Change is Good!Like any other business, Local Life can’t afford to stand still so we’ve come up with a few new ideas for the magazine and had a bit of a revamp of some old favourites.

In this issue we introduce Jack’s Tracks, the first in a series of fantastic local walks which serves to highlight how close we live to some of Lancashire’s nicest countryside. What could be better this Autumn than a nice country walk, fortified along the way with a lovely pub lunch and even some liquid refreshments too!

We’ve also put together an introductory piece for well-known Standish independent financial advisers, Prosper IFA Ltd, and as from the next issue, they will be advising readers on the way to achieve long term financial security. We also say hello to Borron Shaw, who, for the first time, are featuring a series of properties for sale in the magazine.

There’s a new competition page too, just for children, and our popular Home Services section has had a bit of a makeover too, which should make it much easier for our readers to use.

Lancashire’s Criminal PastCome and learn about Lancashire’s criminal past! An illustrated talk is taking place at Up Holland Library next Tuesday (19th October), which will bring to light aspects of crime and crime-fighting from the Romans to the Victorians. It is set in the context of national laws and events, but focuses particularly on Lancashire and the life and death of Up Holland’s most infamous son, highwayman George Lyon, is mentioned. In addition, there’s a exhibition in the library about the man who called himself ‘King of Robbers’. George Lyon was executed at Lancaster Castle in 1815, along with his accomplices, David Bennett and William Houghton, and all three are now buried in the graveyard at St Thomas the Martyr Church. The talk starts at 2pm at the Library in Hall Green and, both the talk and refreshments are free, but please drop in to the library first or phone 01695 622368 to book your place.

Heritage WeekendPark Lane Chapel, next to ‘The Park’ pub on Wigan Road in Bryn, are holding their annual Heritage Weekend this weekend (9th and 10th October). The Chapel and School is open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 10am-12 noon on Sunday, and there will be old photographs and displays to look at and various stalls set up. The Harry Latham Memorial Concert will take place on Sunday at 2pm, with a performance by the North Ashton Band. Refreshments are available and car parking is free, so why not pop in to this chapel this weekend, which is over 300 years old, to explore a bit of local history?

Eagles SoarThe latest classes for the Eagles Dance Club have opened at the Grange Community Centre in Marus Bridge every Thursday, catering for all ages of dancers. Mixed dancing, including Latin, ballroom, party and salsa is enjoyed by smaller children between the ages of 3 and 6 years old (4.30-5.15pm) and older children between 7-16 years old (5.15-6pm) every Thursday.

And in the evening at the Grange, the adults come out to play! From 7pm-7.45pm, there’s a Salsa session and from 7.45-8.30pm, there’s ballroom and Latin dancing.

Children in Up Holland can take advantage of Tuesday’s classes at St Teresa’s Club on College Road. 4-6 year olds join the Uni Teds class between 5-6pm and children over 6 can join the beginners’ ballroom and Latin class which runs from 6-7 pm. All sessions are £4 each.

Surviving ChristmasThe national charity Action for Children are holding Christmas survival workshops at Hope Children’s centre in Marus Bridge on Thursday 4th and 11th November, from 1-3pm. The workshops are targeted at parents with children up to the age of 5 years old,

Bonfire EventOrrell’s big bonfire takes place this year on Friday 5th November next to the Red Triangle Cricket Club, off Winstanley Road in Orrell. Admission to this long-established event, which is run jointly by the cricket club and the YMCA, is just £2 and the gates open at 6pm. There will also be a fireworks display, amusements and rides for younger children and a burger van selling refreshments. Liquid refreshments for adults will be available from the bar at the cricket club. All proceeds for the event go to the cricket club and the YMCA.

