WELCOME

The “Art Is Ageless”™ Contest and Exhibit showcases the artistic

talents of older Texans from LeadingAge Texas communities

across the state. The exhibit and awards ceremony, along with

the LeadingAge Texas Annual Meeting and Trade Show, take place

annually in May, which has been designated as Older Americans

Month since 1963.

2014 marks the 24th year of LeadingAge Texas’ “Art Is Ageless”

program which features some of the most impressive works of art

to date. The place winners and finalists were selected from over

200 entries in Visual Arts and 40 entries in Writing and the new

Music category. The judges, comprised of artists, authors, and

other experts in their respective fields, praised the broad array

of talent displayed by this year’s participants and expressed their

admiration for the creativity and obvious dedication demonstrated

by each of the entries.

LeadingAge Texas believes that this contest is one of the most

effective tools we possess to highlight the positive aspects of the

aging process. It provides the public with a unique opportunity

to recognize the value of sustaining passion, inspiration, and

originality throughout one’s life. Whether one is continuing a

lifelong hobby or developing a new pursuit late in life, this contest

and exhibit prove that “Art Is Ageless.”

SECOND PLACE JULIA TREADWAY“Shades Of Purple”

Age upon completion: 85

Community: Buckner Villas - Austin

Julia Treadway was born on March 1, 1927 and went to school in Conroe,

Texas, after which she worked at Texaco until she married in 1947. Julia

was more interested in sports than in arts and crafts. However, after when the

ladies group in her church began creating different articles to sell at a bazaar,

Julia realized her belief that God gave her the gift of creativity. After that she

was hooked!

She was absorbed in all things creative, including needlepoint, crochet,

Christmas ornaments, oil painting, silk flowers, and jewelry among other

things. She doesn’t have a favorite medium, just as long as she can do

something creative. Julia often gives her creations to family and friends, and

loves teaching others how to be creative using their God-given gifts.

FIRST PLACE JADE BOEBINGER“Green Goddess”

Age upon completion: 73

Community: Eagle’s Trace - Houston

The inspiration for “Green Goddess” marries fashion and lifestyle, according

to its designer, Eagle’s Trace resident Jade Boebinger. “I often make jewelry

to accent dresses that I own, and this piece is one of my favorites,” Jade states.

“I thoroughly enjoy the process because of the creativity involved. You begin

with colors, beads, and other accessories, and turn them into a piece that is

pleasing to the eye.”

Jade is a disciple of the fabric weaving technique developed by Helen Baines;

she has been doing this type of jewelry work for 20 years. Born in New York

City, Jade graduated from New Mexico State University. With her husband of

57 years, Robert, she traveled and lived throughout the world in countries such

as Argentina, Canada, Great Britain, and Holland. Jade has resided at Eagle’s

Trace for eight years.

THIRD PLACE ANN COHN“Nude One”

Age upon completion: 67

Community: The Buckingham - Houston

Ann Cohn was born in 1926 in Buffalo, New York. Ann initially studied Bio Science at the University of Buffalo, but changed her studies to design,

transferring to Pratt Institute of Design in 1948. Ann fell in love with George Cohn, a neurosurgeon and family friend. They married in 1949 and had four children, who are collectors of Ann’s artwork. Ann volunteered teaching art classes once a week at Buffalo Jewish Community Center, and she feels she learned more as a teacher than she did as a student explaining, “In art, you meet people you would have never had the opportunity to meet.”

Ann’s favorite style of artwork is painting, and after 60 years, she is now attending watercolor painting classes. After taking a drawing class, Ann created the sculpture, “Nude One.” Ann stated, “You lose yourself completely in the creation.”

SECOND PLACE SANDRA KEITH“Pottery Barn”

Age upon completion: 67

Community: Mesa Springs Retirement Village – Abilene

Sandra Keith was born in Lubbock on September 6, 1943 where her parents owned and ran a cotton gin. She always liked to try new things, and that is

where her love of art came about. Sandra’s motto, “Try new things, you never know where it will lead,” is what she lives by. Along with pottery, she enjoys creating various forms of art, photography, copper tooling, sewing, beading, and writing poetry. As a minister, Sandra discovered her love for pottery while going to pottery classes to form new relationships and get acquainted with people. She enjoyed the opportunity to work with her hands and the uniqueness of pottery.

Sandra’s pottery has sold at craft/art shows, which Sandra explains is very gratifying and fulfilling. “Pottery Bowl” took Sandra about one month to create, and is a piece which she wanted to be creative. This desire lead her to using the potato masher pattern.

