Start Leveraging LinkedIn

Dear Professional: LinkedIn is a huge and powerful network. Currently with 400 million members. Whether you’re looking for clients, or a job, with a half hour per day 3 x per week you can raise your visibility. With 45 minutes per day, 3x per week, you can Get found. Get hired. Get Clients.

As with anything else you’d like to succeed at, and reap rewards from, doing this requires a commitment. If you can commit to this small amount of time per week, LinkedIn allows you to market yourself and your products freely, make valuable business connections, develop new clients. Successfully partner with individuals whom you may never have met. And much more.

The following are tips I, along with other experts and my workshop attendees, consistently and successfully use to leverage LinkedIn on a daily basis. Jean L. Serio, CPC

1. Consistently post to your home page.

Your LinkedIn ‘Home’ Page allows you to post updates numerous times per day. Along with each update, you can post an attachment. For example - a link to a blog, article, resource, infographic, photo. Here are 7 tips for unique posts your connections will appreciate:

• Share a useful business tip – create a ‘tip of the day’.• Provide info on a technique you successfully use• Share an excerpt from an industry article, white-

paper, PDF on other relevant business info along witha link to it.

• Provide them a business resource your connections can immediately use

• Add a link to a newsletter• Connect to a comment on your Facebook or Twitter

page• Provide a link to a business related infographic

2. Become a Go-To Resource

Regularly post valuable Resources to your ‘Home’ page. This may surprise you but your connections will love good resources which help them run their business. Share good resources you commonly use or those referred to you by other connections or clients whom you know and trust.

Here’s a few examples:

• IT info• Apps• Software• Website and/or blog apps and software• Marketing and Social resources• Graphics and Infographics• Ebooks, Audios, Videos• Other useful tools

3. Pass on Industry Articles and Information

Regularly sharing industry articles and related information shows your connections and followers you are on top of your game. Share this info either on your ‘Home’ page or within Groups you are a member of.

Post a statement in your ‘Home’ page update box then add the link to the info you are sharing. Click the link to the info to insure it works properly. Then click ‘share’.

Or, use this info to start a discussion on a LinkedIn Group.

If the link sends readers to your website, offer a free ebook, video or audio, whitepaper, to further entice them.

Ask them to ‘like’ and/or ‘share’ the info. Ask them to ‘follow’ you.

4. Join Groups There are two types of groups you should join.1. Those related to your area of expertise.2. Those which include potential clients.Joining Tips:

•Join groups with 10K+ members to get the most value/exposure.•Join several groups where it’s likely you will find potential clients.•Groups provide you the ability to listen to what potential clients are saying•Choose groups in which you’ll discover current news from others in your industry, strategies which can give you and/or your biz a competitive advantage, for example.•Join specific groups which can provide info on new ideas for client prospecting, selling, launching new products or a business and more.

With regular group exposure, you slowly begin raising your visibility. You’ll receive more requests to connect, more followers. In short, you reach out to a wider audience of professionals who would hire you.

5. Regularly Participate in Groups

Fact: When joining a group, to receive the most value from it, you must become a regular contributor. This means starting discussions and/or commenting and posting on discussions others have started. Do this at least 3x per week and you will slowly become known as an authority in your niche or industry.

Jenny Foss, career and resume expert says, “The benefit of active participation (in groups) is you will be seen as someone who is passionate,

knowledgeable and engaged in your field”. • Create valuable discussions, add useful and/or industry related info.• Comment on other’s discussions, thank others when they comment on yours.• Post promotions to the ‘promotions’ pages.• Send emails to ‘connect’ with various members.• Ask a question to start up a discussion; these can turn into months long

postings.

6. Check ‘Who’s Viewed Your Profile’ and Connect

At the top of your ‘Home’ page, LinkedIn notes how many times your Profile has been viewed in the past 10-15 days.

If you are a ‘Premium’ member, click on the link and you’ll see who has viewed your Profile over the past 90 days. Not a Premium member? Hover over the flag at the top of your Profile page (on the far right side beyond the search bar). LinkedIn posts messages to let you know who viewed your profile.

Check the profiles of these individuals. And send a friendly yet professional, email noting you’ve noticed they ‘viewed your profile’. Provide a few lines describing your expertise; invite them to call or email you; send them a free report. If they connect, this allows them to view your comments and posts on a daily basis. In short, it allows them to get to know you better. And expands your opportunities to connect with potential clients and/or get hired.

7. Endorse a Connection.

Endorsements allow people to provide what amounts to a recommen-dation of their skills. Any connection can visit the Profile page of a first degree connection and endorse that individual for as many skills as they feel comfortable with. It’s quick and easy. Says Brad Mauney, Group Product Manager at LinkedIn, “While a single endorsement taken in isolation may not provide a ton of insight, if someone is endorsed for a single skill 99 times, that becomes a very powerful way to understand their key strengths and the strength of their network.” Endorsing others you know, and/or work with, is a great way to show your appreciation of their skills and build relationships. It also goes a long way to having others endorse you in return. Plus your photo is added to the Profile Page of individuals whom you endorse. NOTE: Beware of endorsing a member for a skill not listed on their page. Email and tell them what you’d like to endorse them for. They may not want to be known for that particular skill.

8. Thank Those Who Endorse or Recommend You.

LinkedIn is all about connections and relationships. That said, it’s important to acknowledge and thank those who take time to endorse or recommend you.

Send a message via LinkedIn once you’re notified of the endorsement or recommendation. LinkedIn stats show approximately 90% of all emails, sent to members via their system, do get opened.

Make it a friendly, but professional, message. Ask the individual how you can help them, in return. Include an article or info related to their unique industry, a whitepaper, for example, as thanks.

9. Follow and Connect With Influencers

Joff Redfern, LinkedIn’s VP of mobile, says “"If you don’t follow any LinkedIn Influencers, you should.” They are some of the top influencers in the world, writing on a variety of topics, he says. (http://www.businessinsider.com/top-linkedin-tip-2014-6).

There are hundreds of thousands of Influencers with unique expertise in thousands of markets and industries. Likely one of which matches your own. And LinkedIn Influencers are powerful people.

Set alerts to receive info on your chosen Influencer’s posts not only to keep up with this individual, but to better help you keep up with your industry. Join 1 or 2 LinkedIn Groups they belong to. Comment on their Pulse and Group articles and start a conversation. Respond with valuable info and comments which add to the conversation. Do this enough, and in time they will know you and want to connect or you can send an invite to them with the likelihood it will be accepted. All the while raising your visibility.

NOTE: Remember – when an influencer actually becomes a connection, they generally have a 5 and 6 figure connection number, meaning your connections will expand immediately. Perhaps into the billions with just that one influencer added to your connection base.

10. Grow your network

One of the top benefits, of using LinkedIn, is the ability to make connections. When you join groups, start discussions and regularly comment, you open yourself up to a huge world of business professionals. Individuals who may hire you, whose expertise you may require. Pros who may also bring value to your own connections and with whom you may eventually associate on projects. Not to mention HR Pros and recruiters.

Tips for gathering new connections:

• Ask for in introduction to a first connection of your connections (these would be your 2nd connections. These might be individuals you may have no other way of connecting with, or have otherwise met; but who may be the perfect buyer for your service or product. Who could hire you for a job or joint venture with you.

• Upload your own contacts and send each a ‘Let’s Connect’ message. • Connect with those you know on LinkedIn Groups or may be referred to.• Ask members of local business groups to connect.• Ask industry members or leaders you know, or associate with, to connect.• Post a ‘Let’s Connect’ message to several of Google+ Circles.

Note: Add your LinkedIn Vanity URL to your business cards to make it easy to connect.
