At The Beginning Leicester Business Women project started in September 2009 and throughout our 4 years we have been delighted and inspired by those ladies that have been through our programme and successfully registered their business. Some of these ladies which registered at the very beginning have now been trading for well over 1 or 2 years which is a huge achievement1 “Well Done!!!”

“I started my business as a couture seamstress in early 2010, Leicester Business Women gave me the confidence and determination to succeed. Lots of things have happened since then, I've hosted and been part of 4 fashion shows, exhibited in a variety of places, and met lots of interesting people Baroness Harnham was a highlight. If I could have done things differently, I would have set up my business years ago, as it's the best thing I ever did, as my business works around my family, and I can choose what hours I work. I am my own

worst critic, which is why it's good to still talk to like minded people, who have set up their own business, and this is what Leicester Business Women, have done and continue to do for me, as I have met lots of people who I have worked with through them.” Cheryl Leadbetter of Povric

“In November 2009 I came across Leicester Business Women for the first time which became the catalyst to the birth of my business Transparent Training Consultancy. Three years ago I was working full time and studying, which gave me very little time to invest in developing Transparent. Once I graduated I made the decision to channel my energies into my business. Leaving employment and becoming self employed full time was a tough decision as it meant a drop in my income but it was a risk I was willing to take and I have never looked back. I have had the pleasure of working for organisations such as De Montfort University, Leicester Business Women, Zinthiya Trust, Tomorrowtogether Ltd, Mental Health Foundation and Afiya Trust. Being my own boss has given me the opportunity to be involved with some fantastic projects on topics that I am very passionate about such as disability, equality, discrimination, carers, healthcare services and employment. Starting my own business was very liberating, for the first time in my career path did I feel truly empowered and in complete control of my future, and feel I really belonged. Taking the leap and pursuing my dream was both exciting and scary, because I was stepping out of my comfort zone but exciting too because I was actually taking the plunge to fulfil a lifelong ambition. Joining Leicester Business Women was the catalyst to me taking that plunge and registering my company with Companies House made it real for me. I am much happier, more fulfilled and in control of my life. The flexibility of my business enables me to have time for myself and the people I love and to pursue more dreams. Reaping the rewards and benefits of being your own boss makes me content. Experiencing success, customer satisfaction and feedback ensure I don’t give up. I’m a self motivated person who constantly reviews my performance and strives to improve and be the best I can be.” Rehana Sidat of Transparent Training Consultancy. “ I deliver EFT. It is a self-applied technique or self-help protocol that can be quickly and easily learnt by anyone. It is a tapping technique that relieves symptoms which causes the anxiety and much more. I also deliver Indian head massage 1-2-1 sessions to small organisations and also at wellbeing events in Leicestershire. I have learnt to be patient and hopeful and that the present climate will get better for more opportunities. Also attending other workshops and delivering my grant workshops has given me enormous confidence and good networking skills. Sometimes we go through periods of frustration and anxiety in starting our businesses, yet I have learned through these workshops that we can continue doing something everyday for our business to progress. We need to be like the plants during the winter season, though it appears to be dead it is in fact alive and thriving sending down its roots to emerge brilliantly in full bloom in the spring.

I feel like the ‘seeds’ of my business were being planted and now it is time to watch my garden grow. My vision for the next 3 years for my business is that I will be a proficient EFT/NLP Practitioner and Coach, skilled, dynamic and authentic. I hope to be conducting workshops

and events nationally and internationally” Kamalangi Costello of Finding My Balance

Time Management When in business being productive, efficient and organised is very important. Showing professionalism by having good time management is key, this makes you and your business ‘look good’ The last thing you want is keeping a potential client or other organisation you wish to work with waiting, therefore showing up on time for a confirmed meeting always looks good, and portrays an image of professionalism and reliability. If you arranged to email or call a potential client ensure you follow through and just simply ordering stock out time is all beneficial to you and your business. Leicester Business Women’s Top Tips for Time Management:

1. Be realistic - can you actually make the appointment arranged? Do you have enough time for the duration of the meeting/conference/appointment? Remember there is only so many hours in your working day, would another day be more suitable?

2. Ensure you plan your time - leave time to travel or for possible traffic that could make you late 3. Are you wasting time on pointless tasks? What are your time-bandits? Do you spend too much time

'Net surfing, reading email, or making personal calls? Do you really need to sit there for two hours updating your social media sites?

4. Prioritise your work - do you have any deadlines to reach? If you have 20 tasks for a given day, how many of them do you truly need to accomplish?