Age upon completion: 80

Community: Buckner Retirement Village - Dallas

woodcarving and this amateur status stayed with me.” Later, she carved miniature

waterfowl and goose eggs, which ignited her desire to paint. Her natural yen to

write—essays, stories, poetry, prose, sonnets, etc.—took on an urgency after the

passing of her dear husband in 2000. On her piece “Gran-Pa,” Heidi explains, “This

was truly, pure and total, inspiration.” Heidi admits, “My main hobby however, always

was, and is, snapshot photography. I enjoy being this ‘non-stop’ student of life.”

Judy also enjoys writing plays for The Reader’s Theater at Morningside Ministries at The Meadows, where she now lives with her husband.

Community: Morningside Ministries at The Meadows -

San Antonio

Anita Keyes was born in 1934 in Harlingen, Texas. She graduated from Baylor University in 1956, when she discovered the joy of creating

something beautiful in art media. Knowing nothing at all about art, she was intrigued with the work of her roommate, an art major, and decided to register for an art class herself.

Her six months of instruction under Fredrick Mizen, renowned for his Southwest and Indian portraits, are the only formal training she has undertaken. Mizen had Anita begin with charcoal to learn how to see values, or lights and darks, realistically.

Character studies such as her piece “On The Road Again,” done in a pen-and-ink drawing from a photograph, have always been her favorite. This drawing was done over a period of several weeks in 2003 when Anita was 69. Anita explains, “My greatest thrill is when a person comes to life on paper and canvas.”

THIRD PLACE DAVID T. MCBRIDE“When I Look at You”

Age upon completion: 78

Community: Air Force Villages - San Antonio

David T. McBride was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on September 14, 1934. David served in the United States Air Force as a pilot for 21 years,

then flew in corporate aviation for another 15 years. He has always been a voracious reader, but has never written poetry. Recently, on special occasions, he tried his hand at poetry and found that he enjoys it.

When asked about his inspiration for “When I Look at You,” David explains, “The motivation behind this poem is the reason I fell in love with my wife. I was drawn to her by her physical beauty, but what I fell in love with, was who she was, what radiated from her presence, her love of life, her love of people, her love of God. Everything I fell in love with is today, as it has always been, right there in front of me. She is my life, she means everything to me.”

SECOND PLACE LYDIA BLANCHARD“Lakewood, Wisconsin”

Lydia and her husband, Melvin Eckhoff, returned to Whiting, Indiana, in 2013 for her 60th high school reunion. That visit led to a series of unrhymed narrative poems about growing up in the Midwest, including “Lakewood, Wisconsin.”

Age upon completion: 97

Community: Westminster - Austin

Edna was born on a ranch in Kendall County, the last of seven children.

She has lived at Westminster, very comfortably and happily for over 29

years. Edna attended the Kendall County schools, and especially remembers

an English Literature teacher who insisted on their studying Shakespeare’s

writing. She has won thousands of dollars in cash and merchandise prizes

in national competitions in the advertising field. Many of her winning entries

have been in poetry form. She has entered many of the LeadingAge Texas

“Art Is Ageless” Contests and has placed 11 times. Edna loves working on the

“Art Is Ageless” Contest and believes these contests are very therapeutic in

giving older people a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

THIRD PLACE EVELYN SAINE“Norwegian Wool Sweater”

Age upon completion: 76

Community: Presbyterian Village North - Dallas

Evelyn Saine was born and raised in 1915 in Manchester, Tennessee and lived briefly in Indio, California before returning to Montgomery County, Tennessee.

Evelyn married in 1939, and while raising four children, she taught high school chemistry in Memphis, Houston, and Richardson. In her spare time, she cooked, baked, knitted, sewed, and quilted. Upon retirement, Evelyn returned to Tennessee and shared her many interests with Coffee County residents.

Evelyn purchased the blue-green wool yarn in Bergen, Norway during her trip to Europe in 1990. Using a pattern sent to her by her daughter, Susan, “Norwegian Wool Sweater” emerged. Knitting and the creation of this piece fit neatly into Evelyn’s approach to life: “Something to do. I don’t want to do nothing!”

SECOND PLACE KAREN MCDONALD“Fairy”

Age upon completion: 66

Community: Air Force Villages - San Antonio

Karen McDonald has loved art and drawing from a very young age. Her introduction to needle felting came in 2012 when her aunt gave her a special

needle for felting. Having taken art classes in high school, and then attending an art school in Denver, Colorado has helped define her work today. Raising two children and operating a children’s book store for many years kept her from really honing any talent in the art field. Now, with the joy of living at a retirement village, she has time to enjoy her craft and loves the creativity of it. Karen’s “Fairy” was inspired by her desire to incorporate feathers into the project, her love of the

whimsy of nature, and the aspiration to create the look of movement.

