Over the years, we have been blessed to witness children, families, and communities break through barriers they have faced because of extreme poverty. Struggling families have been able to overcome obstacles that previously held them back. Joseph and Benjamin are brothers from a small village near our Mercy Care Site in Kenya. When they were still very young, their mother passed away and the boys went to live with their grandmother.

Life with their grandmother was full of happy moments until she passed away. Her death deeply affected the brothers. Sorrowful and lonely, they tried to carry on

Orphaned brothers start a new hope-filled life

and take care of themselves. As hard as they tried to wake up early for their eight kilometer walk to school, they were often late or absent.

Our site staff and members of Chalice family circles pitched in to support the brothers, butthey were still not receiving the care they needed due to their remote location.

The Sisters of St. Joseph, who manage an orphanage, took the brothers in. Workingwith Chalice sponsorship, they offer shelter, food, medical care, recreation, and quality education.

Initially, Joseph and Benjamin had some difficulty adapting to their new routine, but the friendly and loving atmosphere helped them settle in quickly. By Christmas, Benjamin and Joseph had made many new friends and celebrated a beautiful holiday season filled with love and joy.
