LEAVING CERT MUSIC
Why choose music?
Reasons for choosing….
• I am interested in music… I love music!!• I did it for JC and want to continue…• I have been playing an
instrument/instruments…I have been singing…I have been in a choir, a band, etc.
• Music is ‘points friendly’!!
What is involved in LC Music?
3 ELEMENTS
1. LISTENING: 4 Set Works, Listening skills & Irish Music
2. COMPOSITION: 16 bar Melody & 16 bar Harmony (Lesser req. for OL)
3. PRACTICAL: Performance (solo or group), Music Technology & aural test/sight reading
Structure of Exam/Marking
Each element worth 25%
Double one of the elements: YOU CHOOSE(Higher Elective = 50% overall exam)
Example: I play an instrument(s) to a reasonably high standard so I choose to do a practical worth 50% (I will play 6-8 or 4 pieces & Music Technology)
Music Technology
• Part of the Practical Element• Generally involves use of music
notational/writing software, e.g. Sibelius, Cubase, etc.
• Can be done as half of Practical or as full Practical if you play from the electronic/keyboard repertoire
(Currently an extremely straight-forward option!)
What If I Haven’t Studied Music For JC?It is not impossible to do LC Music BUTyou need decent practical standard which
will allow you to catch up on Compositional (theory/writing) skills
You would need to make some effort to catch up…before start of Poetry (5th Year)
THE REQUIRED PRACTICAL STANDARD 1 INST = Approx GRADE 5 (Better!!) (2 Instruments = not as high)
What Should I Do Now?
• Talk it through at home!• Seek advice from music teachers• Ask those who have done music/are doing
LC music • Go online (www.examinations.ie – read the
syllabus)• If you are doing TY music use remaining
opportunities to brush up/improve your standard
GOOD LUCK!