Brick AppealThe Bricklayers Arms in the town centre of Wigan opened in July 2008 to provide homeless and

disadvantaged people with a dedicated place where they could recover and get back on their feet. With the cold nights round the corner, organisers at the Brick are appealing for donations to keep the project viable. Especially welcome are donations of long life packaged and tinned foods, such as pasta, soups, beans, potatoes, rice and vegetables, and also tea, coffee, sugar and long life milk. Stretch at the GrangeThe Active Living team are running Stretch and Relax sessions at the Grange Community Centre every Friday morning from 10.30-11.30am. These sessions, which cost £2 per person, offer a fun and safe way of exercising, a mixture of Pilates and stretching that promises to energise you and improve your general fitness. Happy Ladies TriumphThe annual Ladies Fun 6-a-side competition took place recently at Goose Green Cricket Club’s ground at Pony Dick. Contestants included Goose Green Happy Ladies, Hung-over Honeys and Standish Liquorish Allsorts, and the winners on the days were the Goose Green Happy Ladies! The winning team is pictured with their trophy, which was presented with their trophy by Winstanley Ward councillor, Rona Winkworth. A barbeque and a beat the goalie competition kept the spectators entertained and a collection on the day was donated to the Mayor’s Charity.

Blue Bins on PilotWigan Council has selected a local area to trial the introduction of the Blue Bin scheme, which, if successful, will replace the white bag paper recycling scheme. The pilot scheme begins in November for a six month trial period, and the areas included in the pilot will be the entire Mount Estate, Orrell Road from Pemberton to Orrell Post and all roads off Orrell Road, the entire Shelley Drive estate, and the Chapel Street area in Pemberton, including the Cromford Drive estate. The blue bins will be collected on a monthly basis, not a fortnightly basis as is the case at the moment.

Hospice Charity Night A group of swimmers from the Total Fitness pool in Marus Bridge are running a series of charity events to raise money for Wigan and Leigh Hospice, including a Charity Night at St James Club in Orrell. The Charity Night is being held on Friday 10th December and will effectively be a Christmas Party for those wishing to attend. Amongst the entertainment laid on will be Crawford @ Brown and the Catchafters, there will be a disco, a raffle and a hot pot supper included in the £7.50 ticket price. The team aim to swim the Channel in relay fashion next August, also to raise money for the Hospice.

Musical EveningThe Three Towns Operatic Society will be performing at St Aidan’s Church in Billinge on 16th October 2010 at 7.30pm. The Three Towns – Atherton, Leigh and Tyldesley, in case you’re interested – were formed back in 1968, and will be performing a selection of musical pieces, not just songs and choruses from past Operatic shows, but a mixture of musical delights across a broad section.Rod Dakin, the Society’s conductor points out that “The show will consist of songs that the choir have always wanted to sing, but very often they don’t have time to sing.” Tickets will be priced at £5.00 and this will include light refreshments at the interval. Tickets can be obtained from the wardens at the church or any member of the PCC.


Best of Both WorldsJust recently, I’ve been taken to task by a local couple, who have criticised some of my choices of food reviews. They said, “If you’re looking for good places to eat, why haven’t you been to the Dicconson Arms?”

So, we took the high road up to Appley Bridge to try out the food at this modest looking pub that’s situated on what’s known locally as Dangerous Corner. As far as I can recollect, the pub has always enjoyed a reputation for fairly good pub grub, but it’s been a good few years since we’ve last eaten here so we were interested to find out what had changed.

We walked through the dining room, which has undergone a fairly hefty refurbishment recently and has now a much more modern and airy feel about it, and when we sat down, the waitress immediately drew our attention to the specials board, which consisted solely of fish dishes. She explained that the fish is

delivered daily from Fleetwood, and the contents of the specials board depended on what the chef fancied from the overnight catch.

Hang on a minute! This is a pub! Pub chefs just don’t go to this much trouble to create a menu, do they? So we looked at the menu on offer and that’s when the penny finally dropped! These people are serious about food. The menus are truly creative, carrying the sort of dishes that would bring out an average pub chef out in a cold sweat, and feature produce from the finest of local food producers.

Is there more to this place than meets the eye?

Before very long, my choice of the Smoked Fish Pot with the Greenfield’s Lancashire Cheese Glaze and Toasted Soldiers appeared. This was a wonderful salty, smoky, flaky mix of mackerel, haddock, trout and salmon contained in a ramekin, topped with breadcrumbs and a delicious cheese glaze. The biggest toasted soldiers I’ve even seen were stacked up besides the dish and every one of these crusty soldiers was utilised fully to scrape every last bit of pleasure from this outstanding starter!


