• Vietnam - he served two tours in Southeast Asia; while on his first tour in 1967-68, he flew 156 combat missions.

• Died 31 Oct. 2012 – 91 Years Old

• Shot down 8 MiG-15s over Korea

• Seven years as a Prisoner of War in Vietnam

In violation of Vietnamese POW rules, Risner, who was the senior officer within the camp, set up church services complete with hymns. In the middle of a hymn, the Vietnamese came in and grabbed Risner to take him back to solitary confinement. As he was led away, fellow POWs stood and sang a "strictly forbidden song," - the 'Star Spangled Banner.”
