from the editorHere we are already in August – the weather may not have been great so far this year, but groups are still battling on, hosting events in your communities.

We have the popular Friends of Burnham War Memorial Hospital at the end of the month, with many events happening before. Keep your eye out for the Dreamscheme undertaking community tasks during the summer and not forgetting the popular National Play Day in the Apex Park at the start of August.

I have put together a piece looking at local places you can visit that are either free or very cheap – if you visit any during the summer, let me know how you got on and we may be able to put a write up in later editions of Localreach.

North Sedgemoor Children’s Centre Cluster

Members of the Burnham District Group of the C.S.R.F. toasted the Queen at a Garden Party held in members', Mr and Mrs Gordon Smith's beautiful garden summer house.

During a very pleasant social morning members were plied with sausage rolls and a fine selection of cakes - generously provided by Dorothy Smith and Beth Bray - and a toast to the Queen was proposed by Hon. Sec. Joyce Beard with wine kindly gifted by Maurice Nicholls.

A Royal quiz was set by Mrs Beard and Maurice was the winner of a Jubilee commemorative plate.

The July meeting will take place at Apex Park on Tuesday 24th from 10.30 a.m. Members are requested to bring a picnic and take part in croquet and clock golf. There will be indoor games in the park office in inclement weather.

There will be no meeting during August.

Since 2001 a playday has run in conjunction with the National Playday and for the past 4 years it has been run at Apex Park in Highbridge.

It is organised by a committee of people who are interested and have a passion for Play. Numbers increase each year and 2011 saw over 6000 children attend the event. They all have to be accompanied by an adult. Activities are arranged for children aged 0 – 14yrs. The event is completely free and the committee have to rely on

obtaining grants to run the day. Sedgemoor District Council is very much involved and the Children Centres in Sedgemoor provide some funding and staff. We have been fortunate in securing funding from Islport Foods, Oasis Global Engineering, Octopus, Highbridge, Bridgwater Children’s Centres and Brock House. Those attending have the opportunity of donating cash to enable the playday to run each year.

This year the playday is to be run on Wednesday 1st August at Apex Park 10.00 – 3.00pm. There are over 30 activities which include climbing wall, archery, canoeing, fishing, forest school, drumming, man from story mountain, south American crafts and stories, arts and crafts, music and

movement, clay, circus skills, street dancing, edu pets, inflatables, magic and rope building etc. Various food outlets are booked or families are able to enjoy eating their own picnic lunches in the beautiful park area. A few of the comments from last year included the following:

portas pilot town BidThe Burnham on Sea Town Team submitted their second bid to become a Portas Pilot town on Friday 29th June 2012. We hope that this will help us access much needed help to rejuvenate the High Street and surrounding areas.

Bev Milner Simonds from the Town Team said "We have buckets (and spades) full of ideas and need some assistance in galvanising them into long-term, sustainable changes. The opportunity to be a Portas Pilot is a chance to do something meaningful in Burnham-on-Sea, before it is too late. We are not interested in racing others to the bottom of deprivation indices’ – we are proud, we believe in Burnham and we hope that the Department for Communities and Local Government, who are judging the bids will recognise this and join with us in making it better forever."

The Town team hope to hear back by the end of July as to whether they have been successful and in the meantime continue to work hard on bringing some elements of the plan to fruition.

Did you know that there are 5.4 million people in the UK with asthma? That means many of us know someone with the condition or have it ourselves.

In an asthma attack, the muscles of the air passages in the lungs go into spasm. This causes the airways to become narrowed, making breathing difficult. It's a distressing thing for the sufferer and for people watching.

An attack could be triggered by an allergy, a cold, or a certain drug. Other triggers include cigarette smoke, pollen and dust but some attacks may be caused by no trigger at all. Most asthma suffers will usually use a reliever inhaler

during an attack to help them. Someone having an asthma

attack will have difficulty in breathing, particularly breathing out. There may also be a wheeze when the person breathes out, coughing and the person may be distressed and anxious.

In a severe case, the person may have difficulty in talking, lips going blue and difficulty talking – in this case, call for an ambulance immediately.

To reassure the person, keep calm and get them to take a puff of their reliever inhaler. Encourage them to breathe slowly and deeply. Help the person sit down in a comfortable position, but not lying down – usually sitting

upright.A mild attack should ease

within a few minutes. If it doesn’t, ask the person to take another dose from their inhaler.

If the person doesn't respond to treatment after five minutes, they appear to be getting worse or they find talking difficult due to breathlessness, call 999/112 for emergency help

How to treat Asthma

With the Highbridge Hotel an acknowledged major eyesore in the centre of the town since the devastating fire in 2008 the owners of the site, their architects and advisors together with the District and Town Councils have been investigating different ideas of how the building and the wider site may be used in the future. With elements of the Grade II-listed building still standing the challenge to secure a viable and achievable solution is immense.

