Do You Make a Difference? Many years ago I was with one of my daughters as she completed a lengthy program in the wilderness to helpher deal more effectively with some of her teenage dilemmas. The last thing the counselor at the wildernesscamp said to her was, Remember at all times that what you think and what you do affects other people. This

is true even beyond the impact we have on our friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. I believe that weimpact all of humanity.

In Power vs. Force, Dr. David Hawkins writes: In this interconnected universe, every improvement we makein our private world improves the world at large for everyone. We all float on the collective level ofconsciousness of mankind, so that any increment we add comes back to us. We all add to our commonbuoyancy by our efforts to benefit life. It is a scientific fact that what is good for you is good for me. Dr.Hawkins has backed up his remarks and conclusions with 29 years of hard research. Ill briefly summarizesome of these conclusions and how they relate to the impact you have on others when youre connected toSource.

In essence, every single person as well as large groups of people can be calibrated for their energy levels.Generally speaking, low-energy people cannot distinguish truth from falsehood. They can be told how tothink, whom to hate, whom to kill; and they can be herded into a group-think mentality based on such trivial

details as what side of the river they were born on, what their parents and their grandparents believed, theshape of their eyes, and hundreds of other factors having to do with appearance and total identification withtheir material world. Hawkins tells us that approximately 87 percent of humanity calibrates at a collectiveenergy level that weakens them. The higher up the ladder of frequency vibration, the fewer people there are inthose high levels. The highest levels are represented by the truly great persons who originated spiritualpatterns that multitudes have followed throughout the ages. Theyre associated with divinity, and they set inmotion attractor energy fields that influence all of humankind.

Just below the energy level of pure enlightenment are the energy levels associated with the experiencedesignated as transcendence, self-realization, or God consciousness. Heres where those who are called saintly

reside. Just below this level is the place of pure joy, and the hallmark of this state is compassion. Those whoattain this level have more of a desire to use their consciousness for the benefit of life itself rather than forparticular individuals.

Below these supremely high levels, which few ever attain in a permanent way, are the levels of unconditionallove, kindness, and acceptance of everyone. Below the levels of energy that strengthen us are the low energylevels of anger, fear, grief, apathy, guilt, hatred, judgment, and shameall of which weaken and impact us insuch a way as to inhibit our connection to the universal energy level of Source.

What Id like you to do here is take a leap of faith with me, while I present a few of the conclusions that Dr.Hawkins came to in his second book, called The Eye of the I. Through his precise kinesiological testing fortruth versus falsehood, hes calibrated the approximate number of people whose energy is at or below the levelthat weakens. Id like you to consider his findings and conclusions relative to your impact on civilization. Dr.

Hawkins suggests that its crucial for each of us to be aware of the significance of raising our frequency ofvibration to the level where we begin to match up with the energy of the universal Source.

people counterbalance the negative effect of low-energy people. But it doesnt happen on a one-to-one basisbecause of that 87 percent of humanity thats in the lower weakening frequencies. One person connected Oneof the most fascinating aspects of this line of research is the idea of counterbalancing. High-energy to Sourcecan have an enormous impact on many people in the lower energy patterns. The higher up the scale you movetoward actually being the light of enlightenment and knowing God consciousness, the more negativelyvibrating energies you can counterbalance. Here are some fascinating figures from Dr. Hawkinss research foryou to contemplate as you review the impact you can have on humanity simply by being on the higher rungsof the ladder:

One individual who lives and vibrates to the energy of optimism and a willingness to be nonjudgmental ofothers will counterbalance the negativity of 90,000 individuals who calibrate at the lower weakeninglevels.

One individual who lives and vibrates to the energy of pure love and reverence for all of life willcounterbalance the negativity of 750,000 individuals who calibrate at the lower weakening levels.

One individual who lives and vibrates to the energy of illumination, bliss, and infinite peace willcounterbalance the negativity of 10 million people who calibrate at the lower weakening levels.

One individual who lives and vibrates to the energy of grace, pure spirit beyond the body, in a world ofcomplete oneness, will counterbalance the negativity of 70 million people who calibrate at the lowerweakening levels.