Across the table, my partner was also tucking into a sea food dish, but one that contrasted wildly to the Fish Pot. A generous portion of Southport Potted Shrimps along with hollandaise sauce, were perched atop a chunky toasted muffin, and served with fresh spinach. This was a buttery and delicate dish, and the spinach provided a worthy backdrop to the sweet taste of the sauce.

Word of warning here; if you’re one of these people who likes to show your appreciation of exceptionally good food by licking the plate, make sure you wear shinpads to deflect the kick you’ll receive from your dining partner!

Clearly taken by the quality of the fish on offer, my partner tries the Pan Fried Sea Bass fillets as a main course, which is served with sautéed new potatoes, cherry tomatoes and artichokes, with a basil pesto. This colourful contrast was presented beautifully, and the dish was as good as it looked! The sea bass was cooked so delicately, crisping slightly at the edges, and seasoned just enough to bring out the delicate flavours.

I opted for the Roast Pork Fillet wrapped in Woodhall’s Cumbrian ham, with sautéed potatoes, wild mushrooms, spinach and a garlic cream sauce. This consisted of two generous cuts of the most succulent lean pork I’ve tasted in years, an absolutely gorgeous mix of mushrooms and fresh spinach, and cream sauce you’ll want to dive into, it’s that tasty!

Regular readers will know I’ve got a bit of bee in my bonnet about restaurants buying in desserts from suppliers and tarting them up just prior to serving, with a dusting of this and squirt of that. To the customer, it often means that the last impression they have of the place is something that began life at Costco earlier that week.

We were delighted then to discover that the Dicconson Arms, all the desserts are made freshly on the premises. In fact, one of the desserts we ordered, the Dark and White Chocolate Pudding, is actually made whilst you wait.

With the anticipation building during the wait, the dessert arrived with that ‘just out of the oven’ smell, which was topped by the sight of the white chocolate oozing out of the dark pudding, and was topped a third time by the mouth-watering taste! Don’t be

thinking that this sounds too heavy; it’s a light dessert with a beautiful texture.

The other dessert we tried was a fig, walnut and treacle tart. This warm treat, which was rich, sweet and full of walnuts, was served with a heavenly vanilla Fredericks ice cream, along with a plump strawberry, blueberries and a raspberry coulis. It was a sweet and sticky end to a wonderful meal!

Make no mistake, Dicconson Arms provide the finest of fresh food, cooked in an excellent and imaginative fashion and it’s all presented beautifully. Like I said before, the people at this place really are serious about their food, but they show it in an understated way though, there’s none of the food snobbery that you encounter at similar establishments. The place represents the best of both worlds - it’s as comfortable and unpretentious as a pub, with the quality of food you’d travel 50 miles for.

Don’t leave it too long before you pay them a visit and make sure you call ahead first to book a table!

Re-Birth for NCT BranchA group of local parents have joined forces to re-start the Wigan and St Helens Branch of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT). The NCT has been around as a charity for over 50 years and provides national and local support to parents and parents to be, through pregnancy, birth and early parenthood. On a national basis, this charity lobbies for parental rights, research, education e.g. antenatal classes, and support for maternity services, and at local level the groups provide support for new and future parents, as well as information and friendship.

The group were successful in getting a National Lottery grant to support their first year and have already set up have a calendar of events and activities. The next few events will all be held at Billinge Family Church, on Crank Road in Billinge.

The Launch Day is on Saturday 16th October, and consists of a baby fair and fun day! The event is free, and everyone is welcome to come along, bring their kids, enjoy lots of fun and games, and try some of the taster sessions on offer as well as the different stalls. Taster sessions include Jo Jingles and Tumble Tots, both fun classes to get kids active and moving. There will also be stalls offering advice and support to parents from local NHS and council groups as well as Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue,

On Saturday 30th October, the branch are holding a Nearly New sale at Billinge Family Church from 12pm-2pm. NCT Nearly New Sales are a fantastic opportunity for parents to sell their used (and good quality) baby clothes, equipment, toys, maternity clothes etc that they no longer need. In addition to the events mentioned, the group have set up a sensory playgroup, established a lending library for parents, and are planning days out. Speakers will be talking about a range of subjects on the 1st Tuesday of every month, from 8pm at the Billinge Family Church, and the first three speakers will be talking about real nappies, baby slings and hypno-birth. KindertransportNine months prior to the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, almost 10,000 Jewish children were evacuated from Nazi Germany and brought to Britain in a rescue mission known as Kindertransport. This moving drama at Wigan Little Theatre highlights the Kindertransport operation and tells the story of Faith, a Londoner who discovers that her mother, Evelyn, was sent to England when she was nine by her Jewish parents.

