Who is Lena Horne?

Lena was Born June 30th, 1917 to Edna Scottron Horne and Edwin "Teddy" Horne. In a hospital in Brooklyn, New York.She was a actress and singer. She also preformed on Broadway.Most of her family was part of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. (NAACP) Lena was a actress and a singer in her time. When her father, husband and son all died within the year of 1970 she went stopped her famous life and wasn’t heard from for a long time. She then around the 1980’s made a come back.

Lena’s AccomplishmentsLena was a actress at first she played rolls in, Panama Hattie (1942), Harlem on Parade (1942), I Dood It (1943), Swing Fever (1943), and As Thousands Cheer (1943), Cabin in the Sky (1943). She later Preformed in “The Wiz” (1973) as Glinda the Good.She also was a singer, she has many albums. Some of her songs are, “Black Coffee” and “Stormy Weather.”Lena’s Musical about her life ( Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music) Won a Tony award and not just one but two Grammy Awards.

Motivation And Goals

•At 16 Lena was a dancer in the chorus of Harlem’s Cotton Club.

•She acted in movies in the 1940’s like “Cabin in the Sky” and “Stormy Weather”. She also acted in “Deed I Do.” and “As Long As I live.” Which became classics.

•She was soon the highest paid African American in the mid 1940’s.

•She then went into singing at night clubs because of her race in the 1950’s. During the time she couldn’t be in movies she also did some recording.

•Lena did make a comeback in the 1980’s. In her own show on Broadway, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music

Lena Horne and Sammy Davis Jr.Lena Horne sang a duet with Sammy Davis Jr. Another African American singer of the time She also has a few songs with him. She and Sammy have a album, Called Lena Horne and The Men in her Life.