The implications of these figures are immense for discovering ways of improving human consciousness. Byraising your own frequency of vibration only slightly to a place where you regularly practice kindness, love, and receptivity, and where you see beauty and the endless potential of good in others as well as yourself, youcounterbalance 90,000 people somewhere on this planet who are living in the low-energy levels of shame, anger, hatred, guilt, despair, and depression.

Consider the importance of becoming aware of the impact you have on others, and remind yourself that byraising your own energy level to a place where youre in harmony with Source, you become an instrument, or achannel, of peace. This works everywhere, so be a part of the counterbalance to the human negativity youencounter in your life. As Mahatma Gandhi said: We must be the change, we wish to see in the world.

    What's Next?Suhair

In business, as in life, it pays to identify trends, to look ahead and make changes before you toobecome a victim to a change

The simple truth is that successful business leaders - from Cornelius Vanderbilt to Steve Jobs -used a simple habit to make themselves outrageously successful.

Vanderbilt started in steamships, first regional and then ocean going. When railroads came to thiscountry, he sold his ships and put his money in trains and track. Then when railroads becameoverbuilt, he shifted his focus to oil - and made billions in the process. One of Steve Jobs' early successes was the lowly desktop Mac that looked like a bulky toasteroven. Apple's desktops helped it grow. Then a shift to iPhone and iPad helped it take off andbecome one of the most successful companies ever

Both Vanderbilt and Jobs used one simple habit to keep their companies on the forefront andgrowing. They asked themselves the following two questionsThey asked themselves, "What's next? What do customers want and need and how can I give it tothem?"

    oooooooo

It doesnt matter what business youre in its changing. And you can either be a leader orbe left in the dust.

    The Wedding Passbook

Monica married Hitesh this day. At the end of the wedding party, Monicas mother gave her a newlyopened bank saving passbook with an initial deposit amount of Rs.1000 and said:. Monica, takethis passbook. Keep it as a record of your marriage life. When theres something happy andmemorable happened in your new life, put some money in. Write down what its about next to the

line. The more memorable the event is, the more money you can put in. Ive done the first one foryou today. Do the others with Hitesh. When you look back after years, you can know how muchhappiness youve had. Monica shared this with Hitesh when getting home. They both thought itwas a great idea and were anxious to know when the second deposit can be made. This was whatthey did after certain time:

7 Feb: Rs.100, first birthday celebration for Hitesh after marriage1 Mar: Rs.300, salary raise for Monica20 Mar: Rs.200, vacation trip to Bali15 Apr: Rs.2000, Monica got pregnant1 Jun: Rs.1000, Hitesh got promotedand so on...

However, after years, they started fighting and arguing over trivial things. They didnt talk much. They regretted that they had married the nastiest people in the world.... no more love. One dayMonica talked to her mother: Mom, we cant stand each other anymore. So, we agreed to divorce.I cant imagine how I decided to marry this guy!!!

Mother: Sure, girl, thats no big deal. Just do whatever you want if you really cant stand it. Butbefore that, do one thing first. Remember the saving passbook I gave you on your wedding day?Take out all money and spend it first. You shouldnt keep any record of such a poor marriage.

Monica thought it was right. So she went to the bank, waiting at the queue to cancel the account. While she was waiting, she took a look at the passbook records. She looked, and looked again andagain. The memories of all the previous joy and happiness started pouring in. Her eyes were filled

with tears. Abruptly, she returned home, handed over the passbook to Hitesh and asked him to

spend the money before getting divorce. The next day, Hitesh gave the passbook back to Monica. She found a new deposit of Rs.5000. And a line next to the record: This is the day I noticed howmuch Ive loved you thru out all these years. How much happiness you had brought me. Theyhugged and cried, putting the passbook safely into its place.

Do you know how much money they had saved when they retired? Could be quite a lot!. However, the money did not matter to them anymore, after they had gone thru all the joyful years in their life

A fairly large gathering of Electrical Engineers belonging to diverse age groups retired, still in-service and budding had congregated at Kannur on 11.12.2012 to pay their homage to thememory of late Er. C.M.Damodaran, who had left us for the heavenly abode on 05.12.2011.

They had undertaken to travel from places as far as Kasaragod in the north andThiruvananthapuram in the south. The function was jointly hosted by the KSEB EngineersAssociation and the Senior Engineers Forum.

