THE LEGEND OF THE DACIAN FLAG WITH A WOLF’S HEAD

Decebalus was the most brave and wise of our Dacia’s kings, our grandfathers. Since he was a little boy, he was brave, righteous, honest and sympathetic towards those suffering.

But he was showing compassion not only towards people, but he was also treating animals with care and pity. One day, while he was walking with his friend, Duran, through the woods around Sarmisegetusa, he found the cub of an wolf collapsed in a precipice. It was little, it barely opened his eyes and, while falling, it broke a leg. It was shaking, yelping and was about to die..

Decebalus took it to the fortress, tied its broken leg between little shovels and gave shelter to the animal in a shed. When it cured, it grew bigger and stronger than a Shepherd dog. It was tamed, good with the good ones and fierce with the bad ones.It had grey, shaggy hair, thick neck, strong legs and sharp fangs. When it was furious, it would shriek, like a whistle, which would frighten all the dogs and people. Maybe that’s the reason why Decebalus called it Whistle and taught it to gather the game shot down with an arrow by him in the woods. Once, during a harsh winter with snow-drifts, Decebalus separated himself from the hunters’ group.

And, all of a sudden, in a forest glade, a pack of hungry wolves rushed upon him. At first, Whistle’s eyes sparkled as if it was happy to see its brothers. Decebalus took his sword with the point bent and stayed at a beech’s trunk to defend himself from the wild beasts. He called Whistle to help him. The tamed wolf came at his feet. But the wolf pack surrounded the tree. The first wolf that attacked was thrust by the young prince’s bent sword notched in the neck. The other wolves were prepared to jump…

All of a sudden, Whistle attacked the wolves and started a fierce fight with them, scraping and dissipating the snow. But the wolves were numerous and they started tearing him with their fangs. Decebalus, up in the tree, was spiking them with the arrows and the pack retired in the woods singing with sorrow.

Scorilo, Decebalus’ father, was amazed at his son’s bravery:

– Father, Whistle saved me!Then, everyone saw Whistle lying among the

four darted wolves that reddened the snow.Whistle couldn’t live anymore. It died while watching his master who it defended with loyalty.

The young man asked a blacksmith to make a brass wolf head, with its mouth open, a head like that of Whistle.

A furrier sewed a kin’s skin some kind of bag, long of 2 meters, that , attached to the brass wolf head put on a iron pole, was whistling when blown by the wind. That’s how the Dacian fight flag was made.

That is the Romanian legend about ROMANIAN FLAG.
