Love That Dog

Love That DogBy: Sharon Creech

Pages 22-59Love That Dog: Pages 22-24Remember the wheel barrow poem You read The first weekOf school?

Maybe the wheelbarrow poet Was justMaking a picture with wordsAnd someone elseLike maybe his teacher Typed it up And then people thought It was a poemBecause It looked like one Typed up like that.

January 17th And maybeThats the same thing That happened with Mr. Robert Frost. Maybe he was justMaking pictures with wordsAbout the snowy woodsAnd the pastureAnd his teacherTyped them upAnd they looked like poemsSo people thoughtThey were poems.

Like how you did With the blue-car things And reading-the-small-poems thingsOn the boardTyped up They look like PoemsAnd the other kidsAre looking at themAnd they thinkThey really are Poems And they Are all saying Who wrote that? What does making pictures with words mean?Love That Dog: Pages 25-27We were going for a drive And my father said We wont be gone long You come tooAnd so I went And we drove and droveUntil we stopped at aRed brick buildingWith a signIn blue lettersANIMAL PROTECTION SHELTER

January 24th And inside we walked Down a long cement path Past cages With all kinds of Dogs Big and smallFat and skinny

Some of them hiding in the cornerBut most of them Bark-bark-barking and Jumping up Against the wire cageAs we walked past, as if they were saying Me! Me! Choose me!Im the one!And thats where we saw The yellow dogStanding against the cageWith his paws curledAround the wireAnd his long red tongueHanging outAnd his big black eyesLooking a little sad And his long tail

Wag-wag-waging As if he were saying Me me me! Choose me!

and we did. We chose him!

Love That Dog: Pages 25-27And in the car He put his head Against my chestAnd wrapped his pawsAround my armAs if he were saying Thank you thank you thank you!

And the other dogs In the cages Get killed dead If nobody chooses them. January 24th 1. What techniques did Jack borrow from Robert Frost, Carlos Williams and William Blake?

2. What new information did we learn about Jacks yellow dog?

3. How did you feel when we read other dogs get killed dead if nobody chooses them?

Love That Dog: Pages 28-30YesYou can type upWhat I wrote About my yellow dogBut leave off the part About the other dogs Getting killed deadBecause thats too sad

And dont put my name on itPlease

January 31th And maybe it would look good on yellow paper

And maybe the title should be YOU COME TOO.

February 7th Yes It does look goodOn yellow paperAnd you forgot (again) To leave more spaceBetween the lines Like I did when I wrote itBut, thats okay though! Why do you think Jack doesnt want recognition for his poems? Love That Dog: Pages 31-34I like that poem we read today About street music In the city.

My street is not in the middleOf the citySo it doesnt have that LOUD musicOf horns and trucksCLASHFLASH SCREECH

My street is on the edge Of a cityFebruary 15thAnd it has quiet musicMost of the timeWHISPMEOWSWISH

My street is a THIN one With houses on both sidesAnd my house is The white one With the red door.

There is not too much traffic On my street Not like in the middle of a city

We play in yards and sometimes In the streetBut only if a grown up Or the big kidsAre out there, too, And they will shout CAR! If they see a car Coming down our street.

At both ends of our streetAre yellow signs that say Caution! Children at Play! But sometimes the cars pay No attention And speed downThe road As if they are in a big hurry With many miles to go Before they sleep.

Love That Dog: Pages 38-41YesYou can type up The yellow dog poemThat looks like a dogBut this time Keep the spacesThe sameAnd maybeIt would look Really really goodOn yellow paper

Maybe you could put my name on it But only if you want to. Only if you think it Looks good enough. March 1stI was a little embarrassed When people said Things to me like Neat poem, Jack And Howd you think of that, Jack?

And I really really like The one you put up About the tree That is shaped like a treeNot a fake-looking freeBut a real tree With straggly branches.

But I want to know Who is the Anonymous poet In our class Who wrote that And why didnt He Or She Want to put His or her nameOn it?Was it like me when I didnt think my wordsWere Poems?

Maybe you will tell The anonymous tree poet That his or her tree poem Is really a poem Really really And a good poem, too.

March 7thLove That Dog: Pages 42-45That was the best best BEST poem You read yesterday By Mr. Walter Dean Myersthe best best BEST poem ever.

I am sorry I took the book homewithout asking. I only got one spot on it. Thats why the page is torn.

I tried to get the spot out.

