Emotions ran high at Tuesday’s Norwalk City Council Meeting between Whittier city officials, avid bus riders, and members of the Norwalk Transit System over a proposal to cut, make changes to or possibly eliminate some bus routes altogether between the two neighboring municipalities.

West Nile dead bird cases jump to 18 in CerritosBy Randy Economy

The number of West Nile virus (WNV) positive bird deaths in Cerri-tos has risen to 18 over the past week, according the latest data released by the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District on Thursday afternoon.

The Los Cerritos Community News has also learned that two mosquitoes captured in Cerritos recently have also tested positive of the deadly virus.

Cerritos now accounts for almost 60% of the cases countywide.

“Mosquitoes breed more rapidly in warm weather,” says Public Informa-tion Officer Crystal Brown. “With a higher abundance of mosquitoes comes a higher risk of West Nile virus trans-mission.”

Brown continued that residents throughout Cerritos should take note of the significant increase in West Nile virus activity this week and make sure to follow the simple steps to prevent mosquito bites.

She said that residents can follow the 3 D’s of West Nile virus prevention to protect themselves and their families:

Dump/Drain Eliminate standing water on your property because that’s where mosquitoes breed;

Avoid outdoor activities when mos-quitoes are most active; wear EPA-reg-istered insect repellent and long-sleeve shirts and pants when outdoors.

Residents are reminded if they see a

dead bird on your property to immedi-ately call the Vector Control offices in Santa Fe Springs at (877) WNV-BIRD. Do not contact Cerritos City Hall or the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Depart-ment.

After an individual reports a dead bird, they will be contacted to deter-mine the condition of the bird and if it is suitable to be picked up for West Nile virus testing. All dead bird reports are used for surveillance purposes and are extremely valuable for officials if the bird is not submitted for testing.

Also, if you have not been contacted within 24 hours of your report, officials said you may safely dispose of the dead bird in your trash. There is no evidence that West Nile virus can be acquired by handling dead birds, but it is best not to handle the dead bird with your bare

hands. Use gloves, a shovel, or a plastic bag to place the bird in a trash bag for disposal. Please DO NOT freeze dead birds.

West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and officials say the best way to protect you is to avoid getting bitten by the insect.

Vector Control officials also remind-ed residents to make sure that all fitted screens are free from tears on windows and doors around your home.

Members of the Center for Disease Control claim that there is no cure for West Nile virus and one in five persons infected with West Nile virus will exhib-it symptoms.

Since 2008, there have been 24 deaths associated with the West Nile Virus here in Los Angeles County no deaths have been reported here in the greater Cerritos-Norwalk area.

Symptoms of WNV usually occur between 5 and 15 days and can include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, or a skin rash. These symptoms can last from several weeks to months. One in 150 people infected with the virus will require hospitalization. Severe symp-toms include high fever, muscle weak-ness, neck stiffness, coma, paralysis, and possibly death.

GLACVCD recommends that individuals exhibiting these symptoms following a mosquito bite consult a physician as soon as possible. Those at highest risk for severe cases of West Nile virus are the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

For more information about West Nile virus and our vector control ser-vices, please contact Public Information Officer Crystal Brown at the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District at (562) 944-9656 x511 or visit www.glacvcd.org.

Artesia man leaps to his death from Cerritos Towne Center structureVictim identified at Franz Harris Husges, age 23.

By Randy Economy

Members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homi-cide bureau are investigating the death of a man after his body was found at around 8:40 a.m. Wednesday morn-ing at the foot of a five story park-ing structure at the Cerritos Towne Center.

Los Angeles County Coroner’s confirmed that the victim was Franz Harris Husges, 23, a resident of Arte-sia.

Members of the Cerritos Sheriff’s

Station received a call of a “lifeless body” located on the ground at 17777 Center Court Drive in the Cerritos Towne Center early Wednesday, as employees were arriving for work in the popular commercial area.

Husges body was found across a sidewalk between a five story parking structure and an office building.

Apparently several witnesses said they saw the victim jump from the building.

An investigation has been launched by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Division. If you have any additional information about this case, please call (323) 890-5500.

Whitney High School Grad Awarded Gold Medal in Chemistry Olympiad

Four students from high schools in California, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, have won gold, silver and bronze medals from the 43rd annual International Chemistry Olympiad, the American Chemical Society announced today. The international competition was held July 9-18 in Ankara, Turkey. 2011 marks the International Year of Chemistry. ACS, the world’s largest sci-entific society, sponsors the U.S. team with support from other partners.

