Learning Emotional Intelligence thru Voicemail

I was an average student, average parents and grew up in a small town in New Hampshire. I didn’t really know orunderstand those unwritten rules to survive in the corporate environment, which I landed in seven years aftercollege.

Unfortunately, my people know how were not polished-tarnished is more like it. In other words, my emotionalintelligence skills had not been developed. I never heard of emotional intelligence, but I can tell you I certainly did nothave any!

My direct supervisor was not an inspiring or easy woman to work for. She was more like one of those bully bosses-intimidating, condescending and down right difficult to work for. Picture the poster child of No EmotionalIntelligence…..that was her. It was common for her to humiliate and embarrass you in front of customers, patientsand my fellow collegues.

However, she did give me one good piece of advice that change me personally FOREVER! She mentioned, in frontof my fellow colleagues, that I came across as rough and disinterested and I should listen to the voicemails I leaveothers before sending them.

Well, I did just that and what a learning experience. I wouldn’t have answered the messages I had left; I can onlyimagine what others were thinking. There were times it took me four or five attempts to leave a message I wassatisfied with. It was import to me to communicate effectively, which is the foundation to good emotional intelligenceor people skills.

Like any new skill, it takes time to master but with persistence and a desire to succeed your new skills will becomesecond nature.

Take an extra minute to listen to the messages you are leaving others. Be sure you are leaving the right message toyour team, family, patience, customers or clients. They’ll appreciate it.
