L essons and Carols had its origin at Truro Cathedral (England) on Christmas Eve 1880, when a service of scripture and supporting carols was developed by the Bishop of Truro, F.

W. Benson. Some 38 years later, in 1918, this format was adapted for Christmas Eve at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, England. The BBC broadcast from King’s College helped to popularize the Service of Lessons and Carols, and it was quickly duplicated by cathedrals and parish churches throughout the world. Our service this evening continues in that tradition of Lessons and Carols as we look at the Christian story of faith - from the fall of Adam, to the coming of the Word Incarnate.

Prelude O Come All Ye Faithful Patricia Sanders-Cota What Child is This Angels We Have Heard on High Away in a Manger

Six Variants on Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming Gerald Near

Hymn Once in Royal David’s City Laurel Bennett, soloist

Solo: Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed:

Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

All: He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall;

With the poor, the scorned, the lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy.

For he is our life-long pattern; Daily, when on earth he grew,

He was tempted, scorned, rejected, Tears and smiles like us he knew. Thus he feels for all our sadness, And he shares in all our gladness.

Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing round,

We shall see him; But in heaven, Where his saints his throne surround:

Christ, revealed to faithful eye, Set at God’s right hand on high.

Bidding Prayer

The Congregation shall be bidden to Prayer in these words:

Beloved in Christ, in this season of Advent, let it be our care and delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem, to see the Babe lying in a manger.

Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by his holy Child; and let us look forward to the yearly remembrance of his birth with hymns and songs of praise. But first, let us pray for the needs of his whole world; for peace and goodwill over all the earth; for the mission and unity of the church for which he died, and especially in this country and within this city.

And because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time remember in his name the poor and the helpless; the hungry and the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. Lastly, let us remember before God his pure and lowly Mother, and all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the words which Christ himself hath taught us;

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

The Almighty God bless us with his grace; Christ give us the joys of everlasting life, and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of Angels bring us all. Amen.

The Invitatory Of the Father’s Love Begotten

Of the Father’s love begotten, E’er the worlds began to be,

He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He,

Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see,

Evermore and evermore!

Oh, that birth forever blessed, When the virgin, full of grace, By the Holy Ghost conceiving,

Bore the Savior of our race, And the babe, the world’s redeemer,

First revealed his sacred face Evermore and evermore.

O ye heights of heav’n adore him; Angel hosts, his praises sing;

Pow’rs, dominions, bow before him and extol our God and King;

Let no tongue on earth be silent, Every voice in concert ring Evermore and evermore.

Words: Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius Music: Divinum mysterium adapted from a Medieval Sanctus Trope and arranged by Thomas Gibbs

The First Lesson Genesis III

Reader: God announces in the Garden of Eden that the seed of woman shall bruise the serpent’s head.

A nd they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of

the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with

me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Carol Jesus Christ the Apple Tree Laurel Bennett, soloist

The tree of life my soul hath seen, Laden with fruit and always green:

The trees of nature fruitless be Compared with Christ the apple tree.

His beauty doth all things excel: By faith I know, but ne’er can tell The glory which I now can see In Jesus Christ the apple tree.

For happiness I long have sought, And pleasure dearly I have bought:

I missed of all, but now I see ‘Tis found in Christ the apple tree.

I’m weary with my former toil, Here I will sit and rest awhile: Under the shadow I will be,

Of Jesus Christ the apple tree.

This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, It keeps my dying faith alive;

Which makes my soul in haste to be With Jesus Christ the apple tree.

The Second Lesson Genesis XXII

Reader: God promises to faithful Abraham that in his seed shall the nations of the earth be blessed.

A nd the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven a second time, and said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not

withheld thy son, thine only son: that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Hymn Creator of the Stars of Night

Creator of the stars of night, your people’s everlasting light, O Christ, Redeemer of us all,

we pray you hear us when we call.

