What is an adjective?

An adjective describes a noun (a person, place, thing, or idea).

For example;

A tall building

The skinny man

The large city

Adjectives usually answer three questions:• Which one?• What kind?• How many?

Which one?I bought the red, spicy potato chips.

We drove the smallest car in the parking lot.

What kind?I like to eat juicy peaches.

I wish I had purchased a green bike.

How many?I saw three ducks at the park.

There were several singers in the concert.

Do adjectives always come right before a noun?

No!

Adjectives can be at different places in a sentence, so don’t get confused by always looking for them right before a noun. Look at these sentences to see some places where you might find an adjective.

Big, leafy trees lined the driveway.

I like my bananas to be yellow, not green.

I enjoyed the sweet cookies my mom gave me.

She told me the swimming pool was cold.