There have been many meetings with interested parties and the owners over the years as to the redevelopment of the whole ex-market site and re-use of the former hotel badly damaged by fire. As with all schemes of this nature, some ideas that are presented are not feasible, practical or affordable.

A group comprising of councillors from Sedgemoor District Council and Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council together with council officers, landowners and other potential partners have met over recent months to discuss and develop some imaginative ideas linking into current proposed initiatives in the town which could act as a catalyst for the site and for Highbridge in a wider sense.

As with any potential development, there are confidential discussions between developers; owners and other parties during the early and delicate stages of negotiation. Should the owners/developers wish to comment publically on their proposals; that is their prerogative.

As Sedgemoor District Council is the planning authority to which any planning application will be submitted, it cannot comment on any potential uses until a planning application is received, where it will go through all the normal consultation processes. SDC can only comment on a submitted application; the Council will not give informal views as to any information or rumour that is publically available.

If, and when, a planning application is received, then Sedgemoor District Council will assess the scheme as put forward on its own merits and details at that time, within the SDC policy framework.

All planning applicants are encouraged however to engage in proper consultation with the local community and Town Council to gain support for the principles of their proposals prior to submitting any application to the District Council.

Burnham nursing centre summer fayreOn Saturday August 18th between 1pm and 4pm the Burnham Nursing Centre on Oxford Street is hosting its Summer Fair. There will be all the usually activities available during the afternoon and the centre would like as many people as possible to support this event to raise funds for the residents – this in turn buys things that would not normally be affordable – such as visits to the zoo and other activities for enjoyment and recreation.

The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre is starting a new Creative Club. Held on the first Wednesday of each month it is for anyone working or studying within the Creative Industries in Somerset and is a platform for Creative Exchange Opportunities, Debate and Dialogue.

The club’s first meeting will run at The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre from 7pm-9pm on the 1st August and will continue to meet on a monthly basis. It will be organised and facilitated by the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre’s Visual Arts Coordinator Neil Hansford who can be contacted at [email protected].

The Creative Club idea originated in the West Somerset region and has worked well toward the cohesion of the creative sector in the area.

The idea was then shared at the, Let’s Work Together: Creative Somerset Launch day on Wednesday 30th May at Dillington House, Ilminster.

Neil said, “The day was fantastic, the variety of arts and design disciplines, covered by the people attending the event was staggering. One idea that was transferable to our theatre was the open platform event for the creative sector in our region. The name will be kept the same as the original with the ambition that it could become a brand across the South West of England and beyond.” The hope is that people involved from all sectors of the arts will attend to share knowledge opportunities across our region.

One of the most common problems that we get asked to look is the slow computer. Typically, this can give symptoms such as being very slow to start, lots of hourglass (waiting) situations and an Internet experience which is painfully sluggish.

We find generally that this tends to affect computer that are running Microsoft’s Windows XP and Vista operating systems, but more worryingly even Windows 7 computers can grind to a halt if things aren’t right. I would say that the two main causes of slow computers are lack of RAM memory and some bloated anti-virus products.

Although not for the faint hearted, it is relatively easy to purchase and install more RAM memory. These take the form of a small circuit board which can be plugged into spare slots on the computer’s motherboard (whilst the machine is switched off) to increase RAM. This applies to both tower style computers and laptops, but it is worth mentioning that there are different types of RAM, so it is worth checking what RAM the system currently is using. In general terms, 2 GB (gigabytes) of RAM is the minimum for any computer, but even going from ½ GB to 1 ½ GB of RAM would really help.

Other tips to increase speed of a computer

are to remove old unused software from the computer, for example, in the control panel you may see “Add or Remove Programs” or “Programs” / “Uninstall a Program” and it is worth going into this section to see if you recognise any old programs which you no longer use. Do not remove anything that you do not recognise, but look for old software which is still on the computer, but no longer used. Somerset Rural Youth Project delivers a number of projects to young people in rural areas across the county.

This spans from educational and health advice, to job clubs and accreditation through learning.

To help provide these

services it relies on a fleet of minibuses and at the moment the charity is currently looking for someone who can drive one of these buses. A driver would be trained and CRB checked by SRYP if they are prepared to take on this role.

Burnham & highbridge BandThe next concert by the Burnham and Highbridge Band will be held in the Princess Hall on the evening of Sunday 26th August. The concert starts at 7.45pm and tickets are available from the Princess Box-office or pay at the door. Admission is £6 (£5 under 16s and over 65s).

This is the fourth in our series of Sunday concerts which continue on the last Sunday of each month until the end of November. Come along and enjoy an evening of light brass band music from your local band in a variety of genre. friends of Burnham hospital feteThe Friends of Burnham Hospital will be holding their annual fete on August Bank Holiday Monday. The fete, which is a regular and traditional event on the Bank Holiday ( August 27th) takes place in Manor Gardens.