I copied that BEST poem and hung it in my bedroomright over my bed

March 14thwhere I can See it when ImLying down

Maybe you could copy it tooand hang it on the wallIn our class Where we can see it when we are sitting at our desksdoing stuff

I sure loved that poem by Mr. Walter Dean MyersCalled Love That Boy.Because of two reasonsI liked it: One because my dad calls Me in the morning Just like that He calls Hey There Son!

And also because when I had my yellow dogI loved that dog and would call him.

Like this- Id Say Hey There, Sky!(His name why Sky) Love That ______ Dean Walter Myers Inspired PoemOn page 9 of your response books, please construct a Love That ________ poem imitating Dean Walter Myers poem Love that Boy. You need to include at least 2-3 similes in your poem! Love That Football

Love That Dog: By Jack

Love that dog, like a bird loves to fly I said love that dog like a bird loves to fly Love to call him in the morning love to call him Hey there, Sky!Love That Dog: Pages 46-48My Yellow dog followed me everywhereevery which way I turnedhe was there wagging his tailand slobber coming outof his mouthwhen he was smilingat me all the timeas if he was saying thank you thank you thank you for choosing meAnd jumping up on me his shaggy straggly pawson my chestlike he was trying to hug the insides right out of me.

March 22 And when us kidswere playing outsidekicking the ballhed chase after itand push it with his nosepush push pushand getting slobberall over the ballbut no one caredbecause he was such a funny dogthat dog SkyThat straggly furry Smiling Dog Sky. And Id call him Every morning every evening Hey there, Sky! What poem is Jack imitating? What mood is this poem? Why do you think Jack is starting to write about his old pet? Love That Dog: Pages 49-54Yes, you can type up What I wrote about My dog Sky but dont type up that other secret one I wrote-the one all folded upin the envelope with tape on it. That one uses too many of Mr. Walter Dean Myerss words and maybe Mr. Dean Myers would get mad about that. March 27 I was very glad to Hear that Mr. Walter Dean Myers is not the sort of personwho would get madAt a boyFor using some of his words. And thank you for typing up my secret poem the one that usesso many of Mr. Walter Dean Myerswordsand I like what you put at the top: Inspired by Walter Dean MyersApril 4 That sounds goodto my ears. Now no one will think I just copiedbecause I couldnt think of my own words. They will know I was inspired by Mr. Walter Dean Myers.

But dont put it on the board yet, okay?

Is Mr. Walter Dean Myers a live person?

And if he isdo you think he could ever come To our city to our school to our class?

Love That Dog: Pages 49-54And if he did we should hide my poemwith his words-his it real good- just in case he would get madabout that. April 4 (continued) No. No. No. No. No. NO !

I cant do it.

You should do it. Youre a teacher. April 9th I dont agree that Mr. Walter Dean Myers might like to hear from a boy who likes his poems.

I think Mr. Walter Dean Myers would like to hear from a teacherwho uses big wordsand knows how To spellAnd to Type. April 12th Love That Dog: Pages 55-59Dear Mr. Walter Dean Myers, You probably dont want to hear from mebecause I am only a boy and not a teacher and I dont use big wordsand you probably wont even read thisor even if you do read ityou probably are way too busyto answer it Let alone to the thingI am going to ask you and I want you to know thats okayApril 12th Love That Dog: Pages 55-59thats okaybecause our teacher says writers are very very very very busy trying to write their words

and the phone is ringingand the fax is going and the bills need paying and sometimes they get sick (I hope you are not sick, Mr. Walter Dean Myers)or their family gets sickor their electricity goes off or the car needs fixingor they have to go to the grocery storeor do the laundry

April 12th Love That Dog: Pages 55-59Or clean messes. I dont know how you find the timeto write your wordsif you have to do all that stuff and maybe you should get a helper

So, what I am asking you is this:if you ever get the time to leave your houseand if you feel like visiting a schoolwhere there might be some kidswho like your poemswould you ever maybe think about maybe comingApril 12th Love That Dog: Pages 55-59Maybe to our schoolwhich is a clean place with mostly nicepeople in itand I think our teacher Miss. Stretchberry would maybe even make brownies for you because she sometimes makes them for us

I hope I havent too much stopped you from doing your Writing of wordsand fixing your carand getting groceriesApril 12th Love That Dog: Pages 55-59And all that stuff- just to read this letter which probably is taking you maybe fifteen minutesand in time you couldve maybe writtena whole new poem or at least the startof one and so I am sorry

For taking up your time and I understand if you cant come to our clean schooland read some of your poems to usand let us see your face which I bet is a friendly face.
