Venezia is a celebration of Venice in the Golden Age of Baroque, when art music and popular forms came together and mingled, and words and feelings had not yet been held in check by rules and codes.

Music in the streets of the city at Carnival time, with Monteverdi’s haunting madrigals followed by light, popular, humourous pieces, typical of post-Lent celebrations, written by Francesco Manelli (known as Il Fàsolo – The Bean), who was also a keen observer of the torments of love.

Venezia is a celebration of Le Poème Harmonique’s approach, thanks to the stage work of director Benjamin Lazar, and the magical atmosphere created with candles as the only source of light. The connection between music, movement and light is the keystone of the ensemble’s work in its large-scale stage productions; its adaptation here to the more modest framework of a concert represents the quintessence of that aesthetic.

First presented in 2008 for the opening of the Cal Performances Festival in San Francisco, Venezia has since toured extensively in France and around the world, now coming to India for the first time.

“Bonjour India is an enduring promise of the partnership between France and India”. These are the words of H. E. Alexandre Ziegler, Ambassador of France to India, under whose patronage the third edition of Bonjour India highlights how our respective traditions fuel our passion for innovation and creativity.

Since 1998, when it was first created, Le Poème Harmonique has become a leading French baroque ensemble which recreates and promotes early music, in particular that of the 17th century. Using rare instruments such as the theorbo, the lirone, the tiorbino, the ensemble recaptures the poetry of music from the late renaissance and early baroque eras.

We are happy to bring on stage Venezia, a celebration of this golden age when music dissolved borders across Europe, and when art music and popular forms mingled.

France holds dear its mission of creation, dissemination and transmission of the arts. Bonjour India’s latest edition puts the emphasis on long-term partnerships that allow respectful and mutual enrichment of two traditions. Through this unique recital, that brings to India the best France has to offer, we hope to inspire long-term collaborations and professional training in the field of classical music.

I express my deep gratitude to Le Poème Harmonique and its members, to their sponsors, and to all the Bonjour India sponsors. I would also like to thank our local partners: the Prithvi Theatre and the Alliance Française in Mumbai, the Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall and the Alliance Française in Chennai, and finally, in Jaipur, the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, for making this partnership possible.
