Locum tenens is Latin for “place holder” and is the term used to describe the practice of providers such as nurse practitioners, advanced practitioners, CRNAs, and physician assistants temporarily fulfilling the duties of full-time medical staff. The locum tenens industry began in the early 1970s when the University of Utah secured a federal grant to staff rural health clinics in medically underserved areas of the western United States. The staffing program proved so successful, many hospitals began calling for more locum tenens assistance.