In addition to the medals, team member Joe Tung, a graduate of Whit-ney High School was selected to deliver a speech to his peers during the opening ceremony.

The four American students were selected from an original pool of more than 12,000 high school chemistry students who vied to be on the team. The final four emerged after a two-week training camp held for the 20 student finalists in mid-June at the U.S. Air Force Academy. ACS, the world’s larg-est scientific society, sponsors the U.S. team along with additional support from other partners.

Tung, 18, won a gold medal and placed 24th overall in the competition.

About the experience, he said, “I feel that even more significant than all the top medals we won this year were the people we met and the cross cultural experiences that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. We tried unique Turk-ish cuisines, visited memorable tourist attractions, and learned from each other. Our successes reflect the hard work and dedication of our team mentors, USAFA professors, and the ACS.”

Tung plans to study molecular biol-ogy and biophysics at Yale University and wants to become a doctor. He also enjoys playing the piano and tennis.

TSchool, and plans to study chem-istry and mathematics at Princeton Uni-versity and eventually become a doctor.Elmer Tan, Edison a student at John P. Stevens High School in New Jersey won a silver medal and placed 48th in the total ranking. Tan, who turned 17 on the July 4, will be a senior at John P. Stevens High School next year where he enjoys playing in the band. “ACS is especially proud of the 2011 U.S. Chemistry Olympiad team. They successfully competed in graduate-level science with the best and the brightest of their peers from around the world,” said ACS President Nancy B. Jackson, Ph.D. “In this International Year of Chemistry, the Olympiad is even more meaning-ful as we celebrate the importance of chemistry in solving global problems.” Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

A Missing LinkBy Jerry Bernstein

“National Night Out “is designed to promote neighborhood spirit and a police-community partnership to fight crime. It is observed throughout the United States.

Many cities offer special programs, bringing together residents, city of-ficials, law enforcement officials and members of the local Fire Department together to mingle with the citizens of the community and explain they are partners in creating a community residents can be proud of and a place where they want to live, where children can play safely without fear of being run over by speeding cars, hurt by gang members

who don’t discriminate whom they harm and could care less about the com-munity they live in.

Tuesday evening the City of Hawai-ian Gardens held its third annual “Night Out.” Residents, led by Councilmember Victor Farfan gathered at city hall on Pioneer Boulevard, walked down Civic Center Drive turning north on Seiine Avenue to the city’s Library and Public Safety Center on Carson Street where Mayor Mike Gomez welcomed them.

With the Mayor were representatives from the sheriff and fire departments, and city officials with representatives from Neighborhood Watch, Fedde Middle School, and members of the Lakewood Explorers Post 804 taking fingerprints. Barbecued hotdogs and cold drinks also awaited the march-

ers. Not present was Councilmember Barry Bruce and Councilman Reynaldo Rodriguez. Bruce has never participated in this program during the three years the city has participated in this national observance to fight crime. Councilman Rodriguez was present in 2010.

Hawaiian Gardens has a long history of being home to the Vario Gang. A few years ago federal law enforcement of-ficers swept them out of the city. Slowly the city recovered from the gang abuse that controlled their city. Now children can play free of fear. Parents are taking pride in their city. New residents are moving into Hawaiian Gardens. One would believe that members of the city council would want to participate in such programs, where the residents are beginning to trust the law enforcement officials who keep them safe from harm.

One can’t help wonder why Coun-cilmember Bruce fails to appear at programs involving law enforcement. Through his efforts the city no longer participates in Nightwatch where a heli-copter flew over the city making sure a crime was not being committed. Now it is only available in emergencies.

National Night Out is an important observance in the fight against crime. It should be important to every Hawaiian Gardens member of the city council for it symbolizes the unity its citizens are forging to make their city a place where they want to live and raise their families. City Council members should also be working just as hard to put Hawaiian Gardens past to rest.

L E T T E R F R O M T H E E D I TO R Hawaiian Gardens and ABC Unified School District Promote Fedde Sports Complex Brick Commemoration CampaignOffers Residents and Businesses Opportunity to be part of Hawaiian Gardens History.

HAWAIIAN GARDENS, CA –August 2, 2011— The City of Hawai-ian Gardens and ABC Unified School District remind City and area residents and businesses there is still time to be a part of history as construction continues on the striking Fedde Sports Complex in Hawaiian Gardens. The “Building Community, Brick by Brick” Fundrais-ing Campaign offers the community the opportunity to purchase and personalize bricks and benches that will be installed at the new Sports Complex. Funds raised by this campaign will be used towards sports programs, improvements and maintenance at the Fedde Sports Com-plex. The deadline to make purchases is September 16.