Macmillan BoostMembers of the Orrell and Billinge Community Network have agreed to donate the proceeds of their latest coffee morning to the Macmillan appeal, as part of the organisation’s national World’s Biggest Coffee Morning appeal on Friday 24th September. Free SwimA free swim session for dads and kids is being hosted by Ashton Leisure Centre next Saturday (16th October). Lots of toys will be available to play with and the objective of the session is to help to build children’s confidence in the water, and is targeted at children under the age of 5, though their older siblings are also welcome. The session runs from 2pm-3pm at the centre, which is based on Old Road in Ashton.

Polanski in ParboldThe big screen season continues at Parbold Village Hall this month with two Roman Polanski thrillers.

On the 17th October, the attraction is ‘Chinatown’, starring Jack Nicholson, and on 31st October ‘The Ghost’, starring Ewan McGregor, will be shown. Both films are certified 15. Funding FayreIf you belong to a voluntary or community group, you’ll know that belts are being tightened when it comes to funding for your group. Wigan and Leigh have organised a funding fayre for this Wednesday (13th October) at the Museum of Wigan Life in Library Street where you can get advice on funding for your organisation. There will be presentations from Big Lottery, Heritage Lottery Fund, Community Foundation for Greater Manchester and Wigan Council, and there will be various information stands available to visit. Standish FestivalAll roads lead to Standish this week for the village’s popular Arts and Music Festival, which runs until next Saturday (16th October). Highlights include;

Sunday 10th October – A ‘Songs of Praise‘ evening with the choirs of three local churches at St Wilfrid’s Church starting at 6.30pm.

Monday 11th October – ‘Superstitions’ – Reminiscence sessions run by the Heritage Service at Standish Library starting at 10am

Tuesday 12th October - An evening with crime writer Margaret Murphy at Standish Library, starting at 7.15pm.

Friday 15th October – A Swing Extravaganza, with three Wigan youth bands at St Wilfrid’s church, starting at 7.30pm

Saturday 16th October – Festival Finale, with Wigan Youth Band and Wigan Intermediate Schools Band at St Wilfrid’s Church, starting at 7.30pm

Especially for children, there is a Stories and Craft session at Standish Library between 5.30pm and 6.30pm on Thursday 14th, and hot chocolate and cookies will be served. This free event is open to 3-8 year olds and places are limited. There’s also a Padded Bugs craft session at the library next Saturday (16th October) between the hours of 10am-11.30am and this session costs £2 per child. If your idea of holiday paradise is lying on a sun bed by a pool, then Madeira would be wasted on you. Known as the floating garden of the Atlantic, this Portuguese island is situated 450 miles off the coast of Morocco, and enjoys a stable climate all year round, averaging between 18 and 24 degrees.

Madeira’s capital, Funchal is a fascinating place, with an extremely relaxed cosmopolitan feel. Wherever you go, tourists mix easily with the friendly residents, and unlike most capital cities, the crime rate in Funchal is almost zero. There’s a wide variety of cuisine here, with hundreds of restaurants providing al fresco dining from many types of cultures, though thankfully it’s not the type of place where you can get a full English breakfast every ten yards.

A great day out is a trip to Monte, the mountain which overlooks Funchal. Take the modern cable car up to Monte for fabulous views, and you can visit the tropical garden located on the mountain top. Five minutes walk away from the garden is the ancient church of Nossa Senhora do Monte Church, which is worth a quick visit, but then let your hair down on a toboggan ride which takes you part of the way back to Funchal. Originally a fast means of transport down to Funchal for Monte residents back in the 19th century, thousands of tourists every year now make this exciting trip, sliding at high speed on narrow, winding streets, pushed by two men traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat.