It regularly draws large crowds and many local charities, Rotary Club, Lions International, Moose etc have stalls to both entertain with games and sell their produce, books white elephants etc. Any charity wishing to have a stall can phone 783121 or 785727 to book a place. It is dangerous and tempting providence to say that the sun always shines on the Hospital Fete but it has not been affected by the weather in over 20 years. fritzlar twinningDespite the horrible weather, which they assured us was just the same in Germany, 30 guests from our Twin Town Fritzlar spent a whirlwind 4 days with local host families and B&Bs, visiting Exeter & Dawlish as well as enjoying Somerset, before going on to Wales and Chester. In this Olympic Year, the highlight of the Farewell Evening was a breathtaking display by “The Monarchs” young gymnasts, who were fearless as well as hugely talented and entertaining. Cove are pleased to announce a new series of events over the summer.

Every Saturday morning in July the Community Gardener for Marine Cove will be available in the garden between 10:00am and midday to answer questions or to encourage volunteer involvement. Please feel free to come to the garden, ask any questions you have and see how you can become a part of the Friends group. The Friends of Marine Cove and Sedgemoor District Council are particularly keen to hear from families who are interested in helping in the garden. We have moved the regular drop-in slot from the first Monday in the month to every Saturday with a view to encouraging more involvement in the project.

11:00am the first of 3 summer History Walks, being run by The Friends of Marine Cove, in association with Sedgemoor District Council will be held. The Walks will start and end at Marine Cove and will take in some of the historical sites in and around the town of Burnham on Sea. Historian and Author Bob Thomas, who volunteers with the Friends of Marine Cove, will be leading the walk. Advanced tickets can be purchased through the Burnham Information Centre for £2.50. Numbers are restricted so please book early to avoid disappointment. The funds raised will go towards future events at Marine Cove.

Thursday 2nd August the local Chalice Morris Men will be performing at Marine Cove at 7.45pm for a 30 minute demonstration.

Saturday August 11th between 11:00am and 3:00pm the Craft Fair will take place. Jacqui Strong is keen to hear from any local crafts person

willing to pay for a pitch at a cost of £5 for the days event. If anyone would like to put on a display during this time then we are busy preparing a programme for the day. Places are limited, so please contact Jacqueline Strong via the details provided below as soon as possible. If you are not a retailer just come along and enjoy a stroll around the garden whilst picking up some locally made crafts.

Crime Prevention AdviceAugust already. Has the summer

been and gone? Please don’t forget to keep back doors and windows locked when

you’re out. Almost a third of all burglaries in homes occur where

insecure doors and windows, ‘invite’ a burglar. You would be surprised just how many front doors are left open overnight.

Cars are the same. Leaving anything of any value in the car, even out of sight, puts you at risk. Significant numbers of victims of car crime report that the rear seats are being moved to allow access into the boot area, where valuables had been left. If you value it, don’t leave it for someone else to devalue it.

We all still need to keep vigilant. Keep burglars and thieves away from our area. Don’t let them get a foothold and think of us as an easy touch. If you see it and cant challenge it, TELL US. It is simple, just ring 101. You wont be wasting our time. We are here 24 hours a day, responding to your concerns and needs. Make sure you are part of the strong community. Make a difference.

The West Country is to have its first Wildlife and Heritage Education Centre thanks to a massive £502,600 grant from The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). This project will give thousands of school children from across the region direct access to the natural world at a time when the UK’s wildlife has never been under a greater threat and many youngsters would struggle to identify an oak tree.

The facility is to be provided at the Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre at East Huntspill in Somerset where Disc World author Sir Terry Pratchett recently launched a £4.4 million Call of the Wild Appeal. This aimed to build the education centre together with a wildlife teaching hospital.

Now work on the Education Centre part of the project, which involves the renovation and extension of a 17th Century barn, will start in October and is expected to be completed by May 2013. A delighted Secret World Founder Pauline Kidner said, “The Heritage Lottery grant provided 79% of the cash needed to build, equip and run the centre as well as funding a South West schools outreach programme over the next three and a half years.” “Set in the heart of Secret World, the centre will give children their only guaranteed chance of seeing and learning about a wide range of British wildlife at a time when most youngsters spend only nine per cent of their time outdoors,” said Pauline.

“We have been inundated

with wildlife orphans over the past couple of months of the breeding season but while what we do with the rescue side of the charity is vitally important, it is the education of our children that will have the greatest Impact on wildlife in the future,” she said.

To address the problem of habitat loss which was endangering many species of British wildlife, Secret World would also be providing schools with advice on how to make their grounds more wildlife friendly, said Pauline.

Secret World Capital Appeal Director Tina Antonio said that at a time when one in four of the UK’s wildlife species were depleted or endangered, children were now more disconnected with the countryside than ever before.