“While this complex continues the strong partnership between the City and ABC Unified School District, it is the residents who will benefit from this effort,” said Hawaiian Gardens Human Services Director Steve Gomez. “And this campaign offers our residents and businesses the opportunity to leave a lasting impression for generations to come as they enjoy the benefits of this community jewel.”

As part of the program, participants have the option of purchasing 4" x 8" bricks for $75.00 or a bench for $1,500. The purchases include personalized messages commemorating the Fedde Sports Complex, the donor, the donor's family or the entity for whom the dona-tion is made.

The permanent bricks will be in-stalled at the new Fedde Sports Complex entrance plaza or on the benches along the complex boulevards at the comple-tion of Phase 2 of construction, currently projected for later this year. The Sports Complex is being built by the City and ABC Unified School District in conjunc-tion with the Irving Moskowitz Founda-tion.

For more information, participants are encouraged to contact Iliana Arechi-ga at 562-420-2641 x252 or via email at [email protected].

Louis Anderson and Paul Rodriguez: a very full night of comedy at CerritosBy Glen Creason

A strange thing happened to the delightful comedy concert at the Perform-ing Arts Center on Friday night that was steaming full speed ahead toward four stars. Louis Anderson’s understated droll stories had won over the mostly mature house and at the intermission there were a couple of thousand happy Cerritos visi-tors, smiling from ear to ear. What could go wrong with the same group, having a drink or two in the twenty minutes between sets and the headliner, local favorite Paul Rodriguez taking the stage. No problem, no problem at all…for the first hour and fifteen minutes as Rodri-guez kept it clean and down the middle at a dizzying pace, bouncing from one topic to another like a man with pure caffeine pumping through his veins. One had to wonder with the rapid pace of jokes and the changes of subject just how long could the comedian keep this up. The answer was for a long, long, long time. The first hour was classic Paul Rodriguez, the vet-eran stand-up with extensive knowledge in keeping a crowd laughing at absurd-ist vignettes ranging from crossing the blurred border back to a Latino America to tales of religions, strange Winter sports, his Mother’s blue chip stamp collecting and his ideas on family/kids/relationships with women. All funny, all delivered briskly, spraying memories all around the hall which seemed to be with him. When the energy started to lag he returned to the story of the bicycle he longed for as a

kid and his Father’s refusal to take him to Western Auto to purchase the object of his dreams. The last time Rodriguez visited the Center he told this tale and gave goose bumps since it signified the sacrifices an immigrant family would make to please a child raised without much but love under the Christmas tree in Compton. But, this time the story had a different ending that turned it from heartwarming to cynical and elicited a sigh of disappointment where there was a dabbing of eyes before.

At some point Paul Rodriguez grew restless at the responses and sometimes the monologue wavered from hilari-ous stand-up to petulant, self-conscious nervous talking. As the clock approached the three hour mark for the audience Ro-driguez seemed to be frustrated that they were more quizzical than jolly and he just kept talking as they shifted in their seats. As the old Henny Youngman joke went “he reminded me of a Chinese comic “On Too Long.” Too bad because Rodriguez is in a very small group of the very best comics in America and deserves the star-dom he has paid big dues for but on this night he just stayed too long at the Fair.

Louis Anderson, on the other hand, was pure butter and totally captivated the crowd with his low-key style and droll stories about his colorful home life in Minnesota, especially his hoarder Mom and “loud Dad.” He turned ordinary experience at the airports and security measures into laugh out loud moments of joy. He does spend a lot of time on his weight and love of food but it all works since he is only making fun of himself in the end. His finishing kick on aging which involved interplay with audience mem-bers was a delightful bit of storytelling and insight into the human condition. In forty-five minutes Louis Anderson gave the Cerritos audience their money’s worth in laughter. The following two hours were gravy, so to speak.

Homicide investigation launched after man dies from gunshot wound in Norwalk

By Randy Economy

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are investigating a shooting at the 11900 block of Pioneer Boulevard last Sunday that resulted in the death of Norwalk resident Rogielo Sanchez, age 31.

Members of the Norwalk Sheriff’s Department responded to an emergency call at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, about “shots being fired” and that one person had been hit. When officers ar-rived, they found Sanchez and rushed him to an area hospital where he later died.

The area north of the Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) at Pioneer Boule-vard was cordoned off and an immedi-ate search was conducted. Sanchez was rushed to an area hospital where he died from his injuries. According to Craig Harvey with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy is being conducted, but Sanchez suffered at least one fatal gunshot wound.

