Joe and our granddaughter, Alyssa, took

Victory laps on the Race Track. Fun for both and with very much

pride!

The last car show the Studebaker was in was at Vernonia in 2013.

Now it has been retired for a few years. It hasn't really been on the

road since Joe's "Celebration of Life". I am finally ready to drive Joe's

"Pride and Joy". It may need some "tender loving care" but whatever

it takes, I will do my best to make it happen!