In sorrow that the ancient curse should doom to death a universe,

you came, O Savior, to set free your own in glorious liberty.

When this old world drew on toward night, you came; but not in splendor bright,

not as a monarch, but the child of Mary, blameless mother mild.

At your great Name, O Jesus, now all knees must bend, all hearts must bow:

all things on earth with one accord, like those in heaven, shall call you Lord.

Come in your holy might, we pray, redeem us for eternal day;

defend us while we dwell below from all assaults of our dread foe.

The Third Lesson Isaiah IX

Reader: Christ’s birth and kingdom are foretold by Isaiah.

T he people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. For unto us a child is born, unto us a

son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Carol A Stable Lamp is Lighted

A stable lamp is lighted Whose glow shall wake the sky; The stars shall bend their voices,

And every stone shall cry. And every stone shall cry,

And straw like gold shall shine; A barn shall harbor heaven,

A stall become a shrine.

This child through David’s city Shall ride in triumph by;

The palm shall strew its branches, And every stone shall cry. And every stone shall cry,

Though heavy, dull, and dumb, And lie within the roadway To pave his kingdom come.

Yet he shall be forsaken, And yielded up to die;

The sky shall groan and darken, and every stone shall cry. And every stone shall cry, For stony hearts of men:

God’s blood upon the spearhead, God’s love refused again.

But now, as at the ending, The low is lifted high;

The stars shall bend their voices, And every stone shall cry, And every stone shall cry,

In praises of the Child By whose descent among us The worlds are reconciled.

Words: Richard Wilbur (b. 1921) Music: Andújar, David Hurd (b. 1950)

The Fourth Lesson Isaiah XI

Reader: The peace that Christ will bring is foreshown.

A nd there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots: and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and

understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; and shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord. With righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth. The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

Carol Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming From tender stem hath sprung!

Of Jesse’s lineage coming As men of old have sung. It came a blossom bright, Amid the cold of winter,

When half spent was the night.

Isaiah t’was foretold it, The Rose I have in mind, With Mary we behold it, The Virgin Mother kind.

To show God’s love aright, She bore to us a Savior,

When half spent was the night.

Words: Isaiah 11:1-3, German, 15th c. translated by Theodore Baker (1851-1934) Music: 16th-century German carol, harm. Michael Praetorious (1571-1621)

The Fifth Lesson St. Luke I

Reader: The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A nd in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David;

and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Carol Gabriel’s Message

The angel Gabriel from heaven came, His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; “All hail,” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary,

most highly favored lady,” Gloria!

“For know a blessed Mother thou shalt be, All generations laud and honor thee,

Thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favored lady,”

Gloria!

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said,

“My soul shall laud and magnify his holy Name.” Most highly favored lady,

Gloria!

Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was born In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,

And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say “Most highly favored lady,”

Gloria!

Words: Basque carol; paraphrased by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) Music: Basque carol; harmonized by Edgar Pettman (1865-1943)

The Sixth Lesson St. Luke II

Reader: St. Luke tells of the birth of Jesus.

A nd it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Carol O Little Town of Bethlehem

(Stanzas 1 and 3 will be sung to the tune St. Louis. Stanzas 2 and 4 will be sung to the tune Forest Green.)

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by;

yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;

the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above,

while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love.

O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth!

and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given!

So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven.

No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin,

where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;

cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;

O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

Words: Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) Music: St. Louis, Lewis H. Redner (1831-1908)

Carol Away in a Manger Robin Tiner, soloist

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.

The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.

I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay Close by me for ever, and love me I pray.

Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven to live with thee there.

Words: Traditional carol Music: Cradle Song, melody William James Kirkpatrick (1838-1921)

arranged Bob Chilcott (b. 1955)

The Seventh Lesson St. Luke II

Reader: The shepherds go to the manger.

A nd there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord

shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

Carol Angels We Have Heard on High

Angels we have heard on high, singing sweetly through the night,

and the mountains in reply echoing their brave delight.

