Facilitating the transition of youth to an independent active life

Edgeryders is a think tank of citizen experts working on a policy document concerning the transition of youth to an independent active life, on behalf of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. It is massively collaborative, distributed, self-selected and experience-based.

Massively collaborative, because it has over 950 participants (and counting). New members come on board at a rate of about 100 a month.

Distributed, because participants don’t share the same physical space. They coordinate their work through an interactive online platform built by the Council of Europe using free software (http://edgeryders.ppa.coe.int).

Self-selected, because European young people don’t need permission to participate: they simply sign up to the platform, pick a task and carry it out. This makes sure that participants are passionate about their participation, and they carry out precisely those tasks that they feel they are good at.

Experience-based, because the emphasis is on sharing personal experience: Edgeryders is all about trying to map what young people are actually doing to complete their transition: where they are investing their time, energy and resources.

A small team of researchers is carrying out ethnographic analysis of the experiences shared on the Edgeryders platform and comparing it to existing European policies that hinge upon the transition of youth.A final report is scheduled for October 2012. The Living on the Edge conference is a chance to look at the first (substantial) batch of evidence and provide input to the final synthesis.

Some preliminary results are:surprisingly many young people seem to be willing to go through considerable hardship in order for their work to be socially useful. A recurring ambition seems to be “get paid to solve the world’s problems, not to make and sell useless stuff.”

There seem to be perceived inconsistencies between policies in different areas. For example, the EU has ambitious targets in terms of the share of the population that completed university education, perceived as driving a better, smoother transition. But financial hardship on public education budgets mean that university means, for many European students, debt, and debt hinders any transition.

The transition of youth is everybody’s problem, and intergenerational, cross-societal dialogue is essential to make sense of it.

Dynamic reporting of the workshops: the Edgeryders community suggestions for policy makersEvery workshop will present the suggestions made by the participants to improve policies and support youth in transition. Emilie Turunen, born 1984 in Jæger-spris, Denmark, has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2009, elected for the Socialist’s People’s Party (SF) in Denmark. She is Vice-President of the GREENS/EFA Group and member of the Committee Internal Market and Consumer Protection, and a substitute member of the Commit-tee on Employment and Social Affairs and the Committee of Economic and Monetary Affairs. She is a member of the Delegations South-East Asia – ASEAN – and Iran. She holds a Bachelor degree (BA) in Social Sciences and Working Life Studies from Roskilde University. Before joining the European Parliament, she was a member of the National Executive and Executive Committee of the

Socialistisk Folkeparti (SF), the National Chair of the youth wing of SF, SFU (2008-2009). She was also active in the social and NGO field, as Coordinator for the Danish Social Forum (2005-2006), and did voluntary work for the Danish NGO, DanChurchAid, in Cambodja, working with the LWF and Cambo-dian Women’s Crisis Centre (CWCC) (2004).

Gianni Pittella was born in Lauria on November 19th, 1958. He is married and he has two sons. He graduated in medicine and surgery and specialised in medicine for legal and insurance purposes. He early became a member of the Young Socialist Party of which he was elected Regional Secretary and member of the National direction. He was elected Municipal Councillor (1979); Member of Regional Council and Member of Regional Executive for training, culture and productive activities (1980). He was member of the executive board of the centre-left party, Democratici di Sinistra (DS). He took responsibility in the DS Party for policies concerning Italians in the World. In 1996 he was elected



deputy at the Italian Parliament and appointed member of the Committee on Environment, Public Works and EU Policies. He has been a member of the Special Committee on Wastes. In 1999 he was elected Member of the European Parliament, reconfirmed for his second term in 2004. During his mandate, he was appointed as EU Standing Rapporteur on Structural Funds and General Rapporteur on the EU Budget procedure. He was President of the Italian Delegation at the Socialist Group at the European Parliament; Member of the Commit-tee on Budgets and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. In 2007 he has been appointed as Rap-porteur on the retail banking sector inquiry in Europe. In 2008, he was elected for his third mandate. In the Committee on Culture, Media, Education, Youth and Sports she works on Europe’s Digital Agenda and the role of culture and new media in the EU´s external actions. In the Committee on International Trade she focuses on intellectual property rights, the free flow of information and the relation between trade and foreign affairs. My talk will focus on my experi-ence of running a Profession (Reality) Development program for soon to be graduates. IDIL MOHAMED

During the “Europe: a future history” session on day 1, Idil will be talking about Meaningful diversity and navigating the different spaces of modern-day social interaction.

I am a political scientist. I am interested in the emergence of state institutions and mechanisms of social organisation. I am particularly interested in the phenomenon of the so called ‘failed states’, especially in the Horn of Africa and the alternative modes of governance in the region. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Relations at the London School of Economics after having graduated with a degree in Social and Political Science from the University of Cambridge. Outside of academia, I am involved in several community projects most of which aim to improve the educational achievement of students from underprivileged social backgrounds and the enhancement of social cohesion within communities.

I will join a session on resilience and later talk about structuring the richness of the Edgeryders mission reports on Making a living.

A sociologist, researching youth and education, employment and science popularisation, bridging the gap between youth and policy makers in existing rigid policy making process. She is also a private entrepreneur, started a private non profit institute for sociological research and science popularisation three years ago.

LUCAS GONZÁLEZ

I will lead the breakout session on Resilience as “a key element of the transition of young people to an independent active life” and beyond: actionable ideas on zero budget, so that we can increase resilience in Europe.

Public health physician, monitoring flu and helping in readiness against flu pandemics. Cooperate with the Hexayurt Project on open tools for fast, cooperative, creative resilience in the face of non-trivial threats. Member of free-software and open-hardware groups locally.

REBECCA COLLINS

I will be joining the Caring For Commons discussion group, and giving a presentation synthesis-ing the Edgeryders project so far.

Youth geographer (and current PhD student) interested in how young people navigate consumption cultures, as well as youth transitions and the ways in which human beings are socialised into specific cultural values and practices; lapsed art historian; occasional painter, life drawer and life model; co-founder of MEND*RS (The Mending Research Symposium) and the UCL Youth Geographies Research Group.

SNEŽANA SAMARDŽIC MARKOVIC

Director General, Democracy at the Council of Europe

During the period of nearly five years in which she served as the Minister of Youth and Sport in the Serbian Government, she focused in particular on the strategic, legisla-tive and budgetary activities of her ministry. In this context, she worked in co-operation with civil society, the municipal and institutional authorities and the media. Before this, she worked for the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on improving relations between neighbouring states and she was the first ever female Deputy Minister of Defence.

NADIA EL-IMAM

Nadia EL-Imam is Creative Director of Edgeryders, at the Social Cohesion Research and Early Warning division of the Council of Europe. As an engineer and designer she is interested in using digital technologies to address complex societal challenges. Before joining the Council of Europe, Nadia held senior creative roles in advertising agencies and did Techno Tarot readings at festivals. She studied Human-Computer Interaction at the Royal Institute of Technology, Cognitive Neuroscience at Karolin-ska Institutet as well as Interactive Art Direction at Hyper Island, in Stockholm Sweden. She has lived in France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, The United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Switzerland, and Kuwait.