THIRD PLACE SHELDON G. LLOYD“Path to the Sea”

Age upon completion: 79

Community: Westminster - Austin

Sheldon Lloyd was born and raised near Sac City, Iowa and attended Iowa State University receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his career,

he received seven patents, served as VP of Technology for a fortune 500-sized company, started two small engineering corporations, and obtained a private pilot’s license. He married and the couple raised two sons, one now deceased.

Photography has been Sheldon’s major hobby since grade school, when the family bathroom served as a dark room. He and his wife, Ruby, have traveled extensively, and he has enjoyed photographing scenes from around the world. “Path to the Sea” was photographed at the entrance to the WWII Memorial Cemetery in Normandy, France, a place he describes as “poignant and inspiring beyond words or pictures, but an artist must try.” This, he says, was his best effort.

SECOND PLACE BOB BAILEY“At The Wailing Wall”

Age upon completion: 66

Community: Querencia at Barton Creek - Austin

Bob Bailey and his wife, Marcia, have three children, eight grandchildren - two in active military service and another a retired, decorated, injured Iraqi veteran. Bob

is an eleventh generation descendant of a family arriving on the Mayflower, and a fifth generation Texan. An all-conference athlete as well as a graduate and former board member of Abilene Christian University, Bob has retired from a career as a Texas highway bridge contractor, when he built bridges and overpasses from Dallas to Pecos to Amarillo (surely you have crossed one of them).

Wherever Bob is in the world, his camera is not far behind - mostly photographing people. “At The Wailing Wall” was taken of a devoted, Hassidic Jew, deep in ritual prayer at the historic Western Wall in Jerusalem. This particular piece remains Bob’s favorite. Bob’s photography rules are simple: “give thought to where you want to stand and take several exposures. One is always better than the others.”

FIRST PLACE GORDON ALLDREDGE“Artist Self-Portrait”

Age upon completion: 81

Community: Air Force Villages - San Antonio

Gordon D. Alldredge started his interest in photography in 1947, as a high

school junior in West Texas, with a 35mm camera. Photography has

been a continuous prime hobby since then. After being commissioned as

a rated pilot in 1954, he continued with higher grade cameras taking aerial

shots of other airplanes in formations. After retiring in 1978, Gordon started a

new career in computer systems.

When digital cameras became available, he perfected digital techniques

with advanced cameras. He was a student in various art classes while at

the University of Texas, San Antonio and completed advanced photography

studies. His art work follows classical approaches to engineering lines,

lighting, angles, and attention to detail. Gordon wants the viewer of his piece,

“Artist Self Portrait,” to question the intent of the photograph.

SECOND PLACE SHIRLEY JEFFERY“All Weather Cowboy”

Age upon completion: 88

Community: Morningside Ministries at The Meadows - San Antonio

Shirley was born in Seattle, Washington in 1925. At an early age, she was charmed by coloring books, but admits that drawing faces was most fun. In 1954, when Shirley

was a young missionary wife living in South Korea, she and her husband were invited to dinner with Dr. Helen Kim, President of Ewha Womans University. Dr. Kim saw Shirley admiring her parents’ portraits and arranged for Shirley to study with Dr. Kim In Soong, Dean of the Fine Arts College. Of that time in her life, Shirley explains, “that six months with Korea’s finest portrait artist opened my eyes and heart to capturing people on canvas in oil.”

It took Shirley two months to bring her friend Ralph, with his strong-lined face, to life on the canvas to create “All Weather Cowboy.” She explains that “catching a person through their eyes is my greatest challenge and accomplishment.” According to Shirley, Ralph’s deep faith and ready smile have blessed many folks at Morningside Ministries at The Meadows.

It wasn’t until many years later, when he moved to Houston and enrolled in

a watercolor class in an art school, that Robert found his niche again as an

artist. Always looking to hone his craft and to challenge himself, he has now

thought of enrolling in the class again after six or eight “keepers” later, and

some recent recognition.

Juanita explains, “Here, I found two wonderful teachers, Evelyn Martin and Dorothy Huddleston, who guided and inspired me. My favorite subjects to paint were peaches, black raspberries, violets, birds, Christmas items, sets of dishes with varied fruits and varied flowers for family gifts and church bazaars. Painting the beauty of God’s nature was both relaxing and enjoyable.” In 1980, as President of Austin Porcelain Art Club, Juanita oversaw the publication of a book of design from known demonstrators for those who could not create their own.

Juanita reflects, “at 90, a great joy would be to reach for that paintbrush again.”