The vibrant market in the centre of Funchal is also well worth a visit, but do go early to capture the real flavour of the place. As you make your way round, stallholders will offer you slices of various mouth-watering fruit; you’ll never realise that fruit can taste so good!

There’s plenty to see outside Funchal too! The bus services are excellent and cheap too, but car hire is recommended

to make the best of Madeira. You’ll need to be a confident driver though to negotiate the steep and narrow roads out of Funchal to the motorway above the city.

Walkers will love the island’s levadas, the island’s 2,500 kilometres-long irrigation system dating back to the 16th century, which enable tourists to discover an abundance of unspoilt areas of the island and its

native forest, the Laurissilva. For views that will leave you gasping, you must visit Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley), which is a small village nestling between almost perpendicular mountains in the heart of the island.

A great, and inexpensive, fun day out for families is the brand new aqua park at Santa Cruz, which is

just a 30 minute bus ride from Funchal. The Maderia Theme Park at Santana isn’t a theme park as we know it, but is suitable for families with children of primary school age. Children will also love the numerous trips are on offer from the harbour at Funchal, to see the dolphins, turtles and whales at sea.

Despite visiting at the height of the school holidays though, we never felt that Madeira is overrun with children. Perhaps influenced by the cruise ships that stop off at the island regularly, tourist attractions on this unspoilt island are targeted mainly at the mature, more discerning holidaymaker. Whether by accident or design, this clearly works for Madeira.

Regrets? As the song goes, we had a few, but the biggest was only booking for a single week. To appreciate the beauty of magical Madeira and sister island, Port Santo, you’d need at least ten days. But never mind, at least we can look forward to a return visit to magical Madeira!

Now they have the chance to learn to play in a band at Clive’s Easylearn Rock & Pop school!

At over 70 branches of Clive’s Music School nationwide, children aged between 7-17 spend an hour each week learning how to play guitar, drums, bass guitar or keyboards. The lessons are split into two parts - ‘Easylearn’ and ‘Easyjam’. During the Easylearn session, which lasts 45 minutes, your child, wearing headphones to focus fully on their playing, will be one of just two children taught by a single tutor. All tutors have CRB clearance and there are up to six teaching stations in action at the same time, with each of the tutors focusing on their specialised instrument.

Experience shows that in this sort of an educational environment, children can learn to master an instrument far quicker than they normally do, and they have a lot of enjoyment along the way too! After 45 minutes the headphones come off and the Easyjam session begins! The Easyjam session is 15 minutes of real fun, with tutors guiding their students to work in tandem with everyone else to experience the awesome excitement of playing in a band - right from the very first lesson! Clive’s Easylearn Rock & Pop school are offering Local Life readers a free hour-long taster session at the Saturday morning sessions, which are held at The Grange Community Complex on Highfield Grange Avenue. Bunhead Visit TV’s most extreme science presenter, Dr Bunhead, is visiting Skelmersdale this Saturday (9th October) to host a high-octane science show at the Woodley Park Centre. Dr Bunhead, who has appeared on TV programmes such as Brainiac and Blue Peter, will burn, bash and blast his way through various objects, all in the name of science.

The show begins at 2.30pm and with the help of volunteers, Dr Bunhead will unleash the fire tornado monster, explode hot water bottles, create monster indoor clouds and put on a show full of science mayhem. Suggested donations on entering the show are £4 for children under 12 and £8 for those above 12.

The event is part of the 30th birthday celebrations of the Transcendental Meditation Community’s arrival in Skelmersdale, and proceeds from the event will go to the Transcendental Meditation Young People’s Project, which is aimed at introducing the technique to young people in the North West.

Fallen HeroesSkelmersdale’s Community Choir are hosting a concert for fallen heroes at the Ecumenical Centre in Skelmersdale in November. Diving with SharksLocal girl Suzanne Fallon-De Vares is doing a sponsored swim with a difference next month when she visits Blue Planet Aquarium to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. Along with five others, Suzanne will be diving into the shark infested aquarium and coming face to face with Stingrays, Nurse Sharks, Tiger Sharks and Lemon Sharks (pictured), during a 30 minute session to discover the basics of scuba diving.

