British colonists in New England continue to setter on the land already

inhabited by Native Americans. Settlers are pushing farther and

farther west into western Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut. Native American were

often hospitable to new setters providing them with land and

agricultural advice. Eventually, however, disputes between Puritans

and Native Americans arose over land and religion.

• Native Americans saw their lands being taken over by settlers and

they feared an end to their way of life.

• Native Americans resented Puritan efforts to convert them.

• Native Americans were angered by the prohibition of hunting and

ACTIONS TAKEN

• The Wampanoag chief Metacom (called King Philip by the English due to his adoption of European dress and customs) organized his tribe and several others into an alliance to wipe out invaders.

• Native Americans attacked and burned English settlements.

• British colonists responded by killing as many Native Americans as possible, even some friendly tribes.

• The combat was the fiercest in New England history.

• Food shortages, disease and heavy casualties wore down Native American resistance.

Eventually they surrendered and fled.

• Metacom was ultimately killed and his wife and son sold into

slavery.
