The production, distribution and sale of food is the largest industry in the world.
Suffolk County leads NY State in agricultural production.
In many wealthy regions across the
U.S there are food deserts
Long Island has more than 30….
In a profit-driven agricultural production system, food deserts, hunger, and malnutrition are inevitable.
Long Island HomeGrown is a collaborative
food systems social enterprise conceived to
address the social, nutritional,
economic and community
development needs created by the prevalence of food
deserts in Nassau County and Western Suffolk Long Island, New York.
A revenue-generating enterprise that leverages existing
assets on Long Island (agriculture industry, church food ministries,
nonprofit and for profit partners) coordinated through a highly efficient
organizational infrastructure can increase
access to locally produced food, improve health,
create jobs, revive the economy, and benefit
the environment.
Theory of Change
Long Island HomeGrown was conceived
through a 12-month planning process led
by