“So we are thrilled that we have attracted a funder who is deeply aware of the issues and without their support we could never have started work on the centre so soon,” she said.

Richard Bellamy, acting Head of Heritage Lottery Fund South West, said: “We at HLF are delighted to announce this award of £502,600 to the Wild Hearts Project, which will give visitors of all ages fantastic new opportunities to explore their local wildlife. The Education centre and the planned outreach activities will help young people learn about the importance and issues around our precious natural heritage, whilst older members of the community will have a chance to get involved through volunteering at the centre. We are all custodians of our natural heritage, and through projects

like this we are able to help ensure that it can be preserved for future generations to enjoy.” The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded Secret World £12,867 at the end of last year to plan their proposed centre’s education programme in readiness for submitting a full funding bid. The money was used to consult with all the schools in the South West, train volunteers and create an education plan. Consultation revealed that schools fervently believed in the value of educating children about wildlife and were keen to get involved with the project and make use of the facilities. The new Wildlife Education Centre will include meeting rooms and a lecture theatre where schools will be encouraged to take part in inspiring educational programmes giving youngsters a unique opportunity to learn about British wildlife and how to help save it.

Launching the Call of the Wild Appeal earlier this year Sir Terry Pratchett said Secret World was the South West’s only 24 hour wildlife rescue service and its work had never been more vital. “Orphaned by traffic, hurt by our pollution and rubbish and forced out of their natural habitats by our developments, Britain’s wildlife is in serious decline so much so that even the sparrow and the much loved hedgehog are endangered,” he said.

Also supporting the Wildlife Education Centre and teaching hospital project are UK Wildlife TV celebrities Mike Dilger, Simon King, Steve Backshall, Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan.

enabled to carry out community based work projects for which they earn points. These can then be exchanged for trips and activities of their choice.

advice, guidance and support to help groups across the UK set up their own dreamschemes.

Burnham dreamscheme was set up in February 2011 after the success of the Highbridge dreamscheme that had been running for several years before and had successfully attracted interest from local youth people.

The scheme is open to all young people and is designed to encourage positive engagement within the community you live – at the same time offering social integration and fun activities – if you put in the work.

Now is a good time to start planting spring bulbs in your garden. Tulips and hyacinths are good varieties for forcing on for Christmas Time. Once you have planted them in their pots, place the pots in a cool dark place for about 6 to 8 weeks, do not forget to water them if needed.

Once they have started to grow gradually bring them out into the light but not bright sunlight, do not put them in too warm a place to begin with or you will end up with very tall plants.

If you have Madonna lilies in

your garden that are getting overgrown or you just need to move them, this is the month to act. Prepare the soil by deep digging, adding leaf mould and lime. Madonna lilies are among the few lilies that need lime.

Clematis, honeysuckle and wistaria should be trained before the shoots become too long.

Strawberry beds should be looked over and a few strong plants selected for planting in a south facing border, and hopefully they will produce some early fruit next year.

Pinch out side shoots from tomatoes plants and remove some of the lower leaves to aid the ripening of the fruit, when watering add some tomato feed to help produce more tomatoes.

Globe artichokes must be cut down as the heads are gathered.

Asparagus beds must be kept clear of weeds. Unless seed is wanted, cut off the heads of the flowers so the energy goes into the roots of the plants.

Water adventure play park

The Water Park opened on 17th July 2010, and since

then has become a popular attraction on Weston's

seafront.The park is open all year round (except for

grounds maintenance), with the splash pad running

seasonally from April to September, this year the

re-commissioning of the water play area will take

place mid March. The Park opens at 9am most

days and closes at dusk, or 8pm.

Seasonal Charges of £1 are made from 2nd May

to 31st August 2012 inclusive, between the hours of

10am - 4pm for children between the ages of 1-16

years of age

the splash padThe splash pad offers a range of fountains and sprays which are triggered by sensors and buttons. These run for a short period of time before they need to be triggered again.The Port beacon, the tallest piece of equipment on the splash pad, emits a rain shower

effect while others create tunnels and arches.

the Wooden play equipment

The wooden play equipment includes the Stockholm

Castle, a double cable way and a toddler area where

the musical can play the xylophone or crawl through

a short tunnel. A sand pit is located near the rear of

the park along with a climbing pyramid and snake

swing.The Town Mayor at the time, Councillor Philip Judd,

said: "The new facility is a terrific asset to Weston-

super-Mare and will further boost the tourism

prospects of the town and provide an all year round

facility for local residents and visitors."

The development of the Water Park was part

funded through North Somerset Council and

their success in obtaining grant funding through

the Commission for Architecture and the Built

Environment (CABE) and the Sea Change Programme.

The total cost of the project came to £435,000, of

which £125,000 came via North Somerset Council
