“In the tight job market, recent veterans say they are passed over for jobs not because they are unqualified but because they lack …a way to describe their military skills that employers understand.”

“…one of the biggest challenges for returning veterans can be figuring out how to translate skills they’ve gained in the service to civilian jobs. This challenge goes both ways -- employers often need help understanding how veteran skills can benefit their businesses.”

--Huffington Post, Out of War, Out of Luck: For Veterans, Skills Learned In Service Don't

Translate To Employment, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/13/out-of-war-veterans-unemployment_n_848898.html

LinkedIn is not just an online resume database, it’s a place where we can better tell the Navy story and increase awareness of what the Navy does

• We know that veterans have a difficult time educating the civilian world of how their job translates outside of the military

• We can help foster understanding between the civilian and military worlds by describing our own jobs and skill sets in a public forum and participating in discussions about our subject matter expertise

• You can also use LinkedIn to do research and reach-out to people you or your leadership may be meeting with to increase productivity and impact (think: embarks, interviews, etc.)

Hmmm… I wonder if the members if this group do the same type of engineering work I do at my job.

Oh, my Admiral has a meeting with this Captain tomorrow! Perhaps I

should do a little background research to best prep my Admiral.

Don’t forget about privacy and OPSEC! LinkedIn has a messaging service on the site itself (similar to Facebook), so there is no need to provide your personal email address or other contact information.

Be sure to go through your account settings and manually set your “privacy controls” to ensure you only share personal information with people you know well.

As always—don’t connect with people you do not know well. You may initiate conversation via LinkedIn mail when making an introduction, then determine whether you should connect with them, allowing them to see your profile.
