LEGEND NYI RORO KIDUL

Page 8: LEGEND REOG PONOROGO

Several months ago, while visiting the beach towns of Pangandaran and Batu Karas on the south coast of Java, we learned about the legend of Nyi Roro Kidul, the goddess who rules those seas. In the beach town of Pelabuhan Ratu, a local hotel has a room set aside for her, outfitted entirely in green, her color. Indeed, you dare not wear green at the seaside, for fear of incurring her wrath and being pulled to a watery grave. One night we were relaxing on the beach at Pangandaran, sipping some Johnny Walker Red among the fishing boats with Russell and a fellow Indonesian teacher named Tony. Denise remarked that she smelled flowers. Tony looked at us strangely, and said that smelling flowers was the first sign that Nyi Roro Kidul was coming. Shortly after that, one of us mentioned that we saw lights in the water. We were completely unaware that this was the second sign that Nyi Roro Kidul was coming until Tony told us. He also mentioned that the third (and final) sign was actually seeing her castle rise up out of the water. Sure enough, way out on the water, a raft floated by. It had a green tarp pulled over it, with a glowing light inside, that could easily pass for the castle of a sea goddess. Thankfully, none of us were were pulled out to a watery grave that night.

LEGEND BANYUWANGI

According to available historical data regarding the history of Blambangan, Banyuwangi was formed on the 18th of December, 1771. Prior to the Puputan Bayu War (Banyuwangi local language meaning the war fought in Bayu, now Kecamatan Songgon), there was a heroic war, when Blambangan warriors lead by Prince Puger (the son of Wong Agung Wilis) attacked the VOC force in Banyualit in 1768. However, unfortunately the date of the event was not exactly recorded and there was an impression that the attack resulted in total defeat, but perhaps the enemy did not lose at all. Basically historical records of this event are extremely vague. It is known that during this battle Prince Puger died. After Lateng was destroyed, Wong Agung Wilis was captured and taken to Banda Island. Based on historical data, the name Banyuwangi cannot be separated from Blambangan Kingdom. Since the era of Prince Tawang Alun (1655-1691), Prince Sasranegara, Prince Mancanapua, Prince Danureja (1691-1736), Prince

Page 10: LEGEND REOG PONOROGO

Danuningrat (1736-1763) and the time of occupation by Bali (1763-1767), the VOC had not been interested in entering and controlling Blambangan. In 1743, the eastern part of Java (including Blambangan) was surrendered by Pakubuwono II to the VOC. The VOC felt that Blambangan belonged to them. It was temporarily considered a "stock good " that would be exploited when needed. Even when Prince Danuningrat wanted the aid of the VOC against Bali, the VOC was still not interested in Blambangan or the little part of Banyuwangi (at that time it was called Tirtaganda, Tirtoarum, or Tuyoarum). Then suddenly the VOC tried to annex Banyuwangi and secure the entire kingdom of Blambangan. During the five year war (1767-1772), the VOC attempted to annex Banyuwangi at the time that it was a thriving center of trade in Blambangan Kingdom dominated by the British. Finally, it is clear that the birth of the place, known eventually as Banyuwangi, started with the Puputan Bayu War. If the British had not occupied Banyuwangi in 1766, perhaps the VOC would not have annexed Blambangan in 1767, and the Puputan Bayu War would not have happened. There is obviously a strong correlation between the Puputan Bayu War and the birth of Banyuwangi. Therefore, December 18th, 1771 is appropriately designated as the birthday of Banyuwangi. The Legend Of BanyuwangiThe ruler of the kingdom of Blambangan, Raden Banterang, used to occupy the neighboring areas in order to expand his territory, including the Klungkung Kingdom of Bali. The outbreak of the Klungkung War destroyed such a small country. The king of Klungkung

Page 11: LEGEND REOG PONOROGO

was killed on the battlefield, yet his daughter and son were able to escape and hide in the jungle. One day, Raden Banterang and his commanders were inspecting his district while hunting. It was in the jungle that Raden Banterang met a beautiful lady named Ida Ayu Surati. She was then taken to Blambangan to be his wife. Raden Banterang and Ida Ayu Surati enjoyed a happy life in the palace. When Raden Banterang was hunting one day, the lonely princess was surprised by the arrival of a dirty beggar asking for her pity. The princess was surprised to find that the beggar was her older brother, Agung Bagus Mantra. She promptly squatted and embraced her brother's legs. However, her great respect of her brother was not well accepted. Instead, she was tortured for she supposedly betrayed her noble family. Agung Bagus Mantra asked his sister to kill Raden Banterang, but such a request was rejected. He was very angry with her and came up with a sly idea to slander Raden Banterang. At first, Raden Banterang did not believe that his wife had been involved in a scandal with another man. Yet because of Agung's convincing words, he was finally influenced and therefore, his wife was dragged down to a small lake. Asking for compassion, Ida Ayu Surati tried to tell the truth and denied her husband’s accusation. Hearing his wife's explanation, the king became angrier and angrier. As a proof of her sacred love, she asked her husband to kill her. As a last request, she asked her husband to throw her dead body into the river. She said that if the water in the river smelled terrible, it meant that she had ever been sinful, but if it smelled fragrant it meant that she was innocent.