5. Can you delegate to others? No matter how big or small can you trust someone else to carry out tasks? Can your time be spent more wisely somewhere else?

6. Don’t waste time waiting - while waiting for you appointment, instead of sitting there twigging your thumbs take something with you to do. Can you check and reply to emails while travelling on the bus or train?

7. You need to be organised: Don’t waste your time trying to find a file, an email or a document. Make sure you file everything away correctly and if needed keep a log of where it is

You need to replace those bad daily habits and get in the routine of time management, your business

will benefit. Want some help with time management or would you like to organise yourself better. Contact Nicole for some more hints and tips. She had previously helped out friends and family with de cluttering and creating storage solutions and decided to turn this into a business. She approached Leicester Business Women soon after making this decision and following her attendance on the programme in November 2011 and with one to one sessions, Jacqueline launched her business in April 2012.

Jacqueline used to be a nurse, however during her career she realised that she wanted to be her own boss and contacted Leicester Business Women for support and guidance.

Initially, Jacqueline found that there were people around that put her off starting her own business, saying things like it was too risky etc, and although it didn’t make Jacqueline de-motivated, the opposite happened – it made her more determined. Jacqueline has been unique in that, she believed she could do this from the start and was able to keep hold of

Leicester Business Women schedule a number of networking events, giving the opportunity to keep in touch with members from your programme, as it is essential that you make use of this supportive network which keeps you inspired, motivated and positive.

Finally, some very useful tips from Jacqueline: • Set realistic, achievable goals and take small steps • Make sure that you have a strong support network around you as it is very lonely being in business by yourself. • Be patient, open minded and honest with others as well as yourself.

So, you’ve registered your business and are trying to promote your business. This, for some can be quite difficult in times when money is tight and you do have to justify your spending – so every penny really does count! So, how do you do it? We’ve captured the ideas and innovative suggestions of many of our Leicester Business Women to find out just how they’ve made an impossible branding mission possible.

So, what is branding?

“The best brands create a special relationship with customers based on intangible qualities that evoke a strong emotional responses” CiM Why is a brand so important?

To some, a brand may just be a name, logo or corporate identity. To others it may be a trade mark or “trust mark” – a guarantee of consistent quality. To a brand-focused company it will be its most valuable and yet intangible business asset.

Branding gives customers a firm idea of what they are buying. They know what to expect. If you want to build a brand you will need to focus on what it is your customers want. Your brand is your guarantee to deliver it.

The most effective way of marketing includes many, for some it maybe leaflets, whereas for other industries its word of mouth that works better, the list really does go on1 so where do you start? First of all think about what you want to achieve from your marketing. Are you hoping for new customers / sales or are you looking to place your brand in the customers mind? What are you intending to portray? Where will you be taking your marketing? Is it for pitches and presentations? Is it for networking events? 1. Developing a portfolio. In some industries, a portfolio is your key to promoting your work to new customers. It is also a very professional way to showcase your work. Sometime, a copy of your portfolio can be placed on your website, or even on your facebook page. Another great site for pictures is pinterest. This is a fairly new way social media site, however its great for “pinning” photos or a portfolio and may lead to further work for you.

2. Vistaprint. A great site, lots of different things you can order and a very inexpensive way of marketing your business. But there will be charges not to have the “printed by vistaprint” on the back of marketing material plus extra charges for delivery etc. And no charges for delivery may mean .

Building Your Brand In The Recession

that your order takes a lot longer to arrive. On the plus side, I know many people who have used Vistaprint and are very happy with their orders. Their marketing material looks very professional and they have made lots of new contacts. From this site, you have an array of marketing materials in addition to the usual business cards, leaflets etc so can really brand on a budget. Think about notepads, envelopes, calendars to various different gifts and desk top items. One of the great things about Vistaprint, is that everything is in one place so they save you a lot of time shopping around if you can get everything in one place.

