Join us in celebrating this special year our 15th year of Leadership Cortland! For fifteen years, we have been building a community of informed, engaged and active community leaders in Cortland County. We now have an alumni base of over 195 individuals in the public, private and not for profit sectors who are making a difference in Cortland County and in our region.

We are pleased to present to you our graduating class - a group of dedicated, engaged, emerging leaders in our County. Their project, Eyes 4Ward, held on May 10, was a fitting project to celebrate our 15th year.

We want to thank the many key leaders in our community who gave up their time to share information and perspectives with these graduates. We also need to thank those who hosted us as we visited agencies and businesses throughout the county. Finally, thank you to those who sponsored participants in the program, and who believe in our mission of developing community leaders.

We continue to learn how our alumni are contributing to Cortland County. Several years ago, we surveyed our alumni and learned that over 74% have served or are now serving on boards and committees in Cortland County. This level of commitment to the county continues with graduation classes since then too. Many have played integral roles in founding new organizations that are making important contributions to our county every day. Others are active in fundraising, while others have been promoted or taken on new leadership roles within their own organization.

Leadership Cortlands collective energy is a powerful influence in our county and region. We invite you to join in our program, and become part of the momentum! Join our program, sponsor an emerging leader, and call upon our graduates to serve!

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has.

    Margaret Mead

  • What is Leadership Cortland?Sponsored by the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce and Tompkins Cortland

Community College, Leadership Cortland is designed to stimulate public-minded thought and energize a group of people who will add to the vitality of our community. The program is carefully organized and includes seven seminars, a two-day retreat/training workshop, an experiential hands-on Community Action Project and a graduation celebration.

The Leadership Cortland Program is part of a national organization of over 600 Community Leadership Programs who are united in preparing future leaders of the complex challenges facing the communities of our nation.

Participants join Leadership Cortland because they want to become more knowledgeable about our County and want to become more involved on boards, committees, and special projects to improve our quality of life.

The presenters are the leaders in Cortland County the decision-makers. The topics are the building blocks of community development: law and justice, education, healthcare, government, economic development, human services, tourism, environment, and more. Boards and board development is an important program component, as well as learning about oneself and working with others is. Current leaders discuss the problems they face, the complexities of the issues, and their viewpoints and rationales for their decisions.

Thus, emerging leaders hear from those already in leadership positions. They become graduates, ready to accept the challenges of Cortland County lifeready to volunteerready to LEAD.
