A Message from the President GreetingsLLDSSMembers!Whatafantastic11thAnnualLLDSSGolfoutingwehadlastmonth.TheweatherwasperfectandIamhappytosaythatwehadmorevolunteersthisyearthananypreviousyear.Nearly120golfersshoweduptosupportourevent,andweevenmadethenews!Itisestimatedthatwellover$5,000indoorprizeswasdonatedtous,andIamveryexcitedtoannouncethatweraisedmorethanourgoalof$8000.00.Afterallinvoicesandsuch,itwouldappearthatweraisedjustunder$10,000!Asyourecall,theboardvotedbackinMarchtousethefundsforSparc’sKampKaleidoscope.Forthoseofyouunfamiliarwithit,KampKaleidoscopeisasummerprogramthatprovidesindividualswithdevelopmentaldisabilities,fromtheagesof4-22,theopportunitytoexperiencesummercampinasafe,securesetting.Unfortunately,thefundsthathistoricallyhavebeenavailableforthiscampwereeliminatedintheStatebudget.Sparcrecognizestheimportanceofprovidingmeaningfulsummeractivitiesforindividualswithdisabilitiesaswellasofferingacamplikesettingthatwillpreventsummerlearninglosswhilehavingfunatthesametime.7LLDSSmembersattendKampKaleidoscopethatbeganonJune6th.Sofarreportshavebeenthatitisahugesuccess!ThankyouLLDSSforcontinuingtohelpmakeourcommunityabetterplaceforpersonswithdisabilitiesanddevelopmentaldifferences.IoftengetcomplimentsfromorganizationslikeoursintheSpringfieldareathatappreciateallthevolunteerismandsupportthatweoffer.Isincerelyhopeyourfamiliesarehavingafantasticsummer!VeryKindly,[email protected]

Syndrome.Inthis1-daycourse,participantslearnedadaptivestrategiesforcurbingundesiredbehaviorpatterns.Amixof30parents,teachers,aides,andextendedfamilymembersshoweduptoembracenotonlywhatnottodo,buthowtoguideourchildrentodesiredbehaviorsandreinforcepositivesocialexperiences.Theclasswasahugesuccessandallfeedbackfromteacherswasextremelypositive.LLDSSowesahugethankyoutoJaneNicolettaandTaraOwenfororganizingthiswonderfulevent.Wemayevenlookatmakingthisanannualeventduetoitsrecentpopularity.RememberournextmeetingisWEDNESDAY,July13th.Erin’sPavilionhadsomeschedulingissuessowehadtomovethemeetingtoaWednesdayinsteadofThursday.ThismeetingwillhostSenatorAndyManar.AsyoumayrecallSenatorManarvisiteduslastyeartodiscussawidearrayoftopicsfromschoolfundingformulasforspecialneedsprogramstotheStatebudgetwoes.SenatorManarhasacousinwithDownsyndromethatisveryclosetohim.Heisanactiveadvocateofourmissionandwhatwetrytoaccomplish.Ifyouhavequestionsandwanttoaddresstheminaprofessionalandcommunalsetting,pleasejoinusonthe13thofJuly.AcouplebigTHANKYOU’stoboththeHospitalSistersHealthSystemfordonating$2,235.00,andtotheChathamQuarterAuctionforraising$460.00fortheLLDSS.TheHospitalSisterspayanundeterminedamounteachFridaytowearjeanstowork.The$2,235wasaresultofwearingjeansonFridaysduringthemonthofMay!Then,asyoumayrecall,DebGossroworganizedtheChathamQuarterauctiononJune15ththatmanyLLDSSvolunteersshoweduptoworkat.Aportionofallsalesgoestocharityandwewerethebenefactorsof$460!Thankyouagain!
Member Spotlight CongratulationstoLLDSSmemberNickSables!NickrecentlygraduatedfromSpringfieldHighSchoolandhasimmediateplanstoattendHopeSchool’stransitionalprogramuntilheis22.Afterthat,it’spossiblehemayannouncehisbidforPresidentoftheUnitedStatesordecidetopursuehiscareerasaprofessionalbaseballplayer.Theskyisthelimitforsure!Inhissparetime,NicktakesdanceclassesandisontheSpecialOlympicsswimteamknownasSNAPattheYMCA.NickalsolovesplayingsoftballonthespecialneedssoftballteamatLincolnPark.Nickandhisdad(Scott)arebothmembersoftheSpecialNeedsBoyScouttroop.ThetroopisveryactiveintheareabutNick’sfavoriteactivityiscampingout!CongratsNick,weareveryproudofyouraccomplishments!
