CLEAR CREEK HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2014 PROJECT GRADUATION

Th e class of 2014 Clear Creek Project Graduation committee wants to thank the Clear Lake Body shop located on Coryell in League City and the Clear Creek High School PTSA for their generous donations. It is organizations like yours that help our event be a great success. Th e next Project Graduation meeting will be on Tuesday March 25, 7 pm at Double Dave’s party room. Project Graduation is selling food for Friday lunches from now until May 23. We do need volunteers to help with these weekly lunches. Th e Friday lunches fundraises the most amount of money for the project graduation party and prizes. We really appreciate any help you can give us! Please contact Karen Vaughn, [email protected], to volunteer on Fridays.

Donations can be mailed to P. O. Box 1128 League City, Texas 77574. We have several levels of sponsorship including Friends of 2014, Bronze, Silver or Gold. Please contact us if you know of a Project Graduation sponsor. We need to raise $20,000 for the party in June.

EDUCATION VILLAGE IN CCISD HOME TO WETLANDS PROJECT

A retention pond behind the Education Village in Clear Creek ISD has been transformed into a unique outdoor space that is part classroom and part envi-ronmental project. With the guidance of the Texas coastal Watershed program and Texas Sea Grant, teachers, students and community volunteers created a fl oating wetlands area.

Th e islands are buoyant rafts of recycled plastic fi bers on which wetland plants can grow. Roots work their way through the mesh of the islands and into the water, where they take up fertilizer and other contaminants washed into the pond with the stormwater. Th e rafts also develop communities of wetland microorganisms, which break down pollutants in the water. Th e islands are anchored and can rise and fall as the water level in the pond changes.

Students at Mossman Elementary School, Bayside Intermediate School and Clear Falls High School helped care for the plants in a greenhouse at Education Vil-

lage. Career and Technical Education students at Clear Falls made the concrete anchors. CCISD Students and community members of all ages volunteered in November to install the fl oating islands.

CLEAR LAKE HS ORCHESTRA 1ST IN TEXASSome would say the Clear Lake High School Orchestra has become a dynasty under the direction of Bryan Buff aloe. Th e orchestra began its ascent in 2010 when the group placed second at the Texas Music Educator’s (TMEA) Honor Orchestra competition. Since then the Clear Lake Orchestra managed to snag 1st place in 2011, 2013 and 2014. Th ey were 2nd in 2012.

“Th is achievement is unprecedented in any division of the Texas Music Educa-tors Association, band, choir or orchestra divisions,” explains CCISD Director of Visual and Performing Arts Dean Muths, “Clear Lake High School Orchestra is one of the most consistently successful programs in state history, and that is saying something in Texas.”

Th e orchestra has 13 All-State students, which is typical of this high school program. “Th ese students and their directors are extraordinary in every measure,” said Muths. Th e Clear Lake High School Orchestra will perform in February at the TMEA convention in San Antonio.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT HEALTH PLANBY DR. KIRK KOEPSEL DPM, MBA

Now that the Aff ordable Care Act is partially in place people are faced making choices based upon what the government has negotiated with health care insurers. Th e actual leg work in determining what your access to and choices of doctors are, pharmacy benefi ts, emergency care and out-patient services are left up to the individual or family decision maker. Making a good choice is essential to your health care and the health care of your family.

I think that most people in this country who already have health insurance as-sumed that it would only be the un-insured that would be using the government health care exchanges. After all we were all told that if we like our insurance plan and our doctors we could keep them. However it has become quite clear that this is not the case and many of us will be forced into the government health care exchanges. With this in mind I want to discuss briefl y what elements are important in making your choice of health plan either now or in the future.

Th e elements that are important in choosing a health plan include: Monthly premium costs, deductibles/co-pays, access to a physician network of family practice doctors and specialists, pharmacy benefi ts, access to hospitals and out patient services and out-of-network benefi ts.

Certainly cost is a signifi cant factor in making a choice but by far is not the most important element in making your choice. An inexpensive monthly premium with a high deductible may actually leave you with limited access and choices to special-

ists and drugs when you need them most. In the event of a serious illness or injury your limited access to the care by highly qualifi ed specialists and non- formulary drugs will impact your prognosis for health and recovery in a signifi cant way even though you have ìhealth insuranceî. In my opinion and experience, of the elements listed above the most important are the specialist physician network, pharmacy and access to out-of network benefi ts. Most people are not aware of the value in having out-of-network benefi ts. Out-of-network benefi ts can be a back door for access to care by some of the best specialists, hospital networks and outpatient services should you need them. Th e trend with health care plans now and into the future is the limiting of access to care by off ering fewer choices of doctors, hospitals and outpatient services. Be diligent in researching your choices.