3. Local news. This may include anything from local radio, newspaper to tv. Doing something within your community. Once you have decided what you are doing, contact the local media (or send through a press release) to raise awareness. In addition, the Leicester Mercury have a business section where you can send in your business diary for the week (ie: what have you been upto). A lot of our clients have done this, and it has definitely raised their profile. A key point to remember here is to ensure that you speak and look your brand. Do you do nails? Make sure that yours show how good your work is

4. Promotional Gifts ie: pens, bags etc These are all good ways of raising your branding to the next level. But you must make the decision as to whether this means you will be parting with more money than you’d like and is it worth it? Yes, it will increase your exposure (and we hope would mean that you increase sales) but can you afford it right now? The question you need to really ask is what do you want to achieve from it? Can you do this on a budget (or at no cost)? And how confident are you in achieving this from the promotional gifts? 5. Use the Leicester Business Women network. If you have not already, then use the Leicester Business Women e shot facility. Once you have started and registered your business, you are allowed one free e shot to our extensive database covering over 1500 people within the city and county. This does not cost you anything, and the amount of people you reach is far and wide. This is currently a free service. In addition, register as a member of the Leicester Continued6

6. Use social media to extend your brand. Facebook will help your friends and family refer new clients to you. Twitter will help you share your knowledge. Use both to share knowledge rather than as a selling tool and build rapport as well as your brand. Remember, social media is not a way to make sales and we have attended a number of workshops on this advising us not to approach social media to sell directly. The idea is more about building a rapport and gaining trust and confidence in yourself and products.

7. Referrals between other organisations. Ask other partnering organisations in your sector to refer to you and vice versa. Offer a discount to the client who has been referred and / or commission to those referring. Perhaps even consider a loyalty scheme if appropriate. This is a great way to get clients re booking and coming back for more.

8. Networking events. Do you really need to pay for networking events? There are many free networking events (like the Leicester Business Women events), attend a few different ones and find out which ones work for you.

Do you have any tips for promoting / branding on a budget? Please contact Leicester Business Women so that we can share with all our members.

Tarotscopes For your delight and entertainment, Pure & Blessed Tarot has dipped into the Ancient Arts for some advice for Modern Business Women and proudly presents to you - Tarotscopes for July.

Aries Mar21- Apr19 9 of Swords Feeling blocked, worried or overburdened? Fear not Aries - remember, sometimes your mind can mess with you and 'logic' is not always your best friend. Pause and listen out for your gut instinct... what is it telling you... what are you avoiding? Ok, now take a deep breath and, start being kinder to yourself. You are very near to your goal, so put your knowledge into practise and make that next step.

Taurus Apr20 - May20 The Tower When life gives you lemons... yeah, yeah, we all know the rest. But sometimes Taurus, you need to toss those lemons into the compost and go get some sweet oranges. Where's this going? Here's a tip - sometimes when your plans go unexpectedly belly up, it's really not such a big deal. Give yourself time to adjust, and then be thankful that you can now get on with creating something bigger and better.

Gemini May21 - June21 King of Pentacles A very wise man* once told me that ' when it comes to business - cash is king'. So Gemini, dig out that paperwork and all those bank statements etc. and let's get all finances into order. Shop around - are you getting the best deals available? How are you investing your funds? Get in control and make your money work for you.

Cancer June22 - July22 7 of Rods Dear Cancer, state your position loudly and clearly. You know what you want and what is best for your business right now, so stand firm and do not be swayed. Do not back down or compromise your beliefs. Stay strong my friend. Any competition that you may face will come to recognise you as a force to be reckoned with.

Leo July23 - Aug22 King of Cups You could be facing some delicate situations that require you to apply diplomacy, compassion and composure. Do not let others ruffle your mane Leo, now is not the time to roar! Withdraw your emotions; you will gain much more by proceeding quietly, calmly and with dignity.

Virgo Aug23 - Sept22 Knight of Cups Business propositions may appear attractive, but you dear Virgo are wise enough to remember to apply a reality check. You could gain much by spending time in the company of artists or other creative souls - it won't bring you money, but it will bring you joy and it may also bring out a few of your hidden talents.

Libra Sept23 - Oct23 The Devil All work and no play makes Libra a dull friend. So come on, let your hair down and allow yourself to give into a few temptations. Indulge yourself a little in some naughty but nice treats. Have some fun - you will return to work much more productive and happier. Remember - work smarter, not harder...

Scorpio Oct24 - Nov21 7 of Swords Keep your eye on the ball Scorpio. Careful preparation is called for. Make sure you know your stuff inside out and check out all the small print. There is no room to bluffing or blagging... If you are unsure of anything in anyway, then do the smart thing - seek out and act on the advice of experts. Pick up that phone and ask someone who knows.

Sagittarius Nov22 - Dec21 Page of Rods Exciting times ahead Sagittarius! It is time for travel and voyages of discovery. Crank your personal charm up to 11. Make time to talk to everyone you meet. Move outside of your usual social circle and get to know as much as you can about people. By learning about others, you will learn even more about yourself and also build a wealth of experience around you that you can dip into.