Anyone with information about this

incident is encouraged to contact Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

If you prefer to provide information ANONYMOUSLY, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637).

Dr. Urban on Today’s Dentistry

Why are dentists serious about gum disease?

Gum disease or gingivitis is present in ninety percent of the population. The disease is painless and seems to have no effect on our daily routine. Besides bad breath the consequences of gum disease seem remote. Why then is your dental team so concerned about gingivitis?

Research is showing that the bacteria that live between your gums and teeth can become very toxic to your immune sys-tem the longer they are left alone. In other words they get nastier and more menacing to your body.

How long of a timetable remains uncertain and varies with the individual. However, the research shows that so called good bacteria can change into bad bacteria over time. By disturbing and mixing up the bacterial colonies in your gums with brushing and flossing seems to reset this timetable back to square one. If this reset mode occurs a few times a day we hope that the bad bacteria are selected against and will not pose greater problems down the road. It is your dentist’s hope that this routine becomes a daily habit.

People who brush only once a day or once a week put themselves at greater risk of developing a more serious condition. If left undisturbed the bacteria will become more virulent and become more damaging to the surrounding tissues and immune system. It is much harder to reverse this condition and some people never respond well to our best therapies.

Oral therapies include prescription rinses, more frequent dental cleanings, an-tibiotics, and gels. Gum surgery and bone grafting may be needed to hopefully keep teeth longer. Extractions may be required. This is serious dentistry that could have been prevented with good habits. But what happens to the immune system?

Research has shown that chronic inflammation (i.e. arthritis and infection) increases the load on the body’s immune system. The immune system can become overloaded and not respond well to other conditions that may arise. A weakened immune response can allow opportunistic oral bacteria to have a more devastating effect upon their host (you).

This is where gum disease can take someone who is not vigilant about their oral health. Your dentist is your guardian against this outcome.

Weekly crime summaryJuly 25-31, 2011

Part I felony investigations in-creased last week from eighteen to twenty-seven. Robberies, commercial burglaries and vehicle thefts were up, vehicle burglaries remained the same, and residential burglaries were lower. Patrol personnel handled 287 calls for service, down from 298 the previous week. The current 2011 weekly aver-age in calls for service is 273.

There was one robbery reported. On Thursday July 28 at approximately 9:45 p.m. a male juvenile was riding a bike on 176th Street near Cortner Ave-nue when another male juvenile ran up behind the victim, pushed him down, and fled with the bicycle.

Residential burglaries dropped to three after four the past two weeks. A rear window and a sliding glass door were pried, and front window was left open. Laptop computers, TVs, com-puter towers, and business suits were taken. The 2011 weekly average in residential burglaries remains at 3.6.

We cannot stress the need to ensure your residence is COMPLETELY se-cured prior to departing. An unfortu-nate part of summer is the amount of windows and sliding glass doors left open to ventilate a residence. This gives the thief easy access to your home.

Five commercial burglaries and two “other structure” burglaries were investigated. There was one case the previous week. A storage unit and a

fitness center locker were targeted where baseball bags and keys were sto-len. Five closed businesses were also involved with shattered windows and pried doors as entry points. Computer towers, laptop computers, and copper wire were stolen in those cases. The 2011 weekly average in commercial /“other structure” burglaries is 3.3.

Vehicle burglaries remained the same at ten last week. All ten were from high-volume commercial parking lots, and seven SUVs were targeted. GPS units were removed in two crimes and a high-end stereo in one. Keys, sunglasses, purses, laptop computers, ID, a hardhat and an MP3 player were stolen. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries remained at 5.2.

We continue to see GPS unit thefts. These items are usually held by suc-tion to windshields, which offer an easy target. Thieves can drive by and select the cars they want without hav-ing to go on foot and look inside to see what is on the seat or floorboard. Why make it easy for them? Make sure you secure your GPS unit along with any other property you don’t mind losing before leaving the vehicle.

Vehicle thefts rose from one to four last week. All four were from high-volume commercial parking lots. Two were Hondas, one an SUV, and the fourth a Nissan. The 2011 weekly av-erage in this crime is now 2.9.

Even though we see more Hondas, Toyotas and high-end SUVs stolen compared to others, car thieves are not always as selective as you think and are most often just looking for trans-portation. Consider a steering wheel locking device that serves as a good visual deterrent.