*Dr. Koepsel is the senior partner of Bay Area Podiatry Associates has practiced in the Clear Lake area since 1985. He received his MBA in 2000 at UHCL with an emphasis on healthcare systems.

CHURCHES & RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONSNASSAU BAY BAPTIST CHURCH TO PRESENT EASTER MUSICAL DRAMA ‘BOW THE KNEE’

Life’s circumstances are sometimes fraught with confusion. Discernment is difficult at best and answers are elusive. Such is the story of “Bow the Knee,” a musical dramatic production presented by Nassau Bay Baptist Church, 7 p.m. April 11, 12, 18, and 19.

The presentation is a gift to the community, free of charge, but reservations are recommended as seating is limited. Tickets can be downloaded at www.nassaubaybaptist.org.

When a Roman centurion suspects Jesus is more than a trouble maker he finds himself caught between two worlds. Each encounter with the miracle-working rabbi chips away at his doubts causing his subordinates–and even-tually Pilate–to question the centurion’s allegiance to the Roman Empire.

Yet standing on the side of faith is a trusted servant to the centurion who urges the long-time soldier to believe the incomprehensible and trust the heart of the Father.

“I am so excited to watch and listen as we present our Easter production of ‘Bow the Knee’ this April,” said Roger Sharp, NBBC minister of worship. “The acoustics, lights, and audio are designed for an optimal, worshipful experience.”

Since the opening of the new NBBC sanctuary Easter 2013 production directors have eagerly anticipated staging “Bow the Knee” in the new setting. Redesigned sets and staging will be the backdrop for the 2014 presentation.

In recent years, Nassau Bay Baptist Church has earned a reputation for presenting inspirational, professional-quality dramatic productions. “Bow the Knee,” last performed in 2012, was popular with the community, play-ing to capacity crowds.

Nassau Bay Baptist Church is located at 18131 Nassau Bay Dr., Houston. For more information go to www.nassaubaybaptist.org or call 281-333-3844.

CONGREGATION SHAAR HASHALOMCARNIVAL WITH JEWISH FLAVOR

Jews have their own Halloween? Who knew?

Purim is the Jewish celebration which some compare to Halloween. Well, the comparison is not quite correct: Indeed, people & children as well as adults - put on costumes, but that’s where the similarity ends.

Purim is the celebration of the deliverance of the Jews from the evil Haman, through the courage of their leader, Queen Esther and her cousin, Mordechai. Th ough a relatively minor Jewish holiday, Purim is one of the most joyous holidays. It is celebrated with sending special pastries called Hamentashen

(Ozney Haman in Hebrew) to friends, putting on costumes (especially those of the story characters) and reading the Megilah - the story of the Book of Esther. During the reading, every time Haman’s name is mentioned, everybody drowns it out with boisterous noise making and booing. Th e festival takes place each year on the 14th day of Adar (the 6th month of the current Jewish calendar).Congregation Shaar Hashalom together with Temple Beth Tikvah in Clear Lake will celebrate Purim with their annual Carnival on Sunday, March 23rd from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Th e festival will take place at Shaar Hashalom.

Congregation Shaar Hashalom, a conservative synagogue and member of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, is located at 16020 El Camino Real (midway between Bay Area Blvd. and El Dorado). Temple Beth Tikvah is the reform synagogue in Clear Lake.

Th e carnival is a fund-raising event. Th e entire community is invited to join in the fun, food, and merriment.

Ticket information can be obtained by calling the synagogue offi ce at 281-488-5861, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday - Friday; or by email at [email protected].

SPURLOCK CONCRETE AND FENCING713-772-3600

Spurlock Fence & Concrete are great, I would recommend them to everyone. Several years ago a neighbor told me “if you ever need a fence, call John Spurlock.” Th is was the year to get a new fence. I called John and he came over that afternoon to discuss my fence. While he was here, I mentioned I needed to fi nd a person for my driveway, at the time I did not know he also did driveways. Mr. Spurlock’s crew did a superb job on both the fence and driveway. I am very pleased with every aspect of the job. Even though Mr. Spurlock had several jobs going, he still took time to drive by and inspect the work. Th e job was completed in a timely manner and I can say he was a honest and pleasant person to do business with.