Senior students from the Engineering colleges at Cheemeni, Payyanur, Chemberi, Kannur andKasaragod participated in the keenly fought Quiz contest. S/s Aswin and Tony Paul from the LBSCollege of Engineering, Kasaragod lifted the Winners Trophy in the Engineers Quiz 2012. Inaddition to the individual prizes for the winners and runners-up there were trophies for their almamater also. The prizes were donated by the family of late Er. C M Damodaran. The studentsreceived a copy each of the Engineers Handbook, the prestigious publication of the EngineersAssociation.

Prof.M.K.Radhakrishnan, who summed up the performances, praised Er V.P.Soman for thestructure and contents of the questions but wondered whether the questions were not tougher thanthose in the last year.

It was a memorable reunion for all the visitors who found time to exchange pleasantries with oldacquaintances. Two senior Engineers who rode an auto from the Railway Station to the hall weresurprised when the friendly driver refused to accept any payment from the gray-haired delegates. This made them recall CMD, who had always been a perfect host and spared no pains in lookingafter their comfort on their earlier visits to Kannur.

Dr.K.P.Mohandas, Dean, MES College of Engineering, Kuttippuram spoke on EnergyConservation. Observing that Keralites were reluctant to pursue or listen to Energy Conservation,he listed out simple steps for saving energy and made a passionate appeal to adopt urgentmeasures for the survival of mankind and the planet. (The media extensively quoted manthras fromhis address the next day.)

The theme for the day was SUSTAINABLE ENERGY FOR ALL- a year-end evaluation of theobjectives and accomplishments of the United Nations initiative. Prof.V.K.Damodaran, who leadsthe NGO, INGCORE, - making an impact in several African and Asian countries, - explained theroad map for achieving the UN objectives. The various options of renewable energy wereexhaustively examined in his lecture with the help of case studies. He recalled how Er. CMDamodaran showed commitment and leadership in meeting the electricity needs of north Malabara few years ago, and how he is a role model for the KSEB job aspirants. The scholarly presentationwas listened to in rapt attention.

Three senior Engineers were honored at the function for their pursuit of distinct hobbies. Er.Raghavan Azhicode is an accomplished poet and recited a poem on CMD. Er.C.Mohandas studied

quantum mechanics meticulously and shared his knowledge on the Beginning and Evolution of theUniverse with the Forum members through a series of lectures last year. Er. P. Sreedharan ispursuing painting as a hobby and made a portrait of CMD which was presented to Er. Rajesh, sonof CMD.

Family members of Er.CM Damodaran attended the function. There were a few guests who camein to the hall casually out of curiosity, listened for a while, and were impressed by the level ofdissertations and remained till the end. The dignified ambience and the arrangements made for theconduct of the quiz and seminar were praiseworthy.

Senior Engineers, Kannur express their hearty thanks to all those who made the eventmemorable.

    MURPHYS LAW

Edward A. Murphy Jr., born 1917 was one of the Engineers on the Rocket sled experimentsconducted by US Air Force (Project MX981) in 1949. One experiment involved a set of 16accelerometers mounted on different parts of the body to measure human acceleration tolerance. There were two ways in which each sensor could be glued to its mount.Of course, somebody managed to install all sixteen the wrong way around.

    MURPHYS LAW

If there are two or more ways of doing something, and one of those ways can result in acatastrophe, then someone will do it that way.

MURPHYS LAW TWOIf there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage willbe the first one to go wrong.

MURPHYS LAW THREEIf anything cannot go wrong, it will anyway.

    MURPHYS LAW FOUR

If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which something can go wrong, and try tocircumvent them, a fifth way, totally unprepared for, will develop.

MURPHYS LAW FIVELeft to themselves, things always tend to go from bad to worse.

MURPHYS LAW SIXNature always sides with the hidden law.

MURPHYS LAW SEVENIn nature nothing is ever right. Therefore, if everything is going right, some thing is wrong.

MURPHYS LAW EIGHTIt is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.

Three red marblesBy W. E. Petersen

This story first appeared in the October 1975Ensign Magazine

One day Mr. Miller was bagging some early potatoes for me. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone andfeature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprising a basket of freshly picked green peas.

I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamedpeas and new potatoes.

Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller and the ragged boynext to me.