La Mirada weekly crime summaryJuly 25 - July 31, 2011

Gilroy Garlic Festival celebrates its 33rd year charitable donations total $8.8 millionBy Jerry Bernstein

I was sitting at my desk thinking about my upcoming annual visit to the Garlic Festival in Gilroy when my telephone rang. Answering it, the voice on the other end asked if I realized the Festival was 33 years old and was giv-ing sample Garlic Ice Cream Cones to festival visitors? Before I could reply the telephone went dead. This called

for an investigation. I just might have a scoop here.

The next morning I climbed into my “Merri Oldsmobile”, picked up my cousin in Reseda and was off to Gilroy. We arrived in the Garlic Capital around 2:30 p.m. and immediately headed for OD’s Kitchen on Martin Street for lunch. The restaurant is famous for its Garlic oriented meals and I might add its reasonable prices. We both ordered Hamburgers sprinkled with Garlic French fries.

The help at the festival is made up of volunteers. The money they would nor-mally earn is given to charities of their choice. To date the festival has donated $8.8 million.

After checking in at the hotel, reservations made last September, we

prepared for the festival’s opening the next morn-ing. There are several routes to reach the festival grounds. Having gone to the festival for the past 20 years and with the help of my cousins GPS we have learned many of the local routes to the

site. If the visit is a first and you’re not familiar with the area, the best way is to follow the signs, including a stint on the I-5 freeway. Once there you will receive directions where to park your car. A shuttle will then take you to the festi-val’s entrance.

Upon entering the grounds we normally head for a booth where we purchase our Garlic Braids. A median braid cost $15 and will provide you with Garlic bulbs for the next nine-to-12 months. The vender will hold the braid for you so you don’t have to carry it during your visit.

One lesson learned over the years, if you plan to go to the festival in the morning, you don’t want to eat break-fast, except maybe for a cup of coffee. It’s important to remember that you will be given free samples of many of the gourmet dishes available. In fact if you are not careful you’ll spoil you dinner plans for later in the day.

Gourmet Alley is the heart of the Garlic Festival. Pyro Chefs entertain the crowds with spectacular flame ups as they prepare mouth-watering garlic dishes that include stuff mushrooms, Calamarti, Scampi, Pepper Steak and Italian Sausage Sandwiches, Garlic Bread, Garlic Fries, and Garlic Chicken Stir-Fry.

Holding up their braided cornhusks are Bernard Falkin, a Reseda resident, and friend while the boy’s mom finishes her braid.

had my coffee and a bagel with cream cheese. Later at the festival I indulged in a corn-on-the cob smothered in melted Garlic butter. About 2 p.m. I had a non-garlic barbecued turkey leg smothered in barbecue sauce. The tur-key leg is one of the few food items at the festival that is garlic free. Later that afternoon we tracked down the Garlic ice-crème. The sample was indeed free.

That night we changed our venue and drove to San Jose, which is approx-imately 20 miles north of Gilroy. We ate dinner at the Spaghetti Factory. If you wish you can drive south to Salinas and have dinner at an English Pub. There are also many fine restaurants in Gilroy and Morgan Hill to enjoy.

This year I did okay. The hotel we stayed at has a continental breakfast. I

PREMIER GIRLS FASTPITCH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Artesia Punishers 16-Under team splits first two playoff games of national tournamentBy Loren Kopff

IRVINE-The Artesia Punishers 16-Under travel softball team was coast-ing through the early parts of the second annual Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championship. But the team fell for the first time this past Wednesday night and was sent to the loser’s bracket, needing to win eight straight games to win the tournament.

A four-game winning streak was snapped by the Tropic Wave, 2-1, at Bill Barber Park as the team from Venice, FL pushed across the winning run in the top of the sixth. Earlier in the day, the Pun-ishers blasted the (Clearwater) Florida Sharks 7-1 behind a 14-hit attack.

“I think that’s the outlook from the beginning,” said Punishers head coach Roger Chavez. “We wanted to get into games that have an impact where every play is significant, every pitch is sig-nificant. After the pool play games and coming into the bracket play, you have a good idea of the players who are men-tally prepared and ready for the bigger games. We’re always looking forward to that bracket type of play because we like to move on.”

With one out in the bottom of the first against the Sharks, right fielder Amy Zeronian (Marshall High School) doubled to the left field gap and scored

on a triple from third baseman Sydney Colenzo (Downey Calvary Chapel High School). Three pitches later, the Punish-ers went up 2-0 on catcher Brook Hud-dleson’s (Mission Hills High School) base hit to right field.

