LITERATURE CIRCLES When you work in Literature Circles, you are working as part of a team. It is very important that each member of the team pulls his or her own weight, or else the Literature Circles won’t work. So, make sure you stay on task. Maximum of 4 members in each group. Here is an outline of the responsibilities for each role. These roles will rotate so that each group member will have a different role each time you meet: v DISCUSSION DIRECTOR The role has two tasks. 1. The first is to write a 1 paragraph summary (at least 5 sentences) of the section read. 2. The second is to write 4 questions that the group can discuss. These questions should be open- ended questions, not one word answer questions. ~ For example, “Who is your favorite character so far, and why?” is a good question, but “What is the baby’s name?” is a bad question. v WORD WIZARD This role revolves around vocabulary. The main task is to find 6 unfamiliar or important vocabulary words from the selection. Then, the student will: 1. Write out the word 2. Part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) 3. Definition 4. Write the sentence it was found with the page number ALSO, the Word Wizard is responsible to choose one of the 6 words and create a word card to add to the WORD WALL. v PASSAGE PICKER This role requires a close look at the text. The task for this role is to find 2 interesting paragraphs in the selection and copy them out (include the page number where passage was found). Then, the student needs to write 1 paragraph for each passage explaining why these paragraphs were interesting and important. v CONNECTOR This job is to find connections between the book (reading cycle) and you, and between the book and the wider world. Write 2 paragraphs and cite textual evidence. Consider the list below when you make your connections. Use your own past experiences: - Happenings at school or in the community - Stories in the news / similar events - Other people or problems that you are reminded of ü You will only have 3 class sessions to complete one cycle so please stay on task. ü This project is worth 30 points for each student (10 points for each cycle; 3 cycles) ü Extra credit is given to students who show extra effort in their work.
