1960 THE NEW ZEALAND VETERINARY JOURNAL

CORRESPONDENCE, LEPTOSPIRA ICTEROHAEMORRHAGIAE AB

, INFECTION IN CALVES

SIR,-In a recently puhlished paper (N,Z. vet, J., 8: 71) Dodd and Brakenridge described the clinical syndrome and pathology of a condition in calves caused by LePtospl~ra icteroha-emorrha.qiae AB. Since this paper was publi5heci,' furthe'r cases have been diagnosedi in the South Auckland and ,Waikato areas,

In an attempt to trace the origin of the infection, rats were collected in the Pukekohe district and 8 out of 25 showed positive or suspicious titres against 1. icterohae111orrhagiae, In the kidneys of one rat with a high positive titre, leptospirae were seen in large num-bers. .

It appears that this infection is present in rats in New Zealand, and that these animals may be actinO' as a reservoir of infection for animals 'and 111an. b