Page 12: LEGEND REOG PONOROGO

Raden Banterang who was unable to control his emotions, soon stabbed his keris (dagger) into his wife's chest. She died instantly. The dead body of Ida Ayu Surati was quickly thrown into the dirty river. Raden Banterang was shocked to see the river suddenly become clean and as clear as glass with a fragrant smell. Raden Banterang screamed crazily and regretted his deed. He walked unsteadily and fell into the river screaming, "Banyuwangi, Banyuwangi, Banyuwangi!”Another legend of Banyuwangi was taken from the story of Sri Tanjung Sidopekso. Once upon a time, a local ruler, King Sulahkromo, had a patih, R.Sidopekso. The wife of the patih, Sri Tanjung, was so beautiful that the king desired her. In order to be able to seduce Sri Tanjung, the king ordered his patih on a mission that would take a long time to accomplish. During his absence, the king tried to court Sri Tanjung without success. When R. Sidopekso returned, he went first to his ruler. The king, angry that his scheme had not succeeded, told the patih that during his absence his wife had been unfaithful to him. Sidopekso went home and confronted his wife with her alleged adultery. Her denial did not convince him, and he announced that he was going to kill her. Sidopekso brought Sri Tanjung to the bank of the river. Before he stabbed her to death, she prophesied that her innocence would be proven. And indeed, after having stabbed his wife to death and having thrown the dead body into the dirty river, the river immediately became clean and began to spread a wonderful fragrance. Sidopekso said, “Banyu ... Wangi..... Banyuwangi”. This means "fragrant water ".

BANYUWANGI was born from the proof of noble and sacred love.

LEGENG TOBA

Once upon a time, there was a fisherman lived in a North Sumatra. Don’t ask me the year, all I

Page 14: LEGEND REOG PONOROGO

know it was a very long time before you were born. When he was fishing in a river, a big fish was nailed. This fish had gold color all over its body. It was beautiful. The fisherman was very excited. He imagined a delicious dinner in his head. He put the fish in his basket and went home happily. When he got home, he put the fish in a sink. He grabbed a knife to kill the fish. But when he almost killed it, he saw the fish eyes and felt pity. He took the knife away and put the fish in washbasin and added water in it. “Don’t worry, I wouldn’t kill you” the fisherman said. The fisherman went fishing again. But this time he couldn’t get any fish. He went home with nothing in his hand. His stomach started to sing. He walked home slouching. He was surprised when he saw smoke came out from his kitchen. “Who cooked in my kitchen?” he confused. He took a peep and surprised when he saw a beautiful girl cooked in his house. “Why there’s a girl in my kitchen?” he confused. The fisherman entered the room. “Who are you?” he asked the girl. “I’m the fish.” The girl said. The fisherman looked the washbasin and saw nothing in it. “The fish?” he asked incredulous. “Yes. You didn’t kill me and I’m very thankful. I will return your kindness.” The girl said. “That’s ok. I didn’t ask any return” the fisherman said. “But I have

to.”The girl insisted. “Well, I lived alone. I don’t have family. If you want to be my wife, I will be very happy.” The fisherman asked the girl. The girl smiled and said “I’d love to but you have to promise me that if we have kid you can’t tell him about me.” And so, the fisherman and the fish girl were married. And then they had a child called Samo. Samo was very naughty. He couldn’t be advisable. He always played and never helped his parents. One day Samo was asked to deliver lunch to his father. On his way, he met his friends and forgot to deliver his father’s lunch. Samo played with his friends. When he was tired and hungry, he was resting under a tree and ate his father lunch. Meanwhile his father waited him in starve and tired. His father went home and saw Samo played. “Where is my lunch?” he asked.“Mmm…mm.. I ate it” Samo said afraid. “Why you ate it?” his father asked.“Mmm..mm.. I was hungry after playing with my friend” Samo said. “You were told to deliver my lunch but you didn’t listen.” his father was very furious. “I can’t handle you anymore. You are very naughty. Go away from me. Don’t come home anymore.” His father yelled and evicted Samo from his house. And this what happened if you can’t control your mouth when you angry.

Page 16: LEGEND REOG PONOROGO

His father said the words that he wouldn’t suppose to say. “You… fish’s son.” Suddenly, the sky was getting dark. The storm was breaking the ears. The rain felt from the sky like giant hose sprayed water all over the place. And then the water came out from the land and getting harder. Sumo’s mother was very sad. “I told you don’t tell him about me” she said to her husband. “Now I’m going back to be fish again. Good by” the mother was transformed magically to be gold fish again and disappear through the water. The water was getting higher and drown the village and formed a lake. Meanwhile, sumo run to the hill and stayed there. The hill then was surrounded by the lake. Now the lake was known as Toba Lake. Toba came from Tuba word means no mercy. And the hill in the middle called Samosir Island. Samosir means ‘Samo di usir’ or in English : Samo have been evicted. This is just a legend, there were so many versions of the name’s story. You can’t tell which one is really true. But I heard this version since I was a little girl.

