12. What was the California Gold Rush?

Many Americans moved to CA in 1849 looking for gold

Massive migration By land = very long By sea = very

expensive, but faster

13. Who were the transendentalists?

Writers and political activists from New England area

New thinkers, new ideas, new way of observing and thinking about America

Sparked many other reform movements

These people were VERY anti-slave/abolitionists, and very ‘liberal’ by 1830’s standards

14. What education reforms occurred in the 1830’s?

Grade school went from being all private to public (paid for through taxes)

Became mandatory that kids go to school

First school for students with special needs and women

Lots of universities built = more accessible for ‘average’ person

15. What were some of the major events in the Women’s Reform movement of the 1830’s?

Women push for right to vote (didn’t actually happen for another 80 years)

Women push for right to an education

Changes in laws – marriage and property

16. What is the Underground Railroad?

Network of escape routes for slaves as they escape from their plantations to areas that prohibit slavery

Slaves traveled at night, sleeping during the day in homes owned by abolitionists

No actual Railroad

17. How is an abolitionist different from someone who is just anti-slave?

Anti-Slave = dislike slavery, often northerners, some southerners.

Abolitionist = someone who works actively to end slavery through protests, helping slaves escape, work in the political realm, etc.