Follow in Jack’s tracks and try this superb local walk.A 6½ mile walk that, on clear days, takes in breathtaking views of the North West coastline, the North Wales hills and the Pennies.

You’ll walk up Billinge Beacon, which is the highest point in Merseyside (and of this particular walk) and affectionately known to locals as ‘The Lump’. Look out for the wind turbines off Crosby, Blackpool Tower, the round brick ventilation tunnels that mark the Tontine Tunnel and the wildflower meadow by Winstanley College.

Make sure you pop into the Robin Hood, which has a deserved reputation for great food and the finest real ales, and also extends a warm welcome for four legged friends in the pub’s lounge area. And at the

end of the walk, which takes approximately 3¼ hours, treat yourself to a De Roma ice

cream at their parlour next to Bankes Park!

Bankes Park – Crank RoadPark the car near Bankes Park in Billinge. Follow Beacon Road up the hill until you can go no further. Take the public footpath to the left hand side of the chain link fence and 120 yards later, bear right and then follow the shale path upwards towards the tarmac road.

Walk past the electricity sub-station and directly after the sub-station, turn right and go through the gate into a wooded area. Continue uphill through the wooded area and eventually you will see Billinge Beacon on your right hand side. Once you’ve left the wooded area, turn right and climb the hill up to the Beacon.

Once you have admired the views from the top, walk down the other side of the hill and take the path on your left hand side that heads in the direction of the masts. After the row of conifers on your right hand side, turn right down the overgrown path that runs between the conifers and the chain link fence for 100 yards. Then turn left and follow the path through the farmyard at Beacon House Farm. Turn right just after you pass the farm house and walk 150 yards down the driveway to Crank Road.

Billinge BeaconKnown affectionately by locals as the Billinge Lump, the beacon was the site of one of the Armada Beacons used to send warnings of invasion the length of the country back in the 16th century. The drab building currently on top of the Beacon was erected as a sea mark in the 18th century, even though the sea is 15 miles away. It’s the highest point in Merseyside at 587 feet, and you can apparently see up to 16 counties from this point on a clear day.

Crank Road – Higher PimboTake a left turn and head up Crank Road. Go past the ‘Welcome to Rural Rainford’ sign and follow the road round a left hand bend. Approximately 100 yards past the bend you will see a public footpath sign by a farm gate on the right hand side. Take this path, and 50 yards later branch off to the right. Follow the path along the right hand perimeter of the field for ¼ of a mile.Once you arrive at the gate with a stile on the left hand side, cross the stile and carry straight on down the path. Stay on the path for the next ¼ mile, crossing two further stiles until you reach some concrete steps descending to a dirt track. Go down these steps, cross the dirt track and go straight up some more concrete steps on the opposite side. Once you reach the front gated entrance to Mountains Farm, you’ll come to a crossroads. Take a left turn here.

After 75 yards or so, you’ll come to a fork in the path. Bear right and after 50 yards you’ll come to another fork. Don’t turn right, carry straight on through the middle of the field. Once you’ve crossed the field go through the archway in the hedge and carry straight on down the pathway running to the left of a wooded area called Pimbo Bushes. When you get to the end of this path, you’ll see a gate with lots of barbed wire. Turn left here and follow the path for ¼ mile until you reach a gate. Go over the stile onto the gravel path and turn right into the hamlet of Higher Pimbo.

Higher Pimbo – Robin Hood PubWalk up the path 50 yards and when you reach Higher Barn, take an immediate left. Head up the hill through the centre of the field. Once you’ve gone up an incline you’ll come across a path on your left with a ‘Private

Road’ sign. Carry straight on for 100 yards and you’ll come to a crossroads.

Turn left for 40 yards and then after you’ve passed the hedges, take an immediate right turn. Follow this pathway for 400 yards, take the left fork and 100 yards later you arrive in Newfold, a collection of stone houses centered around a courtyard. Go through the courtyard, bear left and then walk the 100 yards to Oxhouse Road.

