ADMINISTRATION
Sevier County EMS Committee Recommends LifeNet, Inc.
On May 9th, the EMS Committee for Sevier County recommended that the County’s ambulance contract be awarded to LifeNet. Unfortunately, the County postponed acting on the recommendation pending a legal review.
In February, 2005, Sevier County’s ambulance provider Arkansas Emergency Transport discontinued operations and was purchased by Southwest EMS. As a part of the purchase Southwest EMS assumed that the County would allow AET’s contract to be assigned.
As it turned out, the County elected not to assign the current ambulance contract to Southwest and instead formed a committee to look at their options.
During March of 2005, LifeNet submitted to the Quorum Court a proposal for providing ambulance service. Along with us, Howard County Ambulance Service and Southwest EMS have expressed an interest in providing the service.
Still at issue is whether or not the County has the right to not to assign the existing contract to Southwest. Normally, contracts of this type cannot be transferred (sold) without the governing bodies permission.
The County will address the issue again during the June meeting of the Court. Stay tuned.
LifeNet Celebrates National EMS Week - May 15-May 21, 2005
Emergency Medical Services Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor to the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of the medical “front-line.”
LifeNet will be honoring EMS, FRO’s, Fire Departments, and law enforcement with their annual BBQ dinner in Red River County, and the Fish Fry in Texarkana during this week.

LifeNet Gears Up For Electronic Patient Care Reporting
As part of technology evolution and quite simply, a better way to do things, LifeNet has begun its journey toward electronic patient care reporting. Currently field providers complete a paper chart on each patient encounter. This traditional method is filed with inherent problems. The problems typically encountered with paper charting are legibility, missing information or completeness, author individuality, delays from outlying areas in getting the charts to the business office, and storage.
LifeNet chose PocketPCR as the electronic platform to use for electronic care reports. PocketPCR, (PPCR) a Zoll product, is a part of the current suite of products that LifeNet uses in its day-to-day operations. LifeNet uses the Dispatch, Billing, and Code Review modules of the Zoll data System. Adding PPCR is the next logical component in completing the process.
PocketPCR turns any compatible PDA into a powerful tool for increasing efficiency and accuracy in field data collection. Using affordable Pocket PC devices, Pocket PCR provides the operational efficiency and data quality benefits associated with electronic patient care reporting. Sending and receiving data wirelessly or through a serial connection enables the user to get the patient information to the business office quickly and efficiently.
From the field user standpoint, PocketPCR makes data entry simple and intuitive. The “search” function makes it easy for crews to find patient information in the Billing database. PPCR uses easy-to-navigate interface uses intuitive commands and terminology specially tailored to the EMS industry. Where manual data entry is required, PPCR leads you through the process with groups of screens called Wizards. A Wizard leads you from screen to screen and highlights buttons in yellow to suggest which action to take next. When an entire list is highlighted, selecting an item from the list automatically leads you to another screen.
The PocketPCR Task Force is currently engaged in setting up the system and tailoring it to the needs of the system. We anticipate that the system will be up and running by mid-summer.

LifeNet’s Medical Advisory Committee Takes the Next Step in Community Cardiac Care
During the May 3rd, LifeNet Medical Advisory Committee meeting LifeNet’s Medical Director, Dr. Matt Young and Dr. Rachel Keilin discussed recent significant 12-lead findings of important events, which lead to decreased intervention time for patients in the hospital. Each case identified how having access to 12-leads in the field has improved the quickness of each of the hospital’s response time in the cardiac patient. By improving their response, they are saving valuable heart muscle and reducing patient mortality.
In a move to improve the system, LifeNet proposed an Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) Acuity plan that will alert the receiving facility of the severity or seriousness of the incoming cardiac patient. Modeled after the Trauma Level System, the ACS Acuity index identifies a “Level 1” ACS patient as an active heart attack while Levels 2 and 3 are less severe, however warranting concern and further evaluation.
Coordinating this effort with the receiving facilities will positively impact in the quality of cardiac care in the community. The Medical Advisory Committee meets again on July 13th and they believe that the ACS Acuity plan will be accepted and implemented by the community.
