institutions and even political parties worldwide. Youtube Edu specifically focuses on educational

content in the form of videos for people to “discover, create and share” regardless of whether one is

a learner, educator, parent or institution. Many educators have sought for resources available on

Youtube Edu to supplement their classroom activities and this is made even more possible

Wiki

What is Wiki?

A wiki is usually a web application, which allows people to add, modify, or delete content in

collaboration with others. Text is usually written using a simplified mark up language or a rich-text

editor. While a wiki is a type of content management system, it differs from a blog and others as such

system in that the content is created without any defined owner or leader, and wikis have little implicit

structure, allowing structure to emerge according to the needs of the users.

The encyclopaedia project- Wikipedia, is the most famous wiki on the public web, but there are many

sites running many different kinds of wiki software. Wikis can serve many different purposes both

public and private, including knowledge management, note taking, community websites and intranets.

Some permit control over different functions (levels of access). For example, editing rights may

permit changing, adding or removing material. Others may permit access without enforcing access

control. Other rules may also be imposed to organize content.

Types of Wiki

Page 20: Learning Through Open Educational Resources

14

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is an online encyclopaedia built to act as a reference medium that is readily available for

free. Its content is contributed by a global community of volunteers as it is open for anyone to

update and edit. As of today, Wikipedia (2013) reports to have over 30 million articles stored in 287

languages. It is no surprise that this site is ranked among the top 10 biggest and most popular online

reference by Alexa, a company known for providing reliable internet traffic data.

http://en.wikipedia.org/

Page 21: Learning Through Open Educational Resources

15

Wikinews

Wikinews is a wiki project launched by the Wikimedia Foundation that aims to provide free news

reports to internet users anywhere (Wikipedia, 2013). Its content is collected based on

“collaborative journalism” or “citizen journalism” which means that anyone with access to the

internet is allowed to contribute to the site. However, Wikinews makes it a policy to maintain a

neutral point of view in their news articles. Wikinews has made remarkable news coverage over the

years, especially in events which implicate large populations of people such as natural disasters.

(Thelwall et al., 2013).

http://en.wikinews.org/

Page 22: Learning Through Open Educational Resources

16

Wikisource

Wikisource is an online library specifically hosting contents that are of textual sources. These

materials are often scanned from their original copies and uploaded into the digital library, allowing

it to reach a wider scope of audience. While several criticisms have been made regarding the

credibility and reliability of its content, Wikisource have been cited by large organizations including

the National Archives and Records Administration (Wikipedia, 2013). While the larger faction of its

contents is made up of texts, Wikisource also holds a collection of comics, films and audio books as

well.

http://en.wikisource.org/

Page 23: Learning Through Open Educational Resources

17

Wikiversity

Wikiversity is a project by the Wikimedia Foundation that focuses on hosting contents that are

tailored for educational use. It is largely referred to by educators and students as it provides tutorials

and courses that are more familiar to the courses taught in class. It aims to offer free educational

content in a multitude of language translations, covering topics befitting students of all grade levels

(Wikipedia, 2013).

http://en.wikiversity.org/

Page 24: Learning Through Open Educational Resources

18

Wiktionary

Wiktionary, coming from the word dictionary, offers a free multilingual dictionary to everyone.

While it currently bears word translations and explanations from 158 languages including “Simple

English”, it aims to further grow in terms of language coverage, hoping to be able to host

translations of all words in all the languages of the world. On top of that, its English contents also

offer a Wikisaurus (thesaurus) feature which entails synonyms of each word.

http://en.wiktionary.org/

Page 25: Learning Through Open Educational Resources

19

Wikidata

Wikidata is a repository for all the data keyed into the various Wikimedia wiki projects. This

relatively new project was set up to create a centralised base for all the links to articles and pages

published on the other wiki sites. Due to the fact that the collection of articles in the Wikimedia wikis

has grown incredibly massive, Wikidata aims to string these different articles from the different wikis

under the topics they cover. This way, by searching the topic “History”, for example, Wikidata would

direct users to a page listing down all the different articles published in all the other sites and in all

the languages available in. In simpler terms, Wikidata may be understood as a one-stop directory to

all the articles published in all the types of wiki projects by the Wikimedia Foundation.

http://en.wikidata.org/

Page 26: Learning Through Open Educational Resources

20

Wikiquote

Wikiquote is an online wiki project that concentrates on collecting quotations from notable “people,

books, films and proverbs” that is collaboratively contributed by its users. While there many

reference platforms for quotes online already exist, Wikiquote provides cross-links to the Wikipedia

pages of its quote sources. This would largely ease users in finding out more about the prominent

figures who came up with the quotes as everything is interconnected within the vast Wikimedia

libraries.

http://en.wikiquote.org/

Page 27: Learning Through Open Educational Resources

21

Wikibooks

Wikibooks is a store of open-content textbooks (Wikibooks, 2013). As the term textbook may be

open to various interpretations, Wikibooks notes down that only specific books with features of

“annotated texts, instructional guides and manuals” are relevant to this site. This helps to distinguish

the contents from those acceptable in Wikisource and those that belong here. The resources

available on this site may be used for both formal learning as well as informal or self-learning

purposes.

http://en.wikibooks.org/

Page 28: Learning Through Open Educational Resources

22

Wikivoyage

Wikivoyage is an online-based travel directory that covers not only travel destinations but travel

topics of discussions as well. This Wikimedia project is, like most others, a result of collaborative

journalism by users from all across the globe. According to Wikipedia (2013), the contents of this

site’s materials are divided into broad categories including destinations and itineraries. These

contents may be adapted and tailored in various ways to be a contributing aid to any classroom

teaching, especially for subjects like language and social studies. Wikivoyage is also available in nine

different languages with English being its users’ most preferred language.

Whether it is Wikipedia, Wikiversity or any other types of Wiki, one feature that is common among

all the Wikis is its search tool. Every Wiki site features a Search bar, usually located on the top right

corner of the page which allows users to key in words related to the content they wish to search for.

By doing so, users may either be automatically directed into a specific page most related to the

keyword(s), or be given a list of suggested pages which may be related to the keyword(s) entered.

School Tube

What is School Tube?

SchoolTube is yet again another video sharing website but with a twist in its features. Unlike

TeacherTube, Youtube or Vimeo where any user is entitled to run their own channel and upload

contents freely, SchoolTube makes a school channel official by requiring every school to be

registered before contents are uploaded. This way, each school channel would have both student

and teacher accounts representing them and while students are allowed to upload contents,

teachers are required to monitor these uploads to ensure that they are relevant to education in one

way or another. Due to this systematic filtering feature, SchoolTube is granted access in many

institutions where other commercial video platforms have been blocked (Wikipedia, 2013).

However, as for viewing purposes, anyone with access to the internet is welcome to view the

uploaded contents without having to register and this promotes and encourages schools to be active

resource providers.

http://www.schooltube.com/

Benefits School Tube offers

1. Membership benefits

Members are divided into students and teachers. Each role has different level of autonomy

in managing the contents of the site. While both parties are allowed to upload contents,

only teachers are entitled to monitor contents and are permitted to remove contents which

are inappropriate to the site.

2. Detailed search options

Users may search up keywords in order to find the resources relevant to them or they may

also browse the various categories available on the site.

3. Content publisher

Only members who are signed in are allowed to upload contents into the site.

4. Wide content coverage

The contents of this video sharing site are vast and comprehensive. It covers a host of

educational topics and subjects familiar to school course contents.
