My hair is super dry. What’s up with that?

How do I know which products will make my hair soft & moisturized?

These natural hair products are breaking my bank. Are they really all that much better?

HELP!

Seriously, how “natural” are these natural hair products, anyway??

Top 4 Most (Un)Wanted Ingredients

• Sulfates• Parabens• Mineral Oil/Petroletums• Alcohols

Page 11: Let's Talk Natural Hair Products!

Sulfates

What they are: Chemical that creates an overabundance of suds to make you “feel” like your thoroughly cleansing your hair.

Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Chloride, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Xylenesulfonate, Cocamide Mea, Cassia Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract, Panthenol, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Citric Acid, Dimethiconol, Fragrance, Sodium Benzoate.

How to spot them: ends with “sulfate” – e.g. Sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate

Why they’re bad: Dries the hair. Most shampoos contain harsh, drying sulfates that are extremely damaging for curly hair, and causes it to become brittle and break.

Page 12: Let's Talk Natural Hair Products!

Parabens

What they are: Chemicals used as preservatives, and that’s why they are found in so many products. They are used to prevent bacteria, yeast and mold, are widely available, and cost very little to manufacture and use.

water, paraffinum liquidum, glycerin, caprylic/capric triglyceride, petrolatum, dimethicone, cetyl alcohol, lanolin, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, carbomer, parfum, tocopheryl acetate, benzophenone-3, xanthan gum, disodium EDTA, propylparaben, potassium hydroxide, BHT, pheoxyethanol, methylparaben, benzyl salicylate, hexyl cinnamal, hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde, limonene

How to spot them: Usually show up as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, butylparaben and benzylparaben

Why they’re bad: Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers.

Mineral Oil/Petrolatums

What it is: Cheap, synthetic oil or grease added to many beauty products. Mineral oil is the leftover liquid from the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. Petrolatums are basically petroleum jelly (aka Vaseline).

water, parafinium liquidum, glycerin, triethanolamine, fragrance, carbomer, PEG-12 dimethicone, dipropylene glycol, silk amino acids, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, avocado oil, shea butter, sweet almond oil, jojoba seed oil, macademia seed oil, oleth05, ethylhexyl methoxycinnanate, disodium EDTA, DMDM hydantion, ext. violet 2

How to spot it: Mineral oil will simply say “mineral oil” or if the company is trying to be fancy (or slightly deceptive) it might read “parafinium” or “parafinium liqidum”. Petrolatums will say “petrolatum”.

Why it’s bad: Prevents moisture from penetrating, dries hair, causes breakage and brittleness.

Page 14: Let's Talk Natural Hair Products!

Alcohols

What they are: Bad alcohols are often used as an additive to help decrease the time it takes for hair to dry. Good alcohols are derived from natural sources (such as coconuts) and are often used to thicken hair products and/or provide “slip”.

Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Phenyl Trimethicone, Alcohol Denat., Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Aminopropyl Dimethicone, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Water (Aqua), Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Polysorbate 20, Asorbic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthenol, Biotin, Niacinamide

How to spot them: They usually say “alcohol” with the exception of propanol and ethanol. The bad culprits are enthanol, SD alcohol, SD alcohol 40, Alcohol denat, Propanol, Propyl alcohol and Isopropyl alcohol

Why they’re bad: Note: Not all alcohols are bad. The bad ones tend to remove needed moisture from the hair, causing it to become dry and eventually break over time if used regularly

Bottom Line:

Check Your Labels!

Page 16: Let's Talk Natural Hair Products!

Wow, Gwen. That’s really interesting, but it’s a lot to remember. How can I just keep it

simple?

Page 17: Let's Talk Natural Hair Products!

K.I.S.S – Keep It Simple Sista

Check the ingredient labels and quickly scan for:

1. Things ending in “sulfate”

2. Things that say “paraben”

3. Things that say “mineral oil”, “parafinium liquidum” or “petroletum”

4. Things ending in “cone” or “xane”

5. Things that say “alcohol”, “propanol” or “enthanol”

Definitely stay away from 1-3 Use caution with 4 and 5
