In a world of ever evolving technology, it is essential to remember to put pen to paper. There is something about a pencil drawing that shows human hands have touched it and invested in its creation. While I certainly use every tool available, be it computer modeling or a set of watercolors, I firmly believe that sketching is a dying form that needs to be preserved as a a piece of human thought and emotion in drawn form.

The Boys and Girls Club was designed to create a comfortable and encouraging atmo-sphere for local children rather than the typical institutional environment. A gymnasium open to the lobby and game room above create a space where children can explore and play on their own while administrators watch from a distance. The gymnasium has a fully operable wall that opens to engage the landscape outside. The sunken reading room and children’s library create small scale spaces that are more comfortable for children.

The spiral nature of the Zen Discovery Center enforces the ideals of the religion, cre-ating a path to discovery. The path wraps around the bald hill culminating in a medita-tion hall and at last the clearing at the top with a view of the mountains all around. Along the way are guest rooms, library, Zen gardens, baths, and tea house, all of which are designed to integrate the user into the natural landscape.

The Zen Discovery Center’s facilities are built into the side of the hill near Asheville, North Carolina and are wood timber construc-tion. Exterior passage ways encourage the user to experience their natural landscape and explore their surroundings, encouraging an engagement with the ideals of zen and its natural roots.

This semester was a first step into the exploration of construction methods and assembly techniques through the production of wall sections and detailed study models.

The LEAP Design Collaborative was a LEED Platinum project designed to bridge the working relationships between architects and engineers. The office in Knoxville was designed in two segments, one housing architects and the other engineers. These two intimate spaces were bridged by communal spaces, such as conference rooms, a break room and “idea labs” which both literally and figuratively bring architects and engineers together. The building gives back to the community by providing green plaza space and a forum for discussion about design

The competition sought a simple yet transformable space that could bring multiple uses and collaboration to the courtyard of the Art and Architecture Building at the University of Tennessee. The design created a minimal grid system of sliding panels that can be rearranged for large seminars or smaller group discussions as well as exhibitions. The panels can be moved beneath the pedestrian bridge to open up the space while the amphitheater seating provides gathering space and a forum for architectural discussion.

The All Stars Project aims to engage youth through performance. Their definition of per-formance is not necessarily framed by a formal theater and theatrical training but through empowerment. By creating an outdoor performance space, I eliminated the formalities of theater, creating an inviting and encouraging space for performances of all varieties such as hip hop, break dancing, freestyle and poetry readings. By engaging with the existing greenway not only are youth encouraged to delve into cultural experiences, but the com-munity is also encouraged to engage.

The heart of the All Stars Project is contained within a bridge piece stretching from the existing depot to the East River. The daily lives and daily ‘performances’ with business men or with peers are in fact the backbone of the program and not the proscenium the-ater. The media center (the crux between daily life and theatrical performance) is visible above the exterior stage, giving audience members a glimpse into the daily lives of the all stars and allowing the All Stars to become the backdrop of something greater.

Over the course of spring semester my fourth year I had the opportunity to travel through Germany and to Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, While studying at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany I often took weekend trips across Europe and kept record of the things seen and experienced. These are glimpses of the photo-graphs and sketches over the course of six months and countless miles.

While studying in Germany, I had the opportunity to participate in a fabric formed con-crete seminar. We were asked to create a concrete seating module for the courtyard at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. We experimented with concrete and the shape it takes on when poured into a fabric mold. The end result was a series of hollow cubes, light enough to be rolled by one person and rearranged. Each surface was the nega-tive imprint of a fabric formed positive unique to each student.