"Hello Barry, how are you today?"

"H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas ... sure look good."

"They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?"

    "Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time."

"Good. Anything I can help you with?"

"No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas."

"Would you like to take some home?"

"No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with."

"Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?"

"All I got's my prize marble here."

"Is that right? Let me see it."

"Here 'tis. She's a dandy.""I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one likethis at home?"

    "Not zackley ... but almost."

"Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble."

    "Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller."

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me. With a smile she said, "There are twoother boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain withthem for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and theyalways do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a

green marble or an orange one, perhaps."I left the stand smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado but I neverforgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some oldfriends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having hisviewing that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them.

Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whateverwords of comfort we could. Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and theother two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts ... all very professional looking.

They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket. Each of the young

men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light

blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm handover the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and mentioned the story she had told me about themarbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket. "Those three young menwho just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim 'traded'them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size ... they came to pay their debt."

"We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world," she confided, "but right now, Jim would considerhimself the richest man in Idaho."

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband.

Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles. (Contributed by: SUHAIR)SAGE ADVICE

Would you like to take my bet?

An elderly woman walked into the Royal Bank of Canada one morning with a purse full of money.

She wanted to open a savings account and insisted on talking to the president of the Bank

because, she said, she had a lot of money. After many lengthy discussions (after all, the client is always right) an employee took the elderlywoman to the president's office. The president of the Bank asked her how much she wanted todeposit. She placed her purse on his desk and replied, '$165,000'. The president was curious andasked her how she had been able to save so much money

The elderly woman replied that she made betsThe president was surprised and asked, 'What kind of bets?'The elderly woman replied, 'Well, I bet you $25,000 that your testicles are square.'The president started to laugh and told the woman that it was impossible to win a bet like that.

The woman never batted an eye. She just looked at the president and said, 'Would you like to takemy bet?''Certainly', replied the president. 'I bet you $25,000 that my testicles are not square.''Done', the elderly woman answered. 'But given the amount of money involved, if you don't mind I

would like to come back at 10 ' clock tomorrow morning with my lawyer as a witness.' 'No problem',said the president of the Bank confidently.

That night, the president became very nervous about the bet and spent a long time in front of themirror examining his testicles, turning them this way and that, checking them over again and againuntil he was positive that no one could consider his testicles as square and reassuring himself thatthere was no way he could lose the bet.

The next morning at exactly 10 o'clock the elderly woman arrived at the president's office with herlawyer and acknowledged the $25,000 bet made the day before that the president's testicles weresquare.

The president confirmed that the bet was the same as the one made the day before. Then theelderly woman asked him to drop his pants so that she and her lawyer could see clearly. The president was happy to obligeThe elderly woman came closer so she could see better and asked the president if she could touchthem. 'Of course', said the president. 'Given the amount of money involved, you should be 100%sure.'

The elderly woman did so with a little smile. Suddenly the president noticed that the lawyer wasbanging his head against the wall. He asked the elderly woman why he was doing that and shereplied, 'Oh, it's probably because I bet him $100,000 that around 10 o'clock in the morning I wouldbe holding the balls of the President of the Royal Bank

    Life of Pi

Cast:Tabu, Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan Director: Ang Lee

    Movie Review: Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV

In Life Of Pi, a 3D screen adaptation of Yann Mortels what was widely believed to be an

impossible-to-film novel, director Ang Lee, at the top of his game, brings all his expertise to bearupon the epic and surreal tale of a boys disaster-propelled journey to adulthood. The result is out

    of this world.

It is a hauntingly attractive film that, like the fine book it is based on, dwells upon questions of

human existence and mans tangled relationship with God, Nature and beasts of the animal

kingdom in a way that few potential blockbusters ever do, with ease and simplicity.

Like Richard Parker, the Bengal tiger with a human name in whose predatory eyes the young

protagonist looks for an innate connection with animals, Life of Pihas a soul. Precocious but

introverted teenager Piscine Molitor Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma) is stranded in the rough waters ofthe Pacific Ocean in a lifeboat and a hastily rigged-up raft after a Japanese freighter capsizes in a

    fierce storm.