Cross Oxhouse Road and take the tarmac path between house numbers 13 and 15. Walk the 250 yards past the playing fields and down an alley until you reach St James Road. Turn right, cross the road and head up the hill. Turn left opposite the Running Horses pub down Sandy Lane. Walk down the hill and the Robin Hood Pub is 400 yards on the left hand side.

Tontine Tunnel ShaftsThese three circular brick shafts were originally built for ventilation purposes when the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway steam trains ran through Tontine Tunnel, and were later capped when steam trains were phased out. The tunnel, which is 0.6 miles long, runs from the Higher Pimbo area to the Lawns Estate off Sandbrook Road in Orrell. Incidentially, it is believed that a mass grave at St James Church in Orrell contains the remains of Irish navvies who died whilst constructing the tunnel.

Robin Hood Pub – LongshawAfter some well-earned refreshments, continue to walk along Sandy Lane, which then bears left and on the right you’ll see the entrance to Orrell Water Park, so cross the road and enter the Water Park.Once in the park, turn right and head towards the bottom of the car park, then take the brown shale path to the left of the notice board at the bottom of the car park. Cross the bridge, and when you reach the play area, take a right turn along a path that runs parallel to the lake. After 300 yards, you’ll reach the sign for Greenslate Water Meadows, so take a left hand fork at this point.

After 100 yards you need to take the path on the left that exits the Water Park into a field. Keep to the left hand side of the field, which runs parallel to a brook. Do not cross the brook at the top of the field, but carry on walking, keeping to the left hand perimeter of the field.

When you reach the end of the field, take the right turn. This is taking you on an open track towards Longshaw. After about 250 yards, take the left fork towards the telephone mast. A little further on, you’ll need to follow the path as it bends 90 degrees to the left. At the end of the field (about 300 yards), take a right turn and then follow that path for a further 300 yards until you reach the road.Take a right turn and then follow the road into Longshaw village.

Longshaw – Bankes ParkTake a left turn up Longshaw Avenue. At the bottom of Longshaw Avenue, the road bends to the right, but carry straight on up the path. At the end of the path, which is muddy in places, turn right onto Longshaw Common, and then immediately left up a similar path. Follow that path for 150 yards, then turn right again and follow the path up to the main road.Turn left onto the main road and follow this road for 500 yards. Just prior to a bus stop on the left, turn right up the pathway adjacent to Christmas Cottage. This winding pathway will eventually bring you out on Oakley Avenue. Turn left and turn left again when you reach Beacon Road and walk up to the Ice Cream Parlour at the top of the road.

See It & Believe It!“You just don’t realise the difference until you see it with your own eyes” enthuses Sean McHugh, who is trying to convince me that there’s a big difference between UPVC gutters and Orrell Roofline’s seamless aluminium gutters.

And Sean’s right - it really is true, there’s a huge difference in the look! The house they had just completed had clean and stylish gutter lines throughout, with no unsightly joins or any of those fiddly plastic clips which are so difficult to clean properly.

Orrell-based Sean, and his business partner, Stephen Shaw, who have over 40 years of roofline experience between them, formed their own company earlier this year because they knew that there was no roofline

company in the immediate area that supplied and fitted aluminium gutters.

These gutters are made to measure to on site by the duo, who use a nifty bit of expensive kit that forms the aluminium gutters to exact specification, eradicating the need to use any joins.

Just about now, I guess that you’re thinking that there must be a catch somewhere in this? It looks better, lasts longer, its maintenance free, so it must be in the price, yes? Well, yes. Obviously you’re going to pay a premium for these aluminium gutters than you would for UPVC ones. Usually it’s around 10-15% more, depending on the quality of the UPVC.

LESS SIXTY, MORE SEXY

Volvos aren’t boxy anymore. The cars that gained the Swedish manufacturer its reputation for displaying all the design flair of an accountancy firm are long gone. The manufacturer’s recent output has shown progressively more stylistic innovation and the latest S60 aims to take the concept of the pretty Volvo to new heights.

