BIG 12 CONFERENCE STANDINGS

LOOKING AHEADThe Red Raiders will return to the Dallas/Fort Worth area next weekend to take part in the UT-Arlington Hilton Invitational where Tech will face Prairie View A&M, Louisiana-Lafayette, and the host Mavericks.

TECH FACES GRAMBLING ONCE AGAINThe Red Raiders will face Grambling State for the second time this season Friday as Tech previously swept the Tigers in three sets in the finale of the TCU Invitational. The match will mark the first time Tech has faced a non-conference opponent twice in a season since 1996 when the Red Raiders de-feated SMU in two neutral site contests.

NOTABLESuTexas Tech is currently riding a six-match win-ning streak, the school’s longest run since winning six-straight from Sept. 2-10, 2006. The Red Raid-ers have a chance to extend that streak to nine-straight this weekend which has not been previ-ously accomplished since the start of the 1997 season. uThe Red Raiders come into the match having swept four of its last five matches by a 3-0 deci-sion. The lone match to go an extra set was against Morehead State in the finale of the Texas Tech Invi-tational.uTexas Tech will be looking for its second tour-nament title of the season this weekend, a feat that has not been accomplished since the 2006 squad won both the UTPA and South Florida Invitationals.uTexas Tech’s six wins on the season already matches its combined total from the 2009 and 2010 seasons. uTexas Tech’s 3-0 homestand marked its best record at home to start a season since the 2004 squad opened the year with four-straight wins in Lubbock. uTexas Tech opponents are only hitting .082 against the Red Raiders on the year, the lowest average among Big 12 Conference schools. Only UConn has posted a hitting percentage above .200 against the Red Raiders this season.

PIPER HONORED ON BIG 12 WEEKLY AWARDSPrior to Tuesday night’s match at Texas-Pan Ameri-can, sophomore Aubree Piper was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance during the Texas Tech Invitational. Piper finished with 21 blocks to go along with 15 kills on the weekend, matching her single-game highs for total blocks and block assists in the pro-cess. No Tech player had been previously honored with a Big 12 weekly award since Amanda Dowdy was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Sept. 15, 2008.

FLORA STARTS TECH CAREER IN STYLEOf the eight head coaches in school history, only two have better records in their first seven matches than Don Flora. Donna Martin began her tenure in 1985 with a school-record nine-straight wins, while Nancy Todd won eight-straight to start her head coaching career in 2003.

DOWDY CREEPING UP RECORD BOOKThrough only seven matches, Amanda Dowdy has continued her trek up the school’s record book as the senior is currently third for career kills (1,127) and fourth in attempts with 3,148. She needs 206 kills to catch Melissa McGehee (1999-02) for second all-time, while she will likely move to third all-time in attempts this weekend as she trails Christine Martin (1993-97) by only 33 swings.

MEYERS MOVING ON UP TOOLike Dowdy, Karlyn Meyers faces the possibility of moving up the school’s record book as the senior setter recently became just the eighth player in school history to reach 2,000 assists over a career. She enters this weekend trailing Mary Loescher (1985-87) for seventh all-time with 2,075 career as-sists, 264 shy of Loescher’s mark.

DOWDY LEADS TRIO OF PLAYERS ON ALL-TOUR-NAMENT TEAMAmanda Dowdy was one of three Red Raiders named to the Texas Tech Invitational all-tournament team as the senior picked up most valuable player honors. Fellow senior Karlyn Meyers and junior Miara Cave were also honored as the Red Raiders claimed the tournament title following a 3-0 weekend.

TEXAS TECH INVITATIONAL MARKS A FIRSTThe Red Raiders’ tournament win last weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational was the program’s first since it claimed the North Texas Tournament to start the 2008 season. Tech had also not won its own home tournament since 2004 when the Red Raiders defeated UTPA, UTEP, and North Texas as part of the Red Raider Classic.

CAVE ACCURATE FROM THE RIGHT-SIDEComing into the season, Don Flora knew he had a special talent in Miara Cave. His only question was would that translate into kills when the Red Raiders hit the floor. The junior has proved Flora right so far as she is second on the team in kills with 62 while her .397 hitting percentage is among the Big 12 leaders. The San Antonio native has hit .400 or higher in five of six matches this season.

TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL

Senior Amanda Dowdy will not only be looking to end her Texas Tech career off on a high note this year, but she will also be chasing several program records.

The Lexington, Texas native entered the year fifth all-time in career kills and sixth in career attacks. Dowdy is only the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 kills over a career as she has recorded 1,041 over three seasons.

Dowdy also joined the top 10 last year on the sin-gle-season charts as her 424 kills ranked 10th all-time and her 1,286 attempts was sixth all-time. She also set the single-match record for kills a year ago as she finished with 37 against Colorado on Oct. 13 before nearing the feat again against the Buffaloes,

MATCH NOTES

milestone in the tournament finale against More-head State as the junior finished with 21 digs in the match. Her previous high had been 13 which she originally set against Texas State in 2009.

PIPER BIG 12 LEADER IN BLOCKSAubree Piper enters this week’s road trip as the Big 12 leader in blocks as the sophomore is averaging 1.87 per set. The sophomore has totaled 28 blocks on the season, having matched her single-match high twice last weekend during the Texas Tech In-vitational.

DOWDY, CAVE MAKE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMTexas Tech senior Amanda Dowdy and junior Miara Cave were both named to the TCU Invitational All-Tournament team after leading the Red Raiders to a second-place showing last weekend.

MORE BALANCE, BETTER RESULTSIf there was one consistent variable in Tech’s open-ing weekend, it would be that the Red Raiders have more balance on offense. The trio of Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all had at least 10 kills each in both of the first two matches. In the process, Tech’s hitting percentage rose to a .256 average over three matches, including a .388 mark against UConn, the Red Raiders’ highest at-tacking percentage since defeating South Florida in three sets on Sept. 9, 2006.

DAVID JOINS ELITE COMPANYSince the Red Raiders joined the Big 12 in 1996, no Tech freshman has begun her career with double-digit kill figures in back-to-back matches. That is until Breeann David. The Denver City product fin-ished with 11 kills against TCU and followed with 14 the following day against UConn. David finished with a .500 hitting percentage against UConn as she was 14-for-24 on the attack en route to post-ing Tech’s highest individual hitting percentage since Barbara Conceicao recorded a .526 average on Sept. 11, 2009 against Gonzaga.

FRESHMAN GET VALUABLE TIME AT TCUOne thing Don Flora wanted to see while at TCU was how his young team of mainly freshmen and sophomores would respond in a competitive at-mosphere. After Tech easily defeated Grambling State in the opening set, Flora went with a lineup

CAVE ACCURATE ON THE ATTACKAfter a spring and fall filled with high expectations, Miara Cave lived up to them through one weekend as the junior was third on the team in kills while posting a team-high .453 hitting percentage in the process. Cave finished with 30 kills on the weekend as she tied her career high with 15 kills against TCU.

TCU INVITATIONAL NOTABLESuTexas Tech had not previously had three players with double-digit kills over the first two matches of a season since 2007. Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all did so with the Red Raiders as the trio accounted for over 80 percent of Tech’s kills against TCU and UConn. uTexas Tech’s match against UConn marked its first against a Big East opponent since falling to Syra-cuse on Sept. 8, 2007. uAmanda Dowdy’s streak of 27-straight matches where she led the team in kills was snapped against Grambling State when Sam Podraza and Mikia Mills recorded eight kills each to pace the Red Raiders. Dowdy was pulled from the match following the first set against the Tigers.

DOWDY NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 Senior Amanda Dowdy was recognized prior to the season as Tech’s only selection on the Preseason All-Big 12 team. Dowdy was among the top offen-sive players in the conference a year ago en route to be selected to the All-Big 12 first team following the season. This marks the second-straight season Dowdy has been honored on the preseason and first as a unanimous selection.

MEYERS ADDS EXPERIENCE AT SETTERWith such a young roster, the Red Raiders will rely on senior setter Karlyn Meyers at the setter position. A two-year starter, Meyers is one of the most-accom-plished setters in school history as she is already among the top 10 all-time in career assists and as-sists per set average.

TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALLRED RAIDERS WILL BE YOUNGTexas Tech will be one of the younger teams in the country as 15 of the program’s 21 players are listed as either a freshman or sophomore. Two of the squad’s six upperclassmen, juniors Ciara Gib-son and Kelly Chiffer, will both redshirt this season, giving the Red Raiders only four upperclassmen on the court - seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers and juniors Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan.

FLORA ADDS VETERAN ASSISTANT IN CORONELOne of the first things Don Flora said he wanted once he arrived at Texas Tech was to hire another proven assistant. He got his wish when Jojit Cor-onel compiled the Tech staff. Coronel, the head coach at George Washington the previous 10 sea-sons, joins fellow assistant Beth Falls and director of operations Amy Gandy.

CAVE PRIMED FOR STELLAR JUNIOR SEASONWhen asked who his most improved player was at the end of spring, Don Flora did not have to hesi-tate to say Miara Cave. Flora’s has described Cave’s spring as “going back to the basics” as the junior primarily worked on her footwork. The result has been a new-found confidence for Cave, who will be looking to improve on last season’s numbers where she was second on the team with 176 kills.

VAUGHAN RETURNS TO LIBERO POSITIONTory Vaughan will return to the libero position this season for the first time since she was a freshman. The now-junior spent the 2010 as a defensive spe-cialist, playing in all 29 matches while finishing fourth on the team with 147 digs. Vaughan played in all but two matches as a freshman, totaling 143 digs in the process, third-highest on the team.

RED RAIDERS BOAST 12 NEWCOMERSSoon after his hire, Don Flora immediately hit the recruiting trail, traveling all over the country trying to build the Tech roster. The hard work paid off as the Red Raiders boast 12 newcomers to this year’s roster, including nine high school prospects.

DAVID LOOKS TO FOLLOW FAMILY LEGACYBreeann David’s commitment to Texas Tech last spring not only gave the program one of the top recruits in the country, but it continued a fam-ily legacy. David’s mother, the former Megan Mc-Guire, was a standout volleyball athlete for Tech in the 1980s while her father, Stan David, starred on the football team during the same time before being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 1984 NFL Draft. Both her mother and aunt, Susan Kelly Mc-Guire, are still among the top 10 in school history of every blocking category. David’s older sister, Leah David, is also the team’s student manager.

RANGEL BACK IN ACTION AFTER INJURYDravon Rangel will be back in action for the first time in almost a year this week as the redshirt sophomore missed almost all of last season with a knee injury. Rangel played in two matches of the season-opening Rice Tournament before receiving a medical redshirt at the conclusion of the season. Rangel will be making her return nearly 15 minutes from her hometown of Grand Prairie.

RED RAIDERS ADD SETTER TRANSFER, HRAGYILTech added depth to the setter position last spring as Nicole Hragyil became the first commitment of the Don Flora era, joining the program at mid-term just in time to participate in spring drills. Hra-

AVCA TOP 25 POLLgyil adds depth for the Red Raiders as she will join Brandy Huskey as a backup to Karlyn Meyers. Both Hragyil and Huskey will also see time as a back row specialist.

GIBSON, CHIFFER SET TO REDSHIRTTexas Tech’s two junior transfers, Ciarra Gibson and Kelly Chiffer, will both redshirt this season, head coach Don Flora announced prior to the year. Gib-son arrives at Tech following two seasons at Ken-tucky State while Chiffer previously played at Cy-press College.

BIG 12 BOASTS THREE IN PRESEASON TOP 25The Big 12 Conference has three schools among the top 25 of the preseason American Volleyball Coach-es Association (AVCA) poll. Texas led the way at No. 4 while Oklahoma and Iowa State were both in the top 20 at No. 16 and No. 18 respectively. Missouri

TECH PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG 12 PLAYThe Red Raiders did not receive the preseason vote of confidence they hoped for as Tech was picked to finish last in the nine-team Big 12 Conference. Texas was picked to win the conference championship in a vote of the league coaches.