He is the only human survivor of the shipwreck. Pis entire family agnostic Puducherry

zookeeper-dad (Adil Hussain), doting mom (Tabu) and elder brother (Ayan Khan/Vibish

    Sivakumar) have perished

Left to his own devices in frightening circumstances, the boy learns the hard way to deal with every

adversity thrown at him by the elements, a ferocious tiger that needs constant feeding, and his

unshakeable love of God that has made him a Hindu, Christian and Muslim rolled into one.

Life of Pioffers no closure in the end, the audience is not even sure whether the incredible story

that the adult Pi (Irrfan Khan), sitting in his Montreal home, narrates to the writer (Rafe Spall)

actually happened exactly quite in the way that he recollects it.

Life of Pi, is a riveting odyssey of human fortitude and faith that never fails to grip. It is entertaining

    and uplifting.

Lees delightfully inventive touches to the incredible fantasy-adventure imparts a breath taking

enchantment to what is essentially a simple allegory about life, religion and survival in hostile

    circumstances.

    OPINION

I had the opportunity to attend the CMD memorial function at Kannur last week. It was a befittingfunction to remember Er C M D. I congratulate Kannur Unit for arranging such a seminar. The Quiz

was of very good standard and well conducted.Prof Mohandas, familiar to all of us in Kozhikode, made a good presentation to brush up ourEnergy Conservation thoughts. The talk by Er V.K. Damodaran was really a guide to the presentstatus of Non Conventional Energy in the world power scenario. Thank you very much.

A man asked his father-in-law, "Many people praised you for a successful marriage. Could you

please share with me your secret?"

The father-in-law answered in a smile, "Never criticize your wife for her short-comings or when

she does something wrong. Always bear in mind that because of her short-comings and

weaknesses, she could not find a better husband than you.

A lady and her millionaire husband visited their construction site.

A worker who wore a helmet saw her and shouted, "Hi, Emily! Remember me? We used to date

in the secondary school." On the way home, her millionaire husband teased her, "Luckily you

married me. Otherwise you will be the wife of a construction worker." She answered ,"You

should appreciate that you married me. Otherwise, he will be the millionaire and not you."

    TIPS ON INVESTMENTS IN SHARES-CXVknc

The year 2012 has come to an end. It is appropriate now to make a review of happenings in theshare markets during 2012.High interest rates, slowing growth, sticky inflation, policy paralysis ofthe Govt., high levels of Fiscal deficit and current account deficit and perception impactingevents like 2G and coal gate scams were impacting the markets at the dawn of 2012. All thesecomponents were not at all desirable for the markets to make any decent performance. FIIinvestments were also not forthcoming during the initial months of 2012. All were expecting adoomed market. However what happened during the course of 2012 was contrary toexpectations.

The year ended with a strong positive trend. Compared to 2011 the equities gained much. Thesensex gained 25% and Nifty 27% during 2012.It was midcap stocks that stole the lime light bygaining 37%. The FIIs invested an amount of $24 billion this year whereas their investment in2011 was net sale of $358 millions. The reform measures announced by the Govt. in financialsectors, like allowing FIIs to invest more in Insurance and aviation sectors and decisions to allowforeign investments in retail sectors also helped equities to gain .The deferring of action under

GAAR was the main boost for FIIs to invest in our country.

The equities are thus on a strong footing at the dawn of 2013. The GDP growth rate hasbottomed out at 5.3% and now it is on the rising path. In the coming 2 to 3 years chances arethat India will be doing well ,growth-wise. The major drawback is the depreciation of rupeeagainst $. So the experts are expecting the coming year good for our markets.

During December 2012, the sensex varied between 19242 and 19487 and the nifty between 5848and 5931. Most of the days the markets were volatile moving in the range mentioned. Theresistances for sensex are at 19450 and 19612. The supports are at 19000, 18900 and 18800.A

strong close above 19600 can take the index to 20035.Only a fall below 18450 will turn themedium term trend negative. Similarly the supports for nifty are at 5800 and then at 5750.Astrong up move above 5965will reinforce bullish momentum to nifty and will take the index to6100 level. A decline below 5700 will indicate medium term trend is losing momentum and thenthe Nifty may decline to 5600. In the absence of a strong bullish trend the Nifty may tradesideways in the range 5600 and 5950.

WISHING ALL READERS A VERY PROSPEROUS

    AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR
