Grand Knight’s Message WGK Jerry Wood My

My Dear

Brothers:

As you know, we

will be electing

officers for the

new Fraternal Year at our next

Council Business Meeting on June

13th

The Election Committee has

put forth its recommendations,

and that l ist is in this newsletter

on page 5. If you would like to

run for an office or nominate

someone else who is will ing to

run, please attend that meeting

to make that nomination.

With the arrival of new officers,

this marks my last monthly note

to you as Grand Knight. It has

been a memorable two years of

my life. Memorable because of

the many things we have

accomplished as well as

memorable for all the special

times we’ve spent together both

at work and at play. We have

established what has to be the

best Lenten Fish Fry in the area

(it’s not bragging if it’s true); we

had our first cash prize bingo

night (stay tuned for more about

that); and we managed the

Parish Fund Raiser just last

weekend. The results of that

endeavor gained a greater profit

for our church than last year’s Fund Raiser.

Please don’t think that I am taking credit for any of

these successes; they wouldn’t have happened

without the incredible working members of our K of

C Council. I could start naming them, but that would

take the rest of my space here. Come to our

Installation Dinner in August (probably) and see who

wins the Knights of the Month/Year and Family of

the Month/Year awards. This will be very difficult

because we have more than “the Same Five Guys”

this year. To reiterate my constant theme of the last

two years: If you haven’t volunteered, you have

missed some incredible experiences and successes.

My Brothers, it has been a privilege and a distinct

honor to be with you. I hope to continue editing this

publication, and I will definitely be attending

meetings and volunteering. Thank you for the past

two years.

It’s good to be a Knight in so many ways! Ask an

active Knight why….

Vivat Jesus!

Fraternally,

Jerry Wood

Saint of the Month

Saint Hilary of Arles (c. 401 – May 5, 449)

Saint Hilary of Arles’ Story

It’s been said that youth is wasted on the

young. In some ways, that was true for today’s saint.

Born in France in the early fifth century, Hilary came from an aristocratic family. In

the course of his education he

encountered his relative, Honoratus, who encouraged the young man to join him in

the monastic life. Hilary did so. He

continued to follow in the footsteps of Honoratus as bishop. Hilary was only 29

when he was chosen bishop of Arles.

The new, youthful bishop undertook the role with confidence. He did manual labor

to earn money for the poor. He sold sacred vessels to ransom captives. He

became a magnificent orator. He traveled

everywhere

on foot, always

wearing

simple clothing.

That was the bright

side. Hilary

encounter-ed difficulty

in his relation-ships with other bishops

over whom he had some jurisdiction. He unilaterally deposed one bishop. He

selected another bishop to replace one who was very ill–but, to complicate

matters, did not die! Pope Saint Leo the

Great kept Hilary a bishop but stripped him of some of his powers.

Hilary died at 49. He was a man of talent

and piety who, in due time, had learned how to be a bishop.

Reflection

Saint Hilary teaches us to respect

authority even if found in a young person. Age is not the issue: prudence and

wisdom are.

Food for the Poor Project

Good week to all our Knights of Columbus and

all Volunteers,

I would like to honor one of our volunteers who

has worked in our program for OVER FOUR

YEARS. He has volunteered EVERY WEEK,

something that is not asked of us. We only ask

for once a month for about two hours. This

person never missed a day of volunteering, not

for being sick or because of vacation. I would

like to say congratulations and thank you to

RICH SCHROEDER! He will take a leave of

absence while he takes care of his wife. We

wish him well and a big THANK YOU FOR HIS

SERVICE.

Edward Dunai and Alex Reyes have requested

to work each week. We will honor their

requests, giving them more days. The new

schedule came out Sunday for June/July, so

please look at it to see the days for which you

are volunteering.

We are adding more days per week as we add

another business to our program: EINSTEIN

BAGELS at 64 St/Greenway.

Keep in your prayers Edward Dunal, who lost

his mother last week. We also want to keep in

our prayers Rich Schroeder’s wife who is ill.

THANK YOU all as we begin our fifth season in

helping the poor. We are also adding more

pickup days for PANERA BREAD and Rainbow

Donuts. It's all because of our volunteers.

While the river of our life may not always be

free of obstacles, it is always filled with the

need to help the people of Phoenix. Thank you,

and have a good volunteering week.

Come Together

Let’s be Church, you and I. Never mind what others are saying or, after two thousand years,

how hopeless it all seems. Let’s stick together—we call it communion, don’t we?—and practice being the people of God united in

one faith, one Lord, one baptism. Anyone who agrees on that can come along!

It doesn’t matter which of the last ten popes is your favorite. It doesn’t matter if you take

communion in the hand or on the tongue. It doesn’t matter if you prefer to pray the rosary,

the Jesus Prayer, or the collected poetry of Daniel Berrigan. I won’t make a face if you wear gum clothes to Mass instead of a suit and

tie. Your stance on female deacons isn’t a deal-breaker.

Our unity can’t hang on political affiliation. It’s none of my business what you’ve done or

failed to do. Are we the friends of Jesus or aren’t we? I grant you: Jesus had a pretty

strange assortment of friends. If that’s okay with him, it has to be fine with us.

Does it make Jesus sad, I wonder, to see how divided we are? On the night before he dies our unity is on his mind: that we might stick

together, come what may. Jesus is right to worry about this. Today’s assembly is a

minefield that wary homilists must tiptoe through. Would St. Paul dare to suggest today that, in Christ, there is no conservative or

liberal? What is Church, if we don’t believe this?

As you can see, the Parish Fund Raiser was well

attended, and everyone who attended had a good

time. The Orange Tree Resort was a wonderful

venue: the food, drink, and accommodations were

all outstanding. The evening was a great success,

as the Parish earned $10,000.00 more this year

than last year. Congratulations to all the Knights

who worked on this project! Especially to SK

Michael Smalley, who chaired the project

committee and did a wonderful job as Emcee for

the evening. I suspect that the Parish might call on

us again to handle this event.

Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This is a fairly late feast, going back only to the 13th

or 14th century. It was established widely throughout

the Church to pray for unity. The present date of celebration was set in 1969, in order to follow the

Annunciation of the Lord and precede the Nativity of

Saint John the Baptist.

Like most feasts of Mary, it is closely connected with Jesus and his saving work. The

more visible actors in the visitation drama (see Luke 1:39-45) are Mary and Elizabeth.

However, Jesus and John the Baptist steal the scene in a hidden way. Jesus makes John leap with joy—the joy of messianic salvation. Elizabeth, in turn, is filled with the Holy

Spirit and addresses words of praise to Mary—words that echo down through the ages.

It is helpful to recall that we do not have a journalist’s account of this meeting. Rather

Luke, speaking for the Church, gives a prayerful poet’s rendition of the scene.

Elizabeth’s praise of Mary as “the mother of my Lord” can be viewed as the earliest Church’s devotion to Mary. As with all authentic devotion to Mary, Elizabeth’s (the

Church’s) words first praise God for what God has done to Mary. Only secondly does

she praise Mary for trusting God’s words.

Then comes the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). Here, Mary herself—like the Church—

traces all her greatness to God.

Reflection

One of the invocations in Mary’s litany is “Ark of the Covenant.” Like the Ark of the

Covenant of old, Mary brings God’s presence into the lives of other people. As David danced before the Ark, John the Baptist leaps for joy. As the Ark helped to unite the 12

tribes of Israel by being placed in David’s capital, so Mary has the power to unite all

Christians in her son. At times, devotion to Mary may have occasioned some divisiveness, but we can hope that authentic devotion will lead all to Christ and

therefore, to one another.