Capricorn Dec22 - Jan19 9 of Cups Well done Capricorn, you are sitting pretty and have every reason to be pleased with yourself. Enjoy your success and spend some time with those who helped you get there. Make the most of this period; it won't be long before you are deciding to move things up another level.

Aquarius Jan20 - Feb18 The Sun Time to shine Aquarius! Step up into the limelight for a spot of shameless self-promotion. Stand tall and be proud of your achievements. You are good at what you do and it is time that you let other people in on that little secret. Strut your stuff baby!! You Rock!!

Pisces Feb19 - Mar20 Page of Cups Hey Pisces! Yes you!! Expect a surprise... When, not if, but when opportunity knocks, you make sure you kick that door down and go for it! What's your surprise? Sorry my lovely, I don't do spoilers... let's just say that by thinking outside the box, you could turn your dreams into reality... *that very wise man was Jim Hewitt ;-) Many thanks, Karen Sealey Text or Call on 07948 272330 Pure & Blessed Tarot Discover a new perspectiveA http://www.facebook.com/pureblessedtarot

A Day In The Life Of Lou Gimson

Awake early, walk dog, do domestics, shower and prepare for a day’s facilitation for LBW at the new Encore Hotel on Charles Street, Martha, my youngest at 14 has street dance class around the corner from the hotel, so comes with me. I believe in the importance of ‘showing’ your children what you do and for them to learn how to behave in certain situations. Martha is quieter than my older 2 daughters so ‘exposure’ to my clients is a good experience for her. Impressed by the new hotel’s training room, strange that the toilets are not on the same floor, who designed this then? A great day of Sales and Marketing, one of my favourite subjects with lovely LBW ladies. Martha left an hour into the session to go to street dance, to be followed with the rest of the weekend with her Dad. Her view of what I do for a living is now “Sit in nice training rooms, drinking tea, having a chat with equally nice ladies!” It’s what I always say, ‘work doesn’t feel like work’, every day is play time. Except for the book keeping days, now made much better by the lovely Tara joining me to assist. The day is hot, the room is cool, light bulb moments within the room are plentiful. A great day, hopefully enjoyed by all. Next onto the Central Library for Agrena’s book launch, not at all what I was expecting, nothing like any other book launch I have ever been to........... we were to learn about the adventures of Kapitau in Africa, Agrena, along with family, friends, colleagues and LBW friends were all there to support this most vibrant of evenings. We were treated to African dress (Agrena looked fabulous!), African Food, African Music, African Dance. We were transported across the world for a couple of hours and revelled in the charm of Africa (a wonderful place I personally experienced in 1985). I gave an impromptu talk as guest speaker amongst the readings from children and Agrena, the music, the confident MC ing by Kathy Hector etc etc. Sampled the delicious food and very apt cake made by Beba in the shape of Africa, iced with the colours of Agrena’s book! However, for me, one little boy stole the show. In the form of an 18 month old bundle of gorgeousness (is that a word?) he sat amongst the children playing the bongos on the edge of his seat, joining in as if it were the most natural thing in the world to have an audience watch him perform, yes, you’ve guessed it, on this day I fell in love!!! My best Lou

Can your business really afford to be without this service?

We have a number of Leicester Business Women clients who use this service and just have a look below at what they say about the benefits of virtual office use:

“With my new publishing company Kapitau Publishing , I could not afford renting premises for the business so I resolved to work from home, but again I needed a proper business address and land-line purely for business purposes. Skills for Enterprise offered a virtual office package and this became an instant solution to my worries regarding my company postal and communications services as well as office space. This virtual office service is convenient and readily available as and when required - all at very reasonable cost. As the Director of Kapitau Publishing Ltd, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation of Leicester Business Women's programmes and the Skills for Enterprise Virtual Office Services which my company is currently using.” Agrena Mushonga of Kapitau Publishing Ltd.

“I think that if you have a business that demands a shop or other outlet then planning for that is relatively straight forward. Planning an operating space for a family mediation service is not! I needed a business and postal address, a telephone answering service to capture and follow up enquiries at an early stage and space to meet clients. As a young business, I wanted to present all this in a professional way but I wasn’t in a financial position to be able to rent a city centre office and employ staff. Skills for Enterprise virtual office provided me with the perfect solution. Setting it up couldn’t have been easier. A meeting with Baljit helped me to clarify my needs and to decide the best service package for me. This is a virtual office which represents good value for money and helps new businesses get up and running.” Anita Hall of Trinity Mediation Services.

Interested in something a little different? Does our virtual office package not include what you’re after? Just give us a call and we maybe able to add it on to one of our services.