In the next inning, another one-out rally produced three more runs as cen-ter fielder Amanda Sandoval (North Torrance High School) doubled, second baseman Sara Foster (Millikan High School) singled, and left fielder Madeline Kaplan (Harvard-Westlake High School) and Zeronian both doubled.

The final two runs were scored in the sixth as Zeronian and pinch hitter Chel-sea Cuevas (Lakewood High School) had run scoring hits. The Punishers had at least one hit in all six innings. Colenzo and Zeronian each went three for four while Foster, batting in the ninth spot, went two for two and scored twice. Pitch-ers Reina Trejo (Torrance High School) and Madi Perez (Fountain Valley High School) combined on a two-hitter and struck out six.

“We had talked prior to the game about the middle of the lineup doing the brunt of the work,” Chavez said. “I was really hoping that we could get more pro-duction out of the very top.”

The Punishers began pool play action this past Monday morning with a 4-1 victory against the (Tomball) Texas Pep-pers. A single from Foster and a double from Colenzo was followed one out later by a three-run home run from designat-ed hitter Makayla Dole (Western High School). Colenzo’s fourth inning base hit brought home Perez.

The next day, the Punishers edged the (New Orleans) Voodoo 3-2 as Colenzo went three for three and drove in a pair of runs and Zeronian added two more hits. Those two had two-out run scoring hits

in the bottom of the third to put the Pun-ishers in front 2-0. Later in the day, the Punishers crushed the So Cal Hurricanes 9-0 behind another combined two-hitter from Perez and Trejo. The game was put away in the top of the second when the Punishers batted around and scored five runs. Huddleson, Taylor Jerrick (Ken-nedy High School) and first baseman Sa-brina Walker (Downey High School) had run scoring singles in succession.

Late this past Wednesday night against the Tropic Wave, Foster again went two for two and drove in a run while Co-lenzo, Huddleson, Walker and Zeronian also collected base hits. Entering action on Aug. 4, Colenzo was hitting a blister-ing .688 with five runs batted in and had scored four runs.

“She is a very special player and I think there is an understanding why she’s going [to play in] college and go-ing to be attending Cal State Fullerton,” Chavez said. “She has a great patience in the box, knows her pitch and she’s not looking for the home run. She has a lot of base hits and doubles and she keeps a pretty simple approach.

Zeronian was hitting 466 and had touched home plate six times while Hud-dleson had a .357 average.

During the winning streak to begin the tournament, the Punishers pitching staff of Jerrick, Perez and Trejo had al-lowed 12 hits and struck out 13 batters.

“Reina has been the workhorse from the beginning,” Chavez said. “When we picked up Taylor, Taylor also helped with that work load but we always go back to Reina whenever the big games are in. She has great ball movement, great con-trol and a lot of confidence. I think the team feeds off of that.

Nostalgic atmosphere headlines Premier Girls Fastpitch opening ceremoniesBy Loren Kopff

HUNTINGTON BEACH-Nothing says Southern California like sun, sand, surf and an Oldies tribute band. That’s what was on hand this past Monday afternoon for the Artesia Pun-ishers 16-Under travel softball team and 174 other squads at the opening ceremonies of the Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championship.

Unlike most opening cere-monies to the end of the summer major national softball tourna-ments where teams mostly enter a stadium or playing facility and make their way around the out-field, teams lined up on Main St. in Huntington Beach north of Ol-ive Ave. By 2:00 p.m., the street was in the initial stages of being blocked off to vehicular traffic with teams such as the Corona Angels,(Jupiter, FL) Lady Gators and (Hillsboro, OR) Northwest Bullets taking in the early hustle and bustle.

The ceremony began two hours later as the teams walked down Main St. to-wards the Huntington Beach Pier. Upon crossing the heavily populated Pacific Coast Highway, the teams made their way to the beach on the south side of the pier and assembled to a concert stag-ing area where they were treated to the

sounds of Woodie and the Longboards, an Oldies/Beach Boys/70s tribute band. Just being on the beach with a cool ocean breeze was more than enough solace for teams coming from Texas and other parts of the country where triple digit tempera-tures have been a daily routine this sum-mer.

“It’s so nice; I love it here,” said third baseman Sydney Colenzo. “I’m going to college here. I love it here in Califor-nia.”

Colenzo is the lone Punisher to stay in Southern California two years in a row

for a national tournament. Last summer, she was part of the Artesia Punishers 18-Under team that participated in the Amateur Softball Association ‘A’ Na-tional Championships in Hemet. Colenzo added that the two opening ceremonies from different organizations were pretty much the same and both were “very high quality”.

