Precision engineering

Precision design

At the heart of Leica Microsystems lies a core vision focused on the facilitation of discovery through innovation. This vision has led to thedevelopment of the Leica DM EP, an advanced polarizing microscope thatgives the user a tool to discover new worlds and recreate the old onesunder optimum conditions. By combining superior image quality, innova-tive features and a durable, ergonomic design, the DM EP can be used fora variety of applications in both classroom and laboratory environments.

An outstanding tool for fields ranging from Earth Sciences to MaterialSciences and Forensics, the Leica DM EP offers a vast array of special-ized features to make your polarized microscopy investigations easier andmore accurate. By employing strain-free optics and precision-engineeredpolarizing mechanisms, the DM EP’s superior design ensures a concen-tric field of view and maximized extinction for all of your investigativeneeds. And to combat the discomforts often associated with repetitivemovements and extended viewing periods, the DM EP’s highly adaptable, ergonomic design allows for comfortable use and easy manipulation of specimens.

Leica Microsystems builds this advanced microscope upon a companyheritage dating back to 1847, as the first company to put a modern microscope into mass production. Today, the company remains at the forefront of the industry, having pioneered countless advancements in thepolarized light microscopy field. It’s all part of Leica’s visionary “systems of solutions” – a philosophy that treats each customer as an individual withspecific application, research and performance demands.

The vision to unlock the past.

Max Berek1886-1949Berek, an associate of E. Leitz (now Leica), was a pioneer in the earlyyears of polarized light microscopy. He isparticularly well known for his Berekprism that allows for incident light polarization, and his Berek compensator,an optical device that is capable of quantitatively determining the wavelengthretardation of birefringent materials.

Conoscopy

The Leica DM EP can be used in a variety of polarized light applications. From determining stress levels in glass and polymers to analyzing the optical characteristics of crystals, the polarization system of the DM EP isdesigned to provide the accuracy and adaptability you’ll need for all of your identification and diagnostic applications. The DM EP‘s polarization features include:

■ An Analyzer/Bertrand Lens module with swing-in/out controls and a stabilizing mechanism to provide proper orientation and ease of usefor both Conoscopic and Orthoscopic observations

■ A rotating polarizer with swing-in/out controls and marked flats atevery 90 º for easy and accurate polarization orientations

■ DIN standard full wave ( ) and quarter wave ( ) compensators with slide stops and ergonomic grips to improve efficiencies and ease of use (other compensators also available)

The vision to examine with polarized light.

In order to discover the past, you must first be able to see brightly andclearly. The DM EP’s highly efficient illumination system allows you to dothat under optimum conditions. The DM EP’s illumination system willenhance your investigations with the following features:

■ A standard Koehler field diaphragm and magnetic blue filter to provide sharp, vivid images for viewing and documentation

A 2000 hour/35 watt halogen lamp equipped with an illuminated intensity control system to signal users when the microscope hasbeen left on – saving on lamp life

■ A voltage sensing power supply designed to meet international safetystandards and deliver optimized light intensity regardless of voltagefluctuations – facilitating usage anywhere in the world

The vision to illuminate for exploration.

Alfred Wegener1880-1930Wegener is credited with one of the most important and far-ranging geological theories of alltime. His “Theory of ContinentalDrift” was one of the earliest, scientifically supported explana-tions for the origins of earth’s continents and oceans.

Precision-engineered, strain-free objectives

A rear-facing nosepiece featuring 4 independently-centerable objectives

Exacting Alignment In polarized light microscopy, the only factor that should affect the polarizedlight source is the specimen being examined. That’s why the DM EP’s optical system was engineered with strain-free optics that eliminate opticalinterferences and improve the accuracy of your findings. The DM EP provides superior optical quality with the following features:

■ A centerable, strain-free condenser equipped with a slot for compen-sators, such as a a quarter wave ( ) compensator - allowing for circular polarization techniques

■ A selection of precision-engineered, strain-free POL objectives to provide brilliant image quality

■ Standard 20mm field number 10x eyepieces for an increased field of view

The vision to enhance image quality.

The precision engineering of the DM EP ensures that every mechanismthroughout the microscope is configured to eliminate deviations in themicroscope’s alignment - ensuring a centered field of view. The DM EP provides precision alignment with the following features:

■ A rear-facing nosepiece featuring 4 independently-centerable, strain-free objectives to ensure parcentricity for concentric rotations of spec-imens around the optical axis

■ An eyepiece with a cross-line reticle that can be adjusted at 45˚ and 90˚angles to assist in the positioning and examination of specimens

■ A Seidentopf binocular body and Analyzer/Bertrand Lens moduleequipped with alignment pins to ensure extinction when the polarizerand analyzer are engaged

■ A specially coated prism in the binocular/trinocular body to maximizeimage transmission

■ An angled quartz plate in the Analyzer/Bertrand Lens module to eliminate psuedo-pleochroism and maximize extinction

■ A high precision 180mm diameter rotating stage marked in one degreeincrements and equipped with two verniers for accurate measurementsto a tenth of a degree (attachable mechanical stage also available)

The vision to investigate with confidence.

John Dalton1766-1844Dalton proposed the Atomic theory in 1803 which stated that all matter was composed ofatoms; atoms of a given elementpossess unique characteristicsand a certain weight; and threetypes of atoms exist: simple, compound, and complex.