Prince Raden Putra and Dewi Limaran were husband and wife. They lived in a palace. Prince Raden Putra’s father was the king of the kingdom. One day, Dewi Limaran was walking around in the palace garden. Suddenly she saw a snail. It was ugly and disgusting. “Yuck!” said Dewi Limaran and then she threw it away into a river. She did not know that the snail was actually an old and powerful witch. She could transform herself into anything. The witch was angry to Dewi Limaran. The witch put a spell on her and changed her into a golden snail. The witch then threw it away into the river. The golden snail was drifting away in the river and got caught into a net. An old woman was fishing and used her net to catch some fish. She was surprised to see a golden snail in her net. She took it and brought it home. When the old woman woke up in the morning, she was surprised that the house was in good condition. The floor was mopped. And she also had food on the table. She was thinking very hard. “Who did this to me? The person is very kind.” It happened again and again every morning. The old woman was very curious. One night she decided to stay up late. She was peeping from her room to know who cooked for her. Then, she could not believe what she saw. The golden snail she caught in the river turned into a beautiful woman. The old woman approached her. “Who are you, young girl?”“I am Dewi Limaran, Ma’am. A witch cursed me. I can change back as a human only at night, “ explained Dewi Limaran. “The spell can be broken if I hear the melody from the holy gamelan, “continued Dewi Limaran. The old woman then ruhed to the palace. She talked to Prince Raden Putra about her wife. Prince

Raden Putra was so happy. He had been looking for his wife everywhere. He then prayed and meditated. He asked the Gods to give him the holly gamelan. He wanted to break the witch’s spell. After several days praying and meditating, finally Gods granted his wish. He immediately brought the holy gamelan to the old woman’s house. He played it beautifully. And then amazingly the golden snail turned into the beautiful Dewi Limaran. The couple was so happy that they could be together again. They also thanked the old woman for her kindness. As s return, they asked her to stay in the palace.

LEGEND SURABAYA

A long time ago in East Java there were two strong animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was a shark and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea. Actually, they were friends. But when they were hungry, they were very greedy. They did not want to share their food. They would fight for it and never stop fighting until one of them gave up.It was a very hot day. Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a goat.“Yummy, this is my lunch,” said Baya.“No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy! I had not eaten for two days!” said Sura. Then Sura and Baya fought again.

Page 19: LEGEND REOG PONOROGO

After several hours, they were very tired. Sura had a plan to stop their bad behavior.“I’m tired of fighting, Baya,” said Sura.“Me too. What should we do to stop fighting? Do you have any idea?” asked Baya.“Yes, I do. Let’s share our territory. I live in the water, so I look for food in the sea. And you live on the land, right? So, you look for the food also on the land. The border is the beach, so we will never meet again. Do you agree?” asked Sura. “Hmm... let me think about it. OK, I agree. From today, I will never go to the sea again. My place is on the land,” said Baya. Then they both lived in the different places. But one day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He was very hungry and there was not much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke the promise.“Hey, what are you doing here? This is my place. Your place is in the sea!”“But, there is water in the river, right? So, this is also my place!” said Sura. Then Sura and Baya fought again. They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya's tail. Baya did the same thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up. He went back to the sea. Baya was very happy. He had his place again. The place where they were fighting was a mess. Blood was everywhere. People then always talked about the fight between Sura and Baya. They then named the place of the fight as Surabaya, it’s from Sura the shark and Baya the crocodile. People also put their fight as the symbol of Surabaya city.

LEGEND MELING KUNDANG

Page 20: LEGEND REOG PONOROGO

A long time ago on a small beach in Indonesia, lived a woman and her son, who was called Malin Kundang. They did not have very much money, but Malin Kundang was a healthy strong boy who was a good boatsman and swimmer. He went to the sea to catch fish, which he and his mother ate or sold in the town. One day, Malin Kundang saw a trader’s ship in trouble. It was being raided by a small band of pirates. Malin Kundang went to help the ship and fought off the pirates. The trader was very grateful to Malin Kundang, and very impressed by his strength and bravery. He asked Malin Kundang to work with him and Malin Kundang agreed.Malin Kundang made lots of money. He bought a huge ship of his own and married a beautiful wife. Many years later, Malin Kundang’s ship landed on the small beach where he grew up. People on the beach recognised him, and the news travelled around the village. His mother, who had been sad and lonely without him, heard the news and ran to the beach to meet her beloved son.Malin Kundung, wearing his expensive clothes and standing with his beautiful wife, didn’t recognise his mother and refused to greet the poor old woman. His mother begged him to see her three times, but he declined. At last Malin Kundung shouted “Enough, old woman! I have never had a dirty and ugly peasant woman like you as a mother!” and he

Page 21: LEGEND REOG PONOROGO

ordered his crews to set sail. His mother was angry. She shouted that she would turn him into stone unless he apologised. Malin Kundung laughed and started to sail away into the calm sea.Suddenly a thunderstorm descended. Malin Kundang’s ship was tossed to and fro on the huge waves, and sank. Malin Kundang was thrown from the ship onto a small island and turned into stone.