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why these songs of happy cheer? What great brightness did you see?

What glad tidings did you hear? Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing;

come, adore on bended knee Christ, the Lord, the newborn King.

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

See him in a manger laid whom the angels praise above;

Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, while we raise our hearts in love.

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Words: French carol; translated James Chadwick (1813-1882), altered Music: Gloria, French carol; arranged Edward Shippen Barnes (1887-1958)

The Eighth Lesson St. Matthew II

Reader: The wise men are led by the star to Jesus.

N ow when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of

the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent

them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Carol Christmas Lullaby

Clear in the darkness a light shines in Bethlehem: Angels are singing, their sound fill the air.

Wise men have journeyed to greet their Messiah; But only a mother and baby lie there.

‘Ave Maria, ave Maria’: Hear the soft lullaby the angel hosts sing.

‘Ave Maria, ave Maria, Maiden, and mother of Jesus our King’.

Where are his courtiers, and who are his people? Why does he bear neither scepter nor crown?

Shepherds his courtiers, the poor for his people, With peace as his scepter and love for his crown.

‘Ave Maria, ave Maria’: Hear the soft lullaby the angel hosts sing.

‘Ave Maria, ave Maria, Maiden, and mother of Jesus our King’.

What though your treasures are not gold or incense?

Lay them before him with hearts full of love. Praise to the Christ child, and praise to his mother

Who bore us a Savior by grace from above. ‘Ave Maria, ave Maria’:

Hear the soft lullaby the angel hosts sing. ‘Ave Maria, ave Maria,

Maiden, and mother of Jesus our King’.

Carol The First Nowell

All: The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;

in fields as they lay, keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.

Women: They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave great light,

and so it continued both day and night.

Refrain

Men: And by the light of that same star three wise men came from country far;

to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went.

Refrain

Women: This star drew nigh to the northwest, o’er Bethlehem it took its rest,

and there it did both stop and stay right over the place where Jesus lay.

Refrain

Men: Then entered in those wise men three full reverently upon their knee,

and offered there in his presence their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.

Refrain

All: Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord;

that hath made heaven and earth of nought, and with his blood our life hath bought.

The Ninth Lesson St. John I The Rev. Peter A. Lane, Reader

Reader: St. John unfolds the mystery of the Incarnation.

I n the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any

thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Carol O Come, All Ye Faithful

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;

come, and behold him, born the King of angels; O come, let us adore him,

Christ the Lord.

God from God, Light from Light eternal, lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb;

only-begotten Son of God the Father; Refrain

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;

glory to God, glory in the highest; Refrain

Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to thee be glory given;

The Congregation shall be bidden to Prayer in these words: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Priest: O God, who hast caused this holy night to shine with the illumination of the true Light: Grant us, we beseech thee, that as we have known the mystery of that Light upon earth, so may we also perfectly enjoy him in heaven; where with thee and the Holy Spirit he liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting.

People: Amen.

Carol Silent Night

Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright

sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight,

glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing alleluia; Christ, the Savior, is born!

Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light

radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Words: Joseph Mohr (1792-1848); tr. John Freeman Young (1820-1885) Music: Stille Nacht, melody Franz Xaver Gruber (1787-1864; arr. Alan Bullard

The Blessing

Priest May he who by his Incarnation gathered into one things earthly and heavenly, fill you with the sweetness of inward peace and good will; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be upon you and remain with you always.

People: Amen.

Carol Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!

Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!

Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies; with the angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem!

Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!

Christ, by highest heaven adored;

Christ, the everlasting Lord; late in time behold him come,

offspring of the Virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

hail the incarnate Deity. Pleased as man with man to dwell;

Jesus, our Emmanuel!

Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!

Mild he lays his glory by,

born that we no more may die, born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth.

Risen with healing in his wings, light and life to all he brings,

hail, the Sun of Righteousness! hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace!

Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!
