Our story begins in Texas, where our founder, John F. Baugh, created Sysco. He grew up in Waco during the depression era, where he began his lifelong passion with the food industry at an A&P grocery store as a stock boy. Eventually he became the manager, and in 1946, he and his wife Eula Mae founded a new company, Zero Foods. They began selling and distributing frozen foods to restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, fast-food stores and grocery chains.

While Americans began eating out more and more, John envisioned a national foodservice distribution organization and shared ideas with industry friends across the country. His dream became a reality in 1970, when Zero Foods and eight other companies joined together to form Sysco in Houston, Texas.

Whether purchasing meats, desserts, breads, produce or dairy, you can count on many of the products you order to come from Texas. In 2014, the father and son team of Tony and Gib Reynolds settled on Waco, Texas, to build their controlled environment farm. Together they founded Urban Produce, growing lettuces and leafy greens year round, to provide locally grown produce in the central Texas region. Both with business backgrounds, these MBA-educated farmers have a passion to bring the freshest produce possible to Texans. Using technology to tame the climate and science to maintain food safety, the Reynolds family put a personal touch on every head of lettuce shipped to their customers. Their greenhouse, located in the heart of Texas, can produce a thousand heads of lettuce and leafy greens each day, including basil, frisee, radicchio, and specialty greens (and reds) for salad mixes. To ensure safety, they keep a closed door to pests and the outdoors, farming entirely inside a computer managed greenhouse. Inspected and certified by the USDA for proper growing and handling techniques, they also avoid the use of herbicides, insecticides and pesticides. The Urban Produce tagline, “Same day harvest, from our farm to your fork,” expresses their commitment to deliver the freshest produce available to the region.

In 1981, when Patty Johnson began growing herbs in a flower bed, little did she know that one day Patty’s Herbs would become the leading grower and supplier of fresh cut culinary herbs in Texas. Patty began knocking on doors, delivering fresh herbs to restaurants in Styrofoam ice chests in the San Antonio area. Over time, her customers grew to include produce distributors, institutional food service companies and retail grocers. Today, Patty’s Herbs products are available throughout much of Texas. Patty’s Herbs is located in Pearsall, Texas, about an hour south of San Antonio. This region is known for its fertile soil and other vegetable crops grown locally, such as corn, cabbage, potatoes, spinach and onions. In May 1996, John Soules Foods began operations in its newly constructed 83,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, USDA Inspected processing facility on 67 acres of land just north of Tyler.

Construction of additional supporting buildings (after 1996) increased the total plant facility to a size of 115,000 square feet.

In 1998, the company completed a 9,600 square foot building expansion to support two new cooked meat production lines, which initiated the company’s first venture into fully-cooked products.

To meet the needs of John Soules Foods rapid sales growth, in June 2006, the company completed construction of a 125,000 square foot expansion to a total 240,000 square foot facility. The plant expansion included two high volume, state-of-the-art production lines to produce fully-cooked meat products. Total project cost was $30 million.

In 1948, folks drove from miles around to the first Sadler’s Smokehouse in Henderson, to get a taste of Sadler’s authentic, premium pit-smoked meats. In 1961, Harold Sadler opened up his own Sadler’s Smokehouse in Lufkin, Texas. Harold had a real passion for making a high-quality, premium pit-smoked brisket. The demand for Sadler’s pit-smoked meats seemed insatiable. With the opening of their first food processing plant, the Sadlers decided to focus entirely on their fast emerging wholesale foodservice business. Today, Akaushi genetics are controlled by a group of Texans under the name HeartBrand Beef, Inc. Guenther & Son, Inc. shows few signs of advanced age, other than the beard on the founder’s picture on Pioneer brand products, the ancient mementos spread throughout his old home beside the mill in San Antonio, Texas, and in the foyer of the corporate headquarters next door.

When Carl Hilmar Guenther (the name is still pronounced GEN-thur) left his native Saxony at the age of 22, to cross the ocean in search of opportunity, he ended up living the American dream. He spent time in several areas of the United States before arriving in Texas in 1851, then eight years later refined his choice for a permanent milling operation from the German community of Fredericksburg, to the larger town of San Antonio. There he prospered. By the time of his death in 1902, Guenther could see that the company he built on the Texas frontier had a good chance of continuing successfully through the next generation and beyond. In 1960, Mr. Ybarra began producing corn tortillas for restaurants in the Baytown area. The operation consisted of five employees making approximately 200 dozen tortillas per hour. He continued this trend as a supplier for the next 20 plus years. In 1989, El Matador Foods was established and began selling products at the retail level, that consisted of corn and flour tortillas, as well as fried tortilla chips for snacks. By the end of 1997, El Matador Foods products were being distributed by SYSCO Food Services in Texas, New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Today, they manufacture corn and wheat flour tortillas, and also have the ability to produce flavored wraps, Indian ethic flatbreads, low carb, and whole wheat flour tortillas. Currently, they have a presence in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and the New Mexico market. El Matador Foods is a member of the Tortilla Industry Association, Go Texan, The American Institute of Baking International, and has recently obtained a Minority Business Entrepreneur Certification with the City of Houston, as well as being HUB Certified within the State of Texas.

Kurz, “The Good Bread Company,” is a family-owned Texas corporation specializing in the delivery of fresh bread, buns, tortillas and bakery products to large institutional customers across Texas. Kurz has distribution centers in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio, and proudly lists SYSCO among their food service customers.

Back in 2005, Georgia Hutton, a baker and foodie in Austin, set out to create a better gluten-free flour blend for a friend with celiac disease. Her mission was to improve the taste, texture and nutrition of all the rice blends on the market. Alabama native, musician, and now based in Austin, this 15-year food industry veteran George Milton likes it hot. Yes, folks, his Yellowbird Sauce will make you sweat. Cheesemakers, Inc., located in Montgomery County, Texas, was founded by James C. Keliehor, P.E., who is originally from South Texas growing up on his family farm. In 1888, a 14 year old Rosario “Frank” Liberto says goodbye to his hometown of Cefalu, Sicily, sailing for New Orleans and all the opportunities America could offer to a young immigrant. By 1894, he owned a store in Louisiana, and then moved to Beaumont, Texas. In 1909, the young man put down his family
