Although this book is written for the practicing clinician, it also looks at central venous access from the patient's perspective. Topics include discussion of practical issues regarding mobility, psychosocial issues and the importance of education, and patient involvement in the selection of intermedi- ate- to long-term central venous access. The layout of this book has been well thought out and reflects the fact that it has been written by an experienced nurse who is still engaged in clinical care. Chapter 1 identifies a CVAD by clarifying the termi- nology that is commonly used by health care professionals. The author then looks at the advantages and disadvantages of each type of device to meet the clinical requirements and individual patient lifestyles. Care and maintenance are dis- cussed in later chapters and incorporate the prevention and management of com- plications. The text is appropriately punc- tuated with clear black-and-white photographs, diagrams, and tables.