“I think for the families, it’s always more comfortable to sleep in your own bed,” said Punishers head coach Roger Chavez. “The travel is fun; the experi-ence is nice when you go somewhere new. When the girls have an opportunity to stay in their own bed and stay in those comfortable, familiar surroundings, they come out more relaxed.”

Last summer, Chavez took his Arte-sia Punishers 14-Under team to the ASA ‘A’ Western Nationals in Ft. Collins, CO where the team had to endure inclement weather most of the time.

The only negative feedback from coaches, players and parents had to do with the lack of space once the girls reached the stag-ing area. In addition to the open-ing ceremonies, the U.S. Open of Surfing Championships were being held in Surf City, USA all week long, making an already beach scene that much popu-lated. This is the second year of existence for the Premier Girls Fastpitch, an up and coming or-ganization that is bound to give heavy competition to the more popular ASA.

“I think the concert venue could have occupied more teams and I think that’s something that [the PGF will] have to con-sider as the tournament grows,” Chavez said. “I think we’re go-

ing to see this tournament grow. The cli-mate conditions are second to none.”

“I liked that it was on the beach,” Co-lenzo said. “I love the beach. I liked how you got to walk down [to the beach]. Everybody wants to come to Huntington Beach, especially during the U. S. Open. It was just awesome being able to walk down Main St.”

The Artesia Punishers 16-Under travel softball team shortly before the beginning of the Premier Girls Fastpitch Opening Ceremonies.

“Naked Woman by Lake,” “Status in Luxembourg Gardens,” and “Bleak Walk.”

Jung’s work includes oil painting; fresco; watercolors and pastels; wood-cuts and lithographs; and ceramic and monumental mosaic works.

Jung was chosen by his country as a Taiwan Arts All-Star for his blending of traditional Chinese subjects with classi-cal, Western techniques. Jung has been compared to Picasso for his ability to apply various media and materials to his works of art.

“Painting has become my second life,” said Jung. “I believe art has always been an undertaking that asks

Hardware and Sheet Metal Works on Artesia Boulevard in Artesia as a cashier for the past 20 years.

She had a passion for sewing and quilting and designed and sewed many quilts that were given away to family and friends. If she heard of a family that was expecting a child, she would begin a patchwork quilt to give to the family for the new baby. She also made many quilts that were donated to charity and for homeless children.

Murphy took quilting classes at ABC School District Adult Learning Center, and would often give her instructor’s pointers, tips and suggestions that she had learned over 40 years.

not what you can reap but what you can sow.”

Born in 1934 into a schoolteacher’s family in central Taiwan, Chen as a small boy showed no interest in art. To avoid air raids during the Second World War, the Chen family moved to the country where he would be impressed with the orange-red sunset above the expanse of farmland.

When Jung first broached the idea of making art his career, his parents were anything but encouraging. In the practi-cal minded Taiwanese society of that era, the life of a painter was considered economically unstable and profession-ally dubious.

He changed his parents’ minds by emphasizing that an art teacher’s salary was just the same as for teaching math, science or any other subject.

Jung enjoys traveling widely in Europe, and Italy is his favorite country. He is amazed at the historic cathedrals and the masterpieces left by the genius-es of the Renaissance.

His reputation as an artist grew as his works were regularly accepted for exhibitions at the greatest art galleries in Europe, and he has won numerous awards. Jung’s art is on display until Aug. 10 at the Chen Ching Jung Muse-um, 3353 Katella Avenue, Los Alamitos, CA 90720 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

and would also halt service altogether on Saturdays. Route 7 would be elimi-nated all together, and Route 8 would be cut off between the Gateway Plaza Mall to the Whittier Bus Depot and the seg-ment between the Metro Link Station and Carmentia Road via Leffingwell Road and Imperial Highway.

The proposed changes would take ef-fect beginning September 19th.

Michael Browne, Transit Manager for the City of Whittier, told the Norwalk City Council that the cuts would mean a loss of at least 500,000 rides on the bus system for Whittier residents alone. He also expressed his displeasure over what he called a “lack of open dialogue” between both cities. Browne also urged that the Norwalk and Whittier both con-tinue discussions on the proposed cuts on a “city manager to city manager” level. “We found out about these proposed cuts to our service in Whittier in a letter back in June,” he said. “How can we give our input into these changes without a face to face conversation?” Browne asked.

Browne also asked that a letter from Whittier City Manager Stephen Helvey delivered to Norwalk City Clerk Theresa earlier in the day be reviewed by the entire Norwalk City Council.

