Bystander Effect
“The bystander effect, or bystander apathy, is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases in which individuals do not offer any means of help to a victim when other people are present.”

Law & Order SVU
Law and Order is an amazing show that shows the crimes of the special victims unit. Detectives work together to solve crimes and serve justice.
Law & Order SVU
Connection At the beginning of the video, a live
rape is being broadcasted on every computer campus wide.
Law & Order SVU
Connection The rape was broadcasted to
thousands of students and not one of them called the police for help. Some seamed worried and some thought it was a joke. This is a great example of the Bystander Effect proving people will not intervene because they believe someone else will.
Law & Order SVU
Connection When the young victim of the rape
comes forward to the police, they are appalled by the actions of the students. When on the scene, Detective Elliot Stabler says
“It's called the bystander effect. No one does anything because they think someone else will.”
Real life exampleThis episode was made with influences of the Kitty Genovese murder. Kitty was murdered outside her apartment while 38 people heard and watched the whole thing without helping.
My ThoughtsI AM GLAD THAT A POPULAR TV SHOW SUCH AS SVU IS RAISING AWARENESS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF SPEAKING UP AND HELPING OTHERS.
