A horticulture or plant specialist is someone who selects and cares for the plants that are there in a public or any private area. They identify and treat ill crops, shrubs or trees. They can work for government organisations, schools, farms, golf courses etc. They need to be outdoors most of the times and their work is physically challenging.

Some employers want their specialists to be expert in horticulture, while others may require a complete education profile. If a specialist wants to work with pesticides, they need to have a licence for the same. Apart from that, a state issued driver’s licence is also a must.

STEP 1:

Be it a certificate, or a bachelor’s degree, employers ask for some sort of formal education this area. Students who have opted for introductory classes in botany, plant identification and garden biology are eligible for the same.

Tips: have basic computer skills. The basic skills of operating the computer always prove beneficial in case you are planning to become a supervisor, and might need to work indoors.

STEP 2:

An entry level position in the starting is a good way to begin with; after appropriate experience for identifying the plant the protected varieties and diseases, they may have better chances of a promoted position in the organisation. Try and build your communication skills and leadership skills that help in management with your peer horticulturists.

STEP 3:Applying for pesticides requires getting a licence in plant nurseries in UK and also other places. It is issued by state agricultural and environmental protection board. Also it needs re-certification at regular basis.

STEP 4:Certification will display to the employers that there is basic level of standard that is required to follow for becoming one horticulture expert. There are many state based associations that offer such a certification.

STEP 5:State issued pesticide applicator and licenses should be updated on a regular basis. Various education programmes are also available that let them increase their degrees and certifications on a regular basis.