In the letter, Helvey stated that “these proposed cuts to service in the Whittier area would seriously and detrimentally affect the City of Whittier’s transit-depen-dent residents.”

“While these changes may not directly affect residents of Norwalk they will certainly adversely affect Whittier resi-dents,” Helvey commented in his letter to Norwalk officials. Helvey also expressed his objection to each of the proposed route changes and eliminations in the four page letter. (A copy of Helvey’s letter can be found in its entirety on the Los Cerritos Community News website at www.loscer-ritosnews.net).

“We probably wouldn’t have turned the operation over to the City of Norwalk two years ago, if we (the City of Whittier) would have realized that the services were going to be cut or eliminated alto-gether in such a short amount of time,” Browne told the Norwalk City Council dur-ing his report.

Norwalk Mayor Mike Mendez said that he ran into members of the Whittier City Council meeting at a recent area meeting for the Sanitation District, and he said that “both of us expresses an interest in wanting to keep talking” about the situation.

Around 10 residents from both Norwalk and Whittier and surrounding communities testified over the issue, in-cluding David Anaya, a handicapped rider who said that he depends on the bus as his “life line” to the community. Anaya, who is confined to a wheelchair, said he wanted to have changes made to Route 2 including “increases” in the amount of ride times to “make it easier” to get from shopping areas around the Costco and Metro lines. “We depend on these buses, we cannot eliminate service,” he said.

Another Norwalk resident Mario Vargas, said he too was opposed to the elimination of Route 8, since he relies on the line to get back and forth to the doctors. Vargas, who is also handicapped, said he supported making the route longer especially along Carmentia Road and Rosecrans Avenue.

Rosa Rivera, parent of a special needs child said that she depends on Route 2 to take her child back and forth to doctors

and medical care professionals. “It scares me to think of how I am going to be able

to get back and forth to the doc-tors” if cuts were made.

Lorraine Padilla, a parent of three children in Norwalk, said that her fam-ily moved to Norwalk because of the “positive benefits” offered by the Norwalk Transit System. “Students at Norwalk High School, and

Cerritos College and even at Cal State LA depend on these routes each and every day.” Padilla even said that she probably wouldn’t have moved to Norwalk if she would have known about these changes a “few years back.”

“Lots of kids need these buses, and Norwalk Transit was more economical, and more convenient, and that’s one of the main reasons we moved here,” Padilla said.

Christian Sanchez-Bartz, a student at Rio Hondo College had concerns about ridership on Route One to the RHC cam-pus. Sanchez-Bartz also wanted to know if any plans would be considered to keep Route 7 “in tact.”

Vice Mayor Kelley said that it was the job of the city council to “make the Nor-walk Transit System pay for itself.”

“We have lost $2,500,000 in the last two years,” Kelley said. “For me this issue is about not losing money year in and year out.” Kelley also said that when all is said and done, Norwalk taxpayers will have “lost more than $4.5 million dollars.” “It is time to stop the bleeding.”

Mayor Mendez said that “we have to get to the point that this thing pays for

itself. Maybe we can look at the ridership in Norwalk and Whittier to see what we can do to keep these services intact, but we have to make tough decisions in these dire economic times.” Mendez, a leading advocate for regional transit issues includ-ing the massive expansion of Interstate 5 in the Norwalk area, said “when we look at transit needs we need to look at our city colleagues to see if any additional support can be had.”

Councilman Luigi Vernola was more direct with his concerns about how the issue was handled between the two cit-ies. “I am sorry this has come to this, especially getting most of these details after the fact.” “We need to be on top of the ball not underneath it, especially on issues that pertain to public transporta-tion,” Vernola said. He was also critical of the oversight of the “entire process” and wanted to know why communications between the Norwalk and Whittier “were so ineffective.”

Councilman Marcel Rodarte said that “we can look at the potential safety considerations on Route 2, but we cannot sacrifice public safety when it comes to our transit system.”

“We are dealing with thousands of people who ride our buses month in and month out,” Rodarte said.

“When we were making the budget for 2011-12, we knew these issues between Norwalk and Whittier were going on. We need to stop the bleeding and explore what is the best of the community,” Ro-darte said. He also expressed interest in exploring possible “out sourcing services” in the future when it comes to transporta-tion issues. “We need to think differently down the road,” Rodarte said.

Councilman Leonard Shryock was more blunt: “Shame on us for not stopping the bleeding.”

“I am not concerned about helping the city of Whittier and their money prob-lems,” he said.

The plan was approved on a 5-0 vote.