Volvos have tended to feel like the safe cars they are when you get them out on the road but with this S60, more emphasis than ever before has been placed on instilling some excitement. The steering ratio is 10 per cent faster than in previous models and the thick steering column is said to amplify the feeling of contact between the driver, the wheels and the road. The suspension is stiffer and was partially developed in the UK, the proud owners of some of Europe’s scabbiest road surfaces, so you can expect a polished performance on that B-road that usually loosens your teeth.

Volvo’s S60 has the compact executive elite in its sights. Steve Walker reports.

The front-wheel-drive layout of the S60 will put it at a disadvantage in the eyes of some keen drivers but Volvo’s all-wheel-drive technology is available with some models and the Four-C active chassis technology is available across the range. This is an active chassis system that uses numerous sensors to monitor the car’s behaviour and adjust the dampers to best cope with the road conditions and the driving style. The driver can also select Comfort, Sport and Advanced modes as required.

The engine line-up is topped by a 3.0-litre straight six petrol engine complete with turbocharger and this 304bhp unit will take the S60 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds. More realistic choices for the target S60 customers are a pair of five-cylinder diesels: the twin-turbo 2.4-litre D5 has 204bhp and the 2.0-litre D3 generates 163bhp for a 9.2 second 0-62mph sprint. Arguably even more impressive is the braking system which can detect an imminent low speed collision and brake automatically.

The cabin is an area where the S60 should be able to lever an advantage over its competitors. The Volvo is simply a bigger car and this car increases rear passenger space even over the previous generation model. Volvo interior design has been impressing for a while and the S60 features brand trademarks like the floating centre stack with storage space behind

while adding more of a sporty flavour with its metallic trim and supportive seating.

Technology features available on the S60 include the ACC Adaptive Cruise Control system that can maintain a set gap to the vehicle in front, a parking assist camera with front and rear sensors and a further camera on the front grille to help the driver see out of bind junctions. The specially developed infotainment system brings the various functions together on a five or seven inch screen mounted high on the dashboard.

The S60 promises low running costs for a car of its size. The D5 diesel engine can return 48mpg which isn’t bad considering the performance it offers while the D3 2.0-litre diesel chips in with 54mpg. It means that the S60 can’t match the best of the BMW engine range for efficiency but has equivalent Audi and Mercedes models in its sights.

Volvo executive cars have usually been safe, reliable and practical but sporty and stylish? Buyers with those as priorities may have felt inclined to look elsewhere. The S60 could be the car to change all that.

When in Rome …As we head towards winter, let’s be honest, the garden tends to take a back seat. People generally think the garden goes to sleep from October to March and there is nothing to be gained from giving any thought as to how we can make the most of our outside space.

In reality, we are writing off a valuable asset for half the year. I have undertaken work this year for many clients who have extended their properties, invariably bringing light and space into their homes with increased views of the garden. It makes sense therefore that the garden should look good all year round.

There are so many ways you can make the garden look appealing during the colder months. Structure, evergreen planting and winter flowering shrubs can all play a part. The shorter days also bring with them the opportunity to use subtle lighting in the garden. Visit www.moonlightdesign.co.uk for some inspiration and remember subtlety is the key. Lighting your garden up like a football pitch is not the desired outcome.

Being a garden designer I take my main holiday later

in the year and this time we are lucky enough to be going on a cruise for the first time. Hubby has always wanted to go on one but wouldn’t splash the cash as they say. So one very cold morning last January I booked the holiday on line with P & O and didn’t tell him for weeks. (Well you have to do these things sometimes!)

The thing is, how do you book day excursions to places like Rome and Florence for someone who won’t queue for anything, doesn’t like heights, finds museums and churches boring and doesn’t like walking up hill! I’ll let you know how it goes …

Experienced Hire Controller Required - WiganMain duties are to include; Dealing with customer enquiries, actioning items “on and off hire”, following up any breakdown / exchange requests, liaising with other depots regarding customer requests, following internal system procedures, ensuring that all customer complaints and queries are handled promptly and efficiently, providing customers and colleagues with product knowledge, data entry of reports onto the in-house system . The ideal candidate will have previous experience of working as a Hire Controller, with knowledge of the hire industry and equipment, excellent customer service skills with good communication and IT skills.
