LESBIAN STUDIES AT THE LESBIAN HERSTORY ARCHIVES Dykes, Lesbians, Queer Wymn, this Fall the course, Lesbian Lives, will be offered for the fourth year by the Lesbian Her- story Archives. Participants have ranged from college age to those who had been activists since 1969, and included some with gender studies backgrounds and others exploring their herstory for the first time. Come and be part of this exciting initiative, an exploration of our complex and mul- tifaceted Herstory. Discover how the materials safeguarded by the Archives address today’s concerns and speak to the world we hope to create. In this course, open to all, we will consider Lesbian identities at the intersection of culture, race/ethnicity and class in both historical and contemporary context. We will study strategies of survival and self-expression and consider issues such as Lesbian and Queer genders, Lesbian Liberation Movements, Lesbian/Feminist/Queer theorizing and representation in popular culture. We will examine literature, personal testimonies, historical documents, auto/biography, and the visual arts. Participants will be able to draw on collections such as the Audre Lorde and Adrienne Rich papers housed at the Archives, as well as visual resources including personal photo albums spanning the twentieth century, images from the First Lesbian Art Show, and an unsurpassed collection of films and videos. Lesbian Lives will be taught by Flavia Rando, Ph.D., an art historian who has for twenty five years taught Women’s, Gender and LGBTQ Studies, most recently at Brooklyn College. A long time lesbian activist, member of Gay Liberation Front and Radicalesbians, she continues to be an activist academic. In 2013, she co-authored “Living Our Lives through Their Words” with Alexis Clements and Shawn(ta) Smith.
